KENT PETANQUE ASSOCIATION ISSUE No.77 NOVEMBER 2012 ENGLAND YOUTH Didn t they do well! The ENGLAND Junior Team were runners-up in the Final of the European Championships held in the Belgium town of Ghent on the weekend of 2-4th November. The England Junior Team ( or Youth Team as fellow Europeans call them) were beaten 9 13 in the Final by the Luxemburg Team. The England Team played to a very high standard throughout the weekend of petanque. The team comprised, HARRY WALDIE, JOSH WILCOX, SAMANTHA THATCHER and KAYLEE THATCHER and team manager MATT BLYTON. Samantha and Kaylee Thatcher are members of Southampton City P.C. from the Southern Counties Region, Josh Wilcox is a member of Wanderers St. Faiths P.C. Norwich from the Anglia Region and Harry Waldie is a member of Rayne Swan P.C. Braintree from the Eastern Region. Matt Blyton is a member of North Stainley P.C., Ripon, of the Northern Region. Another successful gathering, very well supported, a few things discussed, and the year s winners received their trophies. Combining both the KPA and KPL Annual General Meetings has proven to be the right way to go...even so it remains a mystery why so many players and teams that take the KPL Leagues so seriously, but fail to show interest and turn up at the end of the year to pick up their well earned trophies! Again.Lordswood Club is the perfect venue for this combined meeting and the mic and pa system is needed to ensure that the large gathering follows the proceedings. The top table of organisers included MARTIN EGGLETON, DAVID BAXTER, KEN BUCHAN, COLIN SENNECK and MICK NASH. Page 1

2012 Kent Petanque Association Chairman s Report May I welcome you all to the Annual General Meeting of the Kent Petanque Association, here at Lordswood Sports and Social Club, which we are again holding in conjunction with the Kent Petanque League. We have had another successful year playing out side of the region with a good representation at international level and victories at the national level, as follows: English Petanque Association EPA Over 55's Champions Lee Jamieson and Angie Jamieson with Barry Scott Going on to represent England in the Inaugural European Championships in Copenhagen losing in the quarter finals the Spain, the eventual champions no disgrace there. Men s Qualifying Series Men s International Qualifying saw a fantastic performance from Kent players with 3 sides making the Top 8 and 25% of a 4 th side: Lee Jamieson, Marcus Hickman, Alex Bruce & Chris Watkins Kevin Spillett, Rowland Jones & Greg Davenport Scott Ashby, Nic Baxter, Gary Atkinson Dean Ashby playing with members from other regions. With Kevin, Rowland and Greg Davenport topping the series and forming the England Men s Team for 2013 and the European Championships. I wish them all the best for the forth coming year. Home Nations Representation (3 Players) Colin Gibbs - Irene Gibbs - Colin Senneck Kent Petanque Association Moving on to honours within the region: Following on from the success of last year we will present the trophies for our Regional Competitions here at the AGM. For expediency I will not go through them at this time, but will record them in my written report for completeness. Congratulations to you all. For the record: KPA Singles Champion Colin Gibbs KPA Singles Runner Up Kevin Spillett KPA Shooting Champion Ben Thompson KPA Shooting Runner Up Mike Sharratt KPA Doubles Champions Scott Ashby Sarah Huntley KPA Doubles Runners Up Dean Ashby Jack Blows KPA Triples Champions Rowland Jones, Kevin Spillet and Greg Davenport KPA Triples Runners Up Dave Hurren, Simon Mannering, Matt Horrigan, Richard Spillett KPA Chairman's Cup Winners Steve Brown, Becci Brown, Duncan Brown KPA Chairman's Cup Runners Up Phil Rixon, Mark Hopper, Tony Morez I do however want to recognise Ben Thompson our inaugural Shooting Champion, at 12 years old an absolute fantastic performance. Well done! Nord Maritime Another successful twinning event was held with our good friends from Nord. Lordswood SSC again played impeccable hosts with a great organisational set up and fantastic hospitality. My thanks to Mick Weston and all here at Lordswood. The overall result was Nord Maritime 41 wins Kent 23 wins which goes against the usual trend of the home team taking victory. The best French team was SCB (Sporting Club de Bourbourg) with 4 wins and a points difference of A consolation prize was given to the Nord Maritime team of SMPSD who failed to win any games and incurred a points difference of -26. The best Kent team was Lordswood (Simon & Wendy Mannering and Tony Burdett) who had 3 wins and +18 points difference. The Hartley team of David & Margaret Baxter and Bridget Snow also scored 3 wins and +18 points difference but were pipped to the post because their points for score was slightly worse than Lordswood. Playing in this event was again opened up to all members of the KPA rather than restricted to just those in the Top 16. We saw players representing 15 clubs from across the county from all levels which is great to see such a mix of players. I am sure everyone had an enjoyable day and that we are all looking forward to next year. Page 2

