Pets on the Poop Deck Seaport Museum Schedule Foss Harbor Classifieds Almost four years ago, I made the approximately 2,000 mile journey to Tacoma from the great state of Texas, with an offer of employment in hand. The position I was so fortunate to have been offered was that of Marina Manager at an up-andcoming marina located in downtown Tacoma on the Thea Foss Waterway. It was a completely new city, state and way of life for me, but I had always wanted to live in the Pacific Northwest and was excited to explore this part of the country. Now, as I head into my th summer in the state of Washington, I m honored to announce that I have accepted the position of General Manager, which is a huge challenge and responsibility and one that I take very seriously. My predecessor did a great job at Foss Harbor and I know that I have some big shoes to fill, but I ve got a great team of people in place to help ensure that we continue providing the same level of outstanding service that you ve come to expect from us. Of course, when one person moves into a different position it means another spot becomes open, and what better place to find a replacement than from our own very highly-qualified team of marina professionals? Melynda Carroll, who just about all of you know and love, is now our new Assistant Marina Manager, and we couldn t be happier for her. She s worked hard for many years and deserves this opportunity, so make sure to stop in and congratulate her the next time you re around the marina! As the calendar flips to June, activity at the marina has already reached fever pitch. Despite a recent downturn in the weather, the marina s slips are full, kayaks and paddle-boards are out in full force and we can barely keep enough beer on the shelves to appease our marina s contingent of thirsty sailors. 3 Linda Gresham s Walk #4 from the Foss Harbor Marina THE MUSEUMS Every third Thursday (May19, June 16, July 21, August 18, etc...), The Tacoma Art, Washington History, and Tacoma Glass Museums are open to the public free of charge (Art and Glass hours free: pm-8pm, History free 2-8pm). This is a wonderful way to take a look without any expense except a little shoe leather! Start on Dock Street, head south under the Murray Morgan Bridge while enjoying the lovely murals, then pass the old Sea Scout Building, and head to the Fish Peddler where you take a left at the light onto the ramp over the railroad tracks. At the end of the bridge, take a left on the sidewalk up Hood Street to the Tacoma Art Museum. Don t miss the outside art if you don t have time now to see the fabulous gallery of Western Art. This is.4 miles from the marina. You are on Pacific Avenue now. Continue south to the Old Union Station which is now a Federal Court House. Look inside to see the Chihuly glass art (You ll need to show a photo ID to enter). Continue on to the newer twin of the Old Union Station, the Washington State History Museum. This is a great place for kids of all ages to see a huge model train layout of Tacoma in another time, plus other exhibits. While on Pacific Avenue, you ll see the LINK train (free) which takes you to the bus station near Freighthouse Square and up to the Commerce Street transportation links to many other Tacoma and Seattle buses. The University of Washington Tacoma branch is on the other side of the street. Look up to the top of the book store to see the words that change as you walk down the street. Take a left just before the entrance to the WSHM to find the Glass Bridge which will take you to the Tacoma Glass Museum with plenty of outdoor art along the way. Look up and to the side and check out the tops of the trains below. Once on the other side of the Glass Bridge, you are on the roof of the Glass Museum. It s a thrill to check out the outside exhibits here. If you have time to go inside, be sure to see the hot shop in action as well as the galleries of glass from famous artists, the gallery of children s designs made into figures that will make you smile (it s on the way to the restrooms), and the gift shop where you ll find glass art from $1 (ladybugs) to a whole lot more. You can loop back to Foss Harbor Marina now on Dock Street or the shore side esplanade. You have walked about 1.6 miles now and have seen a lot of downtown Tacoma restored for modern day uses. This is the last walk of my series of four. I suggest that you try Wright Park with its ducks, water play, Victorian Conservatory, huge historic trees and shady walks or the walk to the Grand Cinema with Corina Bakery and Café right next door Temptations galore! 4 Deal Allows Puget Sound Salmon Fishing to Proceed Highlights: Puyallup River to remain closed for entire season; Nisqually River will be closed in September, October; State, tribes finally reach agreement after extending talks BY JEFFREY P. MAYOR The closures below are part of efforts to reduce impacts on coho runs that are forecast to be at historic lows. Ron Warren, who led the negotiations for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, said it would be two to three weeks before fisheries could reopen. He said the department has been talking with National Marine Fisheries Service, but the federal agency must still give its approval to the agreement. Because the state did not have a deal with the tribes, nor approval of its own permit, Washington could not open its fisheries after the previous permit expired April 30. Some tribes, under a separate agreement, had already received approval from the feds to conduct fisheries in the Sound. The agreement comes about a month later than normal. Fishing season negotiations typically wrap up during April meetings held by the Pacific Fishery Management Council. Without an agreement, the state could not open recreational and nontribal commercial fisheries in the Sound and the waters that feed into it. Here are some of the details on upcoming fishing seasons, according to a release from the department: There will be no coho fisheries in marine areas of Puget Sound, except for Hood Canal, where sufficient coho are forecast to return. The Puyallup River will be closed to recreational salmon fishing this year. The Carbon River will open for 1 days, during which recreational anglers may keep up to two hatchery chinook. Warren said the state and tribes agreed to reduce fisheries in the river. Marine Area 11 (Tacoma-Vashon Island) will be closed in September and October. The area also will be closed to fishing for blackmouth (winter hatchery chinook) November through January. The area typically is closed to salmon fishing in January. Piers typically open year-round will be closed to salmon fishing during September and October, except for the piers within Sinclair Inlet, which remain open year-round. When piers are open, anglers may keep one chinook but must release all coho, except at Sinclair Inlet piers, where anglers may keep hatchery coho. The state is closing some rivers and marine areas to all salmon fishing during September and October, the peak months for coho salmon to return to Puget Sound. Among the waters to be closed are the Nisqually River and Lake Washington. Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) will be open to coho fishing north of Ayock Point starting Aug. 16 and south of the point starting July 1. Unrelated to low salmon returns, the lower mainstem of the Skokomish River will be closed to nontribal fishing this year. The Skokomish Tribe claims the river is part of the Skokomish Reservation and public access is prohibited. The state is working to evaluate that claim. The closed area includes the section of river from the Tacoma Public Utilities power lines, near the mouth of the river, upstream to the Bonneville Power Administration power lines west of U.S. Highway 101.
