A Word From The Publisher September is upon us. I am looking forward to cooler weather. I don t know about you, but I have had enough triple digit heat, especially on shoot days! Hunting season is coming and there will be less Skeet shoots for a while. The World Championships will start September 28, 2018.There are still some Skeet shooting opportunities so check your schedule and make plans. We have several shoot reports for you this month and an update on the renovations at Bridgeview Gun Club in Port Allen, Louisiana. We also have a few pictures from the Junior World Skeet Championships which were held August 3-5. Congratulations to all those who participated. In the last issue we had a lot of good stuff for sale in the Buy, Sell or Trade feature. A lot of it sold. There are still some items there worth considering. Check it out. If you have something to sell there, send me a write up. As you will see from the obituary on the next page, we lost another Skeet friend. Commander Merrill L. "Cotton" Talbott, USN Retired died on August 8, A member of the NSSA, LSSA and LSCA Halls of Fame, Cotton made great contributions to the shooting sports over his life. You are invited to a celebration of Cotton's life at memorial services at St. Timothy United Methodist Church, 335 Asbury Drive, Mandeville, Louisiana on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 11:00 AM sharp with visitation at the church 10:00 AM preceding the service. I was cleaning out some old s today and I found this one that Cotton had sent me in July of last year. It reads; Doug, what a large part of my life the shooting sports have been and countless memories of the shooters teammates and memorable shoots. The Strawberries and Cream, the Tiger Open, the Jean Lafitte, the Spring Fiesta, the Magic City and the Nationals when we had over 100 Louisiana shooters in attendance for several years. The shoots in Houma with trap houses made from oil tanks. I miss it. C. We will miss you too Cotton! Thank you for your service. Until I see you in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3@8! Doug Frey Page 2

Commander Merrill L. "Cotton" Talbott, USN Retired On the evening of Wednesday, August 8, 2018, Commander Merrill L. "Cotton" Talbott died peacefully, but unexpectedly, while resting at home. There is not enough time or pages of print to recount his love of life. He was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, 87 years ago on January 31, 1931, to Arden and Elizabeth Talbott. Supporting him in all his endeavors, Navy life and beyond, was his beloved wife Patricia Ann Reddell Talbott. She predeceased him after 53 years of marriage in 2004, a loss he felt always. Emily Benton, Baton Rouge, was a companion in the later years, a source of great happiness. Cotton was especially loved and cared for by his daughter and son who brought joy and laughter to his life. Commander Talbott is survived by his daughter, Mary Lizabeth Talbott and her husband, Galen Brown, New Orleans; his son Stephen Clay Talbott and his wife, Laura Coker Talbott, Mandeville; by his two Scott Rennick grandsons, Stephen Merrill and Thomas Alan Talbott, Mandeville; his sister Elizabeth "Betty Sue" Wengert and her husband Walter Wengert, Orange Park, FL; his by his two grandsons, Stephen Merrill and Thomas Alan Talbott, Mandeville; his sister Elizabeth "Betty Sue" Wengert and her husband Walter Wengert, Orange Park, FL; his brother-in-law, LTC Eugene Reddell, Army, Ret., Pearland, Texas; as well as several nieces and numerous cousins. He had countless friends, all of whom were dear to him. The family moved from Chillicothe to Corpus Christi when Cotton was 4 years old. He was quickly nicknamed "Cotton" by schoolmates because of his white-blonde hair. This name he enjoyed and retained his entire life. After living in Corpus Christi for seven years the family added Betty Sue, a little sister. Cotton later graduated from Sulphur High School in 1947 and McNeese State University in While at, the rodeo team, of which he was a founding member, won the National AAA Intercollegiate Rodeo Championship. His naval reserve summer duties earned him the "Honor Man" award at the Great Lake, Illinois Naval Training Center. Following graduation, Cotton was commissioned as an officer and assigned to his first destroyer escort in Newport, Rhode Island. Cotton was sent to the Navy submarine school in New London, CT, where he returned as an instructor after being stationed in Key West, FL aboard the U.S.S. Spikefish. After these tours, new orders sent him to submarine duty in Charleston, SC. Cotton requested a transfer to surface warfare during the Vietnam War. Page 3

