4 President s Page Fellow Members, This month, I am pleased to report that all of the preparatory work associated with the waterproofing of the main clubhouse roof project has been completed. Tender documents have been issued and the resulting submissions considered by the Tender subcommittee who submitted their recommendation to the General Committee. The latter accepted this and the contract was subsequently awarded. Work is expected to commence in mid-august 2014, be undertaken in phases with priority given to the roof area above the Coffee Shop (which will allow that upgrading project to proceed later in the year) and is expected to be completed within three months. The overall cost is HK$1.2M and once the work is completed, our leaky roof problem will be history at least for the next decade! Other development related work continues, particularly in relation to refurbishment of the Coffee Shop. Tender documentation has been issued and at the time of writing, responses from potential contractors are awaited. Current estimates are that site work could commence in September. Members will be kept informed of progress especially, as regards to closure of the Coffee Shop and the alternative catering arrangements. By the time this article is read, improvement work to the lighting in the Sports Hall should have been completed. It is hoped that all sporting users will benefit from the upgrade as well as the occasional social users. The Club s Ground Manager and his team have been busy planning for a number of improvement projects on both the Main Ground and the Lawn Bowls Green. The AstroTurf cricket nets and the centre Astro cricket wicket will be refurbished; safety nets will be erected along our boundary with KBGC; the irrigation pumps and water tanks on the Ground will be replaced and the bore water supply reconnected resulting in substantial financial savings; and additional storage facilities made available on the Ground and Lawn Bowling Greens. Collectively, these projects which have all been recently approved by the General Committee, will cost slightly over HK$1M. From the above, you will see that the General Committee and Management Team are devoting considerable time and effort to upgrading our existing facilities and as mentioned before, the intention is that this should be an ongoing programme. Last but not least, I am delighted to welcome Azeem Ebrahim onto the General Committee having been elected as the new Captain of Cricket at the Cricket Section AGM held on 11 June. Enjoy your Club! Robin Gill 2

5 GM s Column Dear Members, What an awful wet start to summer we have experienced in May and June! The rainfall total in the month of May was an incredible 640mm now, that s a lot of water. The rainfall in May 2013 was 558mm and in May 2012 was 265mm. So you can see that we are receiving more rain each year. While on the topic of rain, now is a good time to remind all Members of the Typhoon and Thunderstorm policy. Typhoon and Thunderstorm policy. Members are advised to follow the instructions from the pool guards in regards to either Typhoon or Thunderstorm warnings. The guards are acting on instructions from me to clear the pool and not allow anyone back into the pool until it s safe to do so. This also applies to the grounds as well. Please remember this is for your own safety. Our current policy is as follows: If Typhoon Signal No. 3 is hoisted during the Club business hours, the Club will close the swimming pool, cricket ground, lawn bowls greens, tennis courts and children s playground for safety reasons and preparations will be made around the Club in the event of a Signal No. 8 being hoisted. If Typhoon Signal No. 8 is hoisted during the Club business hours, the Club will close one hour after the Signal No. 8 is hoisted. The car park will remain open for Members to retrieve their cars. If Typhoon Signal No. 8 is lowered before 1800hrs the Club will reopen with limited service and limited outlets. However, if it is lowered after 1800hrs, the Club will remain closed. If Typhoon Signal No. 8 is lowered between 0700hrs and 1800hrs, the Club will open two hours after Signal No. 8 is lowered and resume with limited operations until normal service can be resumed. When a Black Rainstorm Warning is in force before 0700hrs, the Club will remain closed until the warning is lowered. However, if a Black Rainstorm Warning is in force during normal operating hours, the Club will remain open. The pool, cricket ground, lawn bowls greens, tennis courts and children s playground will be closed. Swimming Pool. The swimming pool is in full operation and ready and waiting for you and your family to come on down for a fun day at the pool. The kickoff Summer Family Pool Party BBQ with the HUGE 13-meter long inflatable Cyber Island will be on Saturday, 5 July from 5pm to 8pm. We anticipate a full attendance for this event so we will plan additional BBQ parties for later in the summer. Stay tuned for the dates in the WOK and posted notices on the usual notice boards. I would like to thank Members who have been using the smaller bath mats in the Men s and Ladies Changing Rooms. These bath mats are well received and are being used, as intended, to stand on outside the shower. We are reducing the costs of laundering the big towels and are of course more sanitary by not using the bath towels on the floor. Also note that the towels are to remain inside the changing rooms at the main clubhouse and inside the pool complex and are not to be brought outside onto the grounds. Please follow the staff s instructions in this regard. Let s hope that July and August are hot and dry which will entice you to come down to the Club and jump into the refreshing water of the pool and you can enjoy our new food menu and summer special drinks as well! Enjoy the summer. Greg Hartigan CCM General Manager Comments are always welcome. Please send to comments@kcc.org 3

