May Chapter Meeting Program - Casting Carolinas F or many years the Pisgah Chapter has provided support to the non-profits Casting for Recovery and now Casting Carolinas as part of our Outreach mission. Casting Carolinas simply does great work using the experiences of fly fishing to provide positive life changing energy to women recovering from cancer. As we know, passion for fly fishing breeds passion for coldwater conservation, and no doubt Casting Carolinas instills that passion to its participants. Visit their website to learn Presenting the program at our Chapter meeting will be Starr Nolan. Starr is the Executive Director of Casting Carolinas and was the Program Coordinator for Casting for Recovery for 13 years, working as the Regional Program Director for CfR for 4 years. Starr holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of NC at Chapel Hill and has been in private psychotherapy practice in Asheville since She was President of the Land O Sky Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Asheville for 4 years and also served on that non-profit s Board. Starr owns and operates Brookside Guides, a fly fishing guide service, which has operated in Asheville for 15 years. She has taught hundreds of new anglers how to fly fish. In her spare time Starr enjoys playing fiddle in her band, All Strings Considered. May Chapter Meeting is Thursday, May 6:45 p.m.! SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 3

PISGAH CHAPTER TU ANNUAL FLY FISHING SCHOOL recap By Lou Barlow, Photos by ed shearin O n Saturday, April 23 rd, twenty students attended this year s fly fishing school to learn basics of fly fishing. The students rotated between four stations that included instruction concerning equipment, casting, lines, leaders, knots, fly tying, river tactics, river designations, insects, and fly presentation-everything that a beginner would need to get in the water and catch a trout! Class of 2016 Dave Bender leads Knots and Line Management Steve Fromholtz covers Fly Fishing Equipment Mark Byington instructs student in Casting SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 4

PISGAH CHAPTER TU ANNUAL FLY FISHING SCHOOL Continued... Each student was assigned a mentor that, in the near future, will fish for a half day with the student to use the new information learned from the school! Thirty of our chapter members were involved in the planning, preparation, and instruction for the day! More pictures of the event can be viewed at: Dear Fly Fishing School Volunteers Many Thanks to Lou Barlow for coordinating this year s school! A job WELL DONE!!! editor I want to sincerely thank you for volunteering to make this year s fly fishing school an outstanding event! Some of you worked behind the scenes to secure the location, order the food, and advertise the event. Others were instructors and/or mentors. Twenty-Eight of our chapter members volunteered to work in some capacity in this year s school and everyone s performance was first class! The fishing school takes the whole family to make it the exemplary event that it has become over many years. Please except my thanks for a job well done! I will see you on the river! Sincerely Lou SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 6

Gurdle Bug aka Rubber Leg Stonefly by Dave Bender Materials List: Thread: 0/6, color to match Hook: Size xl Tail, Antenna and Legs: Body: Variegated Chenille Weight: 020 Lead Wire As you can see, this is a rather short list of materials and is a fairly easy fly to tie once you learn how to deal with the rubber legs. In photo #11 you'll note that I have pulled all the legs forward and made two loose wraps to hold them in place which makes wrapping the chenille a bit easier until you reach the first set of legs. Once I reach that point I release the legs and go from there. Step 1: De-barb hook and place in vise. SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 7

Gurdle Bug Continued... Step 2: Start by placing 12 to 15 wraps of lead wire on the hook shank in tight wraps and clip any excess. I use nail clippers to cut all wire including lead. Photos #2 and #3 Photo # 2 Photo # 3 Step 3: Start you thread behind the hook eye and wind back to where the lead starts but do not clip tag end of your thread as in photo #4. Pull the thread, tag end, back over the lead and spiral to just behind the wire wraps and clip the tag as per photo #5. Photo # 4 Photo # 5 SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 8

Gurdle Bug Continued... Step 4: Now wrap thread back and forth over the wire several times locking in the wire. Build thread tapers at both end of the wire ending with your wire and the back of the hook and per photo #6. Step 5: Clip an appropriate length, don't skimp, of rubber leg material and tie in at the start of the bend. Make sure the tails are splayed out and pointing back as per photo #7. Photo # 6 Photo # 7 SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 9

Gurdle Bug Continued... Step 6: Tie in a section of chenille at this point and advance your thread to just past the halfway point of the hook shank as per photo #8. Step 7: Tie in a set of rubber legs at this point, one sticking out each side and slanted slightly to the rear. This may take a bit of maneuvering. Use on piece of material and figure 8 across the top to secure. See photo #9. Photo # 8 Photo # 9 Step 8: Now repeat this two more times allowing space between each set of legs as per photo #10. Step 9: Pull all the legs forward and make two or three loose turns to hold them in place, photo #11. Photo # 10 Photo # 11 SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 10

Gurdle Bug Continued... Step 10: Grasp the chenille and wrap forward to the first set of legs. Now is the time to release the legs from behind the hook eye. Continue forward with the chenille maneuvering between the leg sets and stop behind the eye. Make several secure wraps. Clip the chenille and add a section of rubber leg material to form the antenna as per photo #12. Step 11: Whip finish at the antenna tie in point, clip your thread and cut the tail, antenna and legs to length. I generally pull all six legs up and clip all and once. This makes for more uniform legs. Step 12: A dab of head cement and that's it... Photo # 12 This makes for a great lead fly with a soft hackle or nymph of your choice trailing at 16 to 18 inches behind. It generally has enough weight which can be adjusted at time of tying, to get it down without adding split shot. It can also be tied in any number of colors. Black with white rubber legs works great for stocked trout. My all-around favorites are olive/black or mocha/black variegated. SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 11

On with the Show this is it! O ne of the Tasks defined in the latest Strategic Plan for the Pisgah Chapter towards the stated Goal Improve upon and expand our public relations efforts, was to Establish speaker programs for presentations at area civic clubs. Never to be a Chapter, to rest on its laurels, we promptly created a stock presentation about the Pisgah Chapter and have been hitting the road with our fish show since last summer. So far we have been livening up the podiums for four local civic organizations (Rotary Clubs of Hendersonville, Brevard, and Pisgah Forest, as well as the University Club of Hendersonville), and have not been thrown off the stage once. The minute Powerpoint presentation was created to illustrate to the public, the mission and vision of Trout Unlimited and our Chapter. We make sure to highlight the many, many programs our volunteers are engaged in throughout the year in coldwater conservation projects, education, and outreach. We also point to the fun we have doing the things we do! If you have any ideas about potential speaking engagements, let Mike or one of the other Chapter leaders know. Skip Sheldon and Mark Byington treading the boards. SNAGS & SNARLS May 2016 Page 12

The Editing Remains What will we do as the wisdom of our past bears down on our future? It is a story of ageless conversation, not only conversation held with the land our contemplation and wonder at a prairie thunderstorm, or before the jagged line of a young mountain, or at the sudden rise of ducks from an isolated lake. We have been telling ourselves the story of what we represent in the land for 40,000 years. At the heart of this story, I think, is a simple, abiding belief: it is possible to live wisely on the land, and to live well. And in behaving respectfully toward all that the land contains, it is possible to imagine a stifling ignorance falling away from us. Barry Lopez Excerpt of the Preface to Arctic Dreams "The solution to any problem -- work, love, money, whatever - - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be."