Chairman s report continued Kent Classic Our premier open triples tournament of the season was held at Lordswood Sports and Social Club who provided their usual high standard of welcome and service, and also time and effort by Mick Weston and Eric Hatfield from Lordswood P.C. and their crew of helpers In addition to our hosts, this event would not happen without the many, many hours David Baxter spends working on this over the year. My thanks go David and his team of volunteers. We had a tremendous response and were fully booked, with 43 teams actually taking to the terrain despite the rather inclement weather on the day. The quality of the competition was lifted by our visiting teams and we were please to have teams visiting us from Denmark and France and 3 England Representative sides - Men, Ladies and Juniors. The successful teams on the day were: Gold Cup Morten Junge Lasse Dithmar Daniel Presutti Morten Per Laursen Gold Plate David Turner Christian Nielson Dave Hurren Silver Cup Mat Lomas Andy Dunstall Humphrey White Chris Perry Silver Plate Sam Thatcher Kaylee Thatcher Harry Waldie Bronze Frank Charlesworth Christine Peat Chris Wilcox Ron Phelps Gold Ten10 Jamie Lewis Dean Seville Sofiane Lachani Silver Ten10 Stephen Brown Daniel Mullins Duncan Brown Well done to the Kent sides. Regional Qualifiers With the prospect of a new venue for the Inter Regional s we saw a significant increase in the number of sides seeking Representation Qualification At the completion of the Series the overall participation level was 29% up on last year increase Per cent Q % Q % Q % Q % Q % Average % I must thank The Meadow, Hartley Country Club, Lordswood and Tovil clubs and their members for the efforts they put in to host the Qualifiers. Inter Regional Championships This year saw a move of the Inter Regional Championships from Pontin s at Brean Sands to the Mill Rythe Holiday Complex on Hayling Island. From my personal view this was a very successful move in terms of the quality of the facilities. 1 st Division Saw Kent in 3 rd place with 57 wins behind Chiltern and Southern on 69 and 64 wins respectively. We were some way ahead of 4 th placed East Midlands on 42 wins. A generally good result with opportunities to have been closer to the top Juniors Our Juniors (Charlie Horrigan, Alex Spillet, Ben Thompson and Jake Mannering under the guidance of Richard King) produced a very credible result from their first visit as a squad with 6 wins from 12 finishing 4 th. They also had 3 games that they narrowly lost to 12, winning a couple of these would of had them challenging for top honours.their results included a memorable win against the overall winners Eastern. Challenge A strong squad that put in a good set of results to come Runners Up to a very strong Chiltern Region after sitting 3 rd at the end of Saturday 5 games behind Isle of Wight. Page 3

Chairman s report continued As ever, the managers do a fantastic job and I would like to thank Joyce and Mick Nash and Richard King for undertaking these roles this year. Thanks also go to all of the playing committee and main committee that work behind the scenes in getting the squad to the Inter Regionals With the change of venue proving a huge success hopefully we can attract some more players to seek qualification through our Qualifiers. Overseas Play Clubs within the region continue to forge strong bonds with clubs and competitions abroad at a social and competitive level, amongst them The Meadow, Tovil and The Villager. At a regional level we continue to support The Dunkerquoise by sending a side to that competition and in 2012 we took a team (plus support) to Zeist in the Netherlands. This was a great experience and we will be looking to repeat it in 2013.We continue to look to develop other relationships and are looking at West Flanders and a large club in Bruges to provide us with other opportunities to play on the near continent. Thank You Thank you to the Lordswood Sports & Social Club for again hosting us and specifically to Mick Weston for all of his hard work in the background to make it run smoothly. As I say every year, this is a voluntary sport, everyone involved is doing it for fun and giving up their time to play or organise a sport that they love. Things may not always be perfect, or be to everyone s liking but the committee do try to the best of their abilities and with the right intentions. Without people volunteering we would not have a sport. Across the region I am sure that we have many people with skills and knowledge from their normal roles that may be of use to the region and our clubs. David and I will be working on compiling a list of people who are willing to provide help and support to the region and to our clubs. We are not looking for specific commitments, rather people who are willing to share a bit of their time and expertise to assist. Please I have the help of a lot of people and I would like to thank the following: The