Commander Merrill L. "Cotton" Talbott, USN Retired He was stationed aboard the ammunition ship, U.S.S. Rainier, berthed in Walnut Creek, CA. While serving two tours, the U.S.S. Rainier earned the "E" award for excellence and Cotton was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.. After this tour he was sent to Virginia Beach, VA where he served on the CINCLANT staff and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal. Retiring from the 8th Naval District New Orleans, Cotton received the Meritorious Service Medal for 28 years active military service. Following military service, Cotton's civilian profession combined his military training with his love of the sea. He attained the difficult Coast Guard certification All-Oceans license, and for 12 years delivered tugs and supply boats all over the world. Cotton was a competitive and champion skeet shooter. During his military career, he was a founding member of the Armed Forces Skeet Association. He served as the All-Navy Shotgun Team Captain for 10 years and was Military All-American twice. A true ambassador for the sport, Cotton was an active member of various skeet associations and provided leadership in skeet shoots across the country. The AFSA inducted Cotton into the Hall Of Fame in In 1992, he was awarded the General Kenneth Pletcher award for his service to the association and to skeet shooting. In 2011, Cotton was selected as one of AFSA's Directors Emeritus and continued to provide guidance and mentorship until his passing. Cotton was inducted into the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association Hall of Fame in 2001 and was elected to the Louisiana Sporting Clays Association Hall of Fame in In 2014 Cotton was the recipient of the coveted Ray Boller award and was inducted into National Skeet Shooting Association Hall of Fame at that time. Cotton was a member of St. Timothy's Methodist Church. He looked forward to the church's weekly Men's Bible Study. He served as a life member of the Navy League; member of the Military Officers Association of America, MOAA Ozone Chapter; Naval Order of the United States, National Officer from 2010 to the present; Redfish Submariners; United States Submarine Veterans; The Holland Club, Submarine Veterans; and Board Member of Forest Park Homeowner Association. Cotton made lifelong friends in all of these many endeavors. He was unflagging and loyal to all of them. As avid sportsmen, Cotton and his son Clay enjoyed hunting, sailboat racing, and trail-riding. Colorado guide, rodeo rider, spear fisherman, drag racer, scuba diver, parachute jumper, gardener, chef, and wine cellar builder -- all are a testament to his unstoppable spirit and joy and love of life. Cotton was always grateful for all the gifts given to him. We will miss him terribly. Please join us for a celebration of Cotton's life at memorial services at St. Timothy United Methodist Church, 335 Asbury Drive, Mandeville, Louisiana on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. sharp with visitation at the church 10:00 preceding service. 10 HAT SHOOT EVENT The shooting sports have a tradition that does not appear to be replicated anywhere else, The Hat Shoot Event. Since most of our readers shoot clay targets and many compete in Skeet, Trap or Sporting Clays, most of them know about this tradition. It started long before I started shooting Skeet and I have not yet determined the origin of this tradition. If you know, please enlighten me. For those who do not know, the first time a shooter shoots 25 straight or 50 or 100 straight, his or her shooting friends want to shoot their hat to celebrate. Some clubs have prohibited this practice for safety reasons. Others celebrate it and you will find lots of shot up hats hanging on the walls or from the rafters. Each hat usually has the name of the shooter, the number of targets being celebrated and the date. Most of the clubs (if not all) I shoot at in Louisiana celebrate shooters successes in this manner. Some clubs have implemented some common sense safety rules to protect every one. Here are the rules I use when hosting Skeet shoots. 1. All celebratory hat shoots are held at the end of the shooting day after the competition and the shoot-offs end. This allows all who are interested to participate and/or watch in a safe and controlled manner. 2. The shooters are lined up across the field and are instructed to load only two shells. You may have to direct the shooters as to where to stand for best photographic and safety results. I find that laying down the pull cord can help with that. 3. The shooters are instructed to only shoot the hat in the air when it is thrown. Absolutely no shooting of hats on the ground is allowed. 4. The celebrating shooter, who shot their first straight, puts 3 clay targets in their hat and folds the bill under the back strap to keep it together. I recommend using clay targets and not rocks. 5. The shooter stands behind the line of shooters and pitches the hat underhanded up and over the heads of the shooters as high as they can, but with an arc that places the hat well out in front of the shooters. 6. Since I am taking pictures with my camera on automatic fast setting, I position myself 15 or 20 feet behind the shooters and crouch down and can press the button down to take multiple pictures which include the shooters and the hat being hit in the background. 7. The celebrating shooter is instructed to pitch the hat on my call of Pull. 8. Don t forget to turn on the camera! If you have pictures of a Hat Shoot Event, please send them to us. We love to share success stories! Doug Frey Page 10

The North Louisiana Open August is tough on Skeet shooters in the South. The triple digit temperatures forecasted for the North Louisiana Open at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale AFB did not deter the 22 competitors that came to compete in the heat. We had no rain and only a few clouds all weekend. Occasionally, we were teased with a slight breeze. The fun started on Friday, August 24 with a preliminary nonregistered event called Action Skeet. This time compressed shooting venue was created by Cliff Moller and the folks at Briley Manufacturing. We had four shooters who were adventurous enough to try it out prior to engaging in the Doubles Competition. Their scores are listed on the right. If you want to read about the game, look at the July 2018 issue of this publication for a detailed explanation. I enjoyed it myself. I think it will appeal to younger shooters. It moves very quickly, pretty much like shooting Doubles. I would encourage you to talk to Cliff Moller at Briley about their special pickle for shooting Action Skeet. David Hebert, no doubt warmed up from his victory in Action Skeet, kept his momentum posting a 94 in the Doubles Event taking Championship honors. Charles Richardson and Jacob Young were close behind with 93s. David Hebert Page 21

