It s amazing what confidence and momentum can do to a team. One very promising sign of our victory was that we did it with some notable outs which shows our depth is improving. The focus now turns to Rye (a team we have failed to beat since the restructure) so if we can overcome another mental hurdle and make it three on the trot we re on our way to showing the league we re an up and coming side ready to be taken seriously. The twos were extremely disappointing and deserved the result dished up to them. The bright side to their loss was a lot of things we did wrong can be easily rectified. It s not a fitness or depth or talent issue which is contributing to the losses but a lot of the one percenters we re not doing that the seniors are. The Under 18s were beaten by a pretty slick Somerville outfit. You could see the lads having a dip but they were simply outgunned by a bigger, stronger side. Wins are around the corner guys. Netballers take to the courts again today after a week off and I m sure they ll continue on their winning ways. Today is the Bluey Holmes shield match against the Tigers. We need to fill the gap left by the Healy-Emond trophy which has temporarily left us. Well done to the Magpies who beat us in a nip and tuck affair. The huge crowd witnessed a moving Anzac ceremony, and the unique experience of the twos and unders playing simultaneously. Keeping track of the scores was a job in itself. Well done to Greeny, Marty, and their charges for our first wins of the season- with the Bombers beating Collingwood I only needed the ones to get up for a Magpie quadrella!! Our thoughts are with Pat Holmes who snapped her Achilles in the netball game. 9 of Football Spirit Awards Sgt Janene Denton with Chris Hatzis Chelsea FC Spirit of Football Medal Last Saturday saw the presentations of the first Spirit of Football Awards to the MPNFL Under 18 Players. Presentations were attended by League Officials and Members of the Victorian Police and at the conclusion of the Under 18 games, both teams lined up for the presentations. This week s winners are: Peninsual FL Lachlan Wallace, Frankston YCW FC Nepean FL Adam Hurst, Hastings FC Casey Cardinia FNL Max Gearon, Cranbourne FC These players will be presented with their Spirit of Football Medal at the conclusion of the game today. Act Sgt Nick Sigg with Jack Townsend Tyabb FC Frankston Bombers Notes Sometimes a reality check can be just what is required to focus people on a set task, as Winston Churchill once said kites fly highest against the wind not with it. One poor quarter was all it took for a very polished and professional Sorrento to over run the Bombers. Metro was again solid up front, while Harro stuck to his task all day. Once again Belly was fantastic at Centre Half Back, leaving the coaching staff to consider where the Skipper, Hayden Moore, will play when he returns. I should mention Brian O Carroll again but I am beginning to run out of superlatives. I wonder if there is any truth to the rumour that the League is switching to the BO C ball, as it looks like Brian brings his own along each week any way. The twos continued on their winning way, once again big Matt Longley stood out up front. In fact his form is so hot that he made need to get a new jumper made out of fire resistant material. He and the rest of the team will need to keep focus as they try to go one better this year. The thirds continued their improvement fighting hard but eventually going down. They are showing plenty of spirit and it is extremely exciting to see the future of the club improving each week. Speaking of improving, bring you back yard up to shape with a Budget Tennis Court and some paving by Hi-tech. I m sure Bendigo bank can help out with the finances. Since 1908 MPNFL 47

10 Frankston Park News Whiz eager to return Ricky Morris is a frustrated man. Anyone who knows the Dolphins speedster would be aware that this has not been a part of his make-up for quite some time. But after a stellar 2008 season where Morris established himself as a top shelf small forward in the VFL, he has not been able to get on the park this year thanks to a recurring hamstring injury. With the team struggling for bite around the packs, Morris is not coping well as a spectator. It s really tough to watch the boys at the moment, being 0-4 and not playing the footy we know we can, Morris said. We ve just got to get a win on the board and go from there. We can t talk about making finals or anything like that, just get that first win and things can turn around pretty quickly. With the man they call Whiz likely to be out for another month, the Dolphins are going to have to turn it around without one of their most energetic and passionate players. Morris loves playing football, and cites the 2003 MPNFL premiership he won with Pearcedale as one of his crowning achievements. It was great, winning a premiership that young, he said. But I was only 17, I don t think I did fully appreciate it, being so young. Now that I m a bit older I know how hard it is to win one. And the desire to win another premiership at Pearcedale burns strong. It s my home club. I played my juniors there and in a senior premiership there, he said. It s my culture, I have grown up there. It s my mates club, my dad s mates and my uncle s mates club. So does he think