1 Hello and welcome to Lincoln! We are the Entz team for 2015 and we re responsible for Lincoln s student run social events and entertainment. We re responsible for running all the activities lined up for you in Freshers Week so you ll probably be seeing a lot of us, whether we re walking people to clubs or running events like 30 Questions. We re organising everything for you in Freshers Week so there s no need to buy any tickets or make any plans before you get here! We ve also got loads of events planned for the rest of the year, like pub quizzes, bops and film nights, so to keep up with all this make sure you join the Facebook group Lincoln College Entz Hopefully these pages will give you some information on a few aspects of Oxford that you won t find in the prospectus. 2 A LINCOLN A-Z Ascension Day: the JCR Committee throws pennies at small children from Lincoln Tower and we poison people from Brasenose with ivy-laced beer Bop: a mega-party in Deep Hall, characterised by ridiculous costumes and cheesy playlists Clubbing: the names you need to know are Bridge, Lola Lo s, Wahoo, Warehouse, Park End, Plush, Cellar, Camera (and Purple Turtle if you re feeling desperate). You don t need high heels or bodycon or your best Calvin Kleins in Oxford we re all too tired to dress up so panic not about panic-buying clubbing outfits for Freshers Week it s all very casual Deep Hall: Lincoln College s bar-in-thecellar, heavily subsidised and run by the wonderful Simon. Provides light lunches as well as drinks. Site of Bops, pub quizzes and open mic nights Entz: the Entz team provides for your entertainment, selling you club tickets and organising everything from bops to beer pong tournaments to college trips to G&Ds Freshers Week: a week of debauchery and fire safety talks, taking place (mostly) before the work begins so you can get to know your fellow first years. Please don t worry about booking club nights or anything as your fabulous Entz team has bought a large number of tickets for you, which you can buy when you arrive G&Ds: sells the best ice cream in Oxford Hall: this is where we eat; there s a formal and informal sitting nightly except for Saturdays Imp: Lincoln s mascot, to be found in Deep Hall. Also the name of our illustrious and extremely truthful and serious student newspaper JCR: stands for Junior Common Room, meaning both the physical space where undergrads can hang out and make toast, and the undergraduate body as a whole King s Arms: both the oldest and most expensive pub in Oxford Lodge: you have to go through the Porters Lodge to get into college the porters are your best friends, trained in

3 First Aid and top chat always send them a smile, they do a marvellous job Matriculation: when you dress up in your sub fusc and get sworn over in Latin in the Sheldonian theatre and *officially* become a member of Oxford University and spend the afternoon celebrating the shortest and least relevant tradition remaining part of the Oxford calendar Nick Clegg: Lincoln is apparently the Nick Clegg of Turl Street, friendly and liberal and not too weird Oxmas: celebrated on the 25 th of November, Oxmas is a chance for us to celebrate Christmas with our friends in college before we head home President: Sufyen Van Wardenbourg Buras-Stubbs will be your JCR President for this academic year, representing your interests to College Quack: this is what Lincoln s resident ducks say. They re very polite Rector: the head of Lincoln College, Professor Henry Woudhuysen he edits the Arden Shakespeares! Sub fusc: Oxford official academic dress, worn for exams and matriculation you can buy your gown and cap once you re here in the shop on Turl Street. These are the official guidelines: 1. one of: dark suit with dark socks, or dark skirt with black tights or stockings, or dark trousers with dark socks 2. dark coat if required 3. black shoes 4. plain white collared shirt or blouse 5. white bow tie, black bow tie, black full-length tie, or black ribbon. The Turf: an Education in Intoxication, Oxford s most famous student pub and purveyor of Old Rosie, Somerset s most pungent cider Union: The Oxford Union is the university s most notorious and rich society, possibly run by the Illuminati. Union politics are nasty, but Union speakers are illustrious and interesting. It s got a nice library. And a bar. Vac Proj: Lincoln s charity gives disadvantaged children in the local area a fun week away each summer you can volunteer to be part of this later in the year, but information will be available during Freshers Week Welfare: your welfare team will look after you they re fully trained in peer support and ready to help you take on any problem, small or large

4 exams: don t worry about these for a bit, but at the end of first year you ll take your prelims, which you must pass in order to get into the Final Honours School Turl Yard: Turl Yard is the nice new bit across from College where some classes and meetings take place. You ll also find an entrance to the Mitre there, which is the warren where the second years live, and the Mitre Common Room Zoo: z is tricky, zoos are fun

