1 THE IOWA WBA BOWLER Publication of the Iowa State USBC Women s Bowling Assn. Vol. 33, No. 2, February, 2007 CHARLA S WEB Whew! The state tournament entries are in and all scheduled and I m looking forward to seeing and meeting so many of our bowlers during the tournament. We have 1024 teams, 2511 doubles, 5022 singles and 4781 all events, many more than our anticipated 850 teams. We added an extra weekend to accommodate as many entrants as we possibly could. The Des Moines Area USBC WBA is working hard to bring all our bowlers a fun and exciting tournament and experience in their community. Look for their article in the pages that follow! Substitutes will be needed for the state tournament. I am compiling a list of potential substitutes, if you have female bowlers who would like to fill in at the tournament in Des Moines, please contact me at I ll make every attempt to place them as needed. A reminder to local association managers to gather January 31, 2007 averages for your new bowlers from your leagues. Some of these averages will be needed for state tournament entrants. One of the most commonly asked questions regarding the state tournament is why we can t play cards while we bowl. This is a USBC rule, not ISUSBCWBA and since we abide by USBC rules, we cannot allow gambling while bowling. This rule is in place as the drawing of cards is based on luck of the draw, whereas, participating in brackets, etc, during the tournament, and winning is based on skill, rather than chance. Please refer to rule 15 on page 22 of the USBC General Playing Rules. The Annual Meeting of the ISUSBCWBA is planned for April 14 & 15, 2007 at the Marriott, 700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA. Information has been mailed to all local presidents, association managers and the delegates. The weekend will start with the Get Acquainted Party on Friday evening, April 13 th, and on Saturday morning the ISUSBCWBA will present their workshop. This is always a fun and informative time. The workshop and the annual meeting are open to all members, however only the delegates will be voting. Past membership/trading pins will be available at both bowling centers as well as at the annual meeting for a reduced price. We will also have other past items available at the annual meeting as we host our first ever garage sale. Hopefully, we ll have that charm that you re missing or other item that you just have to have. This will also help us to reduce and or eliminate old stock so we can look forward to new items! Do you have a member who has served your association for 10 consecutive years or more? If you do, please submit their name to the state office so our Service Award may be presented to them at the annual meeting. One award per person per association please! February 15, 2007 is the deadline for submitting the Deceased Member report to the state office. This form is purple in color, but this information can also be ed to the office. We honor our departed members at the Memorial Service on Sunday of Annual Meeting weekend. The Senior Tournament entries were mailed January 1 to the local association managers, and are being distributed to all bowling centers by the Iowa Bowling Proprietors Assn. office. Thank you to Jan Johnson and her staff for their help. This fun event is for our members 55 years and older, as of May 1, 2007, and is a doubles & singles and optional all events format. Please encourage your members to enter! Entries open February 1 and close April 1, The tournament is being held at Cardinal Lanes in Newton, IA. The 2008 Senior event is being planned in New Hampton! Please note the Smoking Survey is included again in this newsletter. Please give us your input regarding this issue! USBC is now providing our state association with membership records via a CD. With this new system, it most likely will greatly reduce, if not eliminate, a lot of the paperwork now done by the local association managers for the state office. More information will come on this later this season. This newsletter, The Iowa WBA Bowler, is published twice seasonally. We d like to publish more about our bowlers! Please send your articles and items of interest to the state office via , USPS or fax. The newsletter is mailed November 1 and February 1 yearly. Continued on page 2 IN THIS ISSUE... 5 When I first welcomed Pauline Stokes to our Thursday night Maple League, little did I know that an interview would soon follow. Once I learned that she was 79 years young and this was her first time ever bowling, I knew that I just had to talk to her. No, her average isn t that high, but there s so much more to this sport of bowling. Pauline s reasons for bowling are more about the friendship and, let s face it, the occasional night out, something we all crave. When Janneta Williams, her grandson s girlfriend, first asked her if she would consider bowling with she and Nikki Thomas on Thursday nights, she barely hesitated before coming back with an affirmative answer. Said Pauline, I m not doin nothin on Thursday nights so I ll go and try it. Not the answer you d expect from a 79 year old who had never picked up a bowling ball in her life, let alone bowled. Asked if any of her family PAULINE STOKES - One Spunky Lady Greater Cedar Valley USBC (Waterloo) or her husband were bowlers, to my surprise, she answered No. Now she not only has her own ball, but bowling bag and shoes also. It was something new, so why not give it a shot. She stated that she did wonder if a little arthritis in her fingers would bother her when bowling but other than that she didn t have any real concerns. Pauline is widowed and moved up here last March to be closer to her children. Talk about a lifestyle change, coming from a 129 acre farm in Mississippi to Waterloo, Iowa! Pauline is rightfully proud of her 6 children, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, give or take a few. Laughing, Pauline said, Too many to count! Her children now know they d better not call on Grandma s bowling night because she won t answer. Pauline did tell me a story that made me realize she really isn t afraid to try anything. In her younger days while living on their farm, she craved a cup of tea one day and not finding anyone who would take her to town to the store, she jumped in one of the many vehicles always found on typical farms and drove herself to town to buy her own box of tea. Never mind the fact that she had never driven a car before - she simply taught herself!!! After hearing the story I understood why this 79 year old wouldn t bat an eyelash at trying something new, such as bowling! Pauline says she will definitely bowl next year! Her average of 55 is steadily climbing and she owns a 198 high series to date and has a high game of 80, earning her a patch for that game. Pauline further stated that when she gets mad, then she bowls better. There s probably more than a few of us who can relate to that. If any of you seniors think you re too old to try something new, just remember Miss Pauline and go for it. Pauline tried it, liked it, and doesn t regret it in the least. Name assn.
