41 Getting the right supplies for your school is easy First aid supplies in your school A defibrillator could save a life in your school Fire safety supplies Health and safety supplies FIRE SAFETY In addition to having enough staff members trained to know what to do about preventing fire and dealing with fires if they occur, your school needs to be equipped with the right fire safety supplies. There are also some other key health and safety supplies that you will need in your school. THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT IN THE RIGHT PLACES You should carry out a fire risk assessment for all areas of your school premises. Different causes of fire require different types of fire extinguisher to combat them safely. In considering the fire risks in each area, you can determine which type of extinguisher is most appropriate. In addition to having the right types of fire extinguisher located around your school, you should consider where a fire blanket is more appropriate, for example in kitchen areas where there s a risk of fire from cooking oil. Fire extinguisher Water Foam Dry powder Specialist powder CO 2 gas Class A: Fires involving freely burning materials (e.g.. wood, paper, textiles and other carbon-based materials) Class B: Fires involving flammable liquids (e.g.. petrol and spirits). NOT alcohol or cooking oil Class C: Fires involving flammable gases (e.g.. butane and propane) Class D: Fires involving flammable metals (e.g.. magnesium and lithium) EQUIPPING YOUR SCHOOL WITH THE RIGHT Class E: Fires involving electrical equipment (e.g.. photocopiers, televisions and computers) Wet chemical Class F: Fires involving cooking oil and fat (e.g.. sunflower oil, olive oil, lard and butter) schools@sja.org.uk visit: sja.org.uk/firesafetyproducts

St John Ambulance only supplies fire extinguishers that meet the highest standards in accordance with BS EN 3. Look for the relevant kite marks on all your fire safety equipment. Visit sja.org.uk/firesafetyproducts Health and safety signs in your school It s essential that emergency exits in your school are clearly signed, ideally with photoluminescent signs that are visible in the dark. You should also consider signs to mark the location of important things like first aid kits or stations and fire alarms and extinguishers. Visit sja.org.uk/signs Fire escape keep clear F (excluding VAT) Fire safety poster P (excluding VAT) Safe evacuation in an emergency The most important thing in a fire emergency or any emergency evacuation is that everyone in the school can get outside to the designated safe assembly point promptly and safely. For the mobilityimpaired, such as those with disabilities or those suffering from injury or illness, getting down stairs in an emergency can require a dedicated evacuation chair and it s strongly recommended that your school is equipped with evacuation chairs to assist all those who might need one in an emergency. Visit sja.org.uk/evacuationchair Posters and publications for your school As for all workplaces, the law requires you to have a Health and Safety Law poster clearly on display so all staff members can see it. You might also want to have posters for key first aid and fire safety procedures on display. You will also need an Accident book to record incidents of employee injuries. It s a very good idea to keep an up-todate copy of the official First Aid Manual in your first aid room too. Visit sja.org.uk/publications schools@sja.org.uk visit: sja.org.uk/shop
