The emerging football talent has been nominated as the fifth player in the running for the Pakenham Gazette Casey Cardinia Young Gun for The Iceman cometh BRADY White is a name that Hampton Park followers are already familiar with, and that recognition is about to widen significantly after the youngster nicknamed Iceman became the fifth nomination for the 2009 Gazette Casey Cardinia League Young Gun award. The 18 year-old wingman missed the first few weeks of the season with injury but since returning has become a valued and valuable member of the Redbacks senior team. White made his senior debut in round 14 last year and, although he was appointed as the club s under 18 captain this year, has not played a game with the thirds as yet. A Hampton Park boy from day one in the under 11s, White played much of his early football as a defender at centre half back, before being moved to the midfield in the under 16s with great impact. He was a member of the under 13, under 14 and under 16 premiership sides and won the DDJFL and club best and fairest award at under 16 level. Redbacks coach Josh Taylor said White s talent was obvious and it would only improve over time. He listens and is willing to work on his game and that will only improve his football, said Taylor. He s a beauty and he has started to dominate games this year. White credited his parents, Russell and Debbie together with his junior coaches and team mates as the key influences on his career, and it was one of those coaches who gave him his nickname. It was my under 15 and 16 coach Kev Reid who called me Iceman. He gave me the name because he said I was cool, calm and collected, he laughed. He added that Taylor and senior Redbacks team mate Ryan Simpson had also helped him with his football but he was never approached by the Dandenong Stingrays despite his superb junior form. He said that he enjoyed playing with the Redbacks and was happy to stay with the club, but might consider moving higher in the future. I m not sure what I want to do but I might consider going down and training with the VFL at some time in the future. At the moment I m just enjoying it at Hampton Park. riviera mick 135 bomba 135 Stuey 135 murphy 135 righto 135 gopher 135 Since 1908 MPNFL 41

It must have been a good weekend as Stocko got excited, perched himself up on a chair and declared it s a record! Just so people do not get confused, he wasn t talking about Glaumy kicking a goal, it actually was the first time that all three sides have recorded 3 wins on the same day against Rosebud. Lets take some confidence from this and give the highly fancied Sorrento a run for their money when they come to the Pond. The club is recognizing the 200th senior club game of Luke Chant. Through his 21 years at the club there is not much that Luke has not achieved, as he is a premiership player, Captain, B & F winner and a long time committeeman with his journey starting when he joined the club back in Chingy/Lumberjack/ Sculptor as he is known in various circles has not done it easy, coming back from a seriously broken leg in 1999 and various other injuries that have hampered him in attaining this milestone (plenty of time in the trainers rooms). It is a show of commitment, effort and dedication to the club by the big fella that is rare in todays game. By reaching the 200 game mark, Luke automatically becomes a life member of the club, which is a great honor in itself and something that he should be very proud of. Congratulations mate. Social Function this week is the hypnotist night, as previously mentioned Rohan Gazzard and Adam chicken Palmer are back at the club for what is a most popular event and highlight of the social calendar tickets are $25 per person see Kat Bell for tickets before they run out. NETBALL MEETING THIS MONDAY, THE CLUB: As mentioned last week the club is looking at fielding Netball teams for the 2010 season. So for any Wives, Girlfriends or Supporters who are interested in playing or helping out with the newest addition to the Tyabb sporting community please attend.

As we enter the last month of home and away, it s time to fine tune and get all the pieces in place for a big assault come September. Lets keep building momentum and confidence and see how special we can make 09. The Scoobs showed us once again you don t have to be dead to be stiff. That s 3 times this year they ve lost on the last kick of the day. What it shows us though is that our best football matches up against the best teams. Today is a mini final with the winner grabbing 5th spot. You wouldn t need any more incentive than that! The bounced back into form with a good performance against the top of the ladder side. After a month of sub standard performances this was the game that could get our season back on track. The most pleasing thing was the way it was done. It was the sort of footy that had been missing in recent weeks, so to get our mojo back in such an important game was encouraging. The challenge now is to back it up with another strong performance today. Tyabb always come to play so we must keep the foot to the floor. Don t forget the upcoming Back to Front raffle, always a good day and bonding session. See either Gossy or Geoffrey Charles Lattima Morgan for tickets. The sponsors of the week are Two Buoys and 3D paint & Colour. Last week saw only our Reserves record a win but they made hard work of it after having a good lead, it may however ensure our Reserves finals appearance though injuries may also play some part in the final wash up for both our Senior teams. Award winners were: Under 18 s - Aaron Kendall, Josh de Souza and Adam Byrne; Reserves Jay Milward, Adam Garry, Aaron Pasquill and Heath Burriss. Senior awards were not available. Congratulation to Adam Hunter on his vice captaincy of the VCFL rep side that played the VAFA last Sunday at Junction Oval, St Kilda. The club is trying a new concept with Pre Match luncheons and with good reports from our first outing have scheduled another one for Saturday 8th August prior to the Crib Point game see Danny Mongan or Colin Matthews for tickets. At present Club Historian Col Matthews together with Bob Moorehead and Brian Taylor are looking at records, etc trying to compose a team of the century (! ) so if you have any write ups, records or history from that period I am sure they would appreciate it REMINDER Our game against Red Hill will be on Sunday 2nd August and is the VCFL