6 CRICKET End of Season Report The season started with a great deal of enthusiasm and expectation, given the Club s strong performance the previous season. KCC delivered another excellent season across the board with improvement coming from many of our youngsters, which is an excellent sign for the future. Social T20 The KCC hosted a midweek Social T20 League and it was a great success yet again. This league was established to provide all KCC Members with an opportunity to enjoy a game of cricket in a social and fun environment. Thanks to Afzaal Haider for coordinating this league. Senior Leagues Our senior teams had another outstanding season this year, demonstrating a strong level of competitiveness across all leagues and formats. The Templars had a particularly tough year. After coming off an excellent season in , they started their campaign poorly and were unable to get their season back on track, winning just two games. On the bright side, several youngsters were given the opportunity to play regular Sunday cricket for the first time and hopefully this experience will hold them in good stead in the future. Overall, this squad looked very good on paper and had the ability to finish much higher on the table. Hopefully the season will see them maximise their collective potential. Nigel Shroff led the Infidels this season and what a season it was for the mighty Dels. They won the league title with an undefeated season, Ryan Campbell leading the way with the bat. Congratulations to Nigel and Ryan for completing what can only be described as the perfect season. Saturday Championship Premier League Skippered by Jamie Atkinson, our Premier League team had a superb season winning the T20 title and finishing 2nd in the 50-over format. Unfortunately some washed out fixtures cost us dearly in the 50-over competition. However, as they say, that s cricket! Congratulations to Jamie and Ryan for their tremendous stewardship of this team. To all players that represented the Club at this highest level, well done. Skippered by Hersh Khatri, our U19 Premier League team had a superb, undefeated season. Congratulations on winning the title, boys. Sunday Championship Please follow us at:

7 The KCC fielded 3 teams in Division 1 of the Saturday League competition. Led by Kunal Parwani, the Saracens were defending the title and had yet another terrific season. They won 9 of their 12 games and finished 2nd in the league. It was great to see the fight that they showed throughout the season. All in all, another terrific year for the mighty Saracens. The Tartars had their moments of brilliance throughout the season but overall they would feel slightly disappointed with their season. Led by Farooq Saeed, they finished in 6th place after winning 5 of their 12 games. I am confident that this team can make a better fist of things in and hopefully they can make some progress up the league table. Led by Leigh Stewart, the Crusaders had a much improved season winning 7 of their 12 games and finishing in 5th place on the league table. Had it not been for some extremely close losses in the opening few rounds, they could have challenged the very top teams on the table. There is much to like about this team and I m sure that they ll be looking for further improvement next season. Ladies from strength to strength in the coming seasons. Coaching Ryan Campbell has done a brilliant job again this season as Head Coach. He continues to push the playing group to new levels in both training and match play. His own performance with the bat this season was nothing short of remarkable averaging a whopping 137 in Sunday League cricket. Ryan has been ably assisted by Imran Arif and Usman Manj throughout the season. In addition, there were a number of other Club members who have helped out with coaching during the course of the season. Thank you to everyone who has contributed their coaching services. Our junior programme has continued to go from strength to strength. We have had strong participation numbers, however, there are plans to expand the programme to even greater heights. Development of junior cricket at the KCC is a crucial aspect moving forward as it is the breeding ground of the future. Congratulations to the U11Wasps for being co-winners of the title this season. Great effort, lads. Sponsors Thank you to the Noble Group for being the title sponsor of the Section. Thanks also to the Friendz Club for their generous support as well. Without the assistance of these sponsors the Section would not be able to continue its current operations. The junior programme is a major beneficiary of these funds and we look forward to the continued association with these sponsors in the years to come. Main Ground A big thank you to the KCC s new Grounds Manager, Peter Rasmussen and his ground staff team. Peter has been incredibly enthusiastic since day one, and the condition of the outfield, turf practice wickets and centre wicket areas has been fantastic throughout the season. I d also like to thank Ricky Aitken who periodically assists with key maintenance activities on the ground. Club Management A big thank you to Greg Hartigan and his team for the assistance that has been given to the Cricket Section throughout the season. It really has been a pleasure working with you all. Thanks also to the F&B department for keeping us fed and watered throughout the season. Annual Cricketers Ball The highlight of the social scene for the season was the Annual Cricketers Ball. It was a brilliant night and one of the highlights of the year for me. My thanks go to Nigel Shroff and the Ball committee for putting together a The KCC Maidens had a very good league season. They finished 3rd in the league competition winning 6 of their 10 games. Unfortunately they struggled throughout the T20 competition and finished 5th, with player availability having a major impact. There is a lot of good signs emerging within this playing group and I can see them going 5