5 Lincoln Events These are just a few examples of popular events run in college throughout the year that you have to look forward to! Pub Quizzes Pub quizzes are a real favourite among Lincolnites and are hosted in Deep Hall by Simon, our barman. They make for a very fun, chilled out evening and can get quite competitive! Film Nights Film nights, though very low key, are often a really nice way of winding down and relaxing all together. There are always loads of great snacks provided (and let s be honest, this is probably what brings people running). Ceilidh Open Mic Nights Open Mic Nights are always a very popular addition to the term, with anyone being able to share their musical talent and perform a song or two. Really enjoyable whether you re performing or just spectating. The ceilidh was a highlight of Hilary term last year with the endless hilarity of everyone inevitably failing to get the steps right! G&D s trips G&D s, Oxford s best ice cream, is always worth a visit and occasionally there will be organised trips as a college. It s traditional, for example, to go for a G&D s together on the first night of Freshers Week. Comedy Nights Visiting comedians perform short pieces down in Deep Hall, which tend to be hilarious and a really fun and different way to spend the evening. There s normally a 2 entrance charge, but all the money raised goes to the mental health charity Mind.

6 Pubs and Bars of Oxford Oxford has a great deal of traditional and modern pubs to offer, here we feature those most popular with students. You will encounter some of these during the organised pub-crawl after your Matriculation ceremony know as Matriculash! The Turf Tavern Busy student pub on a cobbled lane very popular with Lincolnites, not too expensive (for an Oxford pub) and sells Old Rosy, a famously strong cider. The Mitre Super close to Lincoln (the second years live above it!) but not generally frequented by students for a drink- though we hear the food is good! The Eagle and Child Quite small and famed for its old regulars, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lamb and Flag 500 year-old college pub with plenty of tweed and Oxbridge characters. King s Arms Rather pricey but a nice location- worth a visit! The Chequers Fairly traditional, plenty of whisky, and in a nice 16 th century building (if that s what you look for in a pub!) Duke of Cambridge Excellent cocktails and a regular happy hour- it s quite smart but it s also worth it. House Quite chic, not too expensive (as cocktails go) and fairly close to Lincoln. We re fans. Freud s Used to be a church so it s really cool-looking, now a cocktail bar. Raoul s Bar Fairly intimate lounge-type bar which gets a nice buzz later in the evening, extensive cocktail menu.

CLUBS Oxford clubs do receive a lot a criticism but though they maybe slightly sticky and occasionally cheesy, it doesn t tend to stop people from having a really good time.

The clubbing scene is fairly casual as far as dress goes and the nights tend to get going fairly early, at about 10:30 or 11pm as they often close by 2am.

Drinks and entry are generally fairly cheap and there s always a busy club night going on somewhere in the city centre. The clubbing scene is fairly casual as far as dress goes and the nights tend to get going fairly early, at about 10:30 or 11pm as they often close by 2am. Below is a guide to the Oxford clubs and which nights are best for which it is only a guide though, and obviously everyone has their own favourites! CAMERA Circular layout with cheap drinks and decent music. The downstairs is sometimes used for out of college bops. Go on a Tuesday or a Friday. BRIDGE One of Oxford s biggest clubs with two separate floors. Large outside area and some of the cheapest drinks, though losing people once inside is frequently a problem! Go on a Thursday. WAREHOUSE Fairly cheap and a decent VIP area. Often used as the location for the popular Itchy Feet night. Go on a Thursday or a Saturday. PARK END Technically called Lava Ignite, but always referred to as Park End, it is Oxford s biggest club and boasts three different floors. They also play the Pokemon theme at midnight, which is cool. Go on a Wednesday. THE PURPLE TURTLE Not particularly classy or particularly clean but free entry for all Oxford Union members so still fairly popular. Good if you re very, very broke. Go on a Saturday. VARSITY Pretty pricey so not hugely popular with students, but it s got an awesome rooftop bar with an amazing view and it s very close to college. Go on a Saturday. LOLA LO S Quite small with cheap drinks and a convenient location. Often frequented by Lincolnites. Go on a Tuesday. RAPONGI Definitely the runt of the Oxford club litter, it s small and not that popular. If you re desperate for a change, give it a go! Go on a Sunday. CELLAR A bit grimy, located underground and the home of Oxford s hipsters Cellar is still a pretty good night out. Its Supermarket nights are especially popular. Go on a Tuesday or a Thursday. WAHOO Another big one, which people seem to either love or hate. It s right next door to Bridge and its top floor supposedly plays actual house music. Go on a Friday.
