FIRST AID TRAINING REPORT For CHILDREN S WORLD LTD via Safaricom Ltd TRAINING PERIOD:MAY 2014 &APRIL 2015 In the Service to Humanity SCHOOL OF FIRST AID AND SAFETY ST JOHN KENYA P.O. Box , Nairobi Tel: /74/83 training@stjohnkenya.org 08/9/2014
Contact Person: Steve Mbugua Kamau Training Manager ABOUT ST JOHN St John Ambulance is a non-profit registered charity (Cap 259 of Kenya Laws), working with families, communities and business partners to reduce the number and severity of crashes and injuries on Kenyan roads as well as workplace and residential homes. St. John Kenya provides First Aid training courses in full compliance with the prevailing workplace safety laws of the country. As a workplace training service provider, we are duly registered by the Directorate of Industrial Training vide DIT/TRN/465.Our services include first aid and safety training, ambulance services, youth development programs, community health, and sale of safety products.st John Ambulance has been training various government departments, private and public organizations for 84 years, and has expanded rapidly because of our high quality and reliable training practices. Our interactive and fun filled training entices, registering trainees and easily converts them to real emergency rescuers at work place. St John ambulance provides medical relief during disasters and emergencies as well as promotes the healthcare of vulnerable people and communities. In the previous years, an astounding 1,923 victims of accident and disasters were rescued annually. TRAINING OVERVIEW The training took place at Safaricom House westlands and Call center Mlolongo in Nairobi. A total of about 200 participants were successfully trained. The methodology used during the training process included short lectures, illustrations/practical, and question and answer methods and simulations.
Purpose of the Training Our core training purpose is to equip individuals and other members of the society with internationally certified course that not only builds their confidence to save lives, but are generally regarded as being obligatory in respect of Health and Safety regulation compliance (OSHA and DOSH). It is also part of building the necessary national capacity to meet medical emergency at the local levels. Trainers 1. Steve Mbugua 2. Allan Kahungu Course contents Introduction to First Aid Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) Communication and delegation in emergency(amega) Initial Assessment (ABC) Basic Life Support Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation(CPR) Wounds and Control of Bleeding Treatment of the Unconscious Casualty Poisoning Shock and Fainting Disorders of the Airway and Breathing (Asthma, Choking, Coup, Drowning, massive allergic reaction) Disorders of Circulation (Internal bleeding, External bleeding, Fainting, Shock, Heart attack) Injuries to Bones and Muscles (Fractures, Dislocations, Sprains and Strains) Head and Spinal Injuries and brain illness(epilepsy, stroke and diabetes included) Communication and Reporting Any Other Issue Requested by the participants affecting infants and children.
Achievements During the training, the participants appreciated the realization of; 1. The importance of First aid 2. Personal safety; that individual safety is paramount hence it is always critical to carry out hand washing, use of disposable gloves, use of face shield or masks and immunization. 3. Communication-keep reassuring the casualty while administering first aid, inform bystanders including casualty members and seeking assistance from the emergency services. 4. Reporting-using the casualty report form which enables you monitor the casualty s condition and keep in touch with the emergency services. 5. Educate participants on managing emergency equipments and materials Results All the participants enjoyed the whole session and participated actively. Challenges Experienced 1. Training Period was too short for the basic skills to be fully disseminated i.e most of them felt they need more than a day for a thorough training. Lessons learnt 1. There were many myths and superstitions that surrounded many common illnesses facing children, the aged and other medical conditions e.g. epilepsy that was seen to be more of a curse that were fortunately cleared during the course of the training. 2. Many or all of the participants claimed that their bosses have not installed fire extinguishers or first aid kits at home. 3. Issues were raised on the challenges faced by majority of the participants during their day to day operations basically lifting of weights, minor cuts, fever for kids etc.
Recommendations For effective, efficient and for the trainees to gain hands on experience, the following recommendations were made: That the first aid training be extended to a minimum of one day to enable the participants get a thorough training and all the necessary lifesaving skills. The house managers/nannies be provided with learning aids/referrals like First aid and fire safety charts which they can always refer to incase of any incident at home. The employers to provide emergency numbers to the house managers/nannies and emergency evacuation plan for the home. Conclusion On behalf of St John Ambulance, we greatly appreciate Safaricom Ltd and Madam Wanjiru Mbogori for the partnership in disseminating health and safety knowledge at the work place and at home. We look forward to further engagements in emergency trainings, awareness and other events and activities. THANK YOU.
