Kennick BBQ Day - August Cast your mind back to the summer BBQ and we had a great day with approx 40 turning up for BBQ lunch and fishing in both morning and afternoon. We also had a presentation by Evelyn Stacey of the Kayak won by Bill Hande. After lunch when most had either left for the day or gone out for the afternoon session, Bill took the Kayak for its first outing. Bill was wearing his life jacket and after half an hour, the kayak was upside down. The rescue of our Chairman went into full swing with Mark Baxendale jumping straight in and swimming out to tow both the kayak and Bill back to shore. I was the nearest boat and by the time I got on the scene, Bill was pushing the kayak back to shore. I would like to re iterate that at No time was Bill ever in danger as he was wearing his life jacket and thanks to Mark who reacted so quickly. Please see life jacket check later in this newsletter. I spent the next half an hour looking for Bill's rod which did go into the reservoir but has yet to this day to be found. All that was recovered was Bill's hat! 3 CHEW VALLEY - WEEKEND AWAY - August We had a weekend away trip to Bristol Reservoirs, Blagdon and Chew Valley. In August you would expect to have nice warm and sunny days. We arrived for breakfast at the Seymour Arms for breakfast on the Saturday morning, we were staying in the Seymour that night so was good to book in as it was pouring down. Saturday was a really wet and fairly gloomy day, 6 of us didn't catch but the winners on the day pictured top right were Alec Hoare and Nigel Perrin who found the fish. Back to the Seymour Arms for dinner and a few pints of Butcombe soon helped forget the wet day, with all the gear in the drying room, yes it is August! Landlord Chris Timothy former 4 times England International was on hand behind the bar to give us a few tips for the next day on Chew. As midnight approached and the Whiskey came out we all had our plans set up for the morning. After a great breakfast we headed off to Chew and the weather was better with the sun out and the fish were on the move. The majority of the 16 anglers caught fish with the best fish going to Paul Wicks and Darren Penfold pictured middle right. We were even given a display from the Red Arrows as it was the Bristol Balloon Festival, I can think of worse places to be! The weekend was a success and I am sure we will repeat again, I can recommend the hospitality that Jo and Chris at the Seymour Arms provided for a reasonable price. 2 X SEASON TICKETS TO BE WON Chris Hall has 2 Season tickets available to be auctioned by sealed bid only at the end of the year. These tickets were donated by the Winners of the Peninsula Pairs Event held in September on Wimbleball. Sealed bids must be sent to Chris Hall by or envelopes are available at both Kennick and Wimbleball. This will raise funds for South West Fishing For Life which is the Breast Cancer Fly Fishing Charity. Bids must be in by 31st December. chall@swlakestrust.org.uk WIMBLEBALL PAIRS - September Anglers from all over the South West region attended this annual boat pairs fishing competition, held at Wimbleball Lake, and organised by the South West Lakes Trust. This year's competition was held on Sept 5th and was generously sponsored by Orvis fishing tackle and clothing company, who provided the prizes. The weather was kind on the day, with the rain holding off, although the wind did pick up in the afternoon. All teams caught fish with 3 teams catching their competition limit of 16 fish ( with one team bagging up by lunchtime) Most boats headed for Ruggs / Bessoms area at the start and remained there all day as this area proved to be the most productive area, although others did catch fish in Cow Moor and in the Narrows. 127 fish were caught in total by 26 anglers, giving an excellent competition rod average of 4.6 fish per rod. The Avon Fly Fishing Club A team (Richard Nicholls and Ian Prescott from the Bristol area) narrowly won the competition with a bag of 16 fish weighing 23lbs 6oz, fishing with tadpoles. Dave Johns and Paul Jones ( Innis Team) from Cornwall took 2nd place with 16 fish for 23lbs 3oz. The Nomads ( Martin Braund and Jeremy Summers) took 3rd place with 16 fish for 21lbs 7oz. Rob Gale ( Kennick A) took the heaviest fish of the day AT 3lbs 9oz. As said above the Winners have generously offered to auction their 2011 season ticket prizes to raise funds for the fishing for life cancer charity. Kennick fielded 9 teams in this event which was fantastic and clearly shows the club has a healthy boat competition scene.