match of the month. The Reverse Draw is again on this year but with greatly improved prizes money so see Col Matthews, Allen Minchington, Ron Hunter or Graham Stelling for tickets and details of the new draw. There has been a marked improvement in effort by all three sides over the last few weeks. Lets move towards 2010 by finishing off the last few rounds with some good wins. The Under 18 s continued their good form even though they were a few players short of their best side, over the next couple of weeks it will be very important to get on the track and continue the good work. The Somie kids always come ready to play and although we have the basic grit and determination the need to be more team orientated is what is required to come away from these encounters with a degree of self respect. The run home for our 18 s isn t easy so lets get behind them and help push them all the way. The two s although missing some off field smarts had control of the game for most of the day. The board master Bill Kerr and on field General Kyle Jennings set up the structures that were required. Sammy Smith, Matt Mc and company kept the score board ticking over. Although it was a scrappy hard fought affair everyone took a turn of doing what needed to be done. Hopefully it will be the same today, with only three more hit outs before the bye and commencement of the finals now is the time to consolidate your place in the team. As far as the senior side goes the winning ugly analogy has become an art form. With little time for getting pretty we will gleefully keep accepting the four points however we can get them. It was a drag em down, tie em up affair on Somies paddock, with very little attractiveness to be found in any area of the game. 10 Frankston Park News Boz reeling in a VFL career It has not come easy, but things are looking up for Mitchell Bosward. While the Dolphins season has not come close to expectations, and the team has had to endure some painful losses that would have been unthinkable under the reign of Brett Lovett, Boz can t help but smile when it is pointed out that he is finally playing regular senior football. The Frankston YCW youngster s first two seasons at the Dolphins were undoubtedly a success by almost every measure, winning two reserves best and fairests and picking the brains of the club s veteran players to unlock the secrets to success at VFL level. But Bosward sets high expectations for himself, and his limited chances in the Dolphins senior midfield proved to be a frustrating experience. It was. The first year I was just happy to be there, but the second year I really wanted to play senior football. I thought I was ready but I just couldn t crack a place in the senior midfield with the players who were in there. I began thinking that maybe I wasn t up to it. But I received a lot of help from (assistant coach) Curly Blackford, I mightn t still be at the club if it wasn t for him. He taught me that making it at VFL level is like catching fish, you have to be patient and you have to realise that sometimes you will come up emptyhanded. After starting 2009 in the centre square for the twos, Bosward was moved to half back by reserves coach Brad Canavan, where his bull-at-a-gate style was better suited. It would prove a masterstroke, and he hasn t looked back. I ve got a more straightforward role now, I just focus on beating my man, he said. In the midfield in the seniors I would be running in circles trying to get the ball because the pace is so quick. In defence, the ball comes to my man and I can do my job from there. While the Dolphins have already lost more games than for all of 2008, Bosward takes great confidence from the key role he has played in their two wins, tense victories over the Bendigo Bombers and Werribee Tigers. It s awesome, he said. Watching the guys do so well in the finals last year was awesome, but I was partly jealous too because I wanted to be out there with them. So to play a part in some wins has been a pretty good feeling. And where another year of playing mostly reserves may well have seen Bosward return to MPNFL football, he is now ready to push on and see just how far a VFL career can take him. Firstly though, he is looking to finish the year strongly in the seniors and then push for a premiership with the third-placed Dolphins reserves, something he says would mean a lot. 50 MPNFL Since 1908 C o n s i d e r - ing I have played about 40 games with them, it would mean a heap. A lot of my really good mates are in the reserves side, so I will really feel a part of it and would love to win the flag with blokes I have played so much footy Mitchell Bosward with. H o p e f u l l y, next season, Bosward will have even bigger fish to fry. The Dolphins play Port Melbourne at Frankston Park on Sunday, 2 August. McCarthy partners PTY. 12 Casey Cardinia Preview Great round ahead NO Casey Cardinia League round is easy to line up and, after last weekend s results, a solid case can be made for every side against the other this week. It is simply a matter of which team is switched on and comes ready to play from the get-go. Keysborough played in a grand final 10 months ago so nobody really should have been surprised with the Burra s excellent win over Pakenham, however the fact that the Lions were at home and have lost only one game this season was what created the surprise. Teams simply can not go through the motions in any game this season. Berwick found that out as well. Beaconsfield has underperformed to date this year but that does not mean the Eagles are easybeats. As for Devon Meadows, if the Panthers ever start winning games consistently they could very well do a Doveton and simply not lose one. This has been a strange season in many ways and it is to be hoped that the competitiveness continues long into the future. With only five home and away rounds to go the jostling for places in the top five is on in earnest. This weekend s results will be crucial to the final make up and we mat also find out who the main challenger to Doveton will be. Doveton v Narre Warren In fact Doveton may find that out first hand who their main challenger is if Narre Warren is on its game. The Doves were tipped to be the big improvers of this season and that has been true. With Danny Casset back in the goalsquare and the added maturity of tearaways like Justin Hill, Ryan Hendy, Michael Henry and Shannon Henwood, there has not been a weakness