About Finns West Finns West provides Wilderness First Aid training and medical consulting for individuals, guides, outfitters and lodges in the angling community.

3 About Finns West Finns West provides Wilderness First Aid training and medical consulting for individuals, guides, outfitters and lodges in the angling community. Almost two decades ago we started Katabatic Consulting and Katabatic Mountain School to provide remote medical support, consulting and training for companies and individuals operating in remote environments. Finns West is our angling division. As fly fishing guides and avid anglers, we noticed the limited training opportunities for guides and outfitters as well as individuals seeking further first aid training that was more appropriate for the environments they worked and played in. We took our current wilderness first aid curriculum and tailored it to accommodate the real scenario s anglers, guides, outfitters and lodges may face in their environment. As fellow guides and anglers, we understand the working environment you operate and play in. As medical professionals and educators, we understand what you need to be prepared for an emergency, illness or injury in the field. Our team has provided training and services for individuals, fly shops, outfitters, guides and destination lodges from Alaska to Patagonia and from Guyana to the Bahamas. 1 finnswest@gmail.com

4 Courses Finns West offers Wilderness First Aid courses appropriate for the environment anglers work and play in. Our courses range from one day to 7 days, depending on our clients requirements. Each course focuses on patient assessment, management of life threatening emergencies and common injuries and illnesses. Our Courses focus on the management of these issues when emergency care will be delayed due to distance or the environment. Standard first aid courses are designed based on rapid 911 response and may not be appropriate for individuals operating in locations not easily accessed by 911 or where emergency care will be delayed. We utilize evidence based medicine and hands-on training scenarios to better educate and prepare our participants for emergencies in the field. By combining our medical expertise with our guiding profession we are able to identify and create medical scenarios most likely encountered by folks who work and play in the environments associated with fly fishing. 2 finnswest@gmail.com

5 Freestone First Aid 6 hour class or 8 hour class with AHA Adult CPR The Freestone First Aid course was designed specifically for fly fishing outfitters and guides as well as for individuals who want a little more confidence in their first aid skills. We wanted to create a 1-day course that was comparable in length and cost to a basic first aid course but focused on the wilderness scenarios that we may face as anglers. This is our most popular course for guides and individuals taking day trips or who may have access to reasonable 911 response. The course curriculum was built from Katabatic Mountain School s core Wilderness Medicine Program and exceeds the first aid requirements for the majority of the agencies issuing outfitter / guide licenses. The core of the Freestone First Aid course is first aid in the wilderness / remote environment focusing on Quick Patient Assessment; Life Threats, Common Medical Emergencies, Environmental Emergencies, Splinting, Critical Thinking Skills and Hands on Skills. 3 finnswest@gmail.com

Introduction to general wilderness medicine concepts, patient assessment and basic life support skills are the foundation for the WFA course. Topics and skills in the Wilderness First Aid course include: Circulatory, Respiratory and Nervous System review; Musculoskeletal injuries and splinting; Allergy / Anaphylaxis, Spinal injuries, Wound / Burn care; Environmental emergencies, Water based emergencies; Backcountry medicine and First aid kits. Wilderness Guidelines include: Advanced Wound Care and Anaphylaxis skills labs. 7 Custom and Additional Courses As well as our popular Freestone First Aid and Wilderness First Aid courses, we offer more advanced wilderness medicine courses such as our 70 hour Wilderness First Responder. As this is a very time intensive (but awesome) course, we do not typically get requests for this by the angling community unless the outfitter is operating in very remote locations. With that being said, if your group is interested in a more advanced wilderness medicine course, please do not hesitate to drop us a line and we can chat about it. We also offer custom wilderness medicine courses for specific topics, environments or specialties that may be required for your endeavors. Guide Series First Aid Kits Our kits are light, lean, rugged, and have quality contents (not just bandaids) to handle a wide range of emergencies. The kits are the Guide I and Guide II.

The internal organization is a unique and proprietary modular system. Each module is color coded for the kind of response that you are faced with.

8 Guide Series First Aid Kits Our kits are light, lean, rugged, and have quality contents (not just bandaids) to handle a wide range of emergencies. The kits are the Guide I and Guide II. Both kits are built with the same materials that we use in our EMS and rescue products, including Diamond Ripstop and waterproof zippers. The internal organization is a unique and proprietary modular system. Each module is color coded for the kind of response that you are faced with. The green module is for routine medical issues (cuts blisters etc), and the red module is for major issues (severe bleeding cardiac emergencies etc). The modules themselves are made with heavy recloseable seethrough pockets that are completely water tight, so even if your pack takes a dunk, your important medical supplies will stay safe.

The lack of immediate medical care requires a well thought out medical plan that includes appropriate training, first aid kits and an evacuation plan to definitive care. We have found that medical plans in our industry are often inadequate due to the lack of available resources and information for outfitters and lodges catering to clients in austere environments. Finns West has developed a simple, comprehensive program to prepare lodges and outfitters in the event of an emergency situation. Finns West can provide a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan to include first aid training and first aid supply recommendations that is tailored to your operation and environment. 11 Speaking Opportunities Are you looking for a new and informative presentation topic for your next expo or fly shop event? Finns West has developed a lecture series on the Considerations of Wilderness First Aid for the individual, guide, outfitter or destination lodge. The focus of our presentations is real wilderness first aid considerations for a day on the river or a week at a remote fly fishing lodge. Our presentations are based on over 20 years of experience providing remote medical services and guiding in the environments we work and play in. A basic first aid class or an article in a magazine is great but may not be appropriate for fly fishers where help could be delayed in the event of an emergency. Our Freestone First Aid: Considerations for the Fly Fisher presentation covers topics such as: Appropriate First Aid Courses, First Aid Kit Considerations and Medical Considerations for the Traveling Angler; to name a few.
