IGR & 4X Products
INTRODUCTION IGR denotes Loomix products containing methoprene Methoprene is a feed through Insect Growth Regulator 4X denotes Loomix products containing Rabon * Rabon is an oral larvicide All fly control products are sold as custom products and must be mixed for the end user *Not a trademark of ADM.
THE ENEMIES!! Source: Best management Practices for Fly Control, Cattle Call, 2006, Vol. 11, Issue 2, Michigan State University
HOUSE & STABLE FLIES Live in and around buildings and feed bunks Need organic matter, manure and water to reproduce Concern for confinement Feedlots Dairies Source: Best management Practices for Fly Control, Cattle Call, 2006, Vol 11, Issue 2, Michigan State University
HORN & FACE FLIES Live and breed in pastures Need fresh undisturbed manure to reproduce Concern in pasture cattle Source: Best management Practices for Fly Control, Cattle Call, 2006, Vol 11, Issue 2, Michigan State University &
CATTLE PRODUCERS NUMBER 1 ENEMY!!!! THE HORN FLY Source: Best management Practices for Fly Control, Cattle Call, 2006, Vol 11, Issue 2, Michigan State University
ADM Alliance Nutrition
HORN FLIES REPRODUCE AT TREMENDOUS RATES Assume the season is started with a single pair of adult horn flies - you could have after eight weeks: Adult Horn Flies In Week Horn Flies Immature Stages ,728 26, ,848 1,703, ,303, ,024,000 THAT S A LOT OF FLIES!!!
WHAT CAN HORN FLIES COST? USDA estimates $1 billion of lost production!! USDA estimates the expected gain loss from ineffective horn fly control in growing cattle at lb daily or lb over a 150-day grazing season Up to 20% less milk is produced by the cow Lighter calves are weaned 13 to 14 lb lighter
FACE FLIES Face flies impact is mostly due to the spread of disease Primarily pinkeye Pinkeye is the most common disease condition in breeding females Mississippi State University estimates that pinkeye cost producers $150 million annually Source: Best management Practices for Fly Control, Cattle Call, 2006, Vol 11, Issue 2, Michigan State University, USDA APHIS NAHMS Beef 1997, & Huston, C Pinkeye in Cattle. (Publication 2608) Extension Service of Mississippi State University.
FLIES CONTROLLED Rabon IGR Horn
HORN FLY CONTROL IGR & Rabon both control adult horn fly population via their effects on the immature horn fly in the manure patty Rabon is a light dry product that takes a high level of suspending agents IGR is a liquid product and takes less suspending agents; therefore, it makes a less viscous product
Rabon FACE FLY CONTROL If IGR is used other control methods will be needed Tags, dust bags, pour-ons, or sprays Keep in mind if tags are used, make sure to alternate insecticides annually (Different manufactures can use the same insecticides) Source: Best management Practices for Fly Control, Cattle Call, 2006, Vol 11, Issue 2, Michigan State University &
RABON MODE OF ACTION Rabon Oral Larvicide contains granulated Rabon A specific size of granule is used to help it better pass through the cow and into manure Rabon kills fly larvae on contact, in the manure
RABON ORAL LARVICIDE FACTS Starts fast Manure becomes larvicidal approximately two days after consumption starts If a cow skips a day of intake, fly larvae still die Manure remains larvicidal three days after consumption stops Lasts long-enough Manure remains larvicidal for up to six weeks in pastures
IGR MODE OF ACTION IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) Methoprene mimics a juvenile hormone that prevents the horn fly pupae from developing into adults Works to break the horn fly life cycle by controlling the immature stages
ADM Alliance Nutrition
FEEDING DIRECTIONS Start providing IGR or 4X products to cattle 30 days before last hard freeze If horn flies are already present when IGR or 4X is first fed, it may take up to five weeks before there is a noticeable reduction in horn fly numbers Other fly control may be needed for that five-week period Continue feeding for 30 days after the first killing frost
WHEN DOES HORN FLY SEASON START?
FLY CONTROL FACTS Many entomologists agree that keeping horn fly numbers below the economic threshold of 200 per cow will not affect animal performance The objective is to control horn flies Keep the level of horn flies below the economic threshold, not eradicate them Horn fly control is considered excellent at 90%. A more realistic level of control is 75-80% It is not cost effective to have a goal of eradicating horn flies!
IGR FEEDING STARTED EARLY IN THE HORN FLY SEASON Fly populations per animal for untreated herd Economic Threshold IGR treated herds April May June July August *Expect greater horn fly numbers in wet seasons than dry.

MAXIMIZE FLY CONTROL EFFECTS Oral fly control forms the core of a comprehensive fly control program The use of at least one method of killing adult flies should be considered with oral control Flies can migrate from a neighboring herd or that breed in material other than manure Untreated herd may provide enough flies to cause fly populations to be above the threshold* *Campbell, J. B Horn fly control. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. G1180.
RESEARCH Effect of horn fly control on performance of yearling cattle grazing Bermuda grass 1 Item Treated Untreated % Increase P < No. of cattle Initial weight, lb Final weight, lb ADG, lb Total gain, lb Adapted from DeRouen et al This was a three-year study. 100 days on grass would equal 27 lb at $1.35/lb for a total of $36.45/ head
RESEARCH Effect of horn fly treatment on replacement heifer performance. 1 Item Treated Untreated SEM P< Initial weight, lb Final weight, lb ADG, lb Total gain, lb Pregnancy rate 75% 78% ADG bred, lb ADG open, lb Adapted from DeRouen et al. 2003; three-year study over five locations. Fly treatment had a greater effect on ADG for open heifers than bred heifers, making them more valuable at sale.
RESEARCH Effect of treating beef cows for horn flies on steer weaning weights. 1 Item 2 Treated Untreated Weaning weight, lb 387 a 374 b Horn flies per cow Adapted from Campbell Means with in a row with different superscripts differ (P < 0.05) per lb would be $20.80 per steer weaned.
PRODUCT INFORMATION Bitter, Sweet, HF and Custom products are currently setup as IGR and 4X products PBF med code denotes 0.429% of 1% methoprene 0.75 lb for a 1300-lb cow 0.40 lb for a 700-lb steer POI med code denotes 0.276% of 97.3% Rabon 0.75 lb for a 1300-lb cow 0.41 lb for a 700-lb steer PNS med code denotes 0.125% of 97.3% Rabon 1.66 lb for a 1300-lb cow 0.90 lb for a 700-lb steer
IGR & RABON FACTS No effect on soils or plants Will not hurt beneficial insects No withdrawal for meat or milk
TAKE HOME MESSAGE USDA estimates the horn fly will cost producers an estimated $1 billion in lost production yearly It s fly control not fly eradication! If fly population exceed the 200 flies/per animal, fly control can have a good return on investment