exposed this season other than the occasional bout of laziness. It will be up to Matt Shinners mixture of seasoned premiership players and rising youngsters to create some doubt in the Doveton minds by applying pressure for four quarters. While players like emerging forward Dylan Piening, Daniel Borninkhof, Justin Marriott and Nathan Brewster will need to be watched, it is doubtful that the Magpies have the strength to stave off the inevitable Doveton goal blitz, and another four points should be added to the ladder leader s tally and another challenger put to the sword. Hampton Park v ROC The Kangaroos have been one of the more impressive sides this season but a loss to Hampton Park will blemish that improvement, despite the hostile venue. ROC coach Kris Fletcher started from a low base and has gradually built his side s system and confidence with the assistance of top line recruits Greg Tivendale, Ash Comer, Kym Jones and Shaun Jones. It is a work in progress and there are still areas to be addressed, but the direction is right. At the Booth Reserve things are far less rosy. Last weekend s loss was bad and with Keysborough winning, suddenly the Redbacks are staring a wooden spoon in the face. Linden Fredericks will return to the side this weekend but his influence has been minimal this year due largely to injury and there simply is not the depth for coach Josh Taylor to call on to cover gaps. Hampton Park is due for a good one, but ROC, off the bye, should prevail. Pakenham v Cranbourne Cranbourne won ugly last weekend and will be happy to do the same against Pakenham this week. The Eagles were comprehensively beaten by the Lions in round one and, if anything, both sides have slipped in form since then. Cranbourne needed last week s hitout and will be better for the run, but leaders including Marc Holt, Troy Datson, Matt Fletcher and Ray George must gather the troops behind them and play with intent to match the number two side in the league. 52 MPNFL Since 1908

13 What s worse for the visitors is that Pakenham is coming off a horror loss against the bottom side of the competition. Save for the efforts of Dan O Loughlin, Nathan Brown and youngster Chris Smith, there was little to cheer about for the Lions last weekend. However that might be the problem for Cranbourne because the home side will be very keen to bounce back and prove to the Casey Cardinia league that it is still on track for glory. Tooradin v Beaconsfield Beaconsfield will approach this weekend s clash against Tooradin with renewed confidence from last weekend s draw, but that might not be enough. The Eagles have concerns with their consistency and they can not keep relying on Chris Kelf, Robbie Taylor, Andrew Williams and Daniel Mislicki every week. There has to be more options and more assistance if they arte to string wins together this season. Tooradin is in a similar phase to ROC in that there was only one way to go at the start of the year and that was up. While there has been several hick-ups on the way, the overall feeling at the Western Port oval is that the direction is right and with big Steve Arvanitis back in the ruck, assisted by Chad Liddell, Beau Miller and Rory Gilliatte, it is not difficult to predict another win to the Seagulls this weekend. Berwick v Devon Meadows The Wickers will be very keen to forget last weekend s draw with Beaconsfield and move on. The best way to do that will be to defeat the Panthers at home but it could be easier written than done. Berwick is not a side that crushes opponents and if they have a quarter or two where the intensity drops away then they are vulnerable. That is so even with the dominance of Jason Heath, Brett Robinson and his brother Dale. Devon Meadows will give themselves a good chance in this one and if their big guns in Brett Armitage, Aaron Henneman, Daniel Rigg and Callum O Hare fire, then that chance could just become reality. That said, Berwick is not sitting in fifth position by fluke and the overall class factor is firmly in the home side s favour, and should help it produce another solid win. Reserves If Cranbourne reserves players are thinking finals football then they have to defeat a top five side. This week they get the chance to do that against Pakenham and on paper the Eagles are a real chance. The Lions had a slow start to the year but are now a hard and tight unit, however Cranbourne has also developed into a good seconds combination and the big ground at Pakenham will suit. An upset is tipped in this one. Top side Doveton lines up against bitter rivals Narre Warren this weekend and followers can expect the usual fireworks. The Magpies are hanging tough in the five but are no certainties on making it at the end of the year. The Doves won t make that task any easier. Hampton Park should sing their song for the second time this year with a close win over ROC while Devon Meadows should down Berwick and Beaconsfield will beat Tooradin. Under 18s On ladder position the match between Pakenham and Cranbourne could be expected to be very close, but in reality the Eagles have far superior form this season and will go in as red-hot favourites, despite the away venue. The under 18s game of the round will likely be played at the Booth Reserve when Hampton Park s youngsters take on the ROC side. Big things were predicted for the Kangaroos under 18s this season but they have been disappointing to date and are well outside the top five. The visitors can expect a gallant effort from the Redbacks but should have too much talent in the long run and take another four premiership points home. Games between Narre Warren and Doveton are always hard fought and this one will be no different, but the Magpies superior depth will be the telling point. In other games Beaconsfield will be too strong for Tooradin and Berwick will down Devon Meadows without much fuss. casey cardinia Tipsters Garry Howe Pakenham Gazette ROC Doveton Devon Meadows Tooradin Pakenham 47 Geoff Ablett Mayor City of Casey ROC Doveton Berwick Tooradin Pakenham 41 Darryl Nisbet SWGFL Legend ROC Doveton Berwick Tooradin Pakenham 45 Brad Kingsbury 3SER ROC Doveton Berwick Tooradin Pakenham 46 Rod Willshire MPNFL Director Hampton Park Doveton Berwick Tooradin Pakenham 42 Since 1908 MPNFL 53

