1 Lincoln Ikes News Published monthly by Chapter 65, Lincoln, Nebraska Volume 19 Issue 4 April 2019 Photo by Inuit guide VICTORIA ISLAND, CAMBRIDGE BAY I was fortunate to be able to hunt the Arctic for Muskox, says James Vaughn. The muskox is left over from the Ice Age and the Wooly Mammoths. They also have the longest hair of any living animal. The hunt took place out of a camp a half day north of Cambridge Bay in what was to become Nunavut. It became a country while I was there and officially separated from the Northwest Territories. I arrived there by way of Edmonton, Alberta, then Whitehorse, Yukon. We used wooden sleds pulled by snowmobiles. The Inuit s used snowmobiles as they found that the Muskox would circle right away if dog teams were used, and with the snowmobiles, they would run. We could then follow on foot. Though not far. With the bulky clothing, the winds, and the minus 50 to minus100-degree windchills, it took a lot of effort just to go 200 yards or so. Visit us at

2 Lincoln Ikes News Page 2 The sled was a big wooden box with a front that curved back and over the top, leaving an opening in the back to crawl over and lay down on caribou hides. The box was strapped on long wooden runners with rope. The ride out to hunt was the worst part. You lay on your back or kneel to take the shock. We would travel out 100 miles and back again each day. It was similar to laying on your back on a car hood and being pulled across a corn stubble field or a prairie dog town, with a ditch thrown in every 50 to 100 yards. Rough is such a mild word. It was choppy like going across big waves in a fast boat. After a while, you could feel the organs in your body move with each shock. I used a Remington Model 700 stainless steel rifle in 7mm magnum with handloaded 175 grain Nosler partition bullets. It has a Weaver V16 scope. Our cabin was a 15 x 15 plywood shack frozen on the landscape. Inside was a toilet that was 3 x 3 wide, made from plywood, with a door that wouldn t shut all the way. A bucket with a lid served as a toilet. Photo by Inuit guide I took two Muskox. Both beautiful animals. The second one was taken on the coldest day that year. The wind was blowing at mph, and the weather service only figures windchill to minus 100 degrees. Even the Inuit s were frozen. You can see in Photo-1 how my mustache and eyebrows were covered in ice. The bull charged me, and at 35 yards, I decided he was big enough. NEBRASKA, BANNER COUNTY James Dostal harvested this 13 1/2" antelope October 2018 in Banner County in western Nebraska.

3 Lincoln Ikes News Page 3 James and his dad, Jamie, spotted 2 bucks over 800 yards away mid-morning. The only way to get close enough to shoot was to 200 yards away from them at a right angle. Stalking close enough had to be done across a cut wheat field with round bales scattered throughout. Hopscotching from bale to bale, an hour later he finally got to about 300 yards distance. Using the side of the bale as a rest he steadied for a shot. The Sig Sauer rangefinder confirmed a 304-yard shot with his grandpas Winchester Model 70 chambered in 270 Win topped with a Burris Signature 4-16x scope. The handloaded Hornady 130gr SST propelled by Ramshot Magnum powder made a clean pass through shot right behind the shoulder. The buck expired less than 50 yards later making for a very memorable 1st antelope hunt using Grandpas gun. buck ealier in the day. Parking the vehicle on another part of the property, the 3 of us startd the stalk from 3/4 of a mile away. Slowly walking through knee high grass and sage brush we got to about 900 yards. I noticed an old electric pole in the distance and used it to help conceal us walking towards the buck in single file. This way we were able to cut another 350 yards off the distance. Bryan's Vortex rangefinder dialed in 647 yards to the buck above us on a sidehill. I went prone behind my Cooper Arms Model 22 Varminter chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a Harris bipod. I checked my range card for the distance. Using my Athlon Argos 6-24x scope with ffp mrad reticle I held over 4 mrads and fired. The handloaded Hornady 140gr ELD-Match bullet powered by Ramshot Hunter powder sped to the buck dropping him in his tracks. About the Cover Photo by Newsletter Editor NEBRASKA, BANNER COUNTY Jamie Dostal harvested this nice buck during the October 2018 season in Banner County in western Nebraska. While hunting in another part of the county the landowner called Jamie's friend Bryan with the location of a bedded down buck near his pivot system. The buck had bedded down less than 200 yards from where Jamie's son, James, shot his How would you like to be on the cover of the Ikes Newsletter? Give us your best shot of you, your game and your rifle, along with a short description you your hunt (see cover photo for example). Also include the description of you rifle (Make, model, caliber), your scope (brand, model and reticle type) and what ammunition you used (manufacturer, bullet weight and bullet type). This includes the children of the members. Members are allowed to bring any children age 18 and under with no additional fees or guest passes. That child is NOT allowed to come to the range and shoot without the registered member. Please help our club to make sure these rules are being followed. Thank you. Rifle / Pistol Range Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers who can help us replace the needed backers from time to time. These backers are already made and ready to be put up when needed. These volunteers would check Ranges periodically to see if any backers are needing replaced. If so, the volunteer(s) would take down the old backers, put them in a pile between Range 2 and 3, and then replace them with the new backers from there as well. If you are willing to help our club in this much need area, please contact one of our Managers, Craig or Natalie. Thank you! Rifle / Pistol Range Backer Builders Team Needed This past month, we had a small crew of six volunteers that helped build backers for our rifle/pistol ranges as they were running low. We really rely on our volunteers to help keep these supplied for ALL of our rifle/pistol members. Kudos to Neil Lunzmann, Larry Bennett, Kevin Delka, Ben Keaschall and our managers for helping on a cold, rainy day. If you are able to help with this ongoing project, please let Craig or Natalie know or us at ikes.lincoln@gmail.com. We d love to have you are in need of many hands to make this a light project. With as many rifle/pistol members as we have, we are hoping we have some people step up to help in this area. Rifle / Pistol Ranges Notice: We have Rifle & Pistol Range improvements coming! In the very near future when the weather cooperates, we are going to be doing work on and making improvements to Rifle/Pistol Ranges 1, 2, and 3. Among other things, there will be significant dirt work being done on these ranges and that work will take the right weather conditions and multiple days to complete. As such, we will have to close all rifle & pistol ranges during the week to accomplish this. We will keep the ranges open during the weekend, if at all possible. This work is necessary and the end product will be worth the bit of inconvenience for the additional level of safety offered. We will send out an notice and update the web calendar when we have the exact dates. Thank you for your patience as we work this project. Share Your Winter Salt Watch Findings Sign Up for Spring Save Our Streams Trainings Congress Reauthorizes Land and Water Conservation Fund IWLA Soil Health Forum Held in Iowa Submit Your Volunteer Award Nominations by March 15 Road salt, when used in excess, runs off of roads and into streams and rivers. This extra salt is harmful for aquatic life as well as human health. To combat this problem and raise public awareness, the League has been moving forward full-force with our Winter Salt Watch Campaign! So far, over 120 Salt Watch readings have been submitted from 15 states. Make sure to submit your data too! ( Tim Barry, from the League's Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chapter, has taken over 25 salt watch readings in streams across Maryland. Great work, Tim! You can learn more about road salt and stream health ( i-l-nktnz-yulhdjcjj-j/) on our website and request your free chloride test kit! Instructions for taking and submitting a chloride readng are included in your kit. EPA has proposed a sweeping rollback of Clean Water Act protections for streams and wetlands. Under this proposal, most tributary streams nationwide regardless of where they flow or how they affect water quality and public health could lose protection, threatening drinking water supplies for 1 in 3 Americans, habitat for fish and wildlife, and the $887 billion outdoor recreation economy. Before EPA can implement this damaging policy, it must accept and consider public comments. Please urge EPA to adopt strong protections for streams and wetlands! Save Our Streams training will give you the skills you need to do biological stream monitoring (identifying critters that can tell you a lot about stream health) as well as chemical and physical monitoring. You will also learn how to submit your data to the Clean Water Hub so state and federal agencies and the people in your community can easily access local water quality information.

