Spotlight on Sport gives codes and clubs a platform to connect with the wider community via an effective and competitive media brand. Spotlight on Sport provides a month of on-air promotion, with a different sport featured each month. The campaign was kicked off in July with Hockey, followed by Multisport in August. The sport of the month is offered the opportunity to speak about their sport on More FM s popular breakfast show with Craig Hanford and Sue Miller. The campaign is supported by a 30-second commercial played throughout the month, created especially for that sport. Mark Stoneman and Aaron Cox recently spent some time in the studio with Craig and Sue, speaking about the success of Multisport and encouraging new participants to give the sport a go. Nice work Multisport! Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat him as he could be, and he will become what he should be. Jimmy Johnson

2 Sport Wanganui s Club G.O.L.D. group recently celebrated 21 years of behaving true to their name: Growing Old and Living Dangerously. Club GOLD is a seniors walking group who meet every Tuesday and Thursday morning at the Splash Centre. The group takes various walking routes for approximately one hour and returns to the Splash Centre for a well-earned hot drink and social camaraderie. Long-time member Audrey Curran says, Club GOLD are always looking for new members and anyone is very welcome to join. We re a happy social group and we ve decided unanimously that it is a great way to keep fit. Perhaps it s fitting that the group acquire the new name Growing Old and Looking Devastating! The special milestone was celebrated by past and current members with lunch at the Brickhouse Restaurant. Sport Wanganui CEO Danny Jonas and Sport Wanganui Club GOLD coordinator Deb Byers were there to celebrate the occasion with the walkers. Danny Jonas acknowledged the group s achievement, We are proud that you have continued to stay active, and the relationships that you have formed through the group while doing so are really valuable, and of course keeping yourselves active has clearly been beneficial you all still look 21 years old! The Sport Wanganui Club GOLD group are based at the Splash Centre Wanganui. More information can be found on the Sport Wanganui website or contact Club GOLD Coordinator Deb Byers on The Lotto Volunteer Thank A Sport Maker campaign has clocked up a year of rewarding sport volunteers! Here are some of our recent winners: June Simon Butters Football Jo Gribben - Netball July Doug Cranston Obstacle Racing Terry Tanoa Basketball (pictured below) August Grant O Shanassy Swimming Darren Andrews Dragon Spirit Taekwon-Do The Thank a Sport Maker campaign is a partnership between the Lotto Volunteer Foundation, Sport NZ and Sport Wanganui. Nominating is easy: send a thank you card to your sport maker via the Sport Wanganui website. Anyone can send a card, to as many sport makers as they wish, and from any area of sport volunteering coaches, referees, managers, club administrators, parent helpers, shirt-washers, van drivers and more. NEW EVENT FOR MASTERS GAMES The New Zealand Masters Games are on their way, and included in the programme will be an exciting new event from Sport Wanganui! The Urban Assault is designed especially for the bold, the brave, and the mentally astute. With a varied and fun obstacle course, the Urban Assault will take place right in the heart of the city, incorporating Cooks Gardens and surrounding areas. 3 Whanganui Kayak, a division of the Whanganui Multisport Club, have recently been successful in procuring NZCT support for funding the salary of a professional kayak coach and would like to welcome Gabor Szabo to the team as the newly appointed Regional Coach. Gabor hails from Szeged, Hungary and began his new role on September 1 st. Gabor comes with an impressive resume and a wealth of knowledge. From 1999 to 2012 he was the Head Kayak Coach at Hungary s largest kayak-canoe club. During that time he also coached at the ICF s Talent programme and was the coach of the Iranian National Team (U23 men). Most recently Gabor coached the Azerbaijan National Team (Junior, U23). Due to the Whanganui Kayak Club s substantial membership growth in recent years, current volunteer coaches are providing approximately 50 hours per week to coach beginner paddlers through to New Zealand age group team members. Often these volunteer coaches lack the support to take junior athletes further. The large increase in number of athletes on the water has driven the need to have in place coaching priorities within the development plan that the club initiated with Sport Wanganui over two years ago. The next step for this coach focus has led to the process of hiring a professional coach with a region wide focus. The primary objective of employing an elite level Kayak coach with the right skills and expertise is to deliver a structured programme that provides clear pathways for young athletes of all abilities. It will also provide an up-skill programme for current volunteer coaches. This will allow regional club coaches to gain a greater knowledge of technique and style that will be taught regionally as a High Performance feeder system and provide real benefit for club members. We believe the coach position will greatly enhance paddler s opportunities to reach their potential to develop their skill and potentially create opportunities to become future world class athletes. Welcome to the team Gabor!

