This is a great time to meet and schmooze with your neighbors, nosh on delicious food and catch up on some scuttlebutt and fun. This party is potluck style, so bring a dish to share! We will hold a raffle with moorage and storage locker gift certificates to be won along with many other special prizes. In fact, they are already rolling in from our generous sponsors! For starters, a free haul-out from Commencement Bay Marine Services or $ off your next month s moorage. Any takers? We will also be awarding gifts to the 3 best decorated boats. Sign up for the boat decorating contest in the marina office. All the contestant s lighted boats will be displayed on a big screen at the party. Cocktails start at 6 pm on the 17th; you don t want to miss this, more info to come! Dock street has been experiencing a rash of criminal activity over the last few weeks that is vehicle related. A truck was stolen from our gate 8 lot and there have been some break in attempts, seemingly targeting these older trucks. We have reported the issue to Tacoma Police and other local businesses in hopes of raising awareness. If you see ANYTHING suspicious, please report it to the police. It is important to ensure that anything of value is removed from your car, even anything that looks remotely valuable should be removed to discourage any possibility of enticing would-be criminals. Again, do not hesitate to call the police if you see something that doesn t feel right. Better safe than sorry, we thank you and your neighbors will too. 1

2 Tidal Tidbits Events, happenings, and info you don t want to miss! Here are November s Tidal Tidbits: Join Foss Harbor in helping local Tacoma families in need during this holiday season. Holidays can be tough when there just isn't enough. We want to fill this box several times over! From now until Christmas, we will be collecting and donating non-perishable food items to Saint Leo Food Connection. Just bring your donation to the marina office, and we will do the rest. Here's an extra added incentive: donate a full grocery bag and get five dollars off your next months moorage charges (up to $30.00 total). Thanks everyone! Foss Harbor store and fuel dock will be CLOSED on November 24th and 25th for the Thanksgiving holiday. Warm wishes to all. Win a Thanksgiving turkey! For the next 2 Fridays, starting November 11th, we will be giving away one turkey per week to a random live-aboard resident. Reminder: As we start transitioning into colder weather, please try to keep your water tanks topped off in case we have freezing temps and need to shut the water off to the docks. Doing this helps us prevent pipes breaking. We monitor the weather and do notify everyone in advance as much as possible; being prepared will put you ahead of the game. Thank you! The lending library has some informative and fun titles these days. Our store has many options for a quick bite that you can grab and heat up in the toaster oven or microwave, maybe opt for a cold deli sandwich instead. Who knows, the choice is yours. 3 The Rule Of Twelfths By Mel Neale Tide tables tell you three important things for any given place: time of high tide, time of low tide, and heights of each. Here's how to figure out the times in between. When you need to know approximately how much water is below your boat for a particular time of day, in a particular place, and you have access to the tide tables, the "Rule of Twelfths" will serve you well. It's an easy-to-use guide for "semi-diurnal" tides, which means there are two nearly identical complete tidal cycles a day (high, low, high, low, all within approximately 24 hours). Basically, it takes about six hours for this tide to completely rise (flood) or fall (ebb). The "slack" period (when the tide is reversing directions) varies in duration depending upon your location, the stage of the moon, the force of the wind, and other factors. Slack tide may last only a few minutes or much longer, and doesn't necessarily correspond to the exact time of high and low tide. The times of high and low tides, as well as tidal heights for each day, can be determined from a number of sources, such as weather broadcasts, tide tables, navigation programs, some charts, and books such Wind can affect tides by "piling water up" in or out of a short creek, or up, down, across a broad bay. When blowing for long fetches across the ocean or bays, wind can cause deeper water along the beach, and vice versa. as Eldridge Tide and Pilot Book, published annually. If you're coastal cruising, keep a print version of the tide tables aboard for times when electricity and Internet connections are unavailable. For simplicity, let's use a 6-foot tidal range (range = difference between high and low tide heights). The range should be divided into 12 parts: 6 divided by 12 = half a foot. The tide will rise or fall one-twelfth in the first and sixth hours, two-twelfths in the second and fifth hours, and three-twelfths in the third and fourth hours. Keep in mind that all this is approximate and can be affected by phenomena such as high winds and storm surges. Also, in some parts of the world (for example, most areas of U.S. Gulf Coastal States, eastern Mexico, and some Caribbean Islands) tide cycles are "diurnal" (only one 12-hour rise and fall in each 24-hour period). Diurnal tidal areas often have weak currents with long periods of slack and little tidal range. Some areas have a mixture, where highs and lows are unequal and irregular. You will see this reflected in the tide charts. There are other exceptions where wind plays a predominant role, and depending on which way it is blowing on the water's surface, can make depths different from what you see in the tide tables. Always combine what the books say with what you observe around you. 3

Does it have outboard motor power and rest on a trailer? 75 percent of all boats stolen match this description. With the long winter lay-up period nearing, BoatUS has five tips to make your boat harder to steal. 1. Just one lock? Try another, and another. You simply can t have enough. The whole goal is to make someone else s boat more attractive than yours, so the more locks a thief sees on the trailer tongue, outboard engine, or used with chain around the trailer wheels the better the chance he ll move on. 2. Don t leave the key on a stored boat. Never assume your key s hiding place is so good that thieves won t find it. Remember, that s what these people do for a living. 3. Make the trailer impossible to move. A removable tongue hitch, or, better yet, removing the trailer tires if the boat s going into long-term storage turns your rig into 1-ton dead weight. The little things can help, too, such as not parking your boat in the driveway with the hitch facing the street. Consider using removable trailer lights with most thieves working the nightshift, they want to avoid attracting the attention an unlit trailer would cause. 4. Don t stick out. You may want to think twice about hanging a for sale sign on the side of your boat. Use a full winter cover to hide attention-getting, splashy graphics. Store all valuables, removable electronics and paperwork at home during the off-season. 5. Check out new anti-theft technologies. Devices that send alerts to your cell phone, take photos/video, provide tracking, or kill the motor if your boat moves from its virtual boundary can stop a theft in its tracks.
