6 KIDS FISHING DAY Our first Kids Fishing Day at Dr. Stu Cohn s pond took place on April 25, Nine kids and three counselors from the Hendersonville Boys and Girls Club showed up. The weather was co-operative. We had plenty of sunshine, unlike past years when we encountered some rain to dampen things up. The fishing was fairly brisk early in the morning, and as the day warmed up, the fishing slowed down some. All in all we had a good day, about 60 trout were caught, a few in the 3-4 lb class. The champion fisherkid was a girl (named C.C.) who has never gone fishing before, caught 17 trout. You could hear her hollering and screaming with joy when she caught her first trout. As a matter of fact, I don t think she stopped hollering when she caught all those fish. Guess who she had for her mentor? Yep - Joe Moore, the pro. It was really good to see the kids catching fish and having fun. Each had a nice bag of trout to take home for dinner. I know our TU members assisting them had just as much fun. For lunch, hot dogs with all the trimmings and chilli were prepared and served by Scott Schaffer and Stu. Many thanks to the following members who volunteered to help: Frank Forrester; Norris McDowell; Larry Walp; Yoshi Kinoshita; Scott Schaffer; Brian Shafffer; Al Rogers; Joe Moore; Mike Hansworth; Dale Klug and Chris Ellis. Of course, the above event would not be possible if not for the generosity and kindness of Dr. Cohn who enjoy giving these kids a chance at this sport which we all enjoy and love so much. Thank you, Stu. Our next KFD is scheduled for May 9. We will be hosting about 12 kids with special needs from Faith Link in Hendersonville. We still need two more volunteers to help out. If interested, please write (wysman51@windstream.net) or call me at Thank you. Wai Syn KFD coordinater Snags & Snarls 6

8 The History of Snags & Snarls - The early years ( ) James Hoskinson, editor Snags & Snarls As Linda pointed out in the April persident s report we have located chapter files as far back as Below is a portion of Snags & Snarls Issue #1. On page 8 is some of what appears to be Issue 2 You will note that this is Volume I, Number I of Snags & Snarls. Cherish it. It may become very valuable as a collector s item because it may very well be the last edition as well. By the time we pay the printer and mailing costs we ll have just enough money left to file for bankruptcy. However, there are some things that need to be said relative to problems and conditions which affect present and future trout fishing in the mountains of Western North Carolina. For benefit of new and prospective members of Trout Unlimited, the Pisgah Chapter is set up to serve members of Polk, Henderson, and Transylvania counties. Meetings are normally held in Hendersonville, being most centrally located and affording excellent meeting accomodations. Frequency of meetings is dictated by the urgency of matters to be dealt with--hopefully, often enough to sustain interest but not so often as to become a burden. A proposed up-coming event for the whole chapter membership, is the late-summer clean up of trash from the heavily used and sadly abused Davidson River in Pisgah Forest. If you missed our last meeting (March 18) you missed a dilly! Three of our top fishermen, Dwight and Don Howell and Renard Pelletier agreed to serve as a panel to field questions on their choices of trout waters, flies and techniques to use at different seasons and stream conditions. Fifteen guests shared in the feast and were as conscious as the rest of us that we had really struck pay dirt. NEXT MEETING Monday, April 15, 7:30 PM, Meadows Community Center, 3rd Ave. & Justice St., Hendersonville Speaker: Dr. Thomas J. Harshbarger of the USDA Forest Service in Asheville. The author did not identify himself (Wally Lockwood?) The first newsletter was 5 pages including many Committee Reports. A complete roster showing 24 members including Dr. Joseph Carpenter: Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Don Howell: Treasurer, Dwight Howell : Membership & Publicity. Snags & Snarls 8

9 Volume II March, 1975 Number I As you impatiently wait the opening of trout season ( sunrise, April 5 ) we hope to remind you to count your blessings for the hundreds and hundreds of miles of prime trout waters in Western North Carolina. Only through such appreciation are you conscious of need to work for their preservation. North Carolina is unique in all the southeastern states for its abundance of yet unspoiled trout habitat. its greatest hazard is being taken for granted. This appears to be the second issue of Snags & Snarls. It was 2 pages long, listing the officers and the upcoming March meeting featuring Dr. Thomas J. Harshbarger. Snags & Snarls appears to have disappeared over the next few years - replaced by reports from the chapter secretary. Below I have re-typed one such report. TROUT UNLIMITED -- PISGAH CHAPTER A regular meeting was held at 7:30 PM, February 15, 1978, in the community room of the First Federal Savings & Loan, Hendersonville, N.C. President Bob Scruggs called the meeting to order and welcomed the fourteen members and guests. Treasurer Ethan Baker reported a balance of $ in the bank. No other committee reports were given at this time. Ed Rinker, chairman of our fly fishing school, gave us a report on the upcoming event. It is to be held at two different locations on seperate weekends. The first school will be held on March 18, 1978, in Tryon, N.C. and the cost will be $5.00/person and the hours will be 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Announcements will be made in all local newspapers and on all local radio stations. Al Rogers of our chapter will be teaching a class in fly-tying at Blue Ridge Tech. in Hendersonville during the spring quarter. The classes will begin will begin April 4, Due to inclimate weather and personal illness our two scheduled speakers were unable to attend. Our meeting was adjourned and a social followed. Larry D. Campbell Secretary Al Rogers, of course, remains an active member today. Robert Scruggs continues to be member of the chapter and receives a newsletter every month. Snags & Snarls 9

13 On April 1st we had our second Green River Stocking of 2009.I was amazed by the large turn out because the weather report called for rain for most of the morning.but by 9:30am the rain broke and 15 of our faithful stockers started showing up.besides a break in the weather Mike Dennis brought some of the largest muffins I ve ever seen and I brought the coffee.so,besides talking to help pass the time away until the hatchery truck arrived we also had muffins and coffee to help.so a big thank you to Mike Dennis.Following are the names that helped stock: Mike Dennis, John Barsotti, Mike Hanesworth,.John Sponner, Bob Daubert, John Blackman, David Maxwell, Wai Syn, Chris Comer, Sogi Soder, Al Rogers, Lou Barlow, Dave Bender, Buddy Kimura, and Ross Fox Little River Stocking April 3, 2009 What a difference a month makes! The Little River was in her full glory with an abundance of water going over the falls. In fact, the spray from High Falls could be felt at the pavilion. I can t remember this much water in the Little River except for a time in the fall of 2004 after hurricanes Francis, Jeannie and Ivan visited this part of North Carolina in September. However, John Murry the Pisgah Fish Hatchery states that we already are behind last year s rainfall at this time. Lets all hope that we get more rain so that we can see the end of this prolonged drought. We had a great turn out for the April 3 stocking and everybody enjoyed viewing the beauty of DuPont State Forest. The following individuals were present during the stocking: Eric Folk, DuPont State Forest Ranger; Bill Bartles, Pisgah Hatchery; and John Kocinski, Irv Lanquist, Bill Wearmouth, Steve Herring, Ken Voltz, Frank Forrester, Peter Greko, Jack Soyak, and our newest volunteer Don Lingard.
