The entire set of 4 maps, which at the time I checked, was cheaper than buying the 3 maps individually that is needed for this course or buying the maps separately. If you buy the Literature Pack the maps come with the pack. Even though the Pack contains Seabird, which we are not using, I suspect that the Pack is cheaper than individual piece buying. A map matching each of the book titles above are needed for the class. The maps are on the website at bfbooks.com/ Map Set 24 set of colored pencils (I recommend Prismacolor or another high quality pencil) Pencil sharpener scissors 3 ring binder (1 inch size) 2 Notebook dividers with pockets Card stock paper (pack of 100) Glue sticks (many) Extra fine point marker Pen Bar of Ivory soap Butter knife Student Resource Notebook available from Institute for Excellence in Writing If you have purchased any writing curriculum from, you likely have an electronic version of this book on your website account. Paddle to the Sea Prior to Week 1 read chapters 1, 2, and 3 of Paddle to the Sea. Week Chapters 1, 2, 3 Class topics: Geese, Potato chip bag boats/ballast, Creative Interactive Notebooks (CIN) 1. On the map, label and color Lake Nipigon. Use the map at the back of the book as a reference. 2. Draw a small log cabin on the east side of Lake Nipigon. Draw snow capped mountains around the lake too.

2 3. Label and color Canada. Be sure to include the Canadian border above Maine. 4. Read chapters 4, 5, 6 Class topics: Key word outline, use of symbols 1. Key word outline, just as we did in class, paragraph 2 of chapter 4. Choose only 3 key words from each sentence. Do a Tell Back with a parent. Do NOT write this paragraph. Week Chapters 4, 5, 6 Class Topics: Nipigon, Great Lakes drainage, soap carving 1. On the map, draw a tiny red sawmill on the west side of Lake Nipigon. Mark the location of the sawmill in red. 2. Read chapters 7,8,9,10 Class topics: strong verbs, quality adjectives, banned words, use of an editor 1. Complete the rough draft you began in class of chapter 10/paragraph 4 Life in a Northern March. 5. Turn in your finished copy, along with your rough draft and checklist, to me on Week 3. Staple ALL pages together. Week Chapters 7,8,9,10 Class Topics: Map topics, Biomes, Lake Superior 1. On the map, color and label Lake Superior, Isle Royal, and Port Arthur. 2. On the map, label and color the St. Lawrence River, Lake Champlain, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine,the Gulf of St.Lawrence, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Read chapters 26,27 Class topics: no homework to turn in, introduce Title/Clincher 1. Complete the Story outline that you began in class. Be sure to answer the Story Sequence Chart questions in a key word format. 2. Tell Back the story to a parent. Parents: Did your student communicate the essential story elements? Week Chapters 26,27 Class topics: Currents of the World 1. On the map label and color New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. 2. On the map label the capitals of the states listed in #1. 3. Trace the route Paddle took to the sea. Narrate the story using your map. 4. Read chapters 1,2, and 3 of Tree in the Trail. Class Topics: review of any needed information NONE Tree in the Trail Week Chapters 1,2, and 3 Class topics: Cottonwood tree, Coronado, the horse 1. On the map label and color the Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi and Rio Grande rivers. 2. On the map label Santa Fe. 3. Read chapters 4 and 5. Class topics: No homework to turn in, continue mastering the Narrative Story, introduce the who/which clause 1. Finish the Story Sequence outline that we began in class on chapter 3/par. 1 5 Arrows and Spears.