about returning? I have a think about it every year. It s such hard work playing at VFL level. But I love knowing that I am playing in the best competition possible, playing against AFL players I get a buzz from that. And not surprisingly, his passion for the game has transferred to the Dolphins. It s my club now, too. The guys there are my mates, and I love rocking up to the club. And the thrill of beating teams with up to 18 AFL-listed players? That s a massive positive. I love those games, and I love seeing the joy the boys get from doing that. A.W. PANELS Smash Repairs 104 Dandenong Road, Frankston HOUR TOWING SERVICE AAMI Recommended Repairer GIO Repairer 48 MPNFL Since 1908 Morris candidly admits that he would play with Pearcedale on a Saturday and the Dolphins on Sunday if it were possible, and believes he will play many more games for both clubs before his playing days are done. But for now, his focus is on Ricky Morris rehabilitating his hamstring and following up on his outstanding, and consistent, 2008 season. It didn t start that well, he said of his break out year. I didn t do much of the pre-season, I lost one of my best mates during that time. Then I got dropped after round two and got told to go back to the twos and work on my fitness. I did that, and after I got back up things just worked out. A lot of it had to do with belief. Belief that I can play at this level, and belief in me from the coaching staff. Blackers (Tony Blackford) played a big role in helping me take that step. The Dolphins are looking to turn their season around this weekend, but if they are to once again surge toward the top of the ladder, and make the finals for the fourth time in fifth years, they will need a healthy Whiz fit, firing and creating havoc in their forward line. The Dolphins play Williamstown at Frankston Park on Mother s Day (Sunday, 10 May). Mothers will be admitted free and receive a free ticket into the Mother s Day raffle, while their will be family activities including Mini Golf, face painting, Animal Farm, a jumping castle and more Days a Week

There was a lot of anticipation coming into this week for the girls, knowing that the game was going to be a tough one against Rye. With Rye s courts not up to scratch, we managed to use our home ground again at Eastbourne. The game was very tight all the way but Rye managed to come through at the end for the win. Scores were Rye 30 d. Rosebud 22. This is sure the to be the start of some healthy rivalry, so we re looking forward to playing against them again toward the end of the season. All the girls played really well but Rye selected the best players this week as: Tracey Snooks, Monique Cain and Erin Haberle. The girls are currently in discussions about acquiring a coach to help out for an hours training session during the week as well as the game on the weekend. It would be great to hear from anyone with a netballing history who might be interested in helping out. Looking forward to our next game against Pearcedale at their home ground. 13 Casey Cardinia Preview New order in 2009 L ast weekend s results confirmed that there are some new players in the race for the Casey Cardinia League premiership and flag favourites Pakenham can expect some fresh challengers to their seeming mortgage on the top of the table. Berwick has emerged from the pack as a genuine threat after three solid wins over good opposition. Football followers are used to hype being generated from the Edwin Flack Reserve but suddenly there looks to be some substance behind it and that is good for the competition. Down at Casey Fields Cranbourne has also signalled that it is more than interested in playing a big part in this year s September action over the last two weeks. We will find out how big this week. Evergreen finalists Doveton will also be there abouts again, while ROC, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren have all shown signs of hope. The 2009 Casey Cardinia league competition is living up to the predictions of followers and firmly placing the feet in the mouths of its knockers. Cranbourne v Pakenham Bring this one on as quickly as possible, and let s hope the conditions are the same as they were last week at Casey Fields-perfect. Pakenham is the yardstick of the league again but rival coaches and backroom boys will believe that they can bring the Lions undone when it matters. Whether Cranbourne has the ability, mental strength and commitment to do that this week will be known at 5pm Saturday. The Lions rely on the ruck strength of Jeremy Everett, but also need their main playmakers in Luke Walker, Dan O Loughlin, Ryan Cassidy and John Atwell to take charge across the centre. It will be up to talented Eagles including Jarrod Murphy, Matt Fletcher, Stuart Morrish and new sharp-shooter Brad Coller to match up and apply pressure to the Lions. This will be a game worth the admission price but tipping against Pakenham is like tipping against Geelong in the AFL-regardless of the challenger you just don t do it. Beaconsfield v Keysborough Is Keysborough already shot as far as being a legitimate finals contender in 2009 is concerned? We will know the answer to that question after this weekend s clash with Beaconsfield. The signs were good for two quarters last week but then the Burra stopped running and were