KENT PETANQUE ASSOCIATION ISSUE No.33 MARCH 2009 The CROWN at SEAL home of SEAL PETANQUE CLUB one of the oldest clubs in Kent

The HIGHLAND DOUBLES COMPETITION SUNDAY 1st MARCH They travelled miles by foot, car, and pony, for a roast dinner just like mum makes, washed down with a couple of pints of Harvey s best bitter on draught, in the oldy world setting that is the CROWN at Seal. Some played Petanque before and after dinner. REPORT OF PLAY With hopefully, the worst of the winter behind them, SEAL PETANQUE CLUB played host to 18 Doubles teams on Sunday 1st March for a well contested and upbeat day of close competition. The HIGHLAND SHIELD, sponsored by local firm Highland Printers attracted a good turnout from clubs across the county including Hartley, Fighting Cocks Lordswood, Tovil and Villager. Three Seal teams made it through to the main competition but were unsuccessful in their bid for a home win. The eventful main competition final was a close battle between Beccies Boys (Trevor Glenn and Steve Brown) and Lego Head (Geoff Booth and Chris Watkins) with Beccies Boys emerging as winners. Prize money of 110 was shared between Winners and Runners-up. Finalists in the Plate were Hartley Conifers (Winners) and Brothers in Arms. The next Open Competition at Seal PC is the Garage Triples on Sunday 26th April. REPORT OF PLAY BY HOWARD SANDOM Page 2

TOVIL PC versus MARCHES PC Hereford Played 28th February at Hereford We arrived in the sunshine, a little before midday as scheduled, in Hereford, after a 4 hour drive. The MARCHES team were very nice people and provided us with a light lunch before the games began. They explained that they hold the Hereford Open there on 27th/28th June. They expanded the pistes last year and they now have 32. A lovely venue. Both TOVIL teams lost the toss, Scott, Steve and Steve Brown were taken onto the pistes we had all had a bit of practice on ( not like the TOVIL pistes) they started a bit iffy but all upped their game, played well and won their 1st triples comfortably after losing the first 4 points. Score Dean,,Paul and Fay were taken onto some horrible pistes and although Dean had an amazing game with Paul playing well I had trouble getting to grips with it. The luck didn t go our way either and we lost So into the doubles we went, one game all. TOVIL won the toss for all three doubles and took MARCHES onto the TOVIL like pistes. At one point we were down in all three games and it looked like our journey to Hereford was going to end our hopes of making the finals. Dean played the mixed with Lisa Gilbert and went 6-0 down (Lisa was poor I regretted dropping myself) however, with as bit of encouragement, Lisa began to improve and Dean was still playing really well. They eventually won Steve Brown and Mat Whatley were also down Mat playing the better of the two and keeping the score low. Then Brown started hitting boule and it all changed. They to ended up winning One more win to take us through but at this point with two doubles over, Scott and Steve were down. Steve and Scott were not playing to their usual standard and they were struggling against a MARCHES pair who were playing extremely wee. With Steve and Scott digging deep they eventually won It was an excellent game to watch. Game over TOVIL won overall 4 1 and are through to the semi-finals at Whittlesey. MARCHES were a very capable team and the result could have been very different. A few friendly games to finish with which were not recorded. Had a great laugh with them. Gave them our thanks and left at 5:30pm to make our way home. Had a great run through and was home at 8:45. REPORT BY FAY GOLDER TOVIL PC Page 3