Management Committee for all of their hard work through out the year. As ever, my final thanks go to Annette for carrying out the Membership role, which she is stepping down from this year after many years in this often thankless but absolutely crucial role. With regard to Membership, we have another change from the EPA for the coming year, in that renewal will move to January with membership to run for the calendar year. I would ask that if anyone wishes to take on this role or know more then please speak to David or!.in addition to these she has also devoted many of her Sundays to organising the majority of the regional competitions again this year, allowing those who want to play to do so. Without her I would not be able to do what I do. Finally, the Taylor Award, awarded by the Chairman each year to those who have made significant contribution to the sport in the region. This year I would like to present the Taylor Award to Dave Hurren. Dave has been involved with the sport at the county and national level for over 30 years. He has played and coached at all levels of the game over that period. Dave is always willing to help and support new or young players to develop. He is always encouraging and willing to discuss tactics with his sole aim of helping others develop. To play either with Dave or against him is always a pleasure and fun, which for me is the reason why I play and love this sport. Thank you Dave for the help and encouragement you have given me over the years and I am sure everyone will join me in thanking and recognising you for everything you have done for the sport in the region. Thank you all for your ongoing support and may I wish you all the best for the next year. Martin Eggleton Chairman Kent Petanque Association 15 th November 2012 Not a piece of conceptional art..but a model of an idea by David Baxter. An inexpensive solution for weather protection over a petanque piste, as against a full size indoor bouladrome. The model was constructed by David and was presented at the recent KPA/KPL AGM s, where he invited suggestions and comments from members...there were some comments.some informed, some not so informed. Page 4

The gathering was Chaired by MARTIN EGGLETON for the KPA part and COLIN SENNECK for the KPL part. RE-The KPA part. The accounts were presented by KEN BUCHAN, the KPA Treasurer and show a healthy at the year end plus 1779 held in the Junior Fund. Fees received for KPA membership are down on last year, indicating a drop in overall membership, and some 227 was spent on Petanque car stickers which will be given to all members when rejoining the KPA next year. A total of 3501 was raised from entry fees for the four Regional Qualifiers and a similar sum was returned at 55 per head to players representing Kent at the National Regional Championships at Mill Rythe Holiday Village, to assist as expenses incurred in accommodation. The meeting voted to keep the KPA Membership fee at 6 for the coming year. The meeting agreed to enrol a Vice Chairman to the KPA Management Committee. Martin Eggleton will remain as Chairman, Ken Buchan Treasurer, and David Baxter as Secretary. Annette Eggleton stepped down as Membership Secretary, and as yet no other member has stepped forward to replace her. DAVE HURREN of the Meadow P.C. was awarded the Taylor Trophy for year Barry Wing made a short presentation regarding a proposed National Grand Slam series of competitions at various venues for next year. RE The KPL part. The accounts were presented by KEN BUCHAN the KPL Treasurer and show the account stands at 2627 at year end. After several years as Chairman, Colin Senneck is standing down to be replaced by Mike Cubitt of the Gravesend Rugby Club Petanque, Mick Nash will continue as the League Secretary, and Ken Buchan as Treasurer. There were several proposals presented to the meeting #1 By David Baxter...Playing Rules 2 Late Arrivals... to be amended to read that games should start at 8pm and points may be awarded after this time, and any triple not present by 8:30 may be penalised 4-0 (52-0) result to their opposition. This proposal was accepted by the meeting. #2 By Ron Yates...Constitution 3 Membership Item 4.to be amended to include a reference table to be added to the KPL web-site giving details of club name, team name, team captain and names of team members and playing division for that year. This proposal was accepted by the meeting. #3 By Ron Yates.Playing Rules 6 Substitutions Item 1.to be amended to read...teams in a higher division may draw players from their Clubs lower Divisions for two matches only. A third match with a specific team will result in that player remaining in that specific team and that teams division for the remaining matches of the season. Interpretation: an individual player can play an unlimited number of matches for an unlimited number of teams within the same Club provided that this Item 1 is adhered to. This proposal was accepted by the meeting. #4 By Mike Cubitt.Reference Playing Rule Item1 (playing an unlicenced player).also Ref. Playing Rule 2 Item 1 ( failure of a team to arrive).also Playing Rule 3 Item 3 (a rearranged match failing to take place. That it is Proposed that the default score (applicable to these Rules) will be changed to 4 games to nil, 52 points to 24. This proposal was not accepted by the meeting. This proposal generated an interesting discussion with most speakers generally in favour of the essence of Mikes proposal...continued Page 5