The North Louisiana Open On Saturday, Carl D. Doug Walker posted a smoking 99 taking 12 Gauge Champion honors. Doug Walker Wayne Tanner and Todd Young Wayne Tanner and Todd Young shot-off for Runner-Up in the 12 Gauge Event. Wayne won this one. Charles Richardson took third after winning a shoot-off with Owen Wright and Mark Windham [pictured below]. Page 22

The North Louisiana Open Wayne Tanner missed a High 5 in the first box and went on to post a smoking 99 to take the 20 Gauge Champion honors. Charles Richardson and Roland Thibodeaux both posted 98s. Charles The Hammer Richardson won the shoot-off for Runner-Up. Charles and Roland are pictured below. Mike Vickers and Doug Walker both posted 96s and shot-off for A2 and A3. Mike won that shoot-off. Doug Frey beat Bill McIntyre [pictured below] in the shoot-off for C2 in the 20 Gauge Event. Page 23

The North Louisiana Open Sunday. Thank you Kacie for taking my spot and allowing me to try to fill Debbie s shoes. Pictured below are Wayne Tanner and Roland Thibodeaux who shot-off for.410 Bore A2. Roland won that one. Sunday s weather was the same as Saturday, more heat. Charles The Hammer Richardson was on his game this day. Charles posted a 98 to take the 28 Gauge Champion Honors and followed that up with a 95 in the.410 for Champion honors. Roland Thibodeaux and David Hebert took Runner-Up and Third in the 28 Gauge Event with their 97 s. The heat was brutal and all the shooter s were staying hydrated with bottled water provided by the club. I wasn t sure I was going to finish the 20 Gauge Event on Saturday. Debbie had to take off Sunday for a family emergency, so I gave my spot to another shooter who just wanted to shoot Page 25

The North Louisiana Open Our readers know by now that we eat pretty good at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club. The main reason for that is the gentleman pictured on the left, Lloyd Webb. In that picture he is preparing some delicious New York Strip Steaks for grilling. These were served with salad, mashed potatoes and gravy and California mix roasted vegetables. Dessert was a club favorite Cherry Dump Cake prepared by Debbie Frey and served warm with Vanilla Blue Bell Ice Cream. Manning the grill below is Kelly Haydel of Haydel s Duck Calls. On Saturday, we dialed it back a notch with grilled burgers, hot dogs, some delicious deer sausage and Bratwurst with onions. Sunday Dessert was another club favorite, especially on hot days, Paula Dean s Ice Cream Sandwich Cake made by Doug and Debbie Frey. We never have leftovers on the desserts! Thank you Lloyd, Kelly and Debbie for your wonderful meals! We also want to give a big thank you to Paul Williamson, and his crew including Bobby Rains, Phillip Harris and Jimi Osbourne who refereed and kept the club running and the water in the ice boxes! Thank you to all the shooters who came to play. We have one more registered Skeet shoot at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club this year. Our Club Championship and Open will be held September 15, This will be a 200 Target 12 Gauge Marathon. If you prefer to register targets in a smaller gauge, let me know and we can arrange it. For this shoot high score (regardless of the gauge shot) will win the Open Championship plaque. The highest score from a Club Member wins the Club Championship. Let me know if you want to shoot. 33 Baton Rouge Open We had a few minor hiccups due to battery problems (primarily not enough sunlight to keep them charged), but those problems should disappear when the electricity is hard wired to the houses and control units. Our referees said no broken targets. Eddie Baker and I have been discussing having a large (50+ shooters) 4 gun shoot i.e. like Red Stick. 40 Lube Your Loader Doug: I was fighting my 9000 G when it occurred to me it had not been lubed since January. The following list details how I do it and what is needed. Lubricate your loader: Your loader needs to be lubricated several times a year. Because of the potential to contaminate your powder and primers the amount of lubrication used must be the least required to do the job. Don't flood it! I like to clean all the dust and grime off first with compressed air or a brush. Two of the things people tend to forget are the collet and primer tray. Here are the steps to do the job: 1. The collet should be coated with anti-seize compound. MEC makes one but I like copper bearing compound from the Auto Parts store. Do not lube the inside diameter of the tube, it must be dry! 2. The primer tray should be waxed! Car wax is best but Pledge will do, don't forget to put a tiny drop of oil on the pivot point. 3. All pivot points should be lubricated with Tri Flow, Break Free, or if you don't have one of those, gun oil. 4. I use DuPont Teflon/wax spray on the bar. This stuff dries to a white powder that will not hurt the propellant. Graphite powder will also do the job. 5. I lightly spray the center post with Tri Flow or Break Free. These products dry and still provide lubrication. 6. While doing these minor chores, check your drop tubes. I was shocked when I found a wad finger in one of my drop tubes. It was the first time in many thousands of reloads. Also if your lube gathers a lot of dust, it is making grinding compound. Clean it up and redo it. Bill Page 40

THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via . That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet.