8 CRICKET fabulous event. It is essential that all of our players continue to support this and other social events. Committee I have been fortunate to have had a very strong team behind me again this year. A big thanks to Azeem Ebrahim, Erle Perreira, Ravi Lulla and Simon Millington for their support through the year. I d also like to thank Damian Kelleher who is stepping down this year as Chairman of Selectors. This is a very time consuming, difficult and often thankless role and he has carried it out brilliantly. Damian has been on the committee for as long as I can remember and his contribution to KCC cricket has been enormous. So thank you, Damian. Cricket Section AGM 11 June 2014 Cricket Section Committee for were elected as follows: Captain of Cricket Azeem Ebrahim Secretary Kunal Parwani Ladies Representative Allyson Ko Committee Members Simon Millington, Ravi Lulla, Erle Pereira In Closing Given a change in my family circumstances, I will be stepping down from the role of CoC this year. It has been a tremendous honour to have held the post for the past two years and it was a very difficult decision for me to give this position up. However, I am certain that moving forward, the Section will be left in excellent hands. My successor, Azeem Ebrahim, is an ideal candidate to become CoC given his extensive experience as both Secretary of the Cricket and Sporting Convenors sub-committees. Much of the Section/Club s activities are now very policy driven and in my opinion it is essential that any new CoC must have a solid foundation in serving on the Cricket sub-committee and possibly other Club sub-committees. I have tried my very best to keep the Section moving forward during my tenure. We have seen great improvements at the Club over the past 4 or 5 years and I look forward to watching the Section continue to grow and prosper. The future looks very bright indeed. Sincerely, Matt Collins Former Captain of Cricket 6

11 work extremely hard for their wicket, the competitive juices were certainly flowing. At the completion of their innings, the Fathers had amassed a creditable 140. Father-Son Cricket Match 25 May 2014 On Sunday, 25 May KCC held its first ever Father-Son cricket match to end what has been a fantastic year of junior coaching classes. The response was overwhelming with the Fathers assembling a team of 22 and the Juniors assembling a team of 28. To cater for all the numbers we played pairs cricket which saw every pair bat for 2 overs. The Fathers decided to bat first and from the outset they were determined to make the kids In reply the youngsters were in a bit of early trouble but bounced back with a combination of good batting and a little bit of wayward bowling from the Dads. In what became a nail-biting affair, 2 runs were required from the final ball. It was left to Samar Anand, who was batting with his brother Sachit, to hit the final ball for a boundary, which was met by delirious scenes from the kids. A great day was had by all. Special thanks go to all the Mums who also came down to support but also had to look after some very sore husbands the next day. This annual event promises to get bigger and better next year, and I for one will be very much looking forward to the match! Coach Ryan