completely dominated. That is a bad sign because it s happened twice this year and reflects either a lack of application, a lack of skill or a lack of fitness. Maybe it is a combination of all three but regardless, coach Greg Siwes has a huge task to lift his side s spirits before this week s game. His Beaconsfield counterpart Robbie Taylor also has some work to do after last weekend s loss. Good efforts just don t cut in football unless four premiership points go with them and the Eagles need a win. They will be looking towards Taylor, Andrew Williams, Lachlan Oakley and Daniel Mislicki to provide the leadership to achieve that result and providing they are on their games, they likely will. Doveton v ROC The Doves are flying and it will be up to ROC to pluck up the fight to take on arguably the second best side in the competition and beat them at their home ground this weekend. Not many will achieve that feat this year. The Kangaroos fell away in the final term last weekend and by doing so have put themselves in a desperate situation. A win against a top quality rival would be a great boost and supporters will be looking to Greg Tivendale, his brother Ben, Kym Jones and Mick Moylan to lead the way. How those lads will stop the likes of Russell Gabriel, Ryan Hendy, Daryl Thomas and Ricky Hayes is the big question. Since 1908 MPNFL 51

14 Casey Cardinia Preview The answer, unfortunately for the ROC side, is that they won t and the Doves should put down another challenge and maintain their steady path forward towards a top three finish this year. Berwick v Narre Warren This is a traditional clash that has often been a fizzer over the last few seasons with the Magpies dominating. That will not be the case this weekend with the Wickers already proving that they are the real deal this season. Narre Warren is in a holding pattern and everyone involved with the club has played down the triple premiership side s chances in Well that is to be believed at any opponent s peril because any team that boasts players like Brett Evans, Glenn Hamilton, Clay Peresso and Steven Kidd is always going to give itself a chance at glory. Berwick has a heap of good recruits who have performed well so far but this is their biggest test. If Darren Granger, Rowan Pybus, Andrew Tuck and big Grant Noonan start from where they left off last week, it will be great match, but the magpies are a class act and winning at the Edwin Flack Reserve is a habit for them. Tooradin v Devon Meadows This is a crucial match for both clubs for different reasons. The Seagulls aim is to win a game-any game-and then start the long road up from the bottom of the ladder. The Panthers on the other hand, are still entertaining thoughts of a top five finish after drawing with Doveton a fortnight ago, and will want to smash Tooradin to prove to all that they are a real player. With the return of Beau Miller and several very handy recruits in the mix, the Seagulls might be able to give the Panthers a fright too. However that will likely only last for the first half because Devon Meadows has a really good balance of talent this season, led by stars Daniel Rigg and Aaron Henneman, and coach Steve O Brien is just waiting for them to switch on for four quarters. Hopefully for him that happens this weekend because if not, Tooradin could really push the issue. Reserves THE match of the day in the reserves is the same as that in the seniors with both Cranbourne and Pakenham keen to assert itself as a club, not just a side in While there are a few old heads in both sides, the vast majority of players are young up-an-comers keen to impress and put their names forward for senior selection. That should ensure a great game that will go down to the wire. Cranbourne at home is always a hard proposition and the nod goes to the Eagles in this one. Berwick chalked up its first win for the year last week and will be intent on making that two against Narre Warren. Unfortunately the young Magpies will be too fast for the Wickers, even at Berwick. The other games look very predictable with Doveton and Beaconsfield far too good for ROC and Keysborough respectively, and Devon Meadows tipped to give Tooradin a touch up. Under 18s WHAT a cracking under 18 clash the Berwick and Narre Warren game threatens to be. Not only are the two sitting in second and third position, the clubs have a bitter rivalry that goes back generations and off-field there is little love lost between the two neighbours too. A good crowd should get to the Edwin Flack Reserve early to watch this one and the winner will be the side that concentrates on the ball all day. A toss of the coin says Berwick. Cranbourne has started on top of its game and will be keen to show challengers Pakenham that they intend to stay in that spot this season. They should be able to that with something to spare. The game between ROC and Doveton will be close with the Kangaroos a chance of causing an upset, while Tooradin and Keysborough will be no match for their rivals this week in Devon Meadows and Beaconsfield. casey cardinia Tipsters Garry Howe Pakenham Gazette Doveton Berwick Devon Meadows Beaconsfield Pakenham MPNFL Since 1908 Geoff Ablett Mayor City of Casey Doveton Berwick Devon Meadows Keysborough Pakenham 10 Darryl Nisbet SWGFL Legend Doveton Berwick Devon Meadows Keysborough Pakenham 11 Brad Kingsbury 3seR Doveton Narre Warren, Devon Meadows, Beaconsfield, Pakenham 10 Rod Willshire MPNFL Director Doveton Berwick Devon Meadows Keysborough Cranbourne 10