4 HELPING hand for Future champions Wanganui has an abundance of talented young sports people who have the ability to compete at the very highest level; sometimes they just need an extra helping hand to assist them in achieving their potential on the world stage. The Future Champions Trust is aimed at giving local people and businesses an opportunity to support our talented sporting youth with a hand up to reach their full potential at an international level in their chosen sport. The Trust is an opportunity for local people and businesses to invest in the region s talented sporting youth, and to support the development of athletes who could potentially achieve at international level. These youth are our future sporting elite, and creating tomorrow s champions starts today. The next funding round will open on 1st September Athletes interested in applying to the Trust should visit the website to assess the criteria for and access an application form, or call in to Sport Wanganui for the relevant forms. Inline Speed Skater Jessica van Bentum (pictured above) was one of the first five successful applicants, along with Mountain Biker Ben Watkins and canoeists Max Brown, Aiden Nossiter and Toby Brooke. FAREWELL JB JB Phillips recently hung up his boots and retired after working for the Wanganui Rugby Union for the last 10 years. He will be missed around our offices but we know he ll be in for plenty of visits. JB and wife Poppy are now enjoying a well deserved cruise holiday. Riding a bike seems a fairly common activity for most kids, but just because it seems natural doesn t mean it comes naturally! Recently a group of 15 adults took part in a two-day training course on teaching children how to competently handle a bike. The NZQA accredited course was coordinated by Sport Wanganui, and delivered by Chris Foggin of Bike NZ. Classroom activities were followed by practical sessions at the Wanganui Velodrome, and out and around Wanganui streets. Day One of the course featured the Learn to Ride programme which focuses on instruction to children under the age of ten. Learn to Ride is delivered in safe spaces away from the road and includes helmet fitting, mounting and dismounting, getting safely around corners and obstacles, distributing weight and breaking safely. Day Two covered Introduction to Road which is designed for teaching children over ten how to cycle on roads, with traffic. Did you know the recommended age to ride on the road without adult supervision is ten years or older? The course participants had a wide range of cycling abilities, and included representatives from NZ Police, Whanganui Bike Users Group, Wanganui and Taumaranui Cycling Clubs, Sport Manawatu, Sport Taranaki and Sport Wanganui. Marton s Mihiterina Hika was one of the participants, upskilling her teaching knowledge in order to deliver the Learn to Ride module as part of Sport Wanganui s Fundamental Movement Skills programme in primary schools. Mihi is currently working in schools around the Rangitikei region, and has been delivering Gymsports and Football. She is now looking forward to the new challenge of teaching Learn To Ride: The course was awesome. For an adult (like myself) who hasn t been on a bike for something like ten years, and didn t learn those skills at school, the information that was provided was excellent. What I picked up on the course as an adult now makes it easier for me to pass on the instruction to children. Mihi will be delivering the Learn To Ride programme in three Rangitikei schools in Term 4 of this year. Sport Wanganui s Bike Development Officer, Norman Gruebsch organised the sessions and was pleased with the results, It s all about improving the capability for cycling in our community. Right: Chris Foggin of Bike NZ at the Wanganui Velodrome with the 15 adults that are now equipped to teach cycling skills to children.

