1 November 2002 Volume II, No. 6 Fall Cross Country & Float Fly Oct 6th 2002 By Tom Wild The day started out breezy but improved a bit too windy, A perfect day for a cross country contest. Sadly, only one other pilot, Neal Rohrke agreed with my judgment or lack of (well, not that sad). With only two pilots registered we felt it best that we fly at the same time. I flew my standard Kaviler and Neal had his old yeller. Eric Williams drove us IN STYLE in his GMC 4 door pickup. This was the best ride I have ever had for a cross country. With the back window removed we could actually talk to the driver. With all this extra room we took John Cuba and Helen Rohrke along to act as navigators and spotters. Well, the head winds were a little hard on fuel consumption and Neal was forced to land in the worst of all possible locations. I heard this second had as I had my nose pointed to the clouds circling my plane. Upon returning to base we assessed the damage and discussed the shoulda-woulda-couldas. Afterwards we retired to the club house to eat cinnamon rolls supplied by Eric and some of my homemade chili (sorry about that). I promised to check with Betty Crocker before I put anything in my crock pot again. The afternoon float fly was canceled due to poor weather conditions and lack of float planes. 2 Clanking Armor, Page 2 Notes from the Prez I d like to thank Tom Wild once again for presiding over the October LSK meeting, as I was unable to attend. At the November club meeting we will be handing out a new draft of the constitution. We had hoped to have this completed prior to this, but it seems that it will be early next year. At the November meeting we will be electing new officers. I would like to take this chance to say that I ve greatly enjoyed my tenure as LSK president these last 2 years. Additionally, I d like to thank all of the contributing members and officers, especially Tom Wild and Tom Hefley. They have been of great assistance to the club.. Once again, the Christmas Party will be hosted by The Knolls, on Friday December 6th. If you plan to attend, and will not be present at the November LSK meeting, please call me at Thanks, Don October Club Meeting Minutes: The October 4th meeting of the Lincoln Sky Knights was called to order by Tom Wild at 7:30. Officers in attendance were Tom Wild, Bernie Smith and John Willman. A motion to accept the September minutes was made, seconded and passed. John Willman presented the treasurer s report. The Lincoln Star s blimp finances were discussed. Bills and last year s profits will be discussed at November s meeting. Tom Wild gave a CD report. Dave Reiber commented on the September night-fly. There was a low turnout by Sky Knights, but the visiting combat crowd filled up some of the time. Neil Rohrke reported on the Midwest NATs combat meet, at which there were thirty-six pilots from fifteen states, making it a HUGE success! Thanks go out to everyone who helped. On September 14 th Lynn Elsner hosted a fun fly at his home in Crete. Then on September 21 st LSK participated in a demonstration at the Applejack festival in Nebraska City. On September 28 th, members of LSK traveled to Milford Lake, Kansas for a combat meet and had a great time. Upcoming events: Sunday October. 6 Cross Country and float fly at LSK field; October 20th R/C auction in Omaha; October 27 th Halloween fun fly at LSK field; February 8 th, 2003 LSK auction register 7 a.m. auction at 10:00. New members this month: Joe Best and Clay Shaefer. Welcome to the club! Old business: The runway fund now has approximately $2,500. Tom Hefley is going to call our insurance agents about damage to the club-house roof and some sidewalk repair was discussed. One slab to the southeast of the club house has raised about two inches and should be replaced. New business: Clyde Peters would like LSK members to put on a flight demo Oct. 18. For details call Ron Miller. A sign up sheet was passed around for the LSK Christmas party to be held Friday December 6th at The Knolls country club. Cost should be approximately $ On October 16th an open executive committee meeting to discuss the proposed constitution will be held at 6:30 at the LSK club house. Loren Blinde reported LASS is going to fly at the Lancaster County Event Center field at 84 th and Havelock Avenue. This is over six miles away from the LSK field, so there should be no concerns with radio interference. Tom Hefley announced Sunday indoor flying from 5-7 pm at the Calvert Recreation center. Nominations for LSK Officers were as follows. President: Wilson Hardy, Neal Rohrke, and Mike Yearly; Vice President: Rich Boelts and John Willman; Secretary: Bernie Smith; Treasurer: Bob Schwab and Ken Pierson. The election committee consists of Tom Hefley, Ron Vogel and Helen Rohrke. The 2003 dues were discussed and approved. Dues are $50 a year plus a $25 runway fee. Life time memberships are for general $1000, Major $500. Dave Greathouse reported that AMA dues are going up to $58. Model of the month: Loren Blinde had a Kawasaki Ki-61 EPP foam slope combat model from Dave s Aircraft Works. John Willman had an IFO indoor electric flier from Wild R/C (rumored to be the terror of the gym). Vard Larson had a French Moraine-Saulnier with an O.S..40 Surpass. All three were quite different, but they were all excellent airplanes. Motion to adjourn was seconded and passed and the meeting was adjourned at 8:35. 4 Well, another year is about to close, and we think it s been a pretty good one for the Sky Knights. We d like to thank everyone for the support of their novice newsletter editors, it hasn t been without pain. I has, however been rewarding (in a painful sort of way). Our next issue will be the January issue, so, until that time, we like to take this opportunity to wish everyone happy Clanking Armor, Page 4 holidays, and hope that the new year brings you and yours joy. 7 Kansas Kaos combat Sept 28th 2002 By Tom Wild Clanking Armor, Page 7 Jeff Smith and I traveled to Milford Lake Kansas to do battle, with Bernie Smith acting as pit crew and chauffeur. The guys down Kansas way put on a real nice contest with plenty of help from fellow club members. After raising old glory and singing the national anthem the contest got underway. These Kansas guys have an interesting field with a blacktop runway on a slight uphill slant. With woodlands behind and on each end of the runway, and a fenced in pasture At the end of the contest the scores were tabulated and Sassy beat Tattoo and Sheepy in total scores! The guys lived up to the bet and flew a demo round of combat in their new uniforms (see figure 1)! I felt a lot better about losing my streamer to Sassy after seeing that she d beat Sheepy by less than 100 points. What a difference 10 seconds can make! complete with bushes, hay bales and a tree or two to fly over. The day was full with 6 full rounds of combat and some interesting side wagering. Les Parmenter (Sheepy) had a bet with Jan Stout (Sassy) that, if she beat him, Dean Tuinstra (Tattoo) or Collin McGinnis (Kraut) would wear a pair of girl s pink panties while flying a round of combat. Sassy kept a close watch on the score and her camera handy. Her flying skills are not to be scoffed at; I recall one round of combat where she and I were the last remaining in the air. We both had our streamers left and I was determined to relieve Sassy the burden of bringing her streamer back. With only 10 seconds of combat left in the round I lost my steamer to Sassy! The crowd loved it and I was wondering what the opposite of a victory roll would be.