15 Snapsh Casey Cardinia Snapshot BIG Daniel Fry is a familiar sight in the Pakenham goalsquare and when on song, is among the most dangerous forwards in the Casey Cardinia league. Fry has played all his football with the Lions from under 10s up, apart from a season with Catani under 16s and another with Nar Nar Goon under 17s. The Colts tried hard all game and had as much of the football but just couldn t convert in front of goals. The under 18 s also had chances in front of goals early, and outscored the opposition in the second half but gave them to much of a start to get any where near the score they needed. The Reserves as I said, will get better each week the more they play and train together, and this week proved that as they put it right up to the opposition and just ran out of legs in the last quarter. The seniors game turned out to be a bit of a shootout with both sides going goal for goal for most of the game, at three quarter time ROC having a two goal lead the Berwick hit the front in the last quarter by a couple of goals and ROC leveling the scores then Berwick running away in the last five minutes to win the game. I would like to thank Robert Cousins for putting on a great past players and official s day, it was great to meet so many of the old faces, I just hope a lot more keep returning to the club. No more than a couple of kicks separated the teams throughout the match with Berwick struggling to match up the Tivendales and Kym Jones. Berwick hit the front just before three quarter time before ROC answered. For the third week in a row the side produced a solid come from behind victory. Everyone was impressed with the progress of under 18 gun, Jarrod Buntine who relished the opportunity to display his talents against larger and more experienced opponents. We are looking forward to see how we measure up against Narre this week. The twos tasted victory for the first time this year. Selection of the right combination of players has been difficult with so many available each week. We are closer to the right mix and it is up to each player to impress on the track and excel when their opportunity arises to be assured of a regular game. This week will see if we can continue on a winning streak against another quality team. We expect a couple to return from the seniors and others will come under consideration having increased their training regimes over the past month or two. The thirds and colts dominated their games which was pleasing considering the number of injuries plaguing the teams. We are continuing to attract a large number of recruits which couldn t have come a better time. Mums, girlfriends, sisters, great aunts are all welcome to enjoy the happy hour for girls in the Social Club at three quarter time of the reserve game this week. In the Ones, we lost young first gamer Nick Shannon to a serious ankle break, and the long wait for an ambulance saw the game finish under lights in tough conditions. In a goal-for-goal last quarter Narre snuck a centre clearance in the last minute, and a long goal by Borno got us up by 3 points. Our younger players continue to show improvement and our team s resolve under pressure was outstanding a hallmark of Narre sides over the past few years. All the best to Nick with his recovery, and well done to our other senior debutants in Round 2 Daniel Uzarevic and Justin Marriot. Our Twos had a solid seven goal win, and our Under 18s also outplayed Hampton Park to win by 13 goals. Unfortunately Narre s Colts had our colors lowered by St Johns by four goals. Great weather, great crowd and good Football. The Lions got off to a good start against Beacy and after leading by 6 goals early in the second quarter everyone thought how far the Pakenham. To their credit the Eagles had other ideas and they got within 15 points at half time. The third quarter was even and it took the Lions until into the last quarter to break away and run out winners by 45 points. Josh Winter and Clint Walker were good all day and John Atwell showed his silky skills with Dom Paynter and Jeremy Spider Everett also solid performers all day. The Seconds had their chances but need to improve and the Under 18 s had a day they would like to forget. Great to see the Colts finally play but they played a very good side in St John s who ran out easy winners. This week we are at Casey Fields against Cranbourne for 4 games of football. 