NEWSLETTER MOSMAN BOWLING CLUB MAY 2016 Foundation Stone Centenary

O ur 3 Men's Pennant teams are continuing their positive start to the 2016 season. At the half-way mark the Grade 4 and Grade 6 teams remain undefeated, and sit on top of their respective ladders. The Grade 7 team is a close 3rd on their ladder, having lost just 2 games, and each by 1 shot!! May all teams continue on to the Finals in June - well done to all Pennant players. The 100th Anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone to our Clubhouse was celebrated by around 100 MBC Members on April 15th, sixty of whom enjoyed social mufti bowls prior to the function. We were honoured to have the Mayor of Mosman, Councillor Peter Abelson with us, and like his predecessor in 1916, he proposed a toast to the continuing prosperity of our Club. The President of Zone 9, Joe Quittner and MWBC North Shore President Billie Maas also participated in the festivities. Our thanks once again to Peter McAdam and his team for another successful event. We are planning a dinner to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Clubhouse for September. Our Anzac Day event was also very well attended, with 60 members enjoying a BBQ lunch before the commemoration service where veteran Jim Kemp presented The Ode. 17 ends of bowls were then played in perfect Autumn weather. The Waterman Trophy has continued through April, with Mosman performing well, losing just 2 of the 7 Rounds played so far. The Waterman Final Series will be played in May, with the Final scheduled for Wednesday May 25th. May will also feature the annual Alex Macpherson Carnival on Friday 6th and Monday 9th. Response from Zone 9 Clubs and from Mosman BC has been strong, and we are looking forward to another successful event. Billie Maas, P r e s i d e n t North Shore D i s t r i c t W o m e n ' s B o w l i n g A s s o c i a t i o n a n d J o e Q u i t t n e r, P r e s i d e n t Zone 9 District celebrating the f o u n d a t i o n s t o n e anniversary. 6. Develop your weight control skills so that you can add or subtract 75 cm of weight as required. This is especially important for a skip as an ability to control your weight can result in moving a jack to a much more favourable position resulting in added shots for your team. 7. One of the most important skills a skip must possess is player management. This entails encouraging your players to achieve at a higher level being sure to acknowledge good shots, or well played position bowls with the appropriate accolade. No bowler knowingly tries to play a bad shot, so overt criticism is counterproductive. Praise good effort and encourage the bowler who plays an errant shot. 8. Learn your player s strengths and weaknesses. Learn the motion and draw of each of their bowls so that you can design shots which both improve the score and enhance the chances of a successful delivery and outcome. 9. Keep the team informed as to the shots held or lost, position relative to the jack of their last bowl and the overall strategy or game plan you have devised. Remember that bowls is a team sport and every member is equally important. Skips who do not communicate well are not held in high regard. SUMMARY Fine-tune your draw shot. You will be playing it 70% of the time. Bowl equally as effectively with either hand at all lengths. Develop skills at bowling off-line, to the ditch and round other often short) bowls. Practise your weighted shots for some portion of each practise session. Practise weight control such that you can change your bowl s length by 75 cm with confidence. If deficient you may want to work on your communication skills. Be positive!!

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL SKIPS (As developed and produced by Tony Taylor) 1. Must possess a very good, reliable draw shot that can be played with either hand at any length. A successful skip will probably possess the best draw shot on the team. 2. An ability to change hands on alternate shots while maintaining effectiveness. Changes in the position of the jack and/or the presence of an opponent bowl in your line often results in the skip being required to change hands for his next shot. You must be proficient at this. 3. An ability to assess the condition of the head and select the shot, or type of shot that has the greatest chance of success. This assessment needs to consider the game score, the overall leader board score, the number of ends remaining in the game and any factors that affect the outcome of the game. Keep in mind the consequences of missing this shot and its result on the game. If you miss your shot what is your opponent likely to do with his shot? 4. An ability to draw effectively to a relocated jack. Especially critical positions are jacks near the ditch and/or near the boundary lines or jacks lying among opponent bowls. A skip will often be in a position wherein he is required to save from an unfavourable head. This will entail having to draw around, underneath or through opponent bowls to improve the team's position. Saving from an unfavourable position is one of the skips most important tasks. 5. An ability to play medium to heavily weighted shots with skill and accuracy when required. When driving or playing a weighted shot the skip is the one most likely to have to play this shot. Drives are by their very unpredictable nature desperation shots whose outcome is problematic at best. If you can hit a weighted shot with your first bowl then you can use your second bowl to draw the shot or ameliorate the situation as required. Consider attacking a head early (perhaps with the number two bowler if he possesses weight skills) when you face an unfavourable situation. A hit from the number two position leaves you with four bowls to draw the shot from a relocated jack. ALL MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND OUR NEXT PRESIDENT'S Q & A TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY 11th June 2016 In the Clubhouse 11am to 12pm The session will be attended by MBC Board Members and a representative from the Selection Committee. They will welcome your comments and suggestions and answer any questions. If you are unable to attend, please forward any communication to the President prior to the session. A complimentary sandwich will be provided to all participants at the conclusion. For catering purposes please indicate your attendance on the list on the noticeboard by Wednesday 8 /6/16

