1 IKES NEWS VOLUME 19 ISSUE 1 JAN 2019 Published monthly by the Lincoln Izaak Walton League COME ONE! COME ALL!! The Lincoln Ikes Outdoor Sportsman s Sale will be held on Saturday, February 9 th (please see the enclosed flyer and feel free to share with those you know too!). Here is some basic information for this fun event: We still have some tables available if you are interested in renting. Tables are $5 for our members and $10 for non-members with a maximum of 2 tables. Our kitchen will be serving at 11:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. $2 admission. Youth 17 and under are free. We are in need of many volunteers. There are many areas and shifts that we can use your help. We will need people to help unload and load, kitchen helpers, door check-in, door watch, and at our club table. If you are interested in helping with any of these areas, please contact our organizer, Shane Krause, at or c3ae@hotmail.com. We appreciate any and all help! We want to give a big thank you to Shane for organizing this great event for all. Much time and planning has taken place for this Ike s community event. We appreciate all who are giving of their time and energy to make it fun for all. Hope to see many of you then! PLEASE NOTE: Good news, we have Rifle & Pistol Range improvements coming! In the very near future, we are going to be doing work on and making improvements to Rifle/ Pistol Ranges 1, 2, and 3. Among other things, there will be significant dirt work being done on these ranges and that work will take the right conditions and multiple days. As such, we will have to close all rifle & pistol ranges during the week to accomplish this. We will keep the ranges open during the weekend, if at all possible. This work is necessary and we hope the end product will be worth the bit of inconvenience! We will send out an notice and update the web calendar when we have the exact dates. THANK YOU for your patience as we complete this project! 2019 IKE S RENEWALS The second and final 2019 renewal notices were mailed recently this past month, and you should have received yours. 4 PAGE 4 IKES NEWS November Six IHMSA Shooters enjoyed the warmth of the first Fall Indoor Air Gun Match. No wind, no ear muffs, just a little pop when a shooter pulls the trigger. With all the snow and cold that we are having this year, the Indoor Matches are a warm welcome to any shooter that would like to shoot, but is not wanting to tough out the cold. To find out when the Matches are held check the IKKS News Letter Calendar. Below are pictures of the shooters that shot in the November 2018 Match You can see the well organized range layout. Ed Mundorf has done a great job with range set up on the outdoor range this summer and indoor range as well. (Nov. 5, 2018) The Nebraska Sports Council (NSC) presented awards to top 2018 Cornhusker State Games (CSG) athletes and volunteers Thursday at its annual Awards Banquet at the Graduate Hotel in Lincoln. Officials also paid tribute to sponsors and donors while celebrating a year of events and programs enjoyed by more than 24,000 Nebraskans. Among the award recipients was youth trapshooting director and Lincoln Izaak Walton League member Dave Tunink who received the Russ White Memorial Sport Director of the Year Award. Under Tunink s leadership, CSG youth trapshooting participation has grown steadily over the past 10 years and reached a record 331 shooters in See CSG news release for the full list of recipients:

5 PAGE 5 IKES NEWS Family Deer Hunt I was able to deer hunt with my oldest daughter, Jenna Vaughn, the first time in 18 years. She has spent most of those years serving our country. Twice in Iraq during the height of the war, Jordan, Kuwait, and Korea. Her son Aiden, age 10 joined us a couple of times, and was with me when I took a nice doe. Jenna took her buck with her Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08 that I gave her when she was 16. It has a Bell & Carlson stock and Vortex 3x9 40mm scope. The handload used the 160 gr Nosler Partition bullet. She took the running buck from a kneeling position at a ranged distance of 200 yds. A fine shot. I was using my Remington Model 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum with Bell & Carlson stock and Weaver 4x16 scope. My handload used the 175gr Nosler Partition bullet. My grandson Aiden has been deer hunting with me before as an observer and is hoping someday soon to try it himself with the early Christmas present I gave him. A sporterized 1903 Springfield with vintage Weaver 4x and post reticle that my father took his 1 st buck with 53 years ago. A bonus was the pair of Bald Eagles that showed up. Jim Vaughn Wes s Notes Wow, what wild and wacky weather we are having. I don t remember having so many really cold days in Nov and then mild leading up to Xmas followed by a roller coaster to start the New Year. Even with such unpredictability, it has been a great fall Bowhunting with a group of energetic and adventurous young bowhunters. And several of them harvested their first deer ever to make it even better.

