The Principles of Play should be considered when we are delivering Rugby training. This helps make sure our training sessions have the correct Focus.
: THE ABILIBILY TO MOVE QUICKLY AND CHANGE DIRECTION QUICKLY TO BEAT OPPOSITION. : BREAD AND BUTTER OF THE GAME. QUALITY PASSING ALLOWS FOR FLUID MOVEMENT. : EFFECTIVE TACLKING LEADS TO QUALITY DEFENCE AND TURN OVER OPPORTUNITY AND SAFETY IN THE GAME. : QUALITY KICKING LEADS TO POINTS. IT RELIEVES PRESSURE AND CREATES BALL RETENTION OFF KICK OFF. NB: IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT IN RUGBY CERTAIN POSITIONS COMMAND DIFERENT SKILL SETS. EG PROP V WING. HOWEVER EVERY PROP SHOULD BE ABLE TO PASS EFFECTIVELY AND MAKE QUALITY DECISIONS WITH BALL IN HAND. EVERY POSITION SHOULD UPSKILL THEMSELVES WITH EACH POSITONS SKILLS SETS. (ESPECIALLY IN SEVENS
Passing Technique 1-Start with correct hand placement on Ball (The side you are passing = back of ball. Eg right hand pass= right hand at back of ball and left hand at front. 2- Hold ball around hip height with passing arm Elbow high. 3- Push through the ball whilst rotating hands to give ball forward momentum and Spin. 4- s follow through to Target. You should be looking through your hands at the flight path of the ball. Catching a Pass When catching a pass, you should have hands out reaching towards the ball. As the ball gets close to your hands, Move your hands around the ball in a way in which you want to pass it. This would be subtly different for a spin pass or push pass. Try not to bring the ball in to your chest. You should catch the ball out infront of you so you can transfer it quickly. High Ball Technique When jumping to take a high ball we need to time our jump so that we meet the ball at the highest point of our jump. When you jump 1- s should be above head reaching for the ball, Thumbs together 2- Turn your body sideways,( if jumping off your right leg turn so your left knee is facing the opposition. Do the opposite for left leg) 3- Catch the ball above your Head with both hands and as you come down to land bring the ball into your chest. NB: The following 3 slides have passing/catching sessions to supplement with Rugby. The individual should perform these as additional sessions
Wrist Throws Tennis Ball Throws Football Passing Reaction Catches Nomal Passing 30 Each 100 Throws 50 Each 50 Each Spin Pass ball into the air using minimum arm movement and only wrists and fingers. Try to get ball as high as you can. A perfect throw should land back in your hands. Focus on hand placement on Ball and Working wrists. With a partner throw a tennis ball between yourselves catching and throwing single handedly. Test your partner by throwing ball low/high/wide and different pace. NB if not partner, throw ball against the wall back and forth to each hand. Time how quickly you can perform 100 throws. Using a football stand 5/10m from a wall and pass the ball to the wall and catch the rebounding ball. If with a partner throw against the wall for your partner to catch. Focus on elbow high and hands following throug the target. With a partner throw a rugby ball between you. When you catch the ball catch in a way you can move the ball quickly the side you want to pass it. Get your partner as they throw the ball to say left hand spin or right hand pop.it is important to catch the ball properly to speed up the delivery of the pass. With Partner perform 20 qualtiypasses of each hand over a distance of about 15metres. Concentrate on hands following thorugh to target, elbow high and wieght over pass.
Grip Work Grip Work High Ball Catches Gun Slingers Single Leg Passes 4-5 goes at each Exercise 30 catches alternating sides hand and action With a partner hold the ball in one hand gripping with your fingers and get your partner to do the same and wrestle to see who can steel the ball.repeat with obth hand on side of ball, above and below ball and on the ends of the ball Holding a ball in one hand drop it to the groud and catch it with other hand. Work on squeezing ball hard to get best contact with the grab. Keep repeating for number of pass allocateed. Either with a partner or with out. Throw the ball into the air. Time your Jump to meet the ball in the air with hands above head. You should turn your body to protect youreself and get non jumping knee up into the air. NB Pracitce jumoing off both legs. Once ball is caught craddle it into your chest. 1-Place ball on the hip, holding with one hand at back of ball. With no extra body movement pass the ball to your partner. Aim to hit the partner in the chest/the target they have up. Folllow your hand through the pass finishing pointing at the target. Repeat on both hands. 2- Place ball on hip with both hands. The hip the ball is on is the same hand you should have at the back of the ball. With both hands pass the ball to your partner. Aim at the target and get as much power as you can in the pass. If you are passing right handed Stand on your left leg with left should pointing to your partner. Place the ball on your right hip with both hands. From this point pass the ball to your partner. s follow to target and right able should be high pushing through the ball. Do opposite for left hand. NB keep your other foot off the ground for all 20 passes to improve your core strength and balace.
Med Ball Passes Med Ball High Ball Catches Under the Legs Figure of Eight 2 Ball with Partner Normal Passing X 20 Catches Exercise X20 Both Ways 50 Passes X 20 each hand Using a med ball, perform the passing action to your partner using both hands. Test the distance you can pass the med ball. This will build strength in your passing. AS with the high ball catches with the rugby ball, perform the same cathc using the med ball. With the Rugby ball start with the ball between your legs in a half squat position with your hands on the ball infornt of your legs. Then pop the ball up and move your hands bind your legs and catch the ball. Get a rthym going of hands in front to behind. NB The ball should stay between your legs in the air with out hitting the ground while your hands move. Holding the ball in one hand, perform a figure of eight movement through and around your legs. Utilise your grip work on the ball to make sure the ball does not hit the ground. As you get confident move the ball quicker. Move both balls between you and your partner. When you catch the first ball throw it in the air, catch the second ball and pass it back to your partner, then catch your first ball and pass that back to your partner. NB Timing is crucial as you do not want to throw the first bll up to early or too high as it makes it harder to perform the exercise. NB Try using a rugby ball and a tennis ball Having performed all the other exercises finish off with 20 quality passes off each hand. Concentrate on every pass and make every pass your best pass. Remember to step into your pass with body weight moving through the pass. s follow through to target. Get your partner to score you out of 5 on each pass and add up your total score out of 20 passes.