The day started with the Colts again trying hard all day but lack of numbers giving them no chance at all. The under 18 s had to beat the top of the ladder team to keep there finals chances alive. After being down by 4 goals at quarter time in what was a 6 goal wind the under 18 s must have thought they were still in the hunt, but with the side only scoring a point for the next two quarter gave them no chance at all. The boys tried hard in the last quarter with the wind but just couldn t convert kicking 1goal 6 to 2 goals to go down by 64 points. The Reserve also against the wind in the first quarter held the opposition to 2 goals. But with the wind could only convert 1 goal. The third quarter saw both teams kicking 1 goal each, leaving a 23 point deficit at three quarter time. The reserve started the last quarter well, but with the opposition kicking 3 goals to 2 in the last quarter against the wind and going down by 29 points another frustrating day for the boys. The seniors were up next and for the first time in the day ROC started with the wind. ROC came out firing having 13 shots at goal and could have easily been up by 8 or 9 goals but inaccurate kicking left the side kicking 4 goals 9 to 1 goal 2. The second quarter saw ROC kick 1 goal 4 to the oppositions 3 goals 4 and a very good 13 point lead at the main break. The third quarter saw some undisciplined acts by ROC which gave away some easy goals, and what possibly was the turning point in the game, with both sides kicking 4 goals apiece. The last quarter saw Berwick with the wind kick 3 goals 3 to 1 point and win the game by 7 points, and yet another game gone begging by under 10 points. The Senior game was a tough encounter as we expected and it took all our effort to shrug off the determined and improving Devon Meadows. It was pretty even performance across the board for the doves with everyone contributing in another good win. Today we face our old neighbour and foe in Narre Warren and another tough game is expected and I am sure the boys will be more than looking forward to the contest. In the, Hammo led from the front; Potty, Boyley and Herbie played ripper games and we slogged out a gutsy 16-goal win. The Twos 13-goal win saw Cam Dalton and Tim Werner in our best - but poor kicking in windy conditions (12.23) robbed us of an even bigger result. Our 18s ran hard in numbers for a 21-goal win on the back of a sensational debut game by young Colt Jake Gray who kicked 8, Josh Tonna kicked 4, and Ryan Moorhouse, Jason Vellin and the Big Elk Harris Elkasovic were outstanding. The win sees our 18s now sitting on top of the ladder. The only downside of the day was a rare loss by our Colts. Our opponent, ROC, were bolstered by plenty of their senior Under 18s who had the bye in their fixture. It was a good lesson for our group and not one of our players had their colors lowered - man on man. Cody Shortis, Nathan Hiam and Stewie Scanlon were our best. 19 Snapsh t BRETT EVANS is a name synonamous with Narre Warren Football Club. The Birdman is 37 but still commands the opposition s best defender more often than not. A four-time premiership player with the Magpies, Brett also spent four years with Richmond in the AFL and is in his 21st season of senior football after starting as a 16 year-old... Name: Brett Evans Club: Narre Warren Best player seen: I ll stick to locals with me answers. I d have to say Rob Marson and our new numero uno Micky Collins. Hardest opponent: Colin Plant (Cranbourne). Biggest influence on career: My mum Lynette and my family. All time favourite sporting moment: The four premierships at with Narre-I can t split them. My weakness is: Getting injured. I m sick of that. Most annoying team mate: Glenn Hamilton and Steven Kidd when they get together. All they do is talk about how grass grows and gardening. We are hard to beat but we find it hard to win. There is no doubting that the fighting spirit is alive and well at Berwick but old habits die hard, when all that is needed is for the entire team to play to instructions and they will reap the rewards. There is no doubt that we needed to play harder than our opposition to cover some poor decision making and execution. The stakes were high for both sides last week and the fans were treated to a thrilling finish that in the end was probably a true reflection of the work rates of both teams. Beacy were slick in their ball usage while the Wickers battled the ball forward. Jason Heath was outstanding at both ends of the ground. It is worth the admittance price just to watch how he goes about business. The reserves played their best quarter of footy for the year in the first term. That was a flash in the pan as they were demolished by Beacy in the second and third quarters. We rallied again in the final term but it was game over well before then. Another defeat to the thirds. The replay will show just how hard Beacy were prepared to run and produce an excellent display for the entire game. Has the bubble burst or do the boys have the character to respond to a couple of below par performances? The Colts also capitulated in what was a pretty torrid affair. Numbers were down this week and we weren t able to carry our previous good form into the match. We continue the tough run home against Devon Meadows this week. Let s hope we can return to the winner s circle in what will no doubt be another close encounter. Big day with the reverse draw tomorrow from midday. The Reserves then produced their best performance in many years by beating Cranbourne by 1 point. The two s have never beaten Cranbourne since the inception of the Casey Cardinia league and showed great grit to fight back in the final minutes of the game. It was a great team effort with strong leadership by the captain, RJ who was BOG. Well done to Disa, Al and Dom on standout games. The went down by 23 points after giving Cranny a 6 goal head start. The remaining 3 quarters were hard fought but unfortunately the damage was done early. Well done to Paul Ray who battled hard and Clint, Adam and Arvo for all having great games in what were tough conditions. Beacy were headed for the majority of the day, but with a strong wind and inspiring words from our coach we fought back hard. Kelf was great in the ruck again, while Doddsworth continued his great form and Calteri battled hard against his much much bigger opponent. In the end a late shot at goal that hit the post was all that stood in the way of Beacy regaining the Battle of the Creek cup. Congratulations again to our coach on playing another fantastic game in game 100. The Reserves got off to a slow