18 FOOTBALL U15 s Henderson Season Review Sunday, 15 June 2014 will see the U15 Henderson season complete, culminating in a Hong Kong FA Youth Cup final versus Yokohama FC. U15 s Henderson HKFA Elite Cup Qualification The early stages of the season during the pre-christmas schedule allowed the HKFA to filter all the registered teams into appropriate groupings for the league season proper. The first five games of the season were catch up. The finishing position of third, with five wins and two defeats, was a fair reflection of the results earned but was maybe not the true standing given the potential abilities of the team. A healthy goal difference and a healthy point s haul suggested that the team were on a positive journey and improving all the time. The small but settled group learning their roles within the team context and an identity of a playing style slowly becoming evident. With the limited opportunity for experimentation at training, lessons were being absorbed in the competitive game situations, a tough environment to develop a culture. Narrow defeats to the two teams finishing higher in the league standings were compensated by notable performances and subsequent wins at fierce rivals. Third place rendering a league campaign as satisfactory. 16 a collection of undefeated games of varying significance. The occasional double-digit rout against inexperienced opposition was tempered with full throttle skirmishes against some of the countries heavyweights. Five wins of mixed performances ensured safe and successful passage into the top division for the post-christmas league season. U15 s Henderson HKFA Elite Cup League Campaign The Elite Cup was an eight-club league consisting of the top U15 teams from the qualifying group stages, and represented a much tougher and much more balanced challenge. The rather short, seven-game league season left little room for error or little opportunity for U15 s Henderson HKFA Youth Cup With only a small number of competitive teams available to create a viable cup competition, the first round was a round of just 16 teams, victory taking you straight through to a quarterfinal. Even though paired against topflight opposition, the cup draw was favourable and optimism for a successful cup run was well justified. The first round was a comfortable 2-0 win against a stoic Tuen Mun FC team playing for penalties from the kick off. A second half surge and a flurry of goals ensuring that a quarterfinal against the equally pragmatic BC Rangers was sealed. BC Rangers came with little endeavour, rather choosing to stifle our attack and hoping to pinch something on a breakaway, nothing materialised for them. A patient and mature performance, the best performance of the season, again ensured safe passage to the semifinals with a single second half goal ensuring the win. With the Kitchee league result lingering in the memory, the semifinal was always destined to be less one-side and far more of a contest, there would be no repeat of the 5-1 league demolition. However, racing into a two-goal lead was reward for some scything counter-attacking football, but a lead not strong enough to last. A late first half riposte changed the buoyancy of the halftime conversations; 2-1 perhaps not a good enough position given the graft of the first period. More Kitchee pressure

19 in the second half equalised the score, sending the game straight to a penalty shoot-out. Some dramatic misses, some dramatic saves and some dramatic goals after six penalty takers secured a final berth against a very strong Yokohama FC team. The Po Kong Village Road Park is the venue for the 10:30am final and the presentation ceremonies to follow. It will be a grand outcome to finish the season as the HKFA Youth Cup winners, but whichever way the result falls, the season should be remembered as a success, recognised as progress and players should be proud of their achievements. The tournament is forecast to be even bigger next year with the expectation of additional international teams taking part. Overall, the bowling was of a high standard and very competitively fought out in average temperatures of 34 C. All teams played 4 to 5 group games per day. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals were played on day three. KCC entered 21 players. Great team work and individual effort was displayed by all of our 7 teams, who supported each other from start to finish. 25 Convenor s Column The HKLBA annual presentation was held on 29 May This year, our players got many championships in National Competition, Triples League and Premier League. There were 22 KCC players who participated in the event. Men s B Team The Premier League contains nine games for the upper season this year, out of which five away and four home games were scheduled for B. To support the A as well as C, we were not competing as a full team for every game. Apart from the core team members including Andrew Robertson, Cliff Imeson, David Leung, Derek Lee, James Keung, Joseph Chu, T H Kam, Kenny Ng, K K Yeung, Mike Pryce, Sebastian Cheung and Li Ying Wing, other members also rendered great assistance to B for substitutions. They were Alex Sheck who offered the most by participating almost half the number of matches this season, Kenny Sou and Ken Fong. Despite not having the full line-up, our teammates played every game with high team spirit. B Team Captain Ladies A Team Premier League Team members: Anna, Daphne, Candy, Elizabeth, Flora, Lily, Maggie, Mercredi, Michelle, Pari, Rhondi, Sanie, Sonia and Stella. I am delighted to report that after playing 6 games, we are currently on top of the 1st Division league table. The A Team started the Premier League with a 5-3 win against SBSC A at ALC. The 2nd and 3rd game was called off due to inclement weather. Both games was rescheduled to play after the 4th game. Our home green was closed for nearly 2 weeks, which led to a 2-6 down result on our first game played at home. We won 6-2 vs. CCC A and 8-0 vs. HKPBC A on the rescheduled match. The 5th game was a 6-2 win vs. ILBC A away on carpet and another 6-2 win at home vs. FC A. Well done, girls! National Competitions National Singles Elizabeth, Mercredi and Stella going strong onto the 5th round. Keep it going! HK Squad We have two ladies from KCC Mercredi and myself. Congratulations! Elizabeth A Team Captain Ladies B Team It is sad to say that the Ladies B is not in a very good position now. We played 7 games so far won 3, lost 3, tie 1. Due to the unfavourable condition of the top green, we did not have much chances for practicing on our designated rinks and our 3 home games were played on different rinks, which definitely made us lose the home green advantage. We have one more home game next week and hope the green condition will be better for our second half game. Annie Yeung B Team Captain 23

