1 The Search for UP By Don Stewart May 2017 Staring longingly into the sky, I can see UP. I know UP is there. I ve seen it happen before and occasionally it happens to me. UP is a beautiful thing because if you discover some UP you can get HIGH. Up always gets a rise out of me. It s euphoric. It almost always makes me giddy. Must be the thin air. There are telltale signs of where UP is I m told, none of which is a sure thing. Signs like the Mylar ribbon that s supposed to point at it. The circling birds, the cloud of insects, that plastic bag that was captured by some UP or the fellow fliers that have already found UP. One of the problems with trying to get into someone else s UP is that sometimes they take all the UP with them. That leaves you with trying to find enough other UP so you can get into their UP. But most of the time they blissfully fly away and leave you with DOWN. DOWN is a real bummer. You feel terrible, your spirits are low (and so is your glider) which can lead to unwanted pointing and laughing. Most of all the bad things happen when DOWN finds you. You don t complete the task, your score goes in the toilet and depending on how fast your batch of DOWN is could very well resort in structural damage to your glider but most certainly your Ego. So, to summarize, for the most part, UP is good. Down is bad. Rarely we have seen bad UP. I m thinking of the UP Tom Culmsee found at Brooks Oregon one year. His Xplorer found so much UP that for all we know it s still UP. Then there s bad DOWN and then bad DOWN. I m thinking of a Pike Perfect launch that stripped the elevator clevis right out of the pilots hand resulting in instant DOWN. That bad Down happened in less than ten feet. DOWN comes in many forms. There s DOWN too fast, DOWN too slow. There s DOWN too soon, DOWN too far, UPside DOWN and the most frightening is I never saw it go DOWN. I ve never once had someone come running up to me and say Man did you see the butt load of DOWN that I found? What a rush!! UP always gets good reviews. Even when the UP is too much it still seems to get all the compliments. Maybe it s because UP is so much harder to find than DOWN. That s why we continue to search for the UP. I ve even tried to borrow a cup of UP from fellow fliers but to no avail. Now we all know the quest for UP is never satisfied and so we keep searching. With all of this in mind I d like to wish all the pilots out there, Gods speed. Get it UP, keep it UP, and may the force be UP/or uh with you.

4 Shavings from the Editors Desk for May 2017 By Ye Olde Newsletter Editor Every time I sit down to write something for this column, I wonder what I will come up with. Contest season is about to get underway. So we get to have 5 months of fun and competition and hope that the weather stays OK. No rain, no high wind and plenty of sunshine. Let s hope that the summer months are not like what we have been having so far this year. Some of you may have heard that Amy Pool took a header off her bike, here is an update on her condition courtesy of Tom Clumsee. I chatted with Amy on Thursday and she is doing better. She started her physical (Brain) therapy regimen which will run for about 5 hrs. per day, M F. The therapists are optimistic on her full recovery. Right now, she has some difficulty spelling/writing and has had a few bouts of blurred vision in one eye. She is feeling well enough to accept calls and s (will try to respond as best she can, but it is more difficult) so feel free to do so. Just keep in mind the +2-hour time difference with Texas. Best times to reach her would be on the weekends or weekdays from 3 7pm our time (PST.) Hang tough Amy we are all pulling for you. One other news note. On April 10 th, ye Olde Newsletter Editor had open heart surgery to replace my Aortic valve. Surgery went well and now I am in the recovery mode. Still get short of breath and a little fatigued but every day it s better. My surgeon tells me that I can throw/launch gliders on June 10 th. I am looking forward to that day. Thanks to Don Stewart for his UP article this month, and thanks to all of the CD s for getting their contest flyers in early.