The MEADOW PC took on the ENGINE PC from the Chiltern Region in the Quarter finals of the British heats of the European Cup. Having previously eliminated last years winners, COLNE ANGLES, in a previous round. MEADOW PC were quietly optimistic of reaching the finals this year. However they were playing for the first time on their newly laid pistes at the Star Meadow Sports ground against a very strong ENGINE team who had beaten them in the semifinals of this competition last year. Despite some tight games, that were not reflected in the score lines, ENGINE ran out winners by four games to one. 5 On a glorious Saturday afternoon 28th February, LORDSWOOD PETANQUE CLUB took a significant step forward in the European Cup fro Clubs Competition by beating a very good CRONDALL TEAM from Hampshire, in the Quarter finals. The LORDSWOOD TEAM consisting of Wendy and Simon Mannering, Chris Watkins, Kieran Maggs, Dave Chalkly and Matt Horrigan were in very good form and started superbly by winning the hard fought opening two triples games; both However, things nearly took a turn for the worse in the following doubles games. Chris and Kieran were convincingly beaten 13 0, oops! Dave and Matt were trailing 9 3 and Wendy and Simon were holding their own at 5 5. With LORDSWOOD needing only to win two more games to go through to the next round, Matt and Dave rallied to win 13 9 (again). It was all down to Simon and Wendy at this stage, but, not to worry, they too rallied and won the game 13 9 (again)..and the match was won. The semi-final takes place at Whittlesey on 22nd March and the team look forward to meeting the other semi-finalists. K.P.A. MANAGEMENT MEETING 12th MARCH Sorry to report that none of the Clubs in the Kent Region were represented at the meeting other than members of the Committee. Some important points were discussed including funding for players who will represent Kent at the National Regional Finals at Brean Sands, including the cost of the accommodation and the cost of a proposed new team kit. It was proposed that the K.P.A. investigate the purchase of a secure shed to be located at Lordswood, for storage of equipment owned by the KPA. It was proposed and accepted that RICHARD KING (GeorgePC) be co-opted onto the Management Committee. The playing calendar for 2009 was altered, yet again. The date of the 2nd Kent Triples Qualifier is not now on the 10th May, the change occurring just a couple of weeks before the first qualifier. Now come on boys!..this is now the middle of March..and after issuing several draft calendars it now looks like the end of March for the final issue. Next year.no more draft issues...just one final issue of a calendar at the end of February is not unreasonable. Make your opinions known on this subject! Early moves are afoot to organise a KPA Trophy Presentation evening. An open Sunday Competition, followed by a buffet, music, and Trophy Presentations, for both Junior and Senior players. This event has a preliminary planning date in September. See what you miss by not sending a representative from your Club to the meeting, don t miss the next meeting 23rd April at TOVIL P.C. and hear, and witness the maiden speech of big Richard King. Page 5

Once upon a time there was a bear who...we will let them tell their story. For all those players who know us and for those who have just started out, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and introduce ourselves to the new players in the Kent area. We are Marion Halsey and Phil Boarder, and we started PEN-Y-COED PETANQUE in 1993 in a small village near Folkestone in Kent. We cut our teeth playing in the Competitions in Kent and playing part time for the Black Lion B League Team. From the small start in 1993 looking at 17 sets of boule on the lounge carpet we sought larger premises and moved to Bardwell, near Bury St.Edmonds in Suffolk. Since 1995 we have run the only UK shop dedicated to Petanque. The family business evolved with the shop now being a centre of advice and service where we can give you the individual attention you require to choose your Petanque equipment. Pen-Y-Coed are the UK stockists of boule from the oldest boule manufacturer in the world, La Boule Integrale. We have the expertise to supply the top quality boule. In 2003 we were granted the trading rights for Obut in the UK, so we have both the worlds oldest and largest boule suppliers supporting us. We hold large stocks of boule with over 200 sets of constantly changing stock. As our range is so extensive with over 2500 variations, it would be impossible to keep them all, so sometimes we have to ask players to wait 2 3 weeks for the choice. Supplying boule is not the end of our business as we also promote the game of Petanque in the UK. An article in BBC Gardeners World bought massive response and we learned that readers of this particular magazine tend to phone after 10 o clock at night! Over the years we have sponsored the Great Britain Team at numerous World Championships and of course the BPA Junior Award scheme. We still get loads of requests for contacts of where to play. If new players turn up at your club, chances are that we have provided information to interested people in your area. Our web site offers all the latest equipment as well as a list of competitions around the country. We hope to provide equipment and information to all players whether they play at Pub, Club, Regional or National level. We look forward to seeing you playing petanque and have a chat either on or off the piste. MARION & PHIL Stock at home and on location Page 6