H APPY 43 rd BIRTHDAY MOSMAN WOMEN S BOWLING CLUB MWBC is celebrating it s 43 rd Birthday this month. To honour this occasion we are having a low-key celebration on Tuesday 3rd May. We will conduct normal social bowls [phone in by 9.30am, cards called at 9.45am]. We would be delighted to see bowlers from MWBC and MBC join us. MWBC's birthday also coincides with the first match in the Norma Field Trophy competition for It will be played between teams from St Ives and Roseville playing against teams from Mosman. In attendance on the day, as our guests, will be our Life Members: Norma Field, Isa Hutchinson, Gerry Lockyer, Ailsa Maccallum and Julie Hayden. To honour the occasion, and acknowledge Norma s presence, at lunchtime we will have a scone birthday cake after a picnic lunch. The pennant season is now completed. The Grade 1 side [after moving up from Grade 2 last year] played very well and were delighted to come 2 nd to Neutral Bay. The Mosman Grade 3 side had an up and down season, finishing on a winning note, and coming 4 th in their division and 7 th overall. Thank you to all pennant players for your commitment and for representing Mosman so well. The Pennant winners were: Neutral Bay Grades 1 and 2, Lane Cove/ Warringah Grade 3, and St Ives Grade 4. We congratulate all winners and wish them well as they go on to the Regional and, hopefully, State play-offs. The Regional Saturday Challenge series of matches culminated in a final Gala Day at North Manly on 16th April. The two Mosman teams enjoyed their matches, with mixed success. The overall winners were a delighted North Sydney team. All players, particularly those players who can only play on the weekend, enjoyed the competition, (cont'd page 8) 5) An ability to play medium to heavily weighted shots with skill and accuracy when required. Especially critical in number three bowlers is an ability to understand completely the skip s verbal instructions regarding the weight of the shot. Too often the playing of weighted shots by the number two or number three bowler results in bowls finishing in the ditch when the skip is asking for a one, two or three yard weighted shot. Weight does not necessarily mean ditch weight unless the skip specifically asks for ditch weight! 6) Develop your weight control skills so that you can add or subtract 75 cm of weight with skill. This is especially important for a number three bowler. Your weight control skills are critical to the success of the team. The number three bowler is the pressure release valve for the skip. If the number three fails to execute his tasks, especially when down on the score during the end, the skip then becomes the last hope for a score or a reduction in the opponent's score. Constantly and continually putting pressure on the skip's bowls to save will generally result in a loss. 7) Follow your skip s instructions exactly. It is the skips job to plot strategy and build the head. Questioning your skip s calls or judgment leads to team dissention and will greatly affect team performance. 8) During the play of the lead and second s bowls be an active supporter of their efforts. Words of encouragement, high-fives for good shots, handing bowls to the player on the mat are all activities that build confidence and comradeship among team members. 9) Learn to read a head so that an accurate assessment of the status of the head, and ways to improve its condition, can be relayed to the skip when he requests this information. SUMMARY Fine-tune your draw shot. You will be playing it 75% of the time. Bowl equally as effectively with either hand at all lengths. Develop skills at bowling off-line and to the ditch. Practise your weighted shots for some portion of each practise session. Practise weight control such that you can change your bowl s length by 75 cm with confidence.