26 Unbeaten Double Champions! SQUASH KCC 3 captured double champions in season. Our team consists of Hong Kong Squash legend Rebecca Chui, rising stars in women squash Eunice Tong and Lee Ka Yi, talented young player Kenny Chu, and promising and experienced players Anthony Lau, Gerald Kwok and Chan Shing Fung. Our team has remained in the top position since the first round. With incredible team spirit and superb morale, we won all 18 matches throughout the season and captured the league title, 22 points ahead of the first runners-up HK Football Club 3. KCC 3 overwhelmed the old rival HK Football Club 3 again by beating them twice by 4-1 in the first round as well as in the final of playoff and seized the playoff champion. Chan Shing Fung Convenor, KCC 3 KCC Ladies Retain the HKFC International 3s Title Our ladies team continue to dominate major local tournaments. In the Hong Kong Football Club International 3s tournament, our ladies team, the defending champions and ably led by Eunice Tong, beat HKFC ladies 3-0 to win the title for a second consecutive year. Our men s team led by Leo Au also did very well to reach the Men s final, losing 1-2 to Pro Star Champion. Well done, boys and girls. Aaron 24

27 Interclub Squash the day. Thanks to Evan Fowler and Aaron Yip for helping with organising the food and arrangements for dinner (and for putting up with my constant ing in the early hours of the morning!). To all those who helped referee, thank you for making my day that much easier and stress-free. Finally, a special thanks must be given to guest cameraman for the day, Andrew Whitmarsh, who managed to capture all the action from start to finish. Another successful social interclub squash event was held on 7 June. This year, it was our turn to host 21 HKCC players and to give our brand new courts a good run around. Players from both sides put on a great display of squash throughout the afternoon and were rewarded with a feast at the end of a tiring day on court. The afternoon ended with an exhibition match between former HK number one champion, Dick Lau and one of our up-and-coming stars, Hugo Ho. The match was extremely tight and thrilling as after about 20 minutes of insane match play, the score was tied at 2-2 a fifth and final game had to be played, despite both players looking absolutely exhausted. However in the end, it was Dick who managed to claim victory and walked away with a 3-2 win. After all scorecards had been collected and counted, the KCC emerged victorious for a second year in a row with a convincing 14-7 win. Nonetheless, our guests gave each and every match their all and pushed each and every one of us to our limits. As always, it is encouraging to see players of all ages and abilities turn up for these events as new friendships, as well as exchanging of squash tips and playing styles, are made and shared. While we won overall, the score didn t matter as much as making sure everyone had a good time and enjoyed the afternoon. Thanks must be given to the HKCC and their organiser, Simon Davies, for being such great opponents and to those from the Section for participating on Our next social match is scheduled for 30 August and is to be played at the HKFC. If you are interested in participating, sign-up sheets can be found at the squash courts. Looking forward to seeing you all for another fun and action packed day of squash! Kat Labrum 25 25