Send in a request: t/i-l-nktnz-yulhdjcjj-d/ The U.S. House of Representatives passed S. 47, a historic package of public lands and conservation legislation that includes permanent reauthorization for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). In addition to other important provisions, the bill requires that 3 percent of LWCF funding be used to unlock isolated and inaccessible public lands. The legislation now heads to the president to be signed into law. By permanently reauthorizing the Land and Water Conservation Fund, Congress has recognized what sportsmen and other outdoor enthusiasts have always known: LWCF is America s most proven method for putting public lands conservation on the ground and facilitating access to outdoor recreation, says Jared Mott, IWLA's conservation director. We look forward to President Trump quickly signing this important legislation and permanently protecting Americans access to their public lands and opportunities for outdoor recreation. On February 18, the League hosted a legislative forum on soil health, water quality, and related issues at the Iowa state capitol. IWLA agriculture outreach coordinator Tim Wagner and Iowa Division conservation chair Mike Delaney organized the forum, part of an effort to ensure state legislation reflects the science of soil health. For more on this topic, read "Leveraging Conservation Dollars." -nktnz-yulhdjcjj-h/ Fourteen Iowa state legislators attended the forum along with representatives from IWLA and other Iowa conservation groups. Topics included the principles of soil health, expanding the use of cover crops in Iowa, and expanding the current $5/acre crop insurance discount being offered by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to farmers who plant cover crops. Matt Russell, executive director of Iowa Interfaith Power and Light, explained how farmers can use soil health practices to mitigate climate change. Don Arnosti, executive director of the IWLA Minnesota Division, briefed participants on the League's Upper Mississippi River Initiative. 11 Lincoln Ikes News Page 11 New Members The 26th annual Sioux Empire Water Festival was attended by over 1,900 fifthgrade students from 37 schools. The festival, which featured 36 exhibits and 22 presentations, provides an excellent opportunity to introduce kids to the League. For the 24th year, the Sioux Falls Ikes had a booth at the festival. Chapter members and League staff talked with hundreds of kids about the importance of clean water for people and fish and wildlife. Ikes distributed information about the League's conservation programs and the Sioux Falls Chapter. Students learned how they can prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species while they are enjoying the outdoors to protect the future health of lakes, rivers, and streams a particularly critical issue for the Missouri River today. 12 Lincoln Ikes News Page 12 Rifle Range 4 Furnishings Diagram Last month I showed you the proposed new furnishings arrangement for Range 2. This month I want to show you the proposed new furnishings for Range 4. If it looks like the space between the shooting benches and park benches on this range is a little tighter than those on Range 2, it is by about 12. However, at 4-3 you still have the equivalent of a city sidewalk in width to wall the entire length of the range. Range Furniture Funding We Need Your Help In order to fund these furniture purchases we need the generous financial support from individuals, businesses or corporations you may know or are affiliated with. The donor will have to option to have their name or business name emblazoned on a placard mounted to the furnishing of choice (rifle rack or park bench).