6) Develop your weight control skills so that you can add or subtract 75 cm of weight with skill. 7) Follow your skip s instructions exactly. When the skip instructs you to add a meter to your last bowl s length then he means add one meter and not more. Too often a number two hears the word "weight and then stops listening to the rest of the command resulting in a bowl finishing in the ditch or far removed from what the skip asked of the number two. Avoid running your own agenda at all costs. SUMMARY Develop and fine-tune your draw shot. You will be playing it 80% of the time. Bowl equally as effectively with either hand at all lengths. Develop skills at bowling off-line. Practise your weighted shots for some portion of your practise sessions. Practise weight control such that you can change your bowl s length by 75 cm with confidence. CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL THIRDS (As developed and produced by Tony Taylor) 1) 2) Must possess a very good, reliable draw shot that can be played with either hand at any length. A "one armed number three bowler is a massive liability to a fours team. An ability to change hands on alternate shots while maintaining effectiveness. Changes in the position of the jack and/or the presence of an opponent bowl in your line often results in the skip requiring you to change hands for your next shot. You must be proficient at this. 3) An ability to reach the head consistently and effectively is a must in a number three. This may often require some form of weighted shot to either wrest or remove an opponent bowl. 4) An ability to draw effectively to a relocated jack. Especially critical positions are jacks near the ditch and/or near the boundary lines. Well, it can be said it was a terrific function on Friday 15th April. The laying of the foundation stone a century ago was celebrated by nearly 100 members and guests and it proved to be a very happy occasion. A chance remark by Ailsa Maccallum in March, resulted in the event being instigated. Members started to arrive at the club from 2:30 onwards for mufti bowls, with 60 bowlers playing two sets of triples over 7 ends in each set. Confusion reigned supreme as the Mosman Daily s photographer tried to get our members to make the number 100 with bowls, and then group behind the number for the photo, but after a few minutes, success the photo was taken and appeared in the Mosman Daily accompanied by a newsy article. Following bowls, champagne was served on the verandah of the Pavilion and food was passed around. Our guests for the day were the Mayor of Mosman, Cr. Peter Abelson, The President of Zone 9,Joe Quittner and his lovely wife, Liz, the President of the Northern Districts Ladies Bowls, Billie Maas and her husband, Steven Maas (President of Gordon Bowling Club) and John Nelson, Chairman of Mosman Bendigo Bank who has been a great supporter of Mosman Bowling Club. Members and guests were welcomed by President Stephen Lewis who then invited our Patron, Ian Renton, to deliver his address which was eloquent and extremely interesting to the gathered throng, as he traced the beginnings of our club from 1901 and how there was a bit of acrimony between the club s tennis players and bowlers, resulting in the bowlers buying out the tennis group and erecting another green. Finally, he discussed the replacement of the original clubhouse with the Pavilion and described the gaiety of the crowd that attended the laying of the clubhouse foundation stone a century ago, by the then President, Mr Bill McLeod. The Mayor then toasted the ongoing prosperity of our club, followed by the cutting of the cake by Joe Quittner and Billie Maas. The members who attended the initial event in w o u l d have been proud of us!

7) Bowl to your skip s instructions without question. It is his job to plot strategy, not yours. 8) Develop coping skills to counter adverse conditions. This usually entails practising draw shots in windy and/or wet conditions. Also practise on both slow and very fast greens to enable you to develop proper weight control skills. Coping skills usually involve some sort of selective memory. When you play a bad shot you must get it out of your head immediately so that you can concentrate on your correcting shot. Dwelling on bad shots will sink you. SUMMARY Roll jacks in practise until you are good at it over all lengths. Develop a good reliable draw shot that you can get up to the head and onto the centreline. Develop draw shot proficiency with both hands at any length. Develop weight control so that you can adjust to a relocated jack or to a position behind the head as indicated by the skip. CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL SECONDS (As developed and produced by Tony Taylor) 1) Must possess a very good, reliable draw shot that can be played with either hand at any length. A "one armed" number two bowler is a liability to a triples or a fours team. 2) An ability to change hands on alternate shots while maintaining effectiveness. Changes in the position of the jack and/or the presence of an opponent bowl in your line often results in the skip requiring you to change hands for your next shot. You must be proficient at this. 3) An ability to reach the head consistently. A second must avoid short bowls at all costs. 4) An ability to draw effectively to a relocated jack. Especially critical positions are jacks near the ditch and/or near the boundary lines. A second who can bowl "off-line is a real asset to a team. 5) An ability to play weighted shots with skill and accuracy when required. Especially critical are skills with swingers and with yard-on shots to trail the jack or wrest an opposing bowl. Many skips use their number two to disturb the head early in an end so as to avoid an unfavourable position becoming much more difficult later in the end. A number two who can play weight is a valuable asset.