.with quoted examples of how sometimes it was difficult to rearrange games and in particular the possible detrimental affect to all other teams in a Division when matches were not played or an artificial score was used for matches not played. There would be possible problems with the current League software if artificial scores were used. No doubt this problem of re-arranging and non-playing of matches will come back to be discussed at future meetings, however as was pointed out by several speakers...the onus is on teams to arrange their players for the playing year in order that matches are played in accordance with the fixture list, and if there are any reasons not to, then the team of default shall try to re-arrange on good and reasonable sporting terms. The KPA Trophies and the KPL Trophies were presented by Martin Eggleton the Chairman of the Kent Petanque Association. 10 BABS MIKE SCOTT BRIDGET DAVE GEOFF BARRY The last day of Autumn or the first day of Winter. Sunday 28th October at the Hartley P.C. Open Doubles Competition. New and old hats on display, certainly not for looks or DEAN style.but just to keep the heat in, and the cold out. 26 teams travelled ANNE from far and wide to play in this competition, and surprisingly only a few from the Hartley Club played. The competition was organised by Colin Senneck and Mick Nash, and the bar-b-que was operated by Gordon Angell and Val Rossall. Gordon had also spent the best part of Saturday morning clearing the autumn leaves from the terrain. Hartley is one of the few clubs with some sort of part enclosed protection from the elements, including three portable gas fires that give out some limited welcome warmth. All the entry fees collected were returned as cash prizes. The Main Competition and JIM the cash prize of 70 was won by Richard Spillet and Rowland Jones (of Meadow P.C.) who beat Dave Randall and Steve Fort (of Croydon P.C.) 13 2 in the final. The Plate Competition and the cash prize of 50 was won by Fergal Hogan and Rob Rozsahegyi (of Harrow P.C.) who JEAN LOUIS beat Colin and Anne Senneck (Hartley P.C.) 13-9 in the final. The Consolage and 20 was won by Sebastion Sizun and Keith ( of Sydney Arms P.C.) who beat Peter MARGARET and Diane Bryant ( of Hartley P.C.) 13-6 in the final. Cold, but a good competition with an overall high standard of play, finished just after 5pm. Page 10

This is the time of year, and over the winter season, when most Petanque Clubs hold their Annual General Meetings. One of the topics on the agendas will be what do we do about the food we provide after league matches. Do we take one more step towards outdoing other clubs by providing Beef Wellington with an array of fresh, in-season vegetables, served on fine China, and eaten with sterling silver EPNS cutlery, and the linen napkin..or do we retrench and provide the manly cheese and onion sandwich mit pork pie.without plates? The food provided after the Wednesday night League match varies greatly from club-to-club, and the costs to each club, and players vary accordingly. How the petanque supper evolved is long lost in history. How many petanque players at home on a typical weekday evening tuck into a plateful of Chilli-Con-Carni at 10:45pm whilst watching Newsnight on the T.V.?...yet will think nothing of tucking into something similar after a petanque match. The main benefit of the petanque supper is to get to know the opposition at a social level, over a few mouthfuls of food, and the landlord is bound to receive some much need income from the gathering. Petanque players do however.. like-their-grub! Witness the time spent by Simon Mannering flipping burgers at the recent Kent Classic, to satisfy the ever hungry players. For those of us that engage in maximum eating but minimum cooking, the numerous cooking programmes on the TV act as an appetiser. The recent programme highlighting baking cakes was an education to the uninitiated.for us who will be tempted to cook a good fryup or chicken curry, baking cakes is a definite no-go area. It seems.if meat is cooked in various ways.a chicken dish remains a chicken dish, and a beef dish remains a beef dish. Cake making is a chemical miracle..a host of unlikely ingredients, and many technical secrets, produce, as if by magic, a miracle that looks good and tastes even better. The recent cake cooking programme (by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood) illustrated the making of Chelsea Buns...how a mixture of flour, a few eggs and a collection of sloppy things can produce wonderful buns, is nothing short of a miracle. Maybe buns and cakes for the petanque supper?