29 Casey Cardinia Netball Preview Thelma and Louise present White Line Fever No. 3 L ast week I predicted wet and wild weather for Saturday s games, and quite thankfully, I couldn t of been any more incorrect!! Last weekend turned on one of the finest days for netball and it was a joy to be at Casey Fields to watch the Cranbourne V Keysborough clash, a game that did not disappoint! Keysborough s goaling combination of GA Jo Amott and GS Sophie Bartlett is going to cause headaches for defence ends over the league. With Barlett s obvious height, and Amott s creative play making skills, you have a combination that is well complimented. These two shooters ripped up the talented Cranbourne defence end on Saturday to lead their team to a great 5 goal win after a tight four quarters of netball. Amott in particular was unstoppable on my favourite youngster, the talented Cranbourne GD Tara Cecil, and lead her team to victory with a Best on Court performance. Cranbourne were not without some great players, with GS Andrea Meyers and GA Suzi Hape combining well. Meyers was Cranbourne s best with some accurate shooting for four quarters until the closing few minutes, where she missed four sitters to give Keysborough the lead they needed to take out the game. Meyers is new to the MPNFL and plays with the Southern Saints in the VNL competition. Cranbourne however are still going to be a force to be reckoned with, even though they havn t produced a win as yet. Senior player Lenny Zuniga was out with an injury last week and Cranbourne really missed her leadership on court. Coach Ally Hook, who is looking very fit this year, put herself into Centre in the last quarter and was the mature player the team was lacking. Still on Cranbourne, this weeks clash with Pakenham will be another opportunity for them to show that they want to be finals contenders this year. Whilst they may not win the game, if they can produce a respectable score line against the fancied Pakenham line up, then it will send a message to the rest of the league to beware. CASEY CARDINIA FOOTBALL NETBALL SHOW Saturday mornings 8.00am am 8.00 am Netball with Alison Neil 8.20 am Football with Brad Kingsbury The clash between Pakenham & Beaconsfield last week was another close encounter of the netball kind. Before the game there was a minutes silence in memory of Pakenham Life Member Pat Mandragona who sadly passed away this year. Pat was a Pakenham Netball Club stalwart and will be sadly missed by not only all the lions faithful, but also the netball community as a whole. This game was close with only a 5 goal lead by Beaconsfield at the half time change. The third quarter saw Beaconsfield pull away yet again, and they finished off the game by winning the last quarter by 3 goals for an 11 goal win over their traditional rivals. With Pakenham sporting a completely reshuffled attack end, it was a new team from the 2008 s Runners Up line up. Very tall GS Rachel Priestly used her height in GS and she was complimented well by two speedy GA s who shared court time with a ½ each in the position. Captain Michelle Webster ran the WA but was well matched up on by Beaconsfield s Kylie Clark in WD. But, it was Beaconsfield Captain Sarah Welsch who led her team from GA and was Best on Court with a solid four quarters of not only steady offensive play, but also intense defensive pressure. Pakenham s GK Kate McGowan was voted as Pakenham s best player and was awarded the commemorative Pat Mandragona Best on Court award and presented with the memorial medallion at the end of the game. This week we have some great games with the Tooradin V Devon Meadows clash looking to be the highlight of the round. Devon Meadows have had a great start to the season but will be put to the test by seasoned performers Tooradin. The history of each club couldn t be more different with Devon Meadows being one of the youngest netball clubs in the MPNFL, and Tooradin one of the oldest. It does seem likely, that this new bunch of Panthers girls could be ready to write their own history this year, and it may just be with a top five finish. If they can get this big win, their chances of making it through to September will be heightened. Beaconsfield V Keysborough should be a tight one with Keysie looking to knock off the unshakable Beacons Since 1908 MPNFL 67

On a sad note, Berwick Netball Club sends our condolences to Jeanette Mitchell and her family on the passing of her father. A GRADE No report received this week. B GRADE Berwick travelled to ROC this week and the weather was perfect for netball. B grade started with a new line up this week and took a while to settle into a rhythm of play. ROC goalers were shooting accurately making it hard for Berwick defenders to get their hands on the ball. Berwick attackers were very quiet and unsettled in the first half but adjusted to the physical Roc defenders. In the last half Berwick pulled it all together, the defenders were intercepting and combining beautifully with rebounding. The attackers picked up the pace, fighting for the ball and goaling confidently. It was a great team effort by all the girls, congratulation on holding it together and finishing strongly. C GRADE Berwick travelled to Roc on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon knowing they were going to be in for a tough game. Roc came out strong in the first quarter and had us 7 goals down. Changes in the defence and mid court saw the same turn around which then made even at half time. Steady play and quick turn overs pulled us away in the end to let us win by 5 goals. Well done to all girls. 68 MPNFL Since 1908