by Jeff Hole Coaching Tips from Zone 9 This article has appeared on the Zone 9 website and we thought it was worth publishing here. Please note the continuing reference to the disaster of delivering a short bowl. CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL LEAD BOWLS (As developed and produced by Tony Taylor) 1) An ability to consistently roll the jack to within one meter of the length indicated by the skip. Failure to do so hampers the skip's strategy to best attack the opposition. 2) An ability to bowl equally successfully with either hand and at any length. An inability to do this presents the opposition with a way to diminish your effectiveness by bowling to a length you do not like or bowling on your favoured hand so as to get in your way. 3) An ability to reach the head consistently. Avoid short bowls at all costs. If you are having difficulty reaching the head, then bowl to a point one meter behind the head. If you reach this point you have an effective bowl, if short of this point then you are near the jack. Short bowls are of no use to your team especially if they are in the drawing lanes blocking a hand and creating an impediment to reaching the jack. Short bowls impede weighted shots by reducing the team's ability to attack the head effectively when required. 4) An ability to bowl such that your bowl consistently finishes on the centreline. Bowls finishing wide of the jack often act as backstops for opponent bowls to rest upon. The best lead bowl is a front resting toucher. 5) Strive to make both bowls count. A bowl within one half a mat length in front of the jack to one mat length behind the jack, and less than half a mat s width wide of the jack is an effective bowl. If you can consistently put two bowls in this envelope you will be sought after by every skip in the club. 6) Negate an opponent s good shot with one of your own. Get as near to your opponent s bowl as you possibly can. Resist the temptation to niggle at an opponent's bowl near the jack. If you miss this shot you put the team in jeopardy by having wasted your bowl (now not in the head) forcing the second to do your job for you.

From the MWBC President... continued from page 4 particularly the Gala Day, where all teams played each other while semi--finals and finals were played. Particular thanks must go to Julie Hayden for her initiation, organisation and smooth coordination of this very successful event on behalf of Mosman, Northshore District and Region 15. The Club Pairs Championship competition commences this month. Good luck to all who are playing in this competition. Please remember, you need an umpire and a controlling body on hand. On Sunday 17 April several Mosman members including 4 coaches, attended an Open Day at T u r r a m u r r a B o w l i n g C l u b conducted by Blind Bowlers NSW. They had an interesting morning being shown how to assist visually impaired bowlers, with special techniques demonstrated and trialled. Brian Fitzpatrick s daughter, Bronwyn, who is visually impaired, is having coaching from Julie Hayden at MBC at present and is showing great promise. Many members enjoyed the special Clubhouse Foundation Stone Centenary celebration on 15 April a n d t h e A N Z A C l u n c h, commemoration and bowls on Monday the 25 th. Thank you to P e t e r M c A d a m a n d y o u r hardworking team. My very grateful thanks to Glenda Weerden for taking on the vacant secretary s position on the executive committee of MWBC. Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Morag O Gorman, Mary Roche, and all members who have been under the weather. Enjoy the cooler weather and your bowling.