6 PAGE 6 IKES NEWS Chapter Happenings By now many of you have responded to the early fall notice about renewing your membership for 2019, and I have to tell you it is great being able to work up the record keeping at a timely spaced out pace. As of today about 60 % of the roster is back on board. We did mail out reminders to the rest of you last week, not to pick on your well being, but to make sure that when you show up at the range gate as the sun warms up the ground that your proximity card will still work. We truly do hope that you will rejoin for the coming year and find some enjoyment pulling a trigger. I must send out an extra special thank you to everyone that showed up early last month to make a go at slowing down our Eastern Red Cedar invasion. I am sure you noticed that recently the cedars have seemed to spring up from the ground and in fact they have. So, the working crew that showed up to lay as many down as possible out behind and around the rifle ranges was outstanding. In fact there were so many folks that I wasn t able to remember everyone s name so I won t mention anyone, but if you were here for the party THANK YOU big time. I guess I could offer kudos to Wayne and Marnie Janssen that brought the specially design commercial weed trimmer which made quick work of lots of growing plants. Estimates of tree removal ranged all the way from hundreds into the thousands. And I am here to estimate 3-5 thousand after working two day to try and pile them up to burn with more to do. A job well done folks and very important to our land management. We are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to get going on range repair of our berms on rifle ranges 1, 2 and 3. A contractor with machinery has been signed to buck up the eroding impact pits on the ranges and hopefully can add some additional berm material behind some of the backers like on the 50 yard intermediate board over on range 1. short term range closures while the work is being done. It is all about having a safe range to use for the long term So watch the newsletter for notice of some short term range closures while the work is being done. It is all about having a safe range to use for the long term. Business down in the Capital Our legislature is back in session and wouldn t you know it. On the first day Senator Hughes introduced a measure that if passed will have huge impacts on our traditional deer hunting in Nebraska. Today some of you which we have contacts with received the description of LB 126 and 127 that would essentially establish a second firearm deer season. The thrust of the bill is to provide landowners who own at least 80 acres from 4 to 16 free licenses to hunt for the 7 days immediately ahead of the regular season, if they also will open 50% of their acres to the public to hunt. Can you imagine the headaches this might cause our game wardens trying to verify and keep the honest hunters honest. The bigger fear is a huge negative impact on financing the conservation efforts of our wildlife department. Not only is there lost revenue for the free permits given away, but free permits do not qualify for the substantial federal P-R excise taxes that come back to our state proportionally. The hearing in committee is scheduled for Wed the 23 rd but if this proposal continues to go forward there will be plenty of time for all hunters and land owners to weigh in on the merits of the bill. For more information you can go to the Unicameral website and look up LB 126 and 127 or feel free to give me a call. Our State Ikes Division is opposed to the measure and will testify on the 23 rd. I will try to report back as time goes forward. Beyond that we still have 3 more days of bill introduction and we will be studying some of the rest of the that will be offered to see what pertains to our activities. Enough Ramblin But for now, remember; Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm. From the desk of Larry the Cable Guy

9 PAGE 9 NEWSLETTER TITLE IKES NEWS Folks----Let me ask for your advice and help in this request from our national Executive Director. I hate long letters but I think this topic deserves some serious thinking. If you have any ideas relative to Scott's request it would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of people that have become outdoors persons (hunters fishers and shooters later in life) and I have a couple of our members in mind, but can you point out our successes in this regard to help with the campaign and magazine story. Wes Good afternoon. I hope you are well. Reaching out to ask for your help as we consider developing an article for Outdoor America magazine about folks who started to hunt as adults. At the national level, the League has been actively engaged with other hunting and sportsmen s groups, state DNRs, and the firearms and archery industries in developing a national strategy to recruit, retain, and reactivate (R3) hunters and recreational shooting sports enthusiasts. Through this process, the broader community has come to realize that it is imperative to engage new audiences broadly defined including folks who do not have a family history of hunting, but become interested in it as adults. The League s focus now and going forward is implementing this strategy on the ground. We can play a very tangible role with the engagement of our chapters nationwide. As we work one-on-one with chapters on outreach to new audiences and helping folks take the very first steps toward participation, we continue to try to educate members and others about the broader issues using our national magazine and other communications resources. As we think about shifting recruitment from almost exclusively kid-focused to a better balance with adults, we would like to do a piece for the magazine about adult onset hunters. People who came to hunting later in life whether or not they had a family background that involved hunting or had hunters in their family. I m looking for suggestions of people we could profile in this piece. We ll write it and it will be about more than the people the people will illustrate the larger issues and the benefits of helping adults learn to hunt. And this is an opportunity to highlight programs at chapters that are already making a difference in this area. We re focusing on hunting because participation continues on a sharply downward curve while participation in some shooting sports is moving in a more positive direction or holding fairly steady. Are there specific folks that you or others in your chapter would recommend we reach out to and explore their interest in sharing their stories and experiences? Is there a chapter member or members especially focused on helping adults learn to hunt that you recommend we contact directly? I welcome your thoughts about this. Feel free to circle back by or give me a call if that is more convenient. Look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks, Scott Scott Kovarovics Executive Director Izaak Walton League of America 707 Conservation Lane Gaithersburg, MD (301) ext. 223 (301) (fax) Stay Connected to the League Web Facebook Twitter
