4 Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation guide It is the employer s legal duty to ensure that if a member of staff takes ill or is injured at work, immediate care and attention is provided. The Health and Safety First Aid Regulations 1981, as amended in 2013, detail the responsibilities and provisions that employers have regarding first aid in the workplace. Needs assessment Employers should carry out a first aid needs assessment taking into account potential hazards and risks within the workplace. The following points should be considered when conducting a first aid needs assessment: The nature of the work, workplace hazards and risks. The nature of the workforce. The organisation s history of accidents. The size of the organisation. The needs of travelling, remote and lone workers. Work patterns. The distribution of the workforce. The remoteness of the site from emergency medical services. Employees working in shared or multioccupied sites. Annual leave and other absences of First Aiders and appointed persons. First aid provision for non-employees. A free-to-use online calculator is available on our website at This calculator will guide you through your workplace first aid needs assessment and detail your requirements. Due diligence The amendment to The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations means that HSE no longer approves training providers to deliver workplace first aid qualifications. It is now an employer s responsibility to carry out a first aid needs assessment as well as a due diligence check to ensure that a training provider meets all quality assurance requirements. This due diligence exercise requires you to show that the chosen training provider have: The qualifications expected of Trainers and Assessors Monitoring and quality assurance systems Syllabus content Certification St Andrew s First Aid Training and Supplies Ltd is cited as a standard setter in first aid by the HSE. By training with us you are ensuring that your First Aiders are trained to the highest standard. Additional training After undertaking a first aid needs assessment, there may be a requirement for additional training or equipment to provide support to employees who have underlying health conditions e.g. a peanut allergy. Sending an employee onto an Anaphylaxis Awareness course will give them the extra knowledge required to provide immediate assistance to a colleague should they suffer an anaphylactic reaction and also to advise on preventative measures to colleagues. There may also be employees who come into the in the at risk category for heart problems due to age or underlying conditions such as high blood pressure. Each of our first aid courses contain a familiarisation session with an AED which includes: What is an AED? How to attach AED pads to a casualty How to follow AED prompts With ambulance response times averaging five and a half minutes, every second counts when it comes to resuscitating someone who has had a cardiac arrest. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) enhance the chances of survival by up to 70% if used within three minutes of a cardiac arrest. More employers are becoming aware of the benefits of having these life-saving machines readily available within their workplace. 7 8

15 Workplace training courses The importance of having a defibrillator Defibrillators in the workplace Installing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the workplace helps to protect your workforce as well as members of the public visiting your business premises. No barriers should be put in the way of anyone using an AED when it is needed. In the workplace, it is important that all employees know where the device is located and know how to raise the alarm in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. Defibrillators in schools Having defibrillators on school premises cannot only save a life, but can educate pupils and staff on the importance of first aid and how to use a defibrillator. By preparing young people to deal with a cardiac arrest and use an AED, it can help to increase survival rates for those who suffer an out of hospital cardiac arrest. Defibrillators in sports clubs and local communities Although exercise is great for your overall heart health, those who are fit and healthy are just as likely to suffer from a cardiac arrest as someone who does no exercise. Strenuous activity or a blow to the chest can trigger a cardiac arrest making it equally as important to have AEDs within sports clubs as it would be any other location. Having a defibrillator within local communities helps to improve the chance of survival of those around you, as the first few minutes after a cardiac arrest are vital which is often before an ambulance will arrive. Many defibrillators have an eight year warranty meaning that a defibrillator could cost you as little as 28 pence per day. Find out more To see our range of defibrillators visit or call our sales team on

16 Saving a life can be easier than you think Self-monitoring means you re emergency ready AEDs are effective only if they are close at hand and ready to work. Whether you have one AED or 100, now you can know the readiness status and location of each one. Ongoing system maintenance has been time-consuming and error-prone until now. The LIFELINKcentral AED Program Manager monitors each CR2 connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network and alerts you to anything that may affect device readiness all automatically. Battery not charged? AED not where it s supposed to be? You ll receive an alert through the LIFELINKcentral program manager, helping to greatly reduce the effort and expense of managing your AED program, while increasing your program s readiness and effectiveness. Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death globally with around 350,000 victims in Europe each year. AEDs can help save many of those lives however the mere installation of lifesaving devices is not enough. An AED Program needs to be in place to ensure the readiness of devices and staff members, together with the easy connection with the local ambulance service

25 Online first aid courses Online first aid courses 50% of Scottish adults have received no first aid training. Our online first aid courses offer an easy way to familiarise yourself with basic life-saving skills at a time and place that suits you. Each of the online courses are based on international standards, conforming to the current European Resuscitation Council guidelines and is also approved by St Andrew s First Aid s Medical and First Aid Committee. Who is the training for? Our online first aid training courses are designed for the public, those in the workplace and in medical professions. Currently, the online first aid training courses available are as follows: Baby & Child Life-saving Skills Adult Life-saving Skills Paediatric Basic Life Support (PBLS) in Hospital Basic Life Support in Hospital Course details This unique approach to first aid training is delivered via information slides, videos, multiple choice questions and real time simulations. Before completing the course, the candidate must partake in a theory test and then an interactive scenario to confirm the first aid skills they have learnt. All course content is available for 12 months after purchase to accommodate those with time constraints or provide a library of first aid theory to prevent skills fade. Having successfully completed the course, the candidate is presented with a downloadable certificate of completion in line with St Andrew s First Aid guidelines. Although an online course is not a suitable replacement for First Aid at Work training, having various staff members aware of how to administer first aid can be life-saving. You can purchase our courses online at or for bulk buy purchasing options please sales@firstaid.org.uk I have just completed the Baby and Child Life-saving Skills course which St Andrew s First Aid Training and Supplies Ltd provide online. As a mother of three young children I regret not having completed it sooner. It literally could be a life saver. We all have those heart in mouth moments and to my shame it has taken me too long to learn these basic skills. The course itself is very well thought out and easy to follow. The training videos are clear and easy to understand. Everyone with children or grandchildren should take this course. Well worth the money. Emma Stewart Glasgow 49 50