4 LECHLADE - October Darren Penfold We have all seen the DVD of Matt Hayes and Ian Barr catching large specimen rainbow and brown trout at Lechlade Trout Fishery in Gloucester, so Paul Wicks and I decided to have a go for some of these specimens. The day was set for Friday October 1st, the weather forecast was very wet and it certainly was, we arrived at 0915 and went into the tackle shop to book in and find out what was working! With our confidence high we both opted for a 4 fish ticket and I asked what methods were working, buzzers were recommended, I also asked whether there were any large fish stocked to which he replied the big ones are stocked from November when the water is cooler, but there are plenty of double figure fish stocked to test your knots! Both Paul and I were keen to get the line in the water after traveling for over 2 hours, with the chance of a double figure fish this only excited us more. I opted for a two rod set up one with a floating line and a team of buzzers and a clear slow intermediate with a single fly as the water did not look that deep and there were areas of weed at the top end. We walked along the bank looking for a place to start, there were already a few people fishing the bank and in the boats. The guys in the boats were fishing buzzers under a bung with some success. Paul continued around to the small bays at the bottom of the lake while I stopped and fished a narrow section of the lake where there is an island, hoping to spot a cruising fish. There were some large fish cruising along the margins about a foot or so off the bank, they would follow my fly but I could not tempt these fish to take, so I put my favourite pattern, an olive hothead damsel and began to fish the swim strategically in cast position and depth, until a tap was felt and a large trout was following my fly in, the fly was only a foot off the bank and the fish was still right behind it, with the rod held high I let the damsel hang and the fish took and off it went across the lake. I could see that it was a good fish and I could feel the weight of the fish, it made a couple of good runs across the lake until it surfaced at which point I thought I hope it fits in my net! It was a 10lb 5oz Brownie. Lechlade is well known for its specimen brown trout and I had good fortune of hooking and landing one of these fish. There were good fish landed throughout the day, Paul had 2 rainbows for 15lbs and I had another Brown for 7lbs 2oz. The fishing was not easy by any means, the fish were definitely there, you could see them as the water was very clear and all the fish were big. They would follow your fly with the odd take but the majority would turn away after inspecting what was on offer, to quote Matt Hayes the fishing was challenging but ultimately rewarding and I would recommend fishing at Lechlade, its a very nice fishery, the fish are grown on site with daily stocking and there were friendly helpful staff available, the website is LECHLADE Lechlade and Bushyleaze trout fisheries lie in the Cotswold countryside near the head waters of the Thames. Lechlade is a 9 acre lake stocked daily with home produced Rainbows and Brown Trout averaging 6lbs but go up to 30lbs! Double figure fish are stocked every day. Lechlade is a Troutmaster water. Bushyleaze is a 22 acre lake which is stocked daily with home produced Rainbows and Brown trout averaging 2lbs, with some fish between 4-6lbs and a regular stocking of double figure fish. There is a well stocked tackle shop on site. This fishery is open all year round so if anyone fancies a trip during the Winter please speak up and we can arrange a trip if we have enough interest. For full details on prices look at Darren Penfold with his 10lb 5oz Lechlade Brown Trout If you would like Kennick to arrange a trip please me at johnhern18@tiscali.co.uk
