At the commencement of this course, you can expect to have received all the tools, training, and skills necessary to pass both your NREMT and LEMSA EMT- B certification exams. The Faculty and Staff of OMS will do their best to prepare you for these examinations and provide a focused and thorough curriculum emphasizing the hands on skills necessary to apply your EMS knowledge and training in the field as a competent Emergency Medical Technician. THIS COURSE WILL REQUIRE WORK! Simply attending lectures and laboratory sessions DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOUR CERTIFICATION! Class Times: TR/F from 06:00p 10:00p* (Exceptions are listed on syllabus) Lab Times: W/Su 09:00a 06:00p** (Exceptions are listed on syllabus) Lunch Time for Labs: 12:00p- 12:30p Office Hours: Fridays 4p-6p (Minimum of 3 OH s is required for course completion) Attendance: MANDATORY! Absences: Each student is allowed ONE excused absence for both ONE lab and ONE lecture. Each student must receive prior approval of such absence from the Primary Instructor responsible for the missed material. It is in the Primary Instructor/Program Director s discretion as to what actions MUST be taken by the student to satisfy the OMS Course Requirements for earning a Satisfactory Pass. Any missed quiz CANNOT be made up; regardless of excused/not excused absence. Any student who misses MORE than the aforementioned excused absences will receive a NO PASS for this course and NOT receive a Certificate of Completion. OMS Course Requirements: Current CPR certification CPR training equivalent to the American Heart Association s Guidelines 2005 for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care at the Healthcare Provider level is a prerequisite for admission to the OMS, Inc. EMT Basic Training Program. Grades: Each student must complete the course with a quiz average of 80% and a final examination score greater than or equal to 80%. Each student must attend all 16 lectures (64 hours) and all 11 labs (97.5 hours). Students can miss ONE lecture and ONE lab ONLY if the Primary Instructor/Program Director approves the absence and the appropriate actions are taken to make up the absence. Tardiness will exempt the student from taking a quiz which is usually given at the beginning of the class or lab. Whether you are absent or tardy, NO QUIZZES CAN BE MADE UP! All grades will be available online through Engrade. The website and password will be ed to you after

Clinical Rotations/Background Checks and TB test: In order to satisfy the requirements of the NREMT as well as local emergency services agencies, a student must complete a minimum of 24 Clinical hours, including a minimum of 10 Patient Contact hours, pursuant to the EMT Training provisions of the Emergency Medical Service System and Prehospital Medical Care Personnel Act and the California Code of Regulations, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 2, Article 3, Section , and Each student will be required to complete a background check and produce a recent TB test (within the last 6 months) prior to participating in any clinical rotations. Students will be asked to produce proof of current immunizations. Exams: 15 Quizzes* x 15 questions (1 point/question) = 225 points (80% required) 20 Lab Quizlets* x 5 questions (1 point/questions) = 100 points (80% required) Final Exam x 100 questions (1 point/question) = 100 points (80% required) Skills Examination = P/NP (P =Satisfactory Performance) Scenario Examination = P/NP (P=Satisfactory Performance) *The lowest Lecture Quiz, AM Lab Quizlet and PM Lab Quizlet will be dropped. Satisfactory Performance in the following skills MUST be demonstrated: a. Patient examination, trauma patient f. Circulation emergencies b. Patient examination, medical patient g. Neurological emergencies c. Airway emergencies h. soft tissue injury d. Breathing emergencies i. musculoskeletal injury e. Automated external defibrillation j. obstetrical emergencies Lab Checklists Each lab will have an accompanying checklist that must be completed and turned in at the end of the lab. There will be no points assigned to these in class assignments; however, failure to complete at least 10/11 of the required checklists would result in a NO PASS. The Lab Coordinator will collect all lists at the END of EACH LAB. Uniform and Equipment: All OMS EMT B Students will be required to attend lectures, labs, and clinical rotations in uniform. OMS EMT B Student Uniform will consist of an OMS EMT B Student T shirt, dark blue work pants, black non-athletic shoes or boots, and a wristwatch. Each student will be required to bring his/her stethoscope and BP cuff to all lectures and labs as they may be called upon to demonstrate associated skills at any time. OMS will provide these items by the second class meeting. Student Login: OMSstudent StudentPassword: emtcourseatoms Quality Control: OMS Faculty and Staff reserve the right to withhold issuing an OMS EMT B Course Completion Certification to any student who does not meet the minimum requirements listed above and who, in the opinion of the Program Director, Faculty Instructors, OMS Board of Medical Directors, and Teaching Assistants, has failed to demonstrate the skills/knowledge necessary to aptly perform the duties of an Emergency Medical Technician Basic. Any OMS Student, while in lecture, lab, clinical rotations, and or representing this course while in uniform shall be held to the same standards as an employee of OMS. Emergency Medical Services is a profession of compassion, respect, and integrity failure to treat your fellow students, OMS Faculty and Staff, or those you encounter during your clinical rotations with these basic courtesies will result in an IMMEDIATE EXPULSION from this course without refund/certificate of Completion.
