Purpose of this document This aim of this document is to explain the process of importing Gerber, digitizing it and then merging it with a BOM with the ultimate goal of producing a GenCAD file.

4 Purpose of this document This aim of this document is to explain the process of importing Gerber, digitizing it and then merging it with a BOM with the ultimate goal of producing a GenCAD file. Source Data Image data The image data for this project was supplied to Aegis by Pemtron in the file named Gerber Stencil & Pad.rar. This file contained the following files containing Gerber image data: M gbr art001.pho art002.pho dd pho sm pho sst pho BOM data As no BOM data was supplied by Pemtron Aegis created the following simple comma separated text file: Reference Designator, Part Number, Quantity BGA324, B d, 1 TSOP24, TSOP24-002v4, 1 Importing the Gerber information This tutorial assumes a stand-alone installation of CircuitCAM (v ). Open a new project and select the Import Gerber Files option from the main menu: You will be presented with the Gerber Import window with an Add Layers button toward the top right. Click this button and use the File Open dialog to navigate and select the M gbr file. Press OK. Now do the same for sm pho and sst pho. These three files are what I determined I needed to digitize this board. You should now have the three files listed in the Gerber Import window: page 3

5 Before clicking the OK button it is important that we first identify a layer as being digitizable. This layer will be the one that the digitizing tool will use to render intelligent features, the process of which will be explained below. For the sample data provided I chose the M gbr layer. page 4

To make the M6012028.gbr layer digitizable: First select the M6012028.gbr layer entry in the list, and then select the Properties button.

Manipulating the imported Gerber When we first import these Gerber layers we notice that the brown layer does not align with the black and white layers and that the brown layer is also flipped. page 5

7 First we shall flip the brown layer. Select the brown layer in the list of layers on the left side of the main window (note the blue highlight around the checkbox): To keep the display clean I have temporarily hidden the black layer. This is done by removing the check mark against this layer in the layer list, as shown to the left. Ensuring the brown layer is highlighted, right mouse click the background and select "Flip Active Layer": Now we need to align the layers. Select the "Align Layers (Select Source Feature)" button page 6

Now select a feature (component) in the brown layer and draw a rectangle around it using the mouse: Start with the mouse slightly above and to the left of this feature.

Now let the mouse button go which will result in the feature being highlighted as shown in the image on the left.

Then depress the left mouse button, and while holding this mouse button down, drag the cursor slightly to the right and below this feature. Now let the mouse button go which will result in the feature being highlighted as shown in the image on the left. Notice that the selected button has been automatically changed to Align Layers (Select Target Feature)". Now select the white layer in the layer list and then use the mouse to select the corresponding feature in the white layer. When you release the mouse button the screen will look as follows: Press the Yes button to proceed with the alignment operation. You will now see the two layers aligned as shown below: page 7

9 Now turn the black layer back on, by checking the checkbox for that layer in the layer list. When digitizing the Gerber and we have a panelized board (multi-up board) only digitize one image. I am going to use the bottom left image for this tutorial: Digitizing components To do this, first zoom into the area of interest: page 8

First I am going to digitize the component identified on this board as "BGA-324(0.8)".

10 Select the "Add Features" button: You now ready to identify a component, or more precisely, the pads that grouped together will be used as landing pads for one component. First I am going to digitize the component identified on this board as "BGA-324(0.8)". Using the mouse to draw a selection rectangle I "select the whole component" to which the result is as follows: page 9

11 AEGIS Version 7 Documentation You will notice that only the outside pads have been selected. Before we digitize this component we must ensure that every pad for the component is highlighted. Draw another selection rectangle, this time inside the starting at A and ending at B. This results in the following pads being selected: We keep highlighting pads within this feature until the whole feature is highlighted: Now that we have the whole feature highlighted, right mouse click on the component and the following dialog will appear: page 10

For this example, enter a reference designator value, BGA324 and press the Accept button.

12 Auto-Scan would look for similar components on the same board (please note that the software is unaware that multiple images may be present as we imported data for a panel at this stage). For this example, enter a reference designator value, BGA324 and press the Accept button. You will see the image change to: Moreover, if you switch to the Universal Viewing Mode you will see that we have one feature identified. page 11

13 Switch back to the Gerber Viewing Mode: Now we will digitize another component - "TSOP-24". Highlight the component pads as before: Right mouse click, set the reference to "TSOP24" and press Accept. page 12

14 Now when we look in the Universal Viewer we see: For this example we are only going to digitize these two components. Importing the BOM When all the features from the Gerber information have been digitized we need to import the BOM so as to add part number information to each component reference. To do this, select the Import BOM option in the BOM menu: This will cause the BOM Import dialog to be displayed: page 13

Use the button to the right of the BOM Filename textbox to navigate to and identify the file containing the comma separated BOM data as described at the beginning of this document.

When the information has been read from the file we need, in this case, to let the importer know that the data is comma separated. We do this by selecting the Delimited Text radio button and identifying the delimiter as a comma: page 14

16 Before we can import this BOM we need to tell the importer what each column represents. To do this click the mouse on a column header (where it currently is labeled Unused : From this list select the property that the data in this column represents, in this case Reference. Do this for each column containing data you wish to import. Note that in this example we can only import Reference and Part Number; there is no import of Quantity: page 15

The importer will now attempt to assign a part number to each reference designator on the board using this information just imported.

17 Now that we have mapped the information in the file to their corresponding CircuitCAM properties we are ready to import the information. Click the Import button, bottom left of the BOM Import dialog, and then the OK button. The importer will now attempt to assign a part number to each reference designator on the board using this information just imported. In the Universal Viewer, right click a component and select the Edit Location Info option. This will result in the following dialog being displayed. Here we can see that the location now not only has a reference designator assigned to it, but it also has a part number. Go through each component in the list and verify that each has a part number assigned. Now click on the BOM tab here you will see the imported BOM, which in this case included the column titles because these were present in the imported file. To remove these from our BOM simply highlight the entry in the list and press the Delete P/N button: page 16
