1 Juggling Progressions for all ages Presented by: Susan Sellers, M.S, NBCT, TOY
2 Introduction: Our students participate in physical education two times each week. I have organized my progression into a 3-week lesson plan with six lessons for each developmental level of Beginner, Progressing, Proficient and Exceptional. These developmentally appropriate levels coincide with our 4-point grading rubric. GRADES K-2 Week 1 Lesson 1 Single scarf skills (toss/catch R, toss/catch L, toss R/catch L, etc.) Two scarf tossing and passing patterns (R t/c, Lt/c, both t/c, X t/c, toss across, toss across, catch, catch) Introduce 2-in-1 pattern (use both R and L hands) CLOSING ACTIVITY: 2 scarf Rhythms (each student takes a turn making up a pattern for the rest of the class to follow for a 15 sec. interval) Week 1 Lesson 2 Review single scarf and 2-in-1 Introduce Elevators (three scarves, one up the middle/two up the sides) Introduce 1, 2, and 3 and 4 scarf passing CLOSING ACTIVITY: same as Lesson 1 Week 2 Lesson 1 Review 2-in-1 Review Elevators Introduce Floor Juggling (with bean bags) Week 2 Lesson 2 Introduce Cascade with scarves Review Floor Juggling Week 3 Lesson 1 Review both Cascade and Floor Juggling Review Partner Passing and introduce passing in Elevators Week 3 Lesson 2 SKILL ASSESSMENT: 4 = Can 3 scarves (Elevators or Cascade) 3 = Can juggle 2 scarves in the 2-in-1 pattern 2 = Can toss/catch 2 scarves in a variety of patterns 1 = Can toss/catch 1 scarf with at least the dominant hand

6 I can Juggle Club 5 How to make your own Juggling Balls From Mrs. Sellers LWE-PE We have been learning to juggle in PE! It is a terrific activity for eye-hand coordination. Having your own set of juggling balls will help you perfect your skills and dazzle your friends and family. Here is a step-by-step guide to follow: Materials: For each set of 3 balls your will need Procedure: 3 top fold-over baggies 6 balloons (9 are the best size) 2 cups rice 1. Cut the neck off of each balloon 2. Fill the baggie with 2/3 cup rice, twist end to close 3. Stuff the baggie into one balloon twisted end first 4. Stuff this balloon into a second balloon open end first. 5. Repeat for 2 more balls. For beginning jugglers, use 3 plastic groceries bags to juggle like the scarves we used in PE!