We were blessed with beautiful autumnal weather for this year s Anzac Day as around 70 members joined us for a delicious BBQ lunch before gathering on the lawns around the flagpole for a somber and respectful Anzac Day ceremony. P r e s id e nt S t ephen L e w i s addressed us and welcomed everyone to reflect upon the gallantry of the young men and women who served their country. Jim Kemp, resplendent with his service medals and with his family in attendance, honoured us by presenting The Ode, the fourth stanza of B i n y o n s poem. The Last Post w a s s o u n d e d followed by a minute s silence and then the flag was r a i s e d d u r i n g Reveille by another of our exservicemen, Richard Balnaves. Ladies President, Ann Barron, led us in The Lord s Prayer and the ceremony was completed with the singing of the National Anthem. Following the Ceremony, 66 bowlers then took to the greens for 17 ends of bowls. Thanks to Cathy Wilson, Robyn O B r i e n, Pam Snell, R o s e m a r y Cox and G r a h a m Mitchell for t h e i r assistance on the day, w i t h p articular thanks to our BBQers, Richard O Brien and Tony Bowra. Jennifer did her usual amazing job behind the scenes. In particular, thanks to our President, Stephen Lewis, Harry Evans, Jim Kemp Richard Balnaves and Ann Barron for presenting a wonderful Anzac Ceremony. Peter McAdam This year Mosman once again entered two teams in the Region 15 Saturday Challenge. Edwina Legg, Eva Turner and De Brown were the Mosman Mozzies and Diana Noel, Barbara Anderson and Angela Jones the Mosman Marvels. This competition is played over five weeks concurrently with the women s midweek pennant, and is designed to give working women and those unable to play midweek pennant the opportunity to play competitive bowls against other clubs. At the end of the five rounds the top four teams play-off on the final day and the ultimate winners go on to play against the winners of other zones in November. Fourteen teams played this year and both Mosman teams were unlucky in their draw, coming up against some very strong teams during the qualifying rounds. Unfortunately they didn t make the finals, but from all reports they enjoyed the bowls and especially the opportunity to play at different venues. The finals were played on Saturday 16 th at North Manly, and while the final was in progress the remaining twelve teams played a Carnival of two games of 10 ends. President Ann Barron was one of many spectators, and our Mosman teams acquitted themselves well, both winning one of their two games. The winners of the Carnival event were a North Manly team Kathy Redfern, Mary Bee and Jane Gibson. The overall winners of the Regional Challenge were the North Sydney team of Anne Coleman, Emma Brown and Kate Nobel. Everyone had a wonderful day and now look forward to the Saturday pairs which is played later in the year. Julie Hayden

At the April Board Meeting We will trial support stanchions on the School Green. Eight stanchions have been ordered and will be installed in May. We have sought and received proposals for the renovation of the Club kitchen. A commercial kitchen specialist has provided 4 alternative layouts, all within our budget, which were considered. It was agreed that the specialist should make a presentation to the Board in May, and if accepted work could commence in September. Plans for the new unisex bathroom, toilet and shower have now been finalised, with work scheduled to commence in July. We are working with Mosman Council to install a glass railing to the verandah, enhancing member safety. Our membership sub-committee is focussing on member retention, with particular attention paid to members who have joined within the last 2 years. Fellowship/pastoral attention will be paid to members who have been absent for a prolonged period. T h e w e b s i t e i s c u r r e n t l y undergoing modification, making it easier for members to navigate and access, and for the Club to update. Our Kiwi members Judy and Graham Mitchell have been instrumental in arranging a 6/7 day visit in November, where we will be hosted by the Tauranga, Rotorua and Remuera (Auckland) Bowling Clubs. Our group will depart Sydney on either Sunday 20th or Monday 21st November, with games played on Tuesday 22nd in Tauranga, Thursday 24th in Rotorua and Saturday 27th in Auckland. With air travel to NZ relatively inexpensive, and the AUS$/NZ$ exchange rate favourable, it is estimated the total cost will be around $2500 per person, this including air and road transport, a c c o m m o d a t i o n, m e a l s, miscellaneous expenses and of course, the bowls. We must limit our group to 24 bowlers, so please give this o p p o r t u n i t y y o u r e a r l i e s t consideration and advise the Mitchells or Stephen Lewis of your intended participation please. The full itinerary of the MBC 2016 Tour to New Zealand was presented and accepted. The week-long tour will take place in November. The Remuera (Auckland), Rotorua and Tauranga Bowling Clubs have confirmed our preferred dates.