start, but came out in the second and blew their opposition away. The little ranga brigade was great in Jack Benbow and Nathan Hamilton, while the onballers in Mather, Salter and Munday drove the ball forward with precision. Their good work was finished off by big Scotty Lucas who finished with 3. The 18s had a great win against the side sitting in second place. Beacy got off to a great start to lead the first change by 3 goals. From here they were never headed. Collings, Kingy, Covey and Billy were all in great touch. Last week also saw the 3rd annual golf day run and won, and who would of thought Paul Olsonn could ever get his name on the trophy? Well it has happened, he was the outstanding golfer of the day, shooting 1 over to take the title by 1 shot. Did I mention he was being towed by the L-Mac express? News on the impending shift to Casey Fields is that the council have approved and adopted a budget which allocates money this year for works to upgrade facilities to various ovals and clubrooms to accommodate the Cranbourne Football Club. If all goes to plan it will see the whole senior arm of the club that includes the girls youth team, all abilities and the super-rules be based at Casey Fields to re unite us with the netball club and the cricket club. Our boards aim in working with the various council departments is to have the relocation settled before April 2010 leaving the E.G Allen reserve for the utilisation of the Cranbourne Junior F.C until the re development plans at that reserve are started by council. This is from our boards perspective a win win situation for all our members comfort and enjoyment wether you may play, participate or plain just socialise. 26 Victorian Country Football League VCFL Takes Honours The VCFL Senior & U19 teams both had good wins against the VAFA (A&B sections) at the Junction Oval on Sunday 19th July to take the Brian Molony and Challenge Cups. In good conditions the VCFL took both prizes on the day billed as Australian Football s Championship of Victoria. The VCFL Senior team pegged back a 30 point deficit in the last quarter to win the match with the last kick of the day in a stirring team performance. Dave Clark (Corowa-Rutherglen) took a strong pack mark 35 metres out from goal in the dying moments of the game. The siren sounded as the ball passed through the goals to notch up a 4 point win. The game was at level pegging at half time at 52 points a piece. The VAFA came out with the wind and superior teamwork in the third quarter to post what seemed to be an unassaible lead. VAFA captain, Brett Voss, Tom Simpson, and big men Roger McIntyre and Matthew Handley dominated their positions on the ground and at stoppages. Coach Peter Knights implored his team to give everything in the last quarter, that the time is here to give it all you ve got, to maintain the structures in place, and to ensure that rotations happen when you have given everything. In a game that ebbed and flowed, the VCFL overcame a slow start to get moving with 15 minutes to go in the match with quick ball movement into the forward line and accurate finishing. The VAFA could not put the country boys away, who showed extreme determination and dash in the last quarter. Better players for the VCFL Senior team included captain Jarrod Edwards (Redan), Luke Walker (Pakenham), Chris Irving (Seaford), Adam Hunter (Dromana), and Joey McLaren (Koroit). VCFL winning team 66 MPNFL Since 1908 In the U19 Challenge Cup, the country underdogs upstaged the Ammos with a 46 point victory. The VCFL team looked well drilled with hard ball winners all over the ground. Nick Coghlan (Irymple) continued good club form with 4 goals, while Lee Coghlan (Sandhurst) dominated around the ground. Captains Sam Stavenuiter and Jay Koehler, had terrific games at both ends of the ground. 28 Casey Cardinia Young Rising Netball Star Dove Kaila to fly high KEEP an eye out for the name Kaila Simpson on the netball court. The 16 year-old Doveton player is among the hottest young netball talents in the league and has earned a nomination as MPNFL netball s Young Rising Star. Kaila started her netball with Narre Warren Netball Club in 2002 but moved to Doveton Football Netball Club in 2005 and has worked her way up to become an emerging A-grade player, as well as an MPNFL 17 and under tournament squad member. She also represented the Cranbourne South West Netball Association (CSWNA) in 2004, 2005 (captain), 2006 and 2008 and the Victorian Primary Schools Metro side in Kaila s list of accolades is long and impressive in netball. She was the league Under 15s best and fairest winner in 2008, and also scored club best and fairest awards in 2008 (under 15) and 2005 (under 13) and was runner up in She took out the Outlanders under 15s Coaches Award in 2006, and won best and fairest awards at Narre Warren in 2002, 2003 and Her team record is nearly as impressive with a premierships in under 15s with Doveton in 2007 and under 13s at Narre Warren in 2004 as captain. Kaila lists selection to play with the Doves A-grade side among the highlights of her fledgling career to date, and said that her ambitions include representing the MPNFL Sharks interleague side at A-grade level and playing in a Doveton A-grade premiership team. Doveton s Kaila Simpson looks set for a top netball career on her form to date this season. Her coach, Vanessa San Jose, is thrilled to have such a promising young netballer in her side and said that Kaila had a good future ahead. Kaila is a bottom age under 17 girl that has discipline and has shown leadership skills, she said. She is a pleasure to coach as she has grown into a versatile player, taking any position and challenge I give her. Kaila is dedicated to her netball and club. She continually improves her strengths on the court and is admired by juniors and seniors. She has risen above her own expectations by playing and being a major part of our A-grade team. Her sportsmanship on the court at trainings is also to be admired. 