31 Casey Cardinia Netball 17 & Under No report received this week. 15 & Under Blue This week Berwick played ROC, the girls came out strong in the first quarter leading ROC applied more pressure in the last half but the girls were still able to increase their lead. 13 & Under Blue The Berwick team met a very tall ROC team and were a little overawed by their size in the first half finding themselves 10 down at half time. Lauren Carfora and Carly Notly were strong work in defence and Lauren Hargreaves combined well with Madeline Bourke in goals to fight back in the second half. The final score saw Berwick going down by 4 goals. Congratulations to Zach Allen on his first game and to Lauren Hargreaves for a best on court performance. 15 & Under White The Berwick girls started to work well together and continued to apply pressure throughout the game. The goalers, Nicole, Emily and Maddy did a fantastic job. 13 & Under White No report received this week Dandenong U17 s An extremely good game was played this week by the under 17 Dandenong team. Berwick managed to win the first three quarters but lost the fourth quarter on goal difference. We had a great team this week with excellent shooting skills from Stephanie Whiteman and Shannon Brennan but equally excellent was our defence players (Jade Hawthorn, Beth Batton, Emily Savige and Rochelle Samuhel) who played exceptional and enabled our centre court players (Alexandra Gawley and Cassandra Monteath) to feed the ball to our shooters great team effort was shown by all which was reflected in the final score. Rookie Casey Cecil took the court for her first A grade game in WA and Played a great game...well done Casey. Thank you to the umpires Di Dixon and Sharon Hook. B Grade The girls played a good game-consistancey is the key for us now. We had the opportunity to stay in touch on the scoreboard...keysie s accurate goaling saw them over the line in the end...the girls have a fantastic attitude towards each other, they continue to work hard together to get it right!! There work ethic is fantastic and as a coach they are a pleasure to coach, they never give up!!! Well done girls!!!! Player of the match Emma Dundon. Special metion to Jen Allen - when she came on she applied great pressure on their accurate goalers and created alot of turnovers. Thank you to the umpires-di Dixon and Sam Downey C Grade After a draw last week this week the girls were determined to come out strong and get their first win on the board. With a few silly passes we found ourselves to be down at quarter time. In the second quarter the girls came out firing and played some great netball to take back the lead. For the next half the game was very even, often goal for goal. In the end we came away with a win, by one goal. Special mention to our defense end who all were very dominating. Best on court to Lauren Clausen and Sam Carter. 17s BYE CRANBOURNE A Grade Thank you to Keysie for a fantastic game played in great spirit and great intensity. We had the opportunity to clinch the match in the last quarter a couple of small errors saw keysie come away with the 4 points. The team is doing everything right, consistant defensive turnovers, accurate goaling, great court plays, we are working hard and playing at high intensity. We now need to step up another level and play consisitant 4 x 15 min quarters and capitalize on our turnovers Player of the Match Jess. Special mention to Tara Cecil for her work rate and ability to turn the ball over in the defence end, and also to Tara Mudrinsky for her consistant intensity Tara is a little work horse who never stopped!! great game girls... 32 Casey Cardinia Netball 15 s Congratulations to the girls on a great win today. This week we welcome back a familiar face to he club in Emily Neeson. The girls really worked hard during this game to fix the mistakes made in last weeks game. It was a very different side we were watching. Special mention to Jess throughout the centre who was always there chasing the ball. Great work by our goaling end and defense end. Lets see if we can keep up again this week girls! Best on court to Teegan Armstrong. 13 s The sun was shining and it was actually warm down at Casey Fields for our 1st home game. It was a great game by all the girls who pulled together to play as a team. Each player had an individual task they had to work on from last weeks game and they did it. Across the whole court all the girls stood up in each position they played and set out for a good win 49-3 against Berwick White. Special mention to the goalers Maddie Baker, Rahni Samason and Nat Sparks for very accurate goaling each only missing a couple. BOC went to Rahni Samason for great goaling and good movements down the court. Well done, GO EAGLES! DOVETON A Grade Congratulations on a great game...the game was played in great spirits by both teams...with the mixture of young age, agility, strength combined with experience the team just keeps improving every week. Many thanks to the supporters who got behind this terrific game. Well done to Vanessa San Jose for player of the match. B Grade With much more determination and focus the girls came out ready to take on the Redbacks. With Linda giving a great drive down the centre court it had opened up the game from previous weeks. Kate, Rose and Jess also worked hard in the centre court. Bec and Bern worked hard in defence the whole game and are to be congratulated on their workload to till the final siren. It may of been a loss but it certainly was a new game for us - one with many fine learning points. Congratulations on terrific team spirit. Well done to all the players - special mention to player of the match in round three, Melinda Wilson. C Grade In what turned out to be a magical