1 RTÉ Man of Match Award for Jonny Congratulations to Jonny Cooper on winning the RTÉ/Eircom Man of the Match award following his terrific display in last Sunday s Leinster SFC quarter final against Laois. Members Subscriptions Members are reminded that subscriptions for the current year became due and payable immediately following the Club s AGM last October. All GAA Registrations were submitted on 1 st April as per regulation, and any member whose membership was unpaid on that date was not included in this Registration as per Club policy. The consequences of this are that unregistered players are no longer insured to play or train and do so at their own risk. In addition, teams playing unregistered players could be adjudged an illegal team and suffer the loss of points and even elimination from competitions. Members subs can be paid in the bar on Wednesday nights between 6.30pm and 9pm and again on Saturday mornings from 9am to 11am. Payments by card, cheque and cash will be accepted. Subscriptions can also be paid at the club office, Mon to Fri, 9am to 1pm. 13ú Meitheamh

2 Conor is Hero of the Future Congratulations to Conor McHugh named this week as the Cadbury Hero of the Future for Conor pictured with his parents Shay and Noreen and Des Ó Dubhlainn Chairman CLG Na Fianna Conor s exploits for the Dublin All-Ireland winning side have helped him win the award after the Dubs win over Roscommon in the last month s final.. Conor shone in that final, scoring 1-6 from play and it followed up his brilliant display when scoring 0-3 in the All-Ireland semifinal win over Cavan. He had previously weighed in with 0-8 when in action during Dublin s Leinster U21 winning campaign. Conor saw off stiff competition for the award in teammate Cormac Costello, Roscommon stars Diarmuid Murtagh and Thomas Corcoran, Cavan s Michael Argue and Cork s dual player Alan Cadogan. Conor s selection as winner was made by a panel of judges that included former Kerry footballer Tomás Ó Sé, former Dublin Manager Paul Caffrey and TG4 journalist Micheal Ó Domhnaill. 13ú Meitheamh

3 Weekend Action Following a great week on the park with strong performances and good wins recorded at all adult football levels, the weekend sees even more football action. On Saturday, both Seniors and Inters are in league action at 6.30pm with Seniors playing Thomas Davis in Mobhi Road and Inters playing St. Marks in Collinstown. On Sunday at 11am, AFL5 s play Thomas Davis in Mobhi Road and AFL8 s play St. Josephs OCB in Collinstown and at 3pm AFL10 s travel to Rolestown to play Fingal Ravens. 4 Playing Rules of Hurling Reproduced below is an Interpretation of Rule in relation to the Playing Rules of Hurling, approved by Central Council that will come into effect on Saturday 14 June Having considered the current implementation of our rules in respect of the taking of penalty pucks and free pucks from the 20m line, Coiste Bainisti was concerned that it was endangering the safety of our players and that urgent action was necessary. What Central Council has approved through this Interpretation is a temporary measure to take us through to next Congress is a year in which Congress can make playing rule changes and every unit of our Association will have the opportunity, through motions, to put forward its proposals on the taking of penalty pucks, 20m free pucks etc. We have no doubt that, at Congress, we will reach a consensus on a better way of dealing with the concerns on player safety that prompted this Interpretation. 13ú Meitheamh

5 Rules 2.2 Exceptions (i) and (ii), 2.3, 2.5, 4.16(b) (1) The terms taken or retaken in Rules 2.2 Exceptions (i) and (ii) and 2.3 shall mean the ball being struck. (2) A player taking a penalty or a 20m free puck, may bring the ball back up to seven metres from the 20m line for the purposes of making a traditional run at the ball, but shall strike the ball on or outside the 20m line but not inside it. Exception: In the context of Rule 2.5, if a player taking a penalty or free puck on the actual 20m line fails to lift the ball at the first attempt or fails to strike it with the hurley, and that action causes the ball to marginally cross inside the 20m line, the player, as provided for in this Rule, shall be allowed to strike the ball on the ground without delay. (3) (a) The players defending a penalty or free puck awarded on the centre point of the 20m line shall stand on their goal-line and may not move towards the 20m line until the ball has been actually struck. Lifting the ball with the hurley does not constitute striking the ball. (b) The players defending a free puck awarded on the 20m line at a point other than on the centre point of that line shall stand a minimum of 20m from the point of award of the free and may not move closer to that point of award until the ball has been actually struck. Lifting the ball with the hurley does not constitute striking the ball (4) This Interpretation shall, in accordance with Rule 3.43, Official Guide Part 1, have the force of Rule until Congress 2015, when the issues will be further addressed by way of Motion(s). Points to note *************************************** (I) Where a player taking a penalty or a 20m free strikes the ball from inside the 20m line, the penalty shall be as in Rule 4.25 (i) (ii) Cancel free puck or sideline puck Throw in ball where the foul occurred, except as provided under Exceptions (v) and (vi) of Rule 2.2 (ii) (iii) After a foul, play is restarted by a free puck or a throw in where the foul occurred (Rule 2.2 Playing Rules of Hurling). Therefore, where play is re-started by a free puck, the ball must be struck at the point where the foul occurred. As in football, the player taking the free puck may bring the ball back as far as he wishes for the purposes of making a run before striking the ball. No free may be struck from inside the 20m line other than as provided for in Exception stated in (2) above. Effective from Saturday, 14 th June ú Meitheamh