29 Casey Cardinia Netball Preview Thelma and Louise present White Line Fever No. 13 U17s SUPER SPECIAL EDITION! Whilst the tussle for finals position tightens up in the A Grade competition, let s scroll down to the U17s for this edition of Thelma & Louise, and have a detailed look at our A Graders in the making. The U17 competition has never been stronger, with every team in the top 5 capable of taking out the flag this year. If the MPNFL looks to its juniors to see its future A Grade stars, then the future is looking bright! First spot on the ladder is held by Tooradin, a position that the club is familiar with as they are notoriously strong in this section. Star players for this team include centre courters Shannon Peasley & Jade Waite, whilst defender Mel Mantel is always consistent and goaler Dayle Willis holds up their shooting end. The Tooradin team is coached by Andrew Kane who has brought the team together beautifully, with the Gulls only dropping one game all season to Beaconsfield in the first round. The Gulls and Beaconsfield face off for the last time before finals today, and the game will most defiantly be a showcase of the best junior talent in netball this side of Melbourne. Whilst Tooradin are favourites for the flag, the next top 4 clubs on the ladder are all capable and competitive enough to take out the title from under their fingertips. Second on the ladder is Narre Warren who have recruited well and have come up with a very strong side this year. Star players in this team include centre courters Kate Murphy & Britti Donaldson, defender Rachel Hancock and goaler Demi Brettoner. This team lead the competition all year until their recent loss to Tooradin sent them down the ladder one spot. With the strongest defence end of the U17s with only 160 goals shot against them, they will prove to be a headache for all team they come up against. Third on the ladder are the Beaconsfield Eagles who are the only team to defeat top of the ladder Tooradin this year. Star players for this team include Captain Danni-Elle Llinares who also plays A Grade, MPNFL U19 goaler Michaela Greer and MPNFL U19 defender Kaitlyn Paligorov. CASEY CARDINIA FOOTBALL NETBALL SHOW Saturday mornings 8.00am am 8.00 am Netball with Alison Neil 8.20 am Football with Brad Kingsbury The team is coached by Kellie Holland who also plays A Grade for Beaconsfield. The Eagles are the only team to have defeated the impressive Tooradin side and their game against the Gulls this weekend will be a show stopper. Expect a tight encounter and these youngsters to be going to everything in this game. Fourth on the ladder we have last year s U15s Premiers and U17s R ups Berwick. Star players for this side include Vic School Girl Representative and sharp shooter Taylah Shannon and speedy centre courter Emily Pratt. These two girls are the standouts in this team and Taylah especially is a shining light in goals with a shooting percentage that must make Irene Van Dyke eat her heart out! Berwick are proven finals contenders and will be looking to make it to the last day in September just like they did in all their juniors last year. Fifth on the ladder we have Hampton Park and a big congratulations must go out to the Redbacks for their performance this year. This age group will be the shining light of the club and expect them to have rip roaring crowds to support them come finals time. Star players in this team include the dominant shooting combination of Kimiora Partch & Kayla Elgaznieks and speedy centre courter Leigh Taylor. Club President Larry Simpson must be super proud of the work these girls are doing and will be the first person setting up his pole position seat come finals time when he will be there to support his side. So there it is, the U17s top 5 and finals contenders for this year. With superstars in each and every club in this section, look out A Grade teams as these girls push into seniors spots as soon as next year. As I said, the future of the standard of netball being played in the MPNFL looks very bright, and I will look forward to watching these youngsters develop and hopefully stick with their respective clubs to strengthen the league even future. Can you imagine if all of the Narre Warren and Hampton Parks U17s stick with their respective clubs?? Perhaps these clubs shining glory in seniors are only a couple of seasons away with juniors like these! 97.7 Since 1908 MPNFL 69

30 Casey Cardinia Netball Onto the A Grade games this week and we have a couple of massive games. Cranbourne will want to show that they are up to finals standard as they try to take a massive scalping in Pakenham. I don t think they will be able to knock the Pakky girls off their perch, but with desperation and much needed points on the line, who knows? Beaconsfield play Tooradin in what is always a strong game. Word is Tooradin gun gaoler Kerryn Van Der Hayden has to end her season short, and will not be playing anymore games for the Gulls. It s a big loss for Tooradin as Kerryn has such heart and energy that sometimes she can win games just off her enthusiasm and guts. It s a loss that just might be the Gulls undoing, can youngster goalers Abby D Jong and Sharna Wadeson step up to the plate and replace her? Time will tell. Beaconsfield will win this game though. Berwick play Devon Meadows! Who will win this game? I have no idea! Both teams have left their run for finals very late, but both runs are not impossible to make. This will be the game of the round and I will be there viewing it, as I love a game played with desperation and heart and this game will be just that. The winner can keep dreaming of September, whilst the looser, may as well start dreaming about the trip away. The ROC ers will have an easy one this week and get some percentage against the Redbacks, whilst Narre Warren will defeat the Doves in easy fashion. HAMPTON PARK What a week, we went from chocolates to boiled lollies before going to back to chocolates. The dream died and became a nightmare before A grade saved me. The 13 s went into this game, knowing that a loss would make playing finals extremely difficult, unfortunately they decided to take the first half off to warm up and consequently paid the ultimate price. Although mathematically they are still a chance, it now comes down to the fact that to make it they have to win every game and they have to play 3 sides that are above them, impossible? No. Are they capable? Yes. Will they do it? Only they can answer that. So come on girls let s give it your all and see where that takes you. The 15 s came up against a very good side and although beaten, the girls are showing a different determination than before, the 2 wins that they had have given them the confidence to play against the better teams and be competitive for the whole game, well done and keep it up, you may win a few more before the end of the season. The 