day for netball, we came away with a convincing win against Hampton Park. A shaky first quarter saw HP take the lead at ¼ time, with our goalers battling a very tall and strong defensive line. We struggled to get control in the 2nd quarter, with some basic unforced errors being our undoing. To HP s credit they capitalised on our every misdemeanour, but for the most part 70 MPNFL Since 1908 (once we got some flow and settled in positions) we began putting together a solid team game in the 2nd half. Our defence played a hard-fought, consistent game and provided excellent back-up, midcourt kept the turnovers coming and fed the goalers steadily, and the gaolers played a smart, accurate game. Some very exciting possibilities emerging from this C Grade squad early days ladies..early days! And as I don my fluoro mankini, in my best Borat impersonation..for you Kel High Five!! Big thanks to Larry Simpson for his hospitality and to HP for their spirit of competition. Under 17 s What a wonderful start to our game against Hampton Park on Saturday, the girls went out really strong and I could not have asked for anything more, their defensive pressure the whole way down the court was great and they capitalised off the turn overs that they made. Unfortunately we did loose in the end which was partly due to lack of fitness and some silly passes. Bad luck girls great effort by all, lets just go out there next week and do what we do best next week. Best on court went to Kayla. Under 15 s Last week we came up againsvery determined Hampton Park. With some changes in the first quarter and players having to play out of position due to one of our defenders being injured we were a bit lost. But you girls stood up and finished the quarter off well. Thank you Bianca for putting your hand up and saying I want to play defence, I am ready. We went into the second quarter and you all lifted, Maddy you got your eye in and Bianca - well what can I say! What a exceptional game you had in defence, you and Michaela work well together and held their goalers. At half time I wanted you girls to be 3 goals up so you all set your minds to it and we were 8 goals up going into the last quarter. Kayla, your drives and passing were also fantastic today and you showed that you can play both ends of the court. Michaela s defence were again fantastic. Shannon and Taylor, your determination and drive amazes me - you never give up. Talarna, beautiful goaling and moving in the circle and you kept that smile on all day - well done. This week we also welcome Kaitlin back from injury and wish Jemma a very, very fast recovery. Best on Court Bianca Samperi - Well done. 33 Casey Cardinia Netball SUPPORTERS GROUP PAKENHAM Pakenham hosted the first home game of the season to Beaconsfield which is always a greatly anticipated day of netball with both teams historically being identified as benchmark for the league. With Beaconsfield winning the three junior teams, it was a very determined C grade coming on to turn the day around. Pakenham took the honours with both B and C and A grade was a very exciting rematch of the 2008 Grand Final however went down by 11 goals at the final whistle. Saturday was a very emotional day for the Pakenham Lions Netball Club paying tribute to a valued life member Pat Mandragona who unfortunately passed away in the offseason. It was a tremendous turn out of players (netballer and footballers) and supporters to be alongside Pats family and fellow life members during the minutes silence and a best on court award in her name was a wonderful mark of respect by all. A Grade Pakenham A Grade has shown some fantastic signs in their match against reigning Premiers Beaconsfield on Saturday. With a team still trying to find consistency early in the season, the encounter against an established and experienced Beaconsfield unit was going to give the Pakenham side a true indication as to their progress so far in the season. The match started at a furious pace, with Beaconsfield taking an early lead, but Pakenham settled, and on the back of 8/8 from Cathy Leeves, reduced the deficit to only 2 goals at 1/4 time. A few positional changes altered Pakenham s momentum, and it was the third quarter, with Beaconsfield piling on 17 goals to 12, where the game was ultimately decided. Beaconsfield scored an additional 13 goals to 10 to finally take out the match Best on Court went to Kate McCowan for a tireless 4 quarter effort and Rachel Priestly who shot 29 goals from 35 83%. Overall, a great team effort, and with a few more games under their belt, Pakenham should find the consistency and control it requires to be a competitive side leading into the middle of the season. B Grade After a disappointing start to the season against Keysborough the B grade girls were keen to get a win on the board against strong rivals Beaconsfield. The girls had a shaky start to the match but steadied their ball movement and kept their heads to go into quarter time 4 goals down. A great second quarter with solid defence in the ring and great goaling by the goalers had Pakenham leading at half time by 1 goal. The fresh legs that come on in the second half saw the whole team continue the one on one pressure all the way down the court with some great passages of play and finishing the game off well - running out