28 TENNIS Interclub Tennis competition 17 May 2014 at Hong Kong Football Club The KCC Tennis Section was invited to take part, for the third straight year, in the Interclub Tennis Tournament on 17 May This social Interclub tennis competition was started by HKFC. It has, come to be regarded as one of the most popular social activities in the tennis events calendar, growing in size in both the number of players and participating Clubs. This year four teams took part. They were Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC), Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC), Clearwater Bay Club (CWBC) and Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC). The KCC tennis team was represented by Michael Buhre, Mahmood Rumjahn, Anthony Ho, Peter Leung, Cf Fung, Anthony Yu, Sandra Scanlon, Joe Reed, Anna Palfrey, Cathy Erwin, Phoebe Wong and Jesse Panjabi. The players were in a boisterous mood on board the bus taking us to HKFC. We arrived well ahead of the start time and players started their warm-ups. In the first round, KCC was pitched against the CWB team. KCC edged out CWB by the narrowest margin of points with Michael/Mahmood, CF/Anthony and Joe/Phoebe, securing our first win. Spirits soared sky-high. In the second round, KCC played against the HKCC team. Matches were evenly contested with both sides trying every trick they have learned to outplay and outsmart their opponents. Overall, the KCC pairs played decidedly better than the opposition. In particular, CF/Anthony YU match was a heart-wrenching game for their respective Club supporters to watch. KCC was unable to seal up the game when it mattered. But the tide turned quickly. In the deciding point, Anthony Yu was given a simple task to put away an overhead floater and come out victorious. Instead, Anthony Yu smashed the ball out, losing both the point and the match. By the time we finished our matches with HKFC, we knew the silverware had slipped out of our grasp. The HKFC were just too strong, beating us in all the matches played except the mixed doubles of Anthony/Sandra. After the exciting games, we all had a good time with good food, unlimited supply of wines, amidst a friendly atmosphere providing us tennis freaks a chance to renew old friendships. On the way back, I distinctively heard the sound of snoring. Just before I drifted off with my dreams I also heard voices in my head talking privately when can we organise the Interclub tournament at KCC? 29 KCC Wimbledon Fun Day 1 June 2014 The Wimbledon was held on 1 June 2014 on a sunny humid day. This year the weather was somewhat different as all games were played on schedule and uninterrupted by rain throughout the day. The number of participants taking part was overwhelming and formed all grades in the A/A+, B C & D, Social as well as the junior teams. On the whole, the Wimbledon day was a success as you can see from the photos the players played their heart out and after the event, all players and Club Members helped to celebrate the event by drinking and eating their heart out. While winners took away the gifts/trophies, those who were not so lucky took away many friendships and sweet memories and hope that they will try again next year. Harry Yuen Special thanks to: 27

32 GOLF Golden Bay Adventure On Wednesday, 18 June 16 adventurous golfers converged on Huangang border crossing at the start of a trip to a new venue at Golden Bay Golf Club. This trip entailed a four-hour road journey from Huangang and would take us far beyond our usual one hour from the border venues. There was little information on their website and so we were keen to see the area, courses and facilities for ourselves. The four-hour journey proved to be reasonably accurate but a long stretch of roadworks added a further 30 minutes to their estimate. It was an interesting journey as we passed lots of small villages and new developments and passed through a very hilly area where wind farms seem to be sprouting up on every ridge and mountain top. The restaurant was a good choice and we were able to try a number of local special dishes as well as some regular favourites but the gooseliver stole the show and resulted in the call for an encore, which melted in the mouth just as easily as the first sample. The meal was washed down with an ample supply of Tsingtao and we then moved on to the selected massage venue for a foot massage which seemed to include head, shoulders, back and lower leg in addition. At RMB60 for an 80 minutes massage it was very good and excellent value. We had an early start on the Thursday for the league event and we were blessed with excellent weather, sunny but with reasonable cloud cover and a light breeze. On arrival it was time for a quick change and onto the course for a social round on the AB course. They had experienced thunderstorms and very heavy rain non-stop for two days at the beginning of the week and although the fairways had drained reasonably well many of the bunkers were now ponds and one area between two pond bunkers was a lake. This necessitated the adoption of the GUR ruling in these modified areas. The round went well and most of the players seemed happy with the layout of the course, especially Vincent who birdied two of the holes. This social round enabled us to acquaint ourselves with the details of the course before our Stableford League round the following morning. After the round, it was time for a quick beer and shower before heading off to Shantou on the coach to be led to a restaurant and a massage venue by our driver. The par 3s on the A course proved elusive with no one managing to get on and stay on the greens while on the B course Zaki on B3 and Suresh on B6 had excellent tee shots to win the nearest the pins. Results Nearest the Pin: A3: AN Other A7: AN Other B3: Zaki Dad B6: Suresh Gopisetty Stableford: 1st: Richard Tinlin 2nd: CM Mak 3rd: Tommy Tam 33pts 31pts 28pts In the Stableford League Richard managed to salvage his round after a slow start with a back 9 of 20pts for a total of 33pts just beating CM who had 31pts. In the Stableford League Richard retained top spot with 166pts with Zaki moving into 2nd 30