5 INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS As many of you know I recently had cause to use a life jacket, see report on page 2. That set me thinking about dozens of inflatable life jackets around that are never serviced and the false sense of security these, possibly dangerous, life jackets give to their owners. The gas cylinders and firing capsules on life jackets have a limited life;some makes are 5 years and the more common only 3 years. Just think, it may have been hanging around in the shop for 2 years before you bought it and therefore only had 1 year life remaining. I know of an instant were an unsuspecting angler bought a life jacket with the gas cylinder and capsule already expired! The instructions on the jacket tell you that it should be serviced annually. While it is recommended that a dealer do this you can do the job yourself. Open the Velcro on the cylinder side; you can feel the cylinder through the jacket. Ensure the firing capsule has not been fired inadvertently. The capsule shows an expiry date on the side and a green button on the top. If the green button is detached or missing and/or the expiry date has been reached THE LIFE JACKET MUST NOT BE USED. Check that the green security saddle is in place on the firing head. If not, unscrew the cylinder and check that it has not been pierced. Check your Life jacket for signs of wear or abrasion every time you put it on. See that the belts are securely attached. Check the straps, webbing and stitching for signs of damage. If any damage is found, DO NOT USE YOUR LIFE JACKET. Instructions for the servicing and re arming of life jackets can be found on the Crewsaver websitewww.crewsaver.co.uk The Marine warehouse at or also have a supply of re-arming kits for most makes of life jackets at reasonable prices. You can send your life jacket away to be serviced, a full service consists of:- Check cover for dirt and damage Inflate stole and test for pressure loss Examine webbing and stitches Check operating head and cylinder seat gaskets Examine reflective tape Replace cylinder Replace auto base cap or bobbin as appropriate Check operation of oral tube non return valve Check oral tube at seal, bend and shaft for damage Check manifold at seal, stud and nut for damage Check stole for abrasion Check stole welds for enbrittlement Check security of stitching throughout Examine buckles/closure/d rings for damage Examine all taped and bound edges for fraying Check whistle is present So the message is clear and simple, before you go out in a boat in 2011 season make sure your life jacket has been checked and is in date or cylinder replaced. Bill Hande - Chairman RUTLAND TRIP We are considering a weekend trip to Rutland next year, depending on the interest from the club. Proposal would be to fish on a Saturday, stay over in a B&B on the Saturday night then fish Sunday. Please forward interest to Mike Stone - mikestone17@hotmail.co.uk This might replace the Chew / Blagdon trip or be additional, really YOUR choice? If you have other venues you would like the committee to investigate, please let John Hern know.
6 FLY TYING FAIR TRIP - STOKE October 31 As the clocks go back you always associate the time of year with getting the fly tying gear sorted, or if you had put your clocks back correctly meeting at 0630 at Exeter park and ride. The bus left on time, no one overslept and we were en route at a steady 65. Apologies for the roof rack but this was a faster vehicle! After a Full English breakfast stop at Strensham we arrived at Trentham Gardens near Stoke for We had a full day planned to watch some of the best tiers from around the world and look for bargains at all the stands. We all had items on the shopping list and Darren managed to find the only UV varnish at the show and the purchase had been made before I had even got into the show! We all watched Oliver Edwards tying some of his favourite patterns which was well worth the trip just to watch him in action. We all remember watching the Magic Tool on the Marc Petit Jean stand last year and is truly an art in itself in tying a CDC. You can see some of his sample videos on /marcpetitjean The flies on the left especially the top photo have taken many hours to create and are so realistic. Disappointing not to fill the minibus for this trip as its a great day out and the more who go make it more viable for the club to put these events on. Look out for date next year - John Hern KENNICK + WIMBLEBALL SEASON EXTENSION DURING November BANK FISHING ONLY DAY TICKET 8.00 FOR 2 FISH - MORE TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED SEASON TICKET HOLDERS HAVE A WEEKLY LIMIT OF 4 FISH ALL BROWN TROUT TO BE RETURNED NO STOCKING WILL TAKE PLACE DURING November HOME INTERNATIONAL RESULTS ENGLAND - 63 FISH LBS 3/4OZ IRELAND - 39 FISH - 70 LBS 12 3/4OZ SCOTLAND - 31 FISH 60 LBS 13 /8OZ WALES - 19 FISH - 34 LBS 4 3/4OZ KFFA were able to make a donation to the Youth Team fund which helps in sponsoring the team. It is a great credit to Matt and we are lucky to have him as a member of the club offering advice and support at our events.