17 s knew going into this game that this was the start of 5 very important games for them, and that a good showing today would maintain their march to the finals, unfortunately Narre had other ideas and played a very good game to run out winners. Sure we had 2 key 70 MPNFL Since 1908 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Club A B C Total Beaconsfield Pakenham Berwick Tooradin Narre Warren Cranbourne ROC Keysborough Doveton D Meadows Hampton Park Here are this week s A Grade tips!! Hampton Park v ROC Doveton v NARRE WARREN Berwick v DEVON MEADOWS Tooradin v BEACONSFIELD PAKENHAM v Cranbourne Keysborough with the bye. Good luck to everyone today and may the best teams win. Hugs and kisses, Thelma & Louise defenders out and that does not help but also I know that they won t use that as an excuse. Knowing these girls they will get together during the week and start planning for next week and just put this game in the memory bank for when they meet again. I don t need to tell them what they need to do in this forum, they already know and they have the determination to achieve their goal. C start the game off well and looked as though they were determined to make me fork out some more of my hard earned, but alas it was not meant to happen, still they can hold their heads high for playing the game out to the end. There is not one person in the Club that can question your persistence or your dedication to your teammates. I will go on record and say that the B grade match was lost in a 10 minute period when we lost 3 key defenders to rolled ankles. In what was a very good contest we first lost Jacqui, then Sheena towards the end of the 2nd quarter then A.J went down in the 3rd and even though Nat and Claire tried their hardest the damage was done and Narre went on to a comfortable win. Hopefully the injuries aren t as bad as they looked, especially for A.J. but in saying that my heart says Sheena could be out for 1 to 2 weeks, hopefully she can prove me wrong. A grade became the Club saviour stopping Narre from posting 6 win for the day. In another gutsy display they were determined to go one better from the first

31 Casey Cardinia Netball time these 2 met which resulted in a draw, and they achieved their goal. Confidence is a funny thing and 3 weeks ago these girls had reached rock bottom and were just going through the motions, 2 wins later and they are actually looking forward to playing ROC. It should be an interesting contest. This week also is Nat s 100th game which given her age and the fact that she also played at Pakenham is a fantastic achievement, hopefully she can celebrate with a win, but I am sure Nic won t make it easy for her or the team. Also Cat has only 9 goals to go for that magical 1000th and we are hoping that she can achieve it today and maybe also celebrate with a win, go get em girl. Socially the Presentation Day\Night will be held at the Club rooms on the 12th of Sept, cost will be $5.00 for Juniors and $15.00 for. Prices includes Spit Roast Dinner and entertainment, drinks will be at Bar Prices, so see me and lets make this a memorable night. Go Parkers BERWICK In the second Battle of the creek round for the season Berwick played Beaconsfield in an away round at the weekend. The two teams share a competitive rivalry which was demonstrated on Saturday with six exciting games of Netball! Berwick White teams enjoyed some early morning sunshine at Pakenham in an away game at the weekend. A Grade Berwick 30 defeated by Beaconsfield 62 Spirits were flying high after some brilliant results by the A Grade side over the last few rounds. A tough task was ahead of the girls and we felt ready for it, but the Beaconsfield girls were also ready and up for the Battle of the Creek. And a battle it was, the first blood timeout was only twenty seconds into the match! Beaconsfield s well-drilled, experienced and talentladen line-up was too good all over the court. Their defensive pressure sucked out all life of our attempts in attack. Our defensive work by Bec Vickers, Jodie Cranston and Michelle Graham was fantastic, forcing some wayward balls from the Beacy attack. But, our possession was short-lived as Beacy flooded the court space and pounced on everything. We managed to get a number of balls past Beacy s defensive wall through creative, smart and quick ball movement. Berwick played courageously, not giving up before the final whistle. The season isn t over yet and Berwick need to lift now and push on to make a claim for that coveted finals place! Best on Court: Rebecca Vickers B Grade Berwick 41 defeated Beaconsfield 36 A close game against ROC in the previous round meant that Berwick were alert and well prepared for a tough match against their rivals Beaconsfield. A battle of second versus third, Saturday s match was the nail biting physical competition both teams expected. All players were willing to commit to their team and put up a relentless fight for every ball resulting in some exciting Netball action! Beaconsfield started strong which startled Berwick and unsettled them for the first quarter, leaving the team seven goals behind at the break. After making changes Berwick were re-energised and re-focused and this was demonstrated in their following three quarters of play. Berwick s defence were under pressure to create turnovers and opportunities for their team which they handled with skill and maturity. The ladies severely limited Beaconsfield s goals in the second half and the midcourt supported their hard work down the court. Across the court, the ladies committed themselves to chasing up all loose balls against an equally tenacious Beaconsfield midcourt. In Berwick s goal third, the attack were steady around the ring concentrating on choosing the best option feeding into goalers who were on their toes presenting and re-presenting. Berwick were sure to reward their team mates efforts down the court converting their play to be reflected on the scoreboard. Accurate shooting and bullet like speed in the ring was all too much for the Beaconsfield defence in the end. Berwick made a 12 goal turnaround, to take precious four points by five! Under 17 Berwick 29 defeated by Beaconsfield 39 After our first clash earlier in the season, this match was sure to be a good tussle. However, Berwick s depleted defence end had no answer and was undone by the tall Beacy GS and smart GA. Berwick s mid-court and attack end moved the