September 2018 Get Ready, Get Set, Go To Eltopia, WA for the 42 nd Annual NWSS Tournament!!! How to be a Successful Woman in the RC Soaring Hobby By Anne Stimers and Jim Frahm 1. Become a cute disciple with the Cute Disciple Organization (CDO) 2. Put your bio on the CDO website 3. Link it to all the soaring club websites in your area 4. Wait for a sucker to respond and offer to help teach you to fly 5. Learn to bat your eyes at the guys on the flight line (hardest lesson) 6. Learn to giggle and smile at everyone while flying at an event while simultaneously thinking to yourself, "I'm gonna bury you all." 7. Steadily improve your flying skills, but never show your full potential early on in your career. i.e. Always be aware of the fragility of a man's ego. 8. Take tips from the Grande Dame of flying, Sandie Pugh, on how to win without hurting the men's feelings, and the secret thermal indicator tongue placement. 9. Save up money during the off season because staying in a hotel room every weekend by yourself is expensive. 10. Learn the art of dishing out a zinger (while remembering a man's fragile ego). 11. Grow a thick skin. As you interact more and more with the men, they'll treat you as such and have diverse conversations in your presence.

Shavings from the editor s desk. By Jim Well darn, it looks like another flying season is ending, I guess that time really goes fast when you are having fun. The 42 nd annual tournament is just around the corner, once again being held at beautiful Basin Sod Farm in Eltopia, WA. Hope that the weather holds and we have great weather like we did last year. A few things to cover in this issue. Many thanks to Anne Stimers and Jim Frahm for the article How to be a Successful Woman in the RC Soaring Hobby, Rex Grace for the latest season points standings and Kevin Martin for the Thermal Search article. Yours truly recently found out that Our AMA district XI VP is planning a Jamboree for next year. Here is the info for the Jamboree. The 1st Annual AMA NW Jamboree will be June 7-9, 2019, at the Tri-Cities RC field, in the Tri-Cities, Washington.

We tried to come up with a large field that in this case, has 2 runways that can be flown from simultaneously, grass and paved runways, and we could have a third area for FPV racing. Dry camping is available too, and the city with hotels, airport, and rental cars is not far away. It is roughly 3.5 hours from Sea-Tac, and PTL airports, 3 hours from Spokane, and about 5.5 hours from Boise and similar large cities in Oregon. We want to demo all types of aircraft, and this field can have large scale gas, and turbines as well with no noise restrictions. Our goal is to have control line demo, and maybe have the ability to buddy handle folks that want to try it. So please plan now for next year s event. We tried like hell to make it on a weekend that didn't have a Father s Day, Mother s Day, graduation or similar, and still have good weather that usually isn't raining or 110 degrees. This isn't my show. This is your show, it's our show. The goal is to build our own Joe Nall type event! But We need your help to make this awesome! This event will be all inclusive. We will set aside time each day for demos of CL also AMA President Rich Hansen and Robert Dodgson, of sailplane fame has been awarded the AMA Hall of Fame. Rich Hansen will be presented his induction into the AMA Hall of Fame at the Jamboree. Also, Mandee Mikulski from the AMA foundation, and Tony Stillman the AMA Flying Site Coordinator and owner of Radio South/Radio Repair Guy will also attend. We may even get someone from Boeing to show up. Another potential highlight will be sailplane designs exhibited. They plan to launch them following the award ceremony is concluded. They will launch off winches and high starts!! Seems like every week there is another fabulous update. More news to come, so stay tuned. OK comments from the Editor, besides what I said about the glider exhibit, it is great to see Bob Dodgson receive recognition for his many contributions to glider flying. I know that many flyers in the NWSS have flown his gliders in competition. Myself the first Flap/Aileron glider I had was the Camino, like wise it was the first Flap/Aileron glider that my wife Sandie flew. Before we had programable transmitters, Bob came up some unique mechanical mixing devices that allowed horizontal stab compensation when the flaps came down, plus Crow at the same time, plus several more. Since I didn t fly some of his earlier designs, can t comment on them, but the Windsong, Pixie and Anthem were ones that we flew for many years. I hope that our District XI AMA VP Bryan Wood contacts the various clubs in the NWSS for advice, info and help with the Soaring aspect of our hobby, for this Jamboree. OK now back to the regular scheduled Newsletter. But wait, that is it for this issue. Fair winds and Strong Lift. Jim

Thermal Search August 4-5, 2018 By Kevin Martin After numerous days in the 90s the weather finally cooled down a bit for the weekend of Thermal Search. However, even with temps in the low to mid 80s it was still hot there was almost no breeze either day. What little wind that passed through was stirred up by passing thermals. Lift was consistent both days, but so was the sink. A few times planes seemed to be falling out of the air so rapidly that it appeared like radio failure (I ve never witnessed sink like that at Brooks). Note that the high score for Saturday was achieved by Jim Gibson in RES class. Saturday RES (5000 possible) Sunday RES (5000 possible) 1 Jim Gibson Chris Staats Jason Hood Jim Gibson Chris Staats Kevin Martin Dan Fiedler Jason Hood Kevin Martin John Long John Long Richard Van Dijk Bill Keenan Richard Van Dijk 4031 Expert Expert 1 Jim Frahm Anne Stimers David Portwood David Portwood Jim Pugh Jim Gibson Anne Stimers Tom Brightbill Jim Frahm Tom Culmsee Tom Culmsee Jim Pugh Jim Gibson Sandie Pugh Robin Robinson Robin Robinson Sandie Pugh Tom Brightbill 3820 Competitor Competitor 1 Chris Staats John Long Sherrell Steinhauer John Long 4817 Two Meter 3 Mike Skeen Chris Staats Jason Hood Keith Ragsdale David Portwood Dan Fiedler Tom Brightbill Bill Keenan 4397 Two Meter 1 Keith Ragsdale Jason Hood Tom Brightbill David Portwood 3847

Dennis Otter Memorial Contest Report. By Sandie and Jim Pugh Saturday s contest opened with 80% threat of rain; however, thermals were abundant and cooler temperatures were a nice change from the heat we have been having. Some minor mishaps, well one might be considered major, one flyer got too close to one of the glider eating trees. He did get the name and phone number of a tree climbing person from Seth for a retrieval operation (at this writing, recovery has been unsuccessful). When a storm cell did push in about the middle of the 4 th round it came with buckets of water and strong wind; but it didn t last long. After consulting weather radar the CD decided to stop the contest at this point. Hanger flying continued at Pete s in Carnation. We had a nice turnout with 19 pilots and 22 gliders with some of the flyers flying two classes. We are starting to see more and more electric launched gliders at these contests. Sunday s weather was better with light winds and warmer temperatures, but thermals were harder to find. We had 13 pilots and 17 gliders flying again with some of the pilots flying two classes. We were able to get in 5 rounds. Thanks to Tom Culmsee of PASS for doing the scoring. And thanks to everyone for helping with the teardown on Sunday. That s a big job when you have winches. It was a fun contest with friends from Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Eastern Washington flying in the contest. Saturday Expert Open Sunday Expert Open 1.
