1 Roseville District Cricket Club Monthly newsletter edition 2 January 2018 Established 1918 A big welcome to players, parents, sponsors and social members of Roseville District Cricket Club. With only 3 rounds remaining it s certainly coming towards the business end of the season, with a few teams still in the hunt for a finals birth. Our Frank Gray Shield team play their last round this Sunday V Pennant Hills, needing a bonus point win to hopefully secure 2 nd place in the Sydney Sixers conference. With all squad members eligible for Frank Gray Shield next season, it certainly does build well for future success heading in to our 100 th season. 1 st Grade (7 points from the top 6) and Tim Creer Cup (8 th place) in their competitions top 8 structure; also hold great hopes of a late season surge to see Roseville return to finals cricket. Plenty of social events around the club to log in to your diaries, which you ll see listed in the newsletter. Good luck to all players for this rounds one day clash V Epping Bulls! 2 Biv s 28 year team The current chairman is no stranger to picking a team and making the tough decisions. With the 100 year team to be announced at the anniversary dinner on October 20, Biv selects his best of that he s played alongside over his 28 years at RDCC. Here it is - The challenge set by the club secretary to select my top team from the many players I have had the fortune of playing with throughout my 28 years at Roseville has proved to be extremely difficult. To those wonderful players who missed out on selection in the final team, I apologize. There are so many worthy players who would not look out of place in this line-up. Special mention to Michael Annis-Brown, Will Reynolds, Rob Ambrogio, Anthony Lenehan, Damien Barrett, Will Sweeney, Vinay Verma, Andrew Peake, Matt Thomas and Grant Joslin. All fantastic players and I enjoyed every minute of sharing the pitch with them. So here goes in batting order: Opening the batting and captain is Jack Davies. Whilst he was at the end of his career when I had the honour of opening with him, he still hit the ball bloody hard. He captained me to two premierships in the early 1990s. His attitude to always push for the win, regardless of the circumstance saw us win the unwinnable games. Outstanding gully fieldsman. Getting the other opening position just ahead of Shijit Chandran is current 1s player Matthew Gubbay. The saying goes it is a big man s game and none come much bigger than Gubbs. When he gets going he has the ability to score all around the ground. He always values his wicket and puts the team first. Number three is Rowan Harry. During the mid 1990s Rowan held first grade together. Leading from the front and hitting into cow corner at ease. He scored 7 centuries for the club, but none better than his 100 v Burwood at Rothwell Oval. Coming in at second drop is the elegant John Blake. Whilst he only played a few seasons before chasing the corporate dollar, John showcased unbelievable ability on both the front and back foot. There is no better sight than seeing John in full flight. Fantastic athlete. The left-handed Antony Gowthorp comes in at number 5. The hardest player I have had to captain. Always wanting to be in the game with bat or ball. I have lost count of how many games that Gow influenced in the Roses favour. He scored 7 centuries for the club and in his later years become an extremely handy seam bowler. Number 6 is club legend Mal Grant. Mal scored over 10,000 runs for the mighty Rose. Not much more to say. Even in his older years, Mal still had an amazing pair of hands in the field. His one-handed effort at short cover in first grade is a fond memory.

3 Rich High, right hand bat, left-arm quick secures the number 7 role ahead of Phil Keene. Like Gow, he was an extremely difficult player to captain. He never let you take the ball out of his hand. Amazing natural ability. Stix retired way too early, otherwise would be up there are one of the club s great all-rounders. Current first grade captain Dan Lenehan is the spin bowling all-rounder. Some would argue he could bat higher, but on so many occasions Lenny has rescued the side coming in lower down the order. If he continues to play for another 5 seasons, he will break many more club records. His bowling has seen him challenge the best Shires batsmen. A good clubman. Another current 1s player, Will Blunt grabs a pace bowling spot ahead of Matt Hill, Chris Raper and Charlie Caban. Arguably the other three mentioned players were quicker, but Wills ability to bowl long spells, do a bit each way, has seen him be a consistent performer over the last six seasons. Will also has the ability to open the batting in the short form of the game. I will always remember our 100 run opening stand at Alan Davidson Oval in 40 degree heat. Great motivator of men. When he speaks you listen! The wicket-keeper is Paul Mulvany. His ability up to the stumps is of the highest quality. Soft hands, a fantastic cricket brain, good talker and always able to lift the fielding standard of the entire team. Mulos is a fighter, gritty, determined and capable of turning a match with this aggressive batting. Would not look out of place batting at number 7. Opening the attack is the reliable left-arm quick Peter Brown. Over 550 wickets for the club, 50 wickets in a season, grand final man of the match. Brownie is a true team man. He was willing to bowl all day if that was what the captained requested. As he matured he lost a few yards in pace, but that did not stop him from taking wickets. If the clouds were out and the wind was blowing you knew Brownie was in for a good day. 12 th man is Grant Vidler. Statistically there are better, but as many players who had the privilege of playing with Vids will tell you, his pre-game stories, on field banter and general nastiness towards the opposition was legendary. A real old school, hard head. Team Manager/Scorer is Ian Field. Extremely organised, the neatest writer in a scorebook. In the 1990s his off-field administration contributed to the clubs on-field success.

Fitz whilst performing on-field has been a huge influence off it too, helping the younger players at the club with their game at training. Thanks Warringah J

5 SOCIAL EVENT NUMBER 3 ROSEVILLE TRIVIA NIGHT DATE: Saturday 3 rd February 2018 TIME: 7pm onwards WHERE: Roseville Chase Oval clubhouse. COST: $10 admission FOOD/DRINK: $5 Burgers, $4 Beer and wine. RAFFLE: $20 ticket with a $500 cash first prize. There will also be two runners up prizes. After the success of the Roseville Trivia night last season we re once again aiming for a big attendance, night of laughs, testing trivia and fundraising for our great club. It s a known fact that Roseville, although not the best at cricket within the shires competition, are the smartest. Recent data showing our Good Weekend quiz scores from Saturday s Sydney Morning Herald pits us as the smartest club in the cricket community, so the competition will be fierce. This is a family friendly event so please bring your wives, girlfriends, family, friends and acquaintances. Hosting the event will be the charismatic Tim Clifford. After missing 6 rounds of cricket due to mate s weddings he should have plenty of fresh material as MC. BATTLE OF THE FOSSILS Firstly I do apologise if anyone takes offence to that heading. If you re not down at Pennant Hills no.1 supporting our Frank Gray team this Sunday, then the next best seat in the house will be at Roseville Park as our two masters teams go head to head. Roseville Navy V Roseville White commences at 12:15pm with a BBQ being set up on the hill to create a carnival like atmosphere. SAVE THE DATE RDCC Presentation Night 17/18 Further detail will follow for this event over the next month but for now mark Saturday April 7 th 2018 in to your diaries.