ball seamlessly most of the day but uncharacteristically came unstuck under the post. Beacy were solid all over the court and much harder to the ball. We will learn a few valuable lessons from this match and take them into the remaining rounds and finals series. Margo s Fine Chocolates & Café Best on Court: Renee Gill 15 & Under Blue Berwick 19 defeated by Beaconsfield 24 Berwick s 15 Under Blue played a great game despite going down to Beaconsfield by five goals. Defenders applied relentless pressure on the Beaconsfield attack both in and outside the ring. Together the team worked hard to support one another, our midcourt players were especially effective in backing up turnovers and driving the ball down into our attack end. This meant that the goalers were given plenty of opportunities inside the ring which they worked tirelessly all game to capitalise on. Congratulations to Kaitlyn Taylor who played her heart out, going for every ball and never giving up. Best on Court: Kaitlyn Taylor 13 & Under White Berwick 15 defeated by Pakenham 30 For the first time in weeks Berwick almost had their full team together on Saturday! This was reflected on the court as players shared confidence in one another Since 1908 MPNFL 71

32 Casey Cardinia Netball which was demonstrated in their play. The midcourt combined beautifully on Saturday offering solid support to their defenders, bringing the ball down the court with some excellent vision when passing. This play continued into the goal ring, where the C and WA in each quarter made excellent judgements on the ball placement into their goalers who were back with a vengeance working well to support each other in the ring. Berwick s defence were up against some very tall goalers but they worked hard to anticipate the flight path of the ball which resulted in many successful intercepts. Backed up by the midcourt the defence effort was critical to making it hard for Pakenham to make any easy passages of play. It is great to see the team work so well together and continue to step up to new challenges every week! Best on Court: Allana Hadley, Sian Curtain, Lauren Labinski. BEACONSFIELD The Beaconsfield Netball Club welcomed Berwick last week for the Battle of the Creek. We enjoyed a great day with some terrific netball. Our A grade side had a great win to once again retain the cup. Congratulations to Corrine Mackley for her outstanding goaling in the last quarter. Today we play Tooradin at Tooradin and are expecting some very tight games especially with the U/17 s who have been on a roll and take on the 1st placed Tooradin side. Good luck girls! Tonight we look forward to all getting together in the footy rooms for the ABC night. Let s all get there and have a great time together. We are having a games night for the juniors on Friday 31st July 6.30pm in the footy rooms. Food, Games and fun for U/13 s U/17 s please keep this night free! The Life Members are having their annual shopping spree Saturday 17th October. Cost is $40.00 which includes lunch. I know this date is months ahead, but it s never too early to book your seat on the bus see Heather for more details! Congratulations to Georgie Benbow, Abbie Sheers and Bessie O Sullivan all U/15 s for being identified through Netball Victoria to attend the Central East Zone Academy Selections in August. TOORADIN Well, I don t think the conditions could have been ANY worse for netball than what we faced last Saturday at Casey Fields! Gale force, blistering cold winds which had come straight from the tops of the alps made conditions for netball terrible! With snuggies, doona s & sleeping bags providing some comfort for those on the sidelines, the girls on court unfortunately had no escape from it and had to battle it out as best they could. Our 17 s & C grade had great wins so congratulations girls on 2 great games. Our 13 s had a slow start but redeemed themselves in the second half and played some great netball. Our 15 s struggled with the conditions and unfortunately let a much needed win slip away. B grade had a game they would rather forget and were lucky to come away with a draw and A grade were pipped at the post by a goal after a gallant effort in terrible conditions. Senior netball Auction Players: Michelle Barnes, Nicole Ostrom & Melanie Mantel (I think that is about 7 in a row for Mel well done!!). Today we welcome Beaconsfield Netball Club to our courts and are expecting 6 very tough games. Hopefully we can get some much needed wins on the board. GO TOORA S SOCIAL NEWS.. SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT SATURDAY 3RD TOORADIN SPORTSCLUB. PUT THIS DATE IN YOUR DIARY NOW Good luck to all netballers & footballers today against Beaconsfield! GO SEAGULL S!!!! PAKENHAM A Grade Pakenham A Grade played strong netball in trying conditions against 4th placed Keysborough on Saturday, coming away with a 19 goal victory. Combining tenacious defence with numerous attacking opportunities Pakenham finished the game off in style to eventually take the contest Mel Elston and Jodie Bird teamed well in defence, Lauren Cherry, Danielle West and Michelle Webster provided Keysborough with headaches in both attack and defence, and Rachel Priestly and Cathy Leeves proved too tall in the Pakenham goal circle. B grade Strong defensive work all over the court, good ball movement and goalers worked well together which had Pakenham up by 15 goals at half time. Plenty of 72 MPNFL Since 1908

33 Casey Cardinia Netball encouraging talk from both defenders and attackers. Pakenham 50 to Keysborough 41. Best of court Jess Benn. C Grade Pakenham were slow to get their rhythm together against Keysborough but goals came easier in the second quarter. Keysborough s second half wanted the ball more and pressured Pakenham into hesitating with their passes and the confidence of Pakenham team was threatened. Pakenham lucky to finish with a draw 28 goals even. Under 15 Pakenham played a determined Berwick White team. The game was tight the whole way through. The girls settled, made a number of timely intercepts in defence and fed the ball beautifully into the goal circle to come away with a win. Under 13 The Girls played a fantastic game against Berwick White. Goalers played well moving and shooting accurately. Centre court players created a lot of turnovers and putting pressure on their opponents. Defenders played one of their best games making it hard for her opponent to get the ball.