5 KEITH STREET TAKES UP FMS One of the new schools to join the Sport Wanganui Fundamental Movement Skills programme in 2014 is Keith Street School, one of the biggest primary schools in the city. The Year 3 students in the school have been doing Football as their option this term and the programme concluded in week 6 with a mini-football tournament. The four-aside format for this tournament ensured that every child got the opportunity to put into practice the skills acquired over this five week module. This was very evident as the games were close with some outstanding individual and team performances! As expected, we have uncovered some remarkable athleticism and talent! SPORTS EXCHANGE SUCCESS Thursday August 21 st saw the annual sports exchange between Wanganui Intermediate School (W.I.S) and Highlands Intermediate (New Plymouth) this year hosted by Wanganui Intermediate School. The competition included 11 different codes ranging from Chess and Debating to Mountain Biking and Cup Stacking as well as the mainstream winter codes. Competition was close across most of the activities with W.I.S coming out the overall winner 15.5 points v 8.5 points. One of the successes for W.I.S came in the Boys 1 st XI Football (photograph below), where the local lads capped a very successful year, winning 5-2 in difficult windy conditions. Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they ve got a second wind. William James Head down to McIntyre Reserve to support our Rangitikei Tough Kids!

6 Futsal Sport Wanganui also ran a secondary school Futsal league on a Wednesday evening at Wanganui High School and on a Friday after school at Wanganui City College. This league involved 80 students, both girls and boys from Wanganui City College, Wanganui High School and Wanganui Girls College. Both venues had an awesome atmosphere with music playing, all students enjoying themselves and encouraging each other, displaying awesome skills and talent! With the high interest in futsal, this league will kick off again in term three, The futsal midweek league is going great and is super fun Logan Hughes, WHS student. Badminton The Badminton midweek league was very popular with 72 secondary school students from five schools; Wanganui Collegiate School, Wanganui Girls College, Wanganui High School, Rangitikei College and Cullinane College taking part on a Friday after school over eight weeks. Offering both a beginners and experienced grade and costing only $5 ensured the league was inclusive of all players and there were no barriers to sign up and get involved. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to play similar skilled players from a number of other secondary schools. Term 4 Term four will see the return of KiwiSport-funded Midweek Leagues with Volleyball planned for secondary, intermediate and primary schools and also Tennis for secondary schools. These leagues are open to all students. Students are encouraged to talk to their school sport coordinator to register their interest and sign up! Rangitikei College offered a six-week hockey programme to Year 9 and 10 girls who were not participating in sport but were keen to give Hockey a go. Rangitikei College chose Hockey as their focus for the Kiwisport Collaborative Secondary School participation project which focuses on getting more young people participating in organised sport. The Hockey programme included learning the basics of Hockey including skills, drills and fun games with the guidance and coaching of Kathy Norman (Central Community Hockey Manager) and Pippa Norman who is in the NZ U21 hockey team. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the programme with the majority wanting to play next year and also wanting to try the summer Hockey competition. This is fantastic as Rangitikei College have not had a girl s team in four years. The college is very excited about this outcome and so is Sport Wanganui! Sport Wanganui s Pathway to Industry initiative was successfully launched in June, with the first intake of five trainees for the pilot programme. Pathway to Industry is a partnership between Sport Wanganui and the Ministry of Social Development. Over 13 weeks, the programme provides support and assistance to individuals who are interested in working in the sport and recreation industry. The course includes Skills Active study and workplace training: all of the trainees have completed their First Aid Certificate and are progressing towards a National Certificate in Sport and Recreation. An exciting result of the pilot programme is that three trainees have secured employment, and one other is in a work experience role that will likely lead to employment. For the trainees, the programme has provided new experiences, new skills, and some fantastic opportunities to make connections within the industry they are aspiring to.

