1 IKES NEWS VOLUME 15 ISSUE APRIL/ MAY 2015 Published monthly by the Lincoln Izaak Walton League WES S NOTES Look s like this spring turkey season is running a path similar to that of last winter s ice fishing season. On one week then off a week and back on for a few days. Earlier, one of my mentor kids harvested a great gobbler and then last week end we could not get a gobble anywhere and only a few struts out of the tom s we did get a glimpse of. Hoping this weekend will be back on the sunny side and the urge to strut and gobble takes over for those wild birds. CHAPTER HAPPENINGS There is plenty to talk about around the campfire at Lincoln Ikes these days. As we are finishing up the high school trap conference season with record numbers of young shooters we have been contacted by an anonymous donor who would honor our program with a substantial gift to improve the trap ranges to better serve those growing numbers of young shooters. So you will notice landscape changes from a couple of weeks ago already to prepare for the installation of one more trap house. It really looks different with the tree growth between the rifle and trap ranges down, but then that is the way it looked when the Ikes took possession of this property back in the 60s as per our historic photo file. Almost before the trees were down Brandt Excavating began the task of bringing the fill up to grade with the additional donation of cheap dirt. We ll have to pay for leveling and shaping, but member Rick is also a huge supporter of what we do with the kids. Thanks really do extend to Dick Mavis for all the work of soliciting bids and figuring out what it will take to get the added trap and some upgraded lights in place with this project. The target date to see completion of this effort is before the snow flies this fall. Thank you to all, especially our anonymous donor. You make things better for everyone. If all goes well there will also be several additional scouting projects leading to Eagle Award associated with the above project. Some of the smaller facets like completing the clean graveling of the infields, new gun racks, refurbished scoring benches and concrete pads for the trash barrels are examples of scouts having an impact in the overall operations. Way to go scouts!! As one of our national leaders observed recently, the Ikes can provide a natural continuation into adulthood, of the things scouting is all about, outdoor activities and conservation. 2 PAGE 2 IKES NEWS WES S NOTES [CONTINUED] announcing what could be a high light event for the Lincoln Ikes for this year. On May 30 th we will be hosting the first of hopefully many annual fundraisers for the Nebraska Sportsmen s Foundation. The $30 dollar ticket includes a great meal as well as your annual membership in the NSF and then the expected raffles and auction of things you can t live without. The Wall of Guns will return to highlight the raffles. So I encourage you to get seven of your buddies together and buy a table of 8 for the evening. See the poster for details. Or bring your spouse out for an evening of fun. It is important to understand that the NSF is the only organization that has a full time employee working for sportsmen s issues in our state capital. Organized back in 2002, we have seen many great results by having a person downtown on issues such as the shooting range protection act(very important to us) and LR40CA(the constitutional amendment that protects hunting and fishing for future generations) as well as the current debate going on about mountain lions and a lot of other side issues. Also you should know that the State Division of Ikes have joined many others like PF, DU, NFOA and several corporations that are sponsoring members of the NSF. In the meantime the NSF needs individual members helping to support the work of the sportsmen s legislation. This is your chance to do your share and who knows you may get to see your own state senator as all are invited and several have said they would like to come out for this event. We do have some friends in that esteemed body. MEMBERSHIP As the membership chair I would be remiss not to mention that renewal options are still available if for some reason you missed getting rejoined for this year. But then again you probably won t be getting this newsletter. Help your lapsed buddies by telling them to go online or mail back their info and dues. If they happen to go to the range and the gate won t open, probably it s because the dues are not current. We can rectify that with the use of these wonderful electronics that we have now. And of course new memberships can get your friends on the range after the short orientations provided they understand and accept the conditions of our range protocols. Do you think of a member that deserves a little pat on the back for going an extra mile in behalf of our chapter? If you have a name please pass it on to one of the board members. It is our goal to recognize those special folks. Lastly, it is not too early to be Free firewood NEW MEMBERS [continued from page 1] Richard Lorenzen Roger McCullough James J. McManis David Metz Brent Meyers Mark Ruhl Dan Scott Scott Strain Robert L. Stuchlik Thomas Trowbridge Brent Tuxhorn Andrew Watson thinking about the annual meeting (date TBA probably in July) if you would be interested in finding a seat on the board of directors. Or maybe you just want to attend a board meeting to see how we operate. You are always welcome and encouraged to participate on those 2nd Tuesdays of the month at 7:15PM. Enough Ramblin But remember this; Show me a man with both feet firmly on the ground, and I ll show you a man who can t get his pant off. Idle thoughts of a retiree s wandering mind. Cheers- Wes Sheets Removing the trees for the new trap range has created a nice pile of good ash, hackberry and elm firewood which is available for salvage. Access couldn't be easier: All you need is your own saw and way to haul it away. That brushy group of limbs and logs just south of the new outhouse is yours for the taking. Leave the twigs and we'll make some habitat with it. Oh yes, close by you will notice another pile of cottonwood logs that we thought we had a sawmill owner's interest, but turns out his inventory is too large at this time so if you or a friend need them they are also available.

