8 MEET THE EXPERTS DELIVERY COORDINATOR Name: Yvonne Dormer I became a St John Ambulance trainer 23 years ago and now line-manage a team of trainers in the region. It s a delivery coordinators job to ensure we always train to the highest standards. Businesses often require bespoke on-site training solutions and it s my job to create courses to meet their exact requirements. I love to watch our trainers grow and develop their skills and knowing I am working for an organisation that makes a difference to people s lives is the best part of my job. RESOURCE COORDINATOR Name: Leah Rawle It s my job to look after the logistics of our training services to ensure that all of our courses are organised efficiently. I m lucky that I can travel all over the region to our many training venues to make sure everything is in place and ready for our customers. I love the variety of my day-to-day work and being part of a great team.

9 MEET THE EXPERTS TRAINER Name: Winston Marshall I got into first aid 30 years ago when I was working in construction and was asked to become a first aider. Soon after that, I joined St John Ambulance as a volunteer, before qualifying as a professional trainer. I suppose you could say I haven t looked back. I m passionate about first aid and about teaching life saving skills to other people, and so I love what I do I know I m really lucky to be able to say that. TRAINER Name: Sinead Trinnaman It s my job to make sure students get the most out of their course and to make it enjoyable for them. The most important thing for me is to make sure first aiders feel confident in their new skills. I love teaching people to save lives. I m also a scuba diving instructor and as part of that job I had to become a first aid trainer. When I took the First aid at work course, I found out St John Ambulance was hiring. I jumped at the chance to apply and do something I m passionate about as a full-time job.

These include the layout of your premises, the make-up of your workforce and your work practices and processes. ANNUAL REFRESHER ANNUAL REFRESHER 1/2 1 DAY COURSE EVERY MONTH FREE WITH FIRST AID AT WORK RECOMMENDED FOR ALL FIRST AIDERS Employers are legally required to ensure their first aiders are competent and maintain their skills throughout the three years in which their certificates are valid. This three-hour course provides first aiders with an opportunity to practise and update their skills at any time while their first aid certificate is valid. This course does not renew first aid certificates or extend the validity period of certificates. It meets the standards required by Ofsted. PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS FIRST AID PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS FIRST AID RECOMMENDED 1 DAY FOR ALL LGV OR PCV DRIVERS This seven-hour course is approved by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT) to meet Driver CPC training requirements for professional drivers of large goods vehicles and passenger carrying vehicles. AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION (AED) AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION (AED) 3 1 HOURS COURSE EVERY MONTH RECOMMENDED ONSITE GROUP TRAINING For each minute that passes without defibrillation after the heart stops, the casualty s chance of survival falls by about 14%*. Defibrillators are very simple to operate, and no previous first aid training is required. This three-hour course gives people the confidence to act quickly and effectively in an emergency. Crucially, this course will teach your defibrillator operators how to perform effective CPR. ANAPHYLAXIS FIRST AID 1/2 DAY ANAPHYLAXIS FIRST AID Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can kill without immediate first aid. The UK is one of the top three countries in the world for incidence of allergies. An estimated 21 million adults suffer from at least one allergy and six to eight per cent of children have a proven food allergy. This course, approved by Allergy UK, is for anyone who needs training in how and when to use an auto-injector in the treatment of anaphylaxis. 24 FIRE SAFETY TRAINING IDENTIFYING YOUR FIRE SAFETY TRAINING NEEDS IDENTIFYING YOUR FIRE SAFETY TRAINING NEEDS Fire safety training The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person for the premises to carry out a fire risk assessment and nominate a sufficient number of competent persons (fire marshals) to assist in implementing emergency procedures such as safely evacuating the premises. The number of fire marshals will depend on the size, layout and shift patterns of your workplace. FIRE MARSHAL FIRE MARSHAL 1/2 1 DAY COURSE EVERY FORTNIGHT ESSENTIAL FOR ALL WORKPLACES Approved training provider by the Institution of Fire Engineers This four-hour course covers the prevention of fire. It also provides an understanding of different types of fire extinguisher and practical training for correct use. 27 HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING MANAGING HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK MANAGING HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK Your workplace risk assessment As an employer, you should conduct regular risk assessments to identify all the hazards associated with your workplace, work processes and your employees. A risk assessment will help you to identify the measures you need to put in place to safeguard your staff, including what training is required. You should carry out a risk assessment at least every 12 months and reassess your needs if there are any changes in personnel, processes or your premises.