31 Automatic External Defibrillators Do you have a life-saving Automated External Defibrillator? (AED) A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are safe to use by anyone trained or untrained and will not allow a shock to be delivered to a casualty unless required. A sudden cardiac arrest is a medical emergency, occurring when someone s heart stops pumping blood around the body, they stop breathing and become unresponsive. Unless emergency treatment is provided quickly, the chance of survival decreases rapidly. Over 3,500 people in Scotland each year are treated by the Ambulance Service for an out of hospital cardiac arrest. This is equal to 70 people per week. The median response time in Scotland for a cardiac related (Immediately Life Threatening) 999 call is currently 5.44 minutes. Is your organisation prepared? We sell a range of different defibrillators from the world s top suppliers, catering for all price points. Our sales team are trained to advise you on which device is most suitable for your needs. They can be contacted by calling or ing sales@firstaid.org.uk Our workplace first aid training courses provide all candidates with a general overview of how an AED operates. We also offer a 3 hour AED training course designed for those who wish to gain a greater understanding of how to use an AED which can be found in many public areas and workplaces. 32 St Andrew s First Aid St Andrew s First Aid is Scotland s only dedicated first aid charity and our mission is to provide everyone in the country with the highest standards in first aid skills, services and volunteering opportunities. We believe that no-one should suffer or die because they needed first aid and didn t get it. Our network of volunteers work across Scotland to provide the highest standards in first aid at events across the country. They also provide first aid talks and demonstrations to community groups in their local area and campaign to increase first aid knowledge and skills in schools. From 2015 until 2020 St Andrew s First Aid s aim, and challenge, is to demonstrate CPR to 10,000 Scots in order to help Scotland become a safer an more resilient country. Since 2015 we have given free demonstrations on CPR to over 6,000 members of the public and are well on the way to beating our intended goal. Events By choosing to book first aid event cover with St Andrew s First Aid, you are supporting Scotland s leading first aid charity. The money received from providing event cover helps us to equip and train our volunteers. It also enables us to provide talks, demonstrations, and training in schools and communities in Scotland, especially for those who would not normally have access to first aid education. We were delighted to supply first aid cover at the 2018 European Championships. To book our team of volunteers visit

33 Fundraising Charitable donations are absolutely vital to St Andrew s First Aid because they allow us to continue our life-saving work, and teach more people first aid skills. In Scotland if you have an out of hospital cardiac arrest, there is only a one in twelve chance you will survive. St Andrew s First Aid wants to turn this shocking statistic around but we can only do this with your help. We want to teach more people across Scotland the skills and knowledge to not only help themselves but help others too when they need it most. Building a nation of life-savers It costs 60 per month It costs 120 to put a St Andrew s first aid volunteer through our 12 month leadership programme giving them the chance to learn new skills and fulfil their potential. for a first aid trainer to provide life-saving skills to a class of 30 children. In Scotland first aid is not part of the school curriculum. It costs 2,000 It costs 35,000 to train, equip and retain a first aid volunteer in the field. Last year our volunteers provided first aid cover at over 2,000 events and gave up 66,733 hours of their own time to ensure safety at events across Scotland. to purchase a specially designed mobile first aid treatment vehicle. These vehicles are essential at large scale events. It costs 1,000 to purchase an automatic external defibrillator. The use of a defibrillator in the first three minutes of a cardiac arrest increases the chances of survival by over 70%. It costs 1,500 It costs 35,000 to train and equip a first aid volunteer to be a member of our rapid response cycle team. Using a cycle team at an event such as a marathon allows First Aiders to reach those injured quickly and across a larger area. to train 90, 3rd year pupils in certified first aid through our BandAge project which has been running in deprived areas of Glasgow since Together we can save lives. Donations Any donation no matter how big or small benefits communities across Scotland and will help to create a nation of life-savers who will be there for someone when they need it most. To support our life-saving work, please visit and together we can save lives

34 The Scottish First Aid Awards for businesses The Scottish First Aid Awards were created to recognise individuals, volunteers, businesses and the emergency services, who are leading the way in first aid in Scotland. Every year we celebrate those people and organisations who have made the difference between a life lost and a life saved and by sharing their inspiring stories, we can make as many people as possible aware of the importance of basic first aid. There are two specific award categories which recognise businesses and organisations across Scotland which have invested in first aid awareness, equipment and training of staff. They are: - Large Organisation of the Year for First Aid Excellence (50 of more employees) - Small Organisation of the Year for First Aid Excellence (less than 50 employees) Sponsorship opportunities We also have a number of exciting sponsorship opportunities available; if you would like to become one of our sponsors and support Scotland s first aid heroes then please contact: awards@firstaid.org.uk To nominate, sponsor or book a table visit: or awards@firstaid.org.uk Nominations for the awards are completely free; the event itself attracts businesses from across Scotland.