3 VOLUME 15 ISSUE 04/05 PAGE 3 What Happened to the Target Retrieval system on range 3? It s been a while since the two new target retrieval systems have been taken out of use. I have been asked and explained to a few members why this was done, but not everyone knows why. Hopefully this will clear things up. The systems were shut down because people were not aware of what they were doing while shooting. One of the basic gun rules, Know what is behind your target, was a rule that was not followed very well. With the retrieval system people had the option of placing the target close up or at any point away from them. This caused bullet impacts to change and some bullets were not staying in the boundaries of the pistol area. One example; shooting at a target close to you causes some bullets to skip on the ground and bounce up between the 25-yard plate and the berm behind it. Another example; having the target placed down say 20 yards, and shooting from a stable position off the bench. The angle of this shot is upward through the target and out the northwest corner of the pistol range. Both of these examples are HAPPENED! Another TRUE example; having your son crank the target towards you while you empty your semi-auto clip in the moving target. Some of these shots impacted the railing system, not the target. And this one given to me by a veteran pistol shooter: While on the pistol range he noticed a guy sweeping his gun across the firing line. When he told the person what he was doing was wrong, the guy said, it s OK, it s not loaded. Basic rule number one, treat everyone firearm as if it were loaded. The guy picked up things and left the fringe line not wanting to be around someone that was unsafe. Some one who did not care about safety on the range. These are some of the reasons why the retrieval system was discontinued. These members were the ones that we found. We know that there were many more that we did not catch. So for the ranges safety and everyone else s safety, the system was shut down. Now what? The Safety Committee is working on some things to try to make this area safer. We did not foresee that the moving target system was going to cause these problems. The local indoor ranges with the same system are monitored during their use. Will we have to have an RSO on range when people are present? That would be one answer. But then the Ikes doesn t have paid RSOs. Right now the RSOs volunteer their time when they can. Dose that mean that the range would only be open at certain times? This is one of the things that the committee is looking at. Hopefully some solution can be found to resolve the situations on this range. But what ever the committee comes up with will be aimed at making this a safe pace to shoot. Until that time the system will remain inactive. Mike Shapoval IZAAK WALTON BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING Tuesday, May 12 7:15pm AT THE CLUBHOUSE ALL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND GOT A PARTY? Lurlie Campbell, President Nebraska Division of the Izaak Walton League Sodtown Road A Note From Your Editor: What s Up With The Newsletter You may have noticed that Ikes News has been moving a little slow lately. I know there is important information in these pages, and that the members depend on that information to make their plans. There are several things that have conspired to bog things down, but the big one is that I, your humble editor, have developed some health issues that have eaten up both my time and energy. Things are getting better, but things might be slow for a while longer. Thanks for your understanding. John Carter