33 Coming Events spot on 157pts with David Brettell in 3rd place on 154pts just ahead of Vincent Lee and Gary Sharma who are both on 150pts, but there are still 4 events to go and a number of players have good chances of catching the front-runners. We have treats in store in the coming months with a visit to Chung Shan Hot Springs to play the Arnold Palmer course on Monday, 14 July; this is the oldest Club in China and is the only club in the country where both Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus have designed courses. We have previously played the Nicklaus course on Society trips but the Palmer course was recently changed from a walking course to an optional walking or buggy course and is our first Society trip to play Palmer, which was the first course in China; it opened in 1984 and requires precise shot making, should be a great trip. On Monday, 18 August we will be returning to play the Faldo course at Mission Hills. This is usually a very popular destination and should attract a good crowd to enjoy the tests set by Sir Nick. In September we will be returning to Shunde to enjoy this excellent course and its wonderful hospitality and catering along with its fabulous value for those of us at or over the age of 50. This is a two-day trip on Wednesday, 24 and Thursday, 25 September. Keep those dates free in your diary and you will be able to enjoy some great venues at reasonable costs. Hope you can make it. Cheers, Richard 31

38 Snooker Update SNOOKER Hong Kong Country Club vs. Kowloon Cricket Club On 3 June, we paid a visit to the Hong Kong Country Club for a friendly. We played 7 singles and 2 doubles. CJ Panjabi, Tommy Tam, John Greene, Francis Hung, Don McNeil, Adrian Townson and Navin Ahuja formed our side. Before dinner, we were up 4-3 in the singles. It was great to have Adrian Townson join us. He went against the opponent s toughest player. No one had ever seen Adrian in the snooker room nor watched him play. A strong potter, with some good safety skills and Adrian won! After dinner (some delicious food), we won both the doubles. They plan to visit us in July for a re-match. Internal Competitions The internal competitions have begun. Please check the sheets posted in the snooker room and arrange to play your match accordingly. Navin Snooker Convenor 36

43 CanSurvive Workshop Natural Ways of Healing Our Body 11 June 2014 Hong Kong Medical Association Squash Tournament 25 May 2014 Monday June 30 th 2014 Re: Peak School Aquathon Training Dear Mr. Kings Chan and the General Committee, Our school decided earlier this year to enter for the first time the Annual ESF Aquathon Challenge which was to be held at King George V School. Nineteen students between Years 4 and 6 tried out and had the privilege of training in your pool and running around the cricket oval. These dedicated and very motivated athletes trained twice a week through May and the early part of June improving their technique and times from session to session in preparation for the race. Owing to the opportunities given to us to train at the KCC our students arrived at the event well trained and eager to demonstrate how much they had improved. Of the 32 teams participating, the Peak School placed 14 th and 24 th, with almost every child recording personal best times on the day. I would like to thank the General Committee for giving our school the chance to train and thus be a part of the ESF Aquathon Challenge. All the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves with some deciding to take up the sport and participate in other Aquathons around Hong Kong. Our parents would like to also pass on their thanks for the opportunity you have provided for their child. Sincerely, Bill Garnett Peak School Principal 41
