We are thrilled to host the 2015 South Atlantic Regional and Non-Qualifying Championships for the first time in 15 years! The Non-Qualifying portion of the competitions will be held at The Cooler on September and Qualifying on October 5-8. Please extend a warm welcome to all of our competitors and families, coaches, fans, and officials. A special welcome to our Non-Qualifying Chief Referee, Bonnie Boaz, from Port St. Lucie, FL, Chief Accountant, Michael Rowland, from Raleigh, NC, Chief Announcer, John Richardson, from Atlanta, GA, and Music Technician, Doug Scott from Durham, NC. We will be particularly challenged to recruit enough volunteers for these two events, especially for the Qualifying competition, beginning with practice ice on Saturday, October 4 through the last events on Wednesday, October 8. This year, Volunteer Chair, Jan Brown, will be using Sign Up Genie to solicit your help. PLEASE BE GENEROUS WITH YOUR TIME AND TALENT! Many new areas that are required by U.S. Figure Skating must be filled by volunteers, including security and medical. All-Event tickets for the Qualifying events may be purchased at the registration desk for $35 or individual day tickets for $12. Volunteers will not be permitted in the rinks without a ticket unless your position requires entry. We welcome any sponsors, both business and individual. Your Board of Directors is anticipating and planning a skating year to remember. Our events were approved at the August Board meeting. In fulfilling our mission of promoting skating in all forms, this year s events include the following: four competitions (the 2015 South Atlantic Non-Qualifying and Qualifying Regionals, the Magnolia Open and the Atlanta Open); the Spring Show; and the Annual Ice Dance Weekend plus our Club Ice with Graham and Eric and off-ice with Kathy and Nancy. By offering these opportunities for our skaters to compete and perform, we strive to provide venues to set goals, to showcase learned skills, and to simply feel the joy of skating, of the glide, of the combination of athleticism and artistry. With all of these events comes the need for volunteers. The six hour minimum volunteer requirement is what we hope will introduce new volunteers to our Club and to also act as an incentive for further volunteering, for sharing in the nurturing of our skaters and the fellowship within our skating family. There is much to be done, many wonderful experiences to be had. Stay calm, enjoy the journey with your skating family, and please volunteer. Every helping hand, big or small, is so welcomed and appreciated! Looking forward to a great skating year, Dolensky to Compete at Autumn Classic Congratulations and good luck to Senior Men competitor Tim Dolensky who has once again been named to U.S. Figure Skating s International Selection Pool. 5 SPOTLIGHT SKATER Emily Moosbrugger What are your favorite and least favorite elements? My favorite jump is the double Lutz. My least favorite jump is the double toe because I struggle with the landing. Competitive accomplishments I skated clean and placed first at the John Smith Memorial Competition in Charlotte, NC against a large, competitive group. Favorite program My current program is my favorite. I m skating to Vuelie from the movie Frozen. I love the music especially the vocals. It s the first music that I really feel I ve connected with. Whom do you admire most? My coaches, Debbie and Pam - without them, I would not only be the skater, but the person I am today. The have always believed in me and supported me both on and off the ice. What is the most memorable event of your skating career? What are your future skating and educational goals? My favorite things are Mint chocolate chip ice cream, YouTube, and SKATING, of course! If I weren t a skater, I would have been The most memorable event of my skating career was when I performed my solo for the Canvas on Ice show this past spring and made my coach, Mrs. Debbie, cry! I want to do well at Regionals this year because it s on our home ice! I d like to land my double Axel in the next year and pass my senior moves before I graduate. I plan on going to college and hope to find a program where I can continue to compete. I will somehow always keep skating in my life, no matter what! A competitive cheerleader that s what all my friends do. Tell us something about yourself or your family that no one knows. My elbows are double-jointed! I can rotate my hand and arm 360 degrees! It looks weird. Will I find a career in skating on or off the ice??? Who is your favorite skater? My favorite skater is Ashley Wagner because she has such a great work ethic and refuses to give up even after a rough skate. Tell us about your school and extracurricular activities. I am a 10th grader at Walton High School. My favorite subject is Spanish. I am a board member for Rachel s Challenge Club and participate in chorus. Besides performing random acts of kindness through Rachel s Challenge, I volunteer with pre-school and school-age programs for children with cancer through Camp Sunshine. Tell us about your family. I have a 12-year-old brother, Alex. We re very close and drive our parents insane! Besides skating, I m really into photography. I love to take and edit pictures with my friends. Best advice you have ever received? If you re not falling, you re not learning. Never be afraid to fall. What famous person would you most like to meet? E M I L Y One Direction because they are my absolute favorite band! My family is most like the television show Jeopardy! because we think we have all the answers to any question. 5