winners by 7 goals. Pakenham 50 v Beaconsfield 43. Well done to all the girls on a great win. Best on court Raegan O Brien and Jill Tivendale. C Grade The girls started the 1st quarter with determination and confident for a win. Pakenham was ahead at the half time break playing good netball. Changes at 1/2 time unsettled the girls and Beacy applied pressure causing Pakenham to hesitate causing inaccurate passes. Pakenham worked hard to regain their confidence finishing with a well earned win. BOC Jess Christie and Aleisha Taurua. Under 17 s Saturday s clash with Beaconsfield was always going to be a tough one for the players and unfortunately they started off slow and the opposition got a jump early in the game and eventually ran out winners for the day. To the teams credit they didn t drop their head but continued to work hard and improved as the game went on! It was a great first game effort. Best on court went to Stephanie Van Dam. Under 15 s Saturdays game was an excellent game of netball to watch and be involved in. The game was a much tighter tussle than the scoreboard would suggest. Our girls ran hard and worked extremely well together, working the ball around until they got the option they were looking for. Bec and Jac did an outstanding job in defence although they were undersized compared to their opponents. The second and third quarters were tight encounters with the game going goal for goal. Gabby provided defensive support for Bec and Jac in the WD position and Zoe ran hard through the mid court. All girls should be proud of their performance as their opponents Beaconsfield are a highly skilled team that set a high benchmark for the rest of the competition. Final score Beaconsfield 33 defeated Pakenham 16. Under 13 s The Pakenham team took a half to get settled into their game with the first half being a struggle to get down the court against a strong Beaconsfield team. During the last half of the game pressure became stronger down the court with Nicole Green and Emily Crick trying their hardest down the defensive end and Jess Cox playing a brilliant game all up the court. Unfortunately Beaconsfield were the stronger team winning Awards --Nicole Green - Pakenham Chocolate Shop Award, Jess Cox - Canteen Award, Lauren Bateman - Mars Award. Good luck to all our sides today against Devon Meadows and to Cristian and the footy boys. GO SEAGULLS!! ROC A Grade The ROC girls put together a great 4 quarters of netball with various playing combinations once again tested, all of which proved successful. Nic and Kara started off with excellent movement in the ring and 72 MPNFL Since 1908 accurate goaling. The defensive pressure, turnovers and drive from defence through Laura, Mel and Michelle was fantastic. Meg s hard running and Amy s ball placement in the ring was great to see from the sidelines. What appeared to be an unlikely spot for tall Sarah into WA, proved to be a great one at that. B Grade B Grade played strong in the first three quarters, and showed that working together as a team works wonders. ROC s strong point was their defensive end and strong leads to the ball, to hold a lead by 3 at ¾ time. ROC went into the final term without the intensity and level headedness they had held the start of the game, allowing little mistakes to turn their confidence upside down and consequently the lead slip away. I m sure that with 100% effort from all players for all four quarters next week against Doveton, will see four points on the board for this talented squad. Final scores ROC 30 Berwick 41 C Grade ROC came out firing in the first quarter with strong defensive pressure, effective use of the ball into attack by Lauren and Tammy, and accurate goaling by Jess and Elise to lead by 6 goals. ROC seemed to be rattled in the second quarter, when a more determined and physical Berwick side came out, reducing the lead back to level. ROC s lack of confidence in their own ability are what resulted in the loss to a more determined Berwick. This side has much potential to beat some very competitive side s, and this loss should see them more determined to win next week against a strong line up in Doveton. Final scores ROC 27 Berwick Under17 s The girls started off well and gave Berwick a good run in the first quarter. Zoe and Naomi made great options for the attackers and created many opportunities for the team. The defensive pressure from the whole team was great but not enough to stop the stronger Berwick side. Coaches Award went to Tylah and Tahlia. Under 15 s ROC came up against a tough opposition and found it difficult to feed to the gaolers. There was some good passages of play which lead to some fantastic shots from Sarah. Defensively Emily, Ebony and Paige caused some goo turnovers which unfortunately we weren t able to capitalise on. Under 13 s The team applied great pressure on the ball today which resulted in many turnovers throughout the game. In the first half, the team worked well together by using the space and driving towards the ball. The fantastic efforts of the first half need to be applied to the whole game to reap greater benefits and remain in control for the full four quarters Congratulations to all eleven players on their efforts and contributions to the win. McDonalds Award Mikaela, Subway Award Jaz. Final score ROC 24 Berwick 18.