8 Athletics Wanganui in conjunction with Sport Wanganui are running a free Athletics Officials Development Programme. We are excited about providing an opportunity to develop volunteers in our community and we encourage both adults and secondary school age students to come forward to register your interest in learning more about Athletics officiating. It will be a fun and enjoyable programme that will cover basic background and rules as well as practical experience in jumps, throws and track. There is also an exciting opportunity to help out at the NZSS Track & Field and Road Race Champs at Cooks Gardens on 6 th and 7 th of December which will be a great event to be a part of. For more information, queries or to register your interest, please contact Nicole Dryden at Sport Wanganui: or nicole@sportwanganui.co.nz Sport Wanganui is working in collaboration with Kokohuia School, Tupoho School and Wanganui City College to encourage participation and involvement in sport and triathlon. The Tri Whanganui project has been created as a pilot programme. The programme is aimed at secondary school students and will be delivered during Term 4, The emphasis will be on team work and positive involvement from community and whanau. The aim for Sport Wanganui is to host a local triathlon at the end of Term 4 for participants of the programme to compete in, in a fun and supportive environment. Some of these students may choose to participate in the TriMaori to be held on Saturday 22 November 2014 at Lake Karapiro. As part of the Tri Whanganui programme, Sport Wanganui will help with the development and delivery of the programme to encourage sustainability and capability within the school and wider community. This will involve a coach training programme aimed at the teacher, whanau and community. The benefits we can expect to achieve by delivering this programme to local schools are: Teaching the students the benefits of health and well-being (hauora) and activity. Getting the community and whanau involved. Making the sport of triathlon a positive and rewarding experience for students. Encourage student involvement in sport and cycling.

10 Manic Mayhem is now a regular feature at the Splash Centre! Manic Mayhem will be held every Friday for 8-14 year olds and will feature a themed party once a month. Kicking off the themed parties will be a Blue themed party on the 26 th of September where everyone is encouraged to come dressed in blue to support Blue September. See you there! WBGGC NEWS GYMNASTS HEAD TO NATIONALS Wanganui Boys & Girls Gym Club have four gymnasts who have qualified for the 2014 New Zealand National GymSports Championships. Jamie O Hagan, Jonathan Maples, Genna Maples and Millie Manning will travel to Auckland to compete at the Nationals which will held 7-11 October. HARD WORK PAYS OFF Wanganui gymnast Millie Manning has earned the right to attend the Women's Artistic Gymnastics Prime Invitational in Singapore in November after a strong performance at the Auckland-Manukau championships. Wanganui club head coach Kelly Taylor-Ward said the teenager competed strongly, making personal best efforts to come first on the beam and place third on both the bar and floor routine, earning a silver for the overall Step 9 competition. "This is fantastic news, she's been very focused in her training and I'm so pleased her hard work has paid off." Taylor-Ward said Manning deserved her shot. Well done Millie! Jason Bills and Adam Nevard are the masters of maintenance at the Splash Centre, and their work is a crucial part of the Splash Centre s success story. Managing around 1,027,000 litres of water in the complex, their daily routine starts with a wealth of tests including water and air temperatures, chlorine levels, calcium hardness, alkalinity, and a somewhat curious test called Total Dissolvable Solids. Special skills are needed for their roles Jason and Adam have qualifications in Water Treatment, Breathing Apparatus, and Chemicals, to name a few. Dealing with the balance tanks and circulating pumps under the training pool takes a considerable amount of mettle for those that don t appreciate small spaces, but it also requires sound knowledge of good practice. Both men have a Confined Spaces qualification which allows them to work in these areas safely. Trained and qualified in engineering, Jason was volunteering on the PS Waimarie nine years ago when he heard of an opportunity in the Splash Centre s maintenance department. Adam joined the Splash Centre seven years ago as a pool lifeguard, but his interest in automotive engineering made him a prime candidate for the maintenance department too. Of particular note is that almost all repairs and maintenance are carried out in-house; Jason and Adam have the capability to fix anything in the complex themselves. Parts are ordered in where necessary, but their own expertise means that repairs can be done quickly and efficiently on site. Analytical reports are carried out every month to show that there are no bugs in the water. Testing samples are taken by the Wanganui District Council and sent to Wellington for analysis. In Jason s time, all samples have been reported bugfree, another record to be proud of. Says Jason, The Splash Centre s pools are operated to New Zealand standards. Jason enjoys dealing with the public and is happy to go that little bit extra to reassure customers, doing spot pool temperature checks so that he can respond to queries with honesty. Sport Wanganui proudly manages the Splash Centre in partnership with the Wanganui District Council. For more information about Sport Wanganui visit or find them on Facebook.

Sport Governance is a service to support our stakeholders with the leadership, management and development of sport. The groups we work with range from Councils to Regional Sports Organisations, to sports clubs and also to schools.
