THE PREAMBLE: 2.1 The Spirit of Cricket: Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws, but also within the Spirit of the game. Any action, which is seen to abuse this spirit, causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains. There are two laws, which place the responsibility for the team s conduct firmly on the captain. a. Responsibility of Captains: The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws. b. Player s Conduct: i. In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticizing by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner that might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player s captain, and instruct the latter to take action. 6

7 ii. The umpire and the opposing captain have the option of citing players to the SDCA Judiciary Committee. 2.2 Fair and unfair play: According to the laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play. The umpires may intervene at any time, and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required. 2.3 The umpires are authorised to intervene in cases of: a. Time wasting, b. Damaging the pitch, c. Dangerous or unfair bowling, d. Tampering with the ball, e. Any other action or behaviours that they consider to be unfair or that contravene the Spirits of Cricket, Laws of Cricket or the SDCA A to Z. 2.4 The Spirit of the Game involves Respect for: a. Your opponents b. Your own captain and team c. The role of the umpires d. The games traditional values 2.5 It is against the Spirit of the Game: a. To dispute an umpires decision by word, action or gesture; b. To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire; c. To indulge cheating or any disruptive practice, for instance; i). To appeal knowing that the batsman is not out; ii) To advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing; iii) To seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one s own side. 7

8 2.6 Violence: There is no place for any act of violence before or after a match or on the field of play. 2.7 Players: Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket fixture. Every player is expected to make an important contribution to this. The players, umpires and scorers in the game of cricket may be of either gender and the laws apply equally to both. 3. ALCOHOL & SMOKING: 3.1. The consumption of alcohol by players or officials is prohibited during playing hours SDCA supports Shoalhaven City Council s Smoke Free Policy on all playing fields, sports grounds and outdoor sporting facilities. Enforcement of this policy will be supported by persuasion and self-policing Note: The Shoalhaven City Council Policy No: 12/180 states, The Council prohibits the supply and sale of drinks in glass bottles or glass containers on Council managed sports grounds. 4. All teams in the senior competition are allowed to make use of the alternate player rule in two day matches Teams may nominate up to 13 players for 2 day matches, with two players able to be interchanged on the second day. Players involved in the change need to be nominated for a specific day, i.e. John Smith (Day One) replaced by, Dan Jones (Day two) Team nominations, noting the alternate players, are to be handed to the opposing captain prior to the toss. The alternate players are to be highlighted/ noted on the score book and MyCricket Alternate player nomination in games will be recognized for the purpose of qualification for semifinals If, at the end of the first days play, the 1st alternate player is still batting then at the start of the second day the 2nd alternate player shall continue batting. Player 1shall be deemed retired (not out) for the purposes of averages but not count for the bowling team for bonus points or for and against averages. Runs for each batsman shall be recorded against each individual batsman. 8

9 5.6. If the 1st nominated player has batted and was dismissed on the first day but the team is still batting, the 2nd nominated player cannot bat in that innings. However, that player must then play the next match in that lower grade. If unavailable for that match, the player must play the next available match in the lower grade. If applicable, the over shall be completed by another bowler who shall have neither bowled the previous over nor be allowed to bowl the next over. d. Should a dispute or uncertainty regarding the application of this Playing Condition occur during play, the Umpires shall make the final decision on its application based on information available from the Scorers and other sources EXAMPLES (all assuming bowlers aged 16, and bowling fast unless otherwise indicated): a. A bowler bowls 4 overs, and is taken off by the Captain. He is brought back from the other end after overs. He may bowl a further 2 overs, after which he cannot bowl for at least 6 overs from the same end as the bowlers concluded spell. b. A bowler bowls 5 overs, and is then taken off. He returns to bowl 15 overs later. This is considered a new spell, and he can bowl 6 overs in that spell subject to his daily limit. 22

23 c. A bowler bowls 4 overs, and the players then take a 60-minute break due to inclement weather. He may bowl a further 6 overs because the bowler has rested the equivalent of 17 overs. d. A bowler bowls 4 overs, and the players then take a 40-minute luncheon interval. He then waits a further 20 minutes after the interval, and resumes bowling. This is the commencement of a new bowling spell, and he is permitted to bowl up to 6 overs in this spell (subject to his daily limit) A bowler who bowls 6 overs just prior to the end of a day can resume on the next playing day with a new bowling spell, and has a limit on that day of 16 overs. Note: All bowlers in the Under 12 and younger age bracket shall only be permitted to bowl 8 deliveries in an over (including wides and/or no balls). Where this restriction is perceived by the umpires to affect the result of the match by not allowing the batting side access to six legal deliveries in the final over of their innings the umpires may instruct the captain to use another bowler or bowlers to complete six legal deliveries in that over, so long as the bowler/bowlers so used do not exceed their daily maximum allocation of overs A bowler bowls 10 overs of slow bowling, and then continues his spell, but bowls 2 overs of pace bowling. He then reverts to slow bowling. He is limited to a spell of 6 overs from the time he commenced pace bowling, after which time a break of 6 overs from the same end as the bowlers concluded spell. The overs bowled prior to his pace overs are ignored totally from both his bowling spell and daily limits, but further overs of slow bowling after his pace overs are treated as though they were still being bowled at pace. 36. LATE STARTS: The umpires are to be in position on the field five minutes before the scheduled starting time. If play does not start within 15 minutes of the appointed time the umpire may on appeal declare the match lost by the team unable to or refusing to proceed with the match and such team is deemed to have forfeited. A team fielding six or less players is deemed to have forfeited. 37. LAWS OF CRICKET: Except in matters covered in the competition rules in this document, matches will be played in accordance with the laws as set down by the I.C.C. and recognized by Cricket Australia. 23