6 Na Fianna Mini Leagues Na Fianna s Mini Leagues, now in their 32 nd year, has enjoyed very strong numbers again this year as more and more children, and parents, have signed up for two weeks of great fun in what has been near perfect weather with only one wet night.hope that hasn t put the mockers on things for the weekend and next week! Mini Leagues on again tomorrow morning, starting at 9.15am and will run through the week culminating in the Family Day on Sunday 22 nd June when among other novelties and general fun, the Mini Leagues finals and presentations will take place in Na Fianna. More details next week on the programme for the Family Day but pencil it in now and prepare to answer the call for volunteering on the day to help make the day the success it has always been. Anyone still not registered can do so tomorrow morning but the advice is to get there early so that registrations can be made in time for matches to follow their schedule. 7 Handball News On Friday the 23rd of May, three mentors and eight budding handballers set out from the club to Williamstown County Galway. We settled into our accommodation after feeding the lads and rested up for an early start Saturday morning. We had our first game in Williamstown at 8.45am and in Dunmore, 15 miles from Williamstown, at 9.15am. Williamstown hosts an annual One-Wall tournament and we had played one-wall for the first time on the previous Friday in St Brigid's. It's a new form of Handball sweeping the country and is being played in lots of schools and clubs around the country. The Na Fianna group was made up of under 12 and under 14 boys, and it was our first time to bring such a young group on tour. Everyone played very well and all got stronger as they progressed.our two under 14 lads Aidan McCullough and Fionn Mc Fhinn both battled but were up against players nearly 18 months older than them as they are just out of under 12. They were both beaten in their first round matches but played a lot better in the Plate competition and were unlucky to be beaten. There were 6 players in the under 12 singles and all played very well but were beaten in the first round. In the plate competition we did very well. The winner was from Galway and he beat Tom Gleeson in the semi final, a timed game; the player with most marks after ten minutes or first to 21. Tom was in the game until the last minute and lost out by 2 marks. The other side of the Plate competition saw Seamus Ó Cathasaigh winning 13ú Meitheamh

8 through to the Final but he did not have luck on his side losing out to the Galway lad by a single score, The mentors (Paul Grall, TJ Gleeson, Frank Daly) had a great weekend and would like to give credit to all our Young Guns for their behaviour both on and off the court. We would bring these anywhere, they were so easy to look after. Well done to our players; Seamus Ó Cathasaigh, Tom Gleeson, Thomas Nolan, Fionn Mc Fhinn, Fiach Mc Loughlin, Cillian Grall, Ciaran Heusaff and Aidan Mc Cullough. 10 Na Fianna Girls Do Dublin Proud It was a busy week for four of Na Fianna s 2002 girls. It all started with the Cumann na mbunscoil Áth Cliath finals in Croke Park last Monday and Tuesday when St. Brigids GNS and St. Vincent de Paul School were successful. Then, a Dublin selection including Na Fianna s Ciara Kavangh and Jenny Gleeson from St. Vincent de Paul and Emily Byrne and Anna Farrell from St. Brigids GNS played a Belfast selection today. This resulted in a great win for Dublin with a scoreline of 4-2 to 02 and we re reliably informed that the Na Fianna girls played a blinder! Well done ladies. Nursery Update Na Fianna s Nursery Co-ordinator Philip O Brien has penned a review of the year and is looking for the help of the boys and girls of the Na Fianna Nursery. As we draw to a close of another fantastic year, I would like to thank all the boys and girls and parents for taking part in the games this year. I would especially like to extend a huge 13ú Meitheamh

11 thank you to all the mentors and helpers for giving up their time to make Saturday morning a very special and enjoyable time for the children in their groups. One of the highlights of the year was the addition of Mark McManus our new GPO. Mark joined us in March of 2014 and from day one he took a very active role in the running and organisation of the nursery. I would like to thank Mark for his contribution and dedication to the youngest groups in the club. Mark has also ran some workshops for the mentors, the workshops are ideal for up skilling and learning new ways to coach and develop children in the skills of Football and Hurling and camogie. Mark will be hosting some of these workshops during the summer months so keep an eye out for dates and times. I would also like to extend a huge thank you to Anne O Dea for all the support and help over the last year, especially in the last few weeks with the planning and preparation for the mini leagues. Anne was the guiding light and sometimes the stick to keep us on track when planning the mini leagues. So what s next for the nursery? Following a meeting with Mark we have decided to re name the nursery from September, and who better to pick the new name for the nursery other than the players themselves. So we are inviting all the boys and girls to submit an entry for the new name and logo, all entries must be in by Sunday 22nd June mini league finals day. Entries can be submitted to your lead mentor, Mark or at the shop or bar, entry boxes will be left in the shop and bar from tomorrow morning. The winning entry or entries will receive a voucher for the club shop. Prize for best name 50 voucher and prize for the best logo 50 voucher. So please get your pens, paper colouring pencils and creative hats ready and let the ideas flow..and finally If you lost your wedding ring in Collinstown during the week it can be discretely reclaimed by contacting Róisín in the club office ( Mon-Fri 9am-1pm). 13ú Meitheamh