We at the DUKE OF WELLINGTON record how pleased we were to be invited to host this years FINALS. It gave us the opportunity to officially open our new piste and dazzle everyone with our new 400watt Metal Halide floodlights, they are something special. The new limestone dust topping looks good and gives an even bounce, and although the piste appears quite flat, there are many subtle undulations which caused a great deal of head scratching and bewildered looks. It is a good test and requires full attention. Thanks to all Petanquers and spectators who parked at the nearby village hall car park and just to remind all visiting teams to please do the same through the coming summer season. AND THE MATCH REPORT. The CUP FINAL was between the GEORGE P.C. and TOVIL TITANS. In the PLATE FINAL Hartley Countrymen took on Villager A. On a clear sharp night, which happened to be Comic Relief night, Tovil sported Comic Relief noses, the rest of us acquired red noses of our own as the evening progressed. The first round matches saw the George win both games 13-9 and 13-12, likewise for Hartley and One of the Cup games was a real ding dong affair with Tovil leading by 9-2 with some very good all-round play. The George trip then switched their team to shooter pointing pointer to middle middle to shooter and the all important first boule on the cosh put pressure on the Tovil team and slowly bur surely the George came back and eventually won a nail biting last end and the game The lesson learned, is don t be frightened to change things to give your team fresh impetus. All teams changed to a new Piste and in the Plate Hartley won the Plate by virtue of a 13-7 win but the Villager team, who had played very well all night, then salvaged some pride by winning the last game The highlight was watching Josh Littley pacing out the distance, he is a character and no mistake something the sport needs. In the Cup however, the George team who had just won the tight game then lost There were one or two grumbles of bare spots and dead spots in the far side piste, but of course it is the same for both teams. A more likely explanation, and we have all been there, bought the T shirt etc. Is that the George team gave so much in the first game it was difficult to raise their game a second time. Of course this meant that the other George team had to win the all important third game and Tovil were way ahead on points so if they could make it two all, then they would win on points. There was much cheering and high fiving between players and supporters, cosh s were shot out to save the end and the standard of play was excellent. Who said Petanque was a boring game, well it most certainly isn t when played to this level of intensity. Over the winter you here comments. don t bother to measure it s only the winter league.here we had players literally playing their hearts out, and spectators living every possible emotion right along with them. One good end would decide the entire match, and this time the George came through and were worthy champions. Commiserations to TOVIL TITANS, it was a blinder of a match. As a spectator, I find it fascinating to study the players and what looks like outward calm, probably conceals a high blood pressure inner self. Some laugh, have a banter with spectators, others have a deadpan expression and never show any emotion. Of course, we all know the best players can harness their emotions and take the opponents inevitable lucky ricochet s in their stride, and then calm themselves to play an extra special saving or winning shot just when it s needed. The all important thing is to enjoy this funny old game, be a good sport and generous in defeat, next time will be your day. 9 From an acorn provided by K.P. of Ryarsh, an oak tree starts to grow, PASSING ON INTELLIGENCE GAINED FROM PISTE REFURBISHMENT. Ryarsh P.C. based at the Duke of Wellington at Ryarsh have just completed enlarging their terrain from two pistes to 6 pistes, and they pass on information, together with info from other Clubs that others might find useful. THE RYARSH FLOODLIGHT Fabricated from sections of galvanised scaffold poles, and standard scaffold fittings. A short section 6/8ft long is fixed securely in the ground, and the main pole is secured to it by two scaffold clamps, the top one fixed and the bottom one a pivot. To lower the main pole for maintenance or replacing a bulb, undo the fixed clamp, loosen the pivot clamp and the main pole can be lowered. QED FLOODLIGHTING Petanque is normally based at pubs or sports and social clubs that in most cases have old electrical wiring systems and may not even conform to the latest stringent regulations, some may be single phase supply or multi phase supply, and the sighting of the floodlights will be some way from the main electric power board, producing a voltage drop and relatively expensive armoured cable from the power board to the floodlights. It is therefore wise to seek the advice of a qualified electrician for the design and layout of the floodlight system BEFORE YOU START. Ryarsh recommend the following supplier for electrical equipment. CITY ELECTRICAL STROOD ASK FOR GAVIN A generous discount may be available. Ryarsh have used 4 x 400watt Metal Halide Lights THIS ARTICLE WILL BE CONTINUED IN THE COMING MONTHS PLEASE CONTACT THE GAZETTE WITH YOUR TIPS Page 9

A follow up to a question of rules from an issue of the GAZETTE a couple of months ago. 10mtrs greater than 10mtrs CASE. First player of team A throws the coche to a distance of 10 metres then points a first boule that catches the coche and rolls it to a distance greater than 10 metres. WHAT DOES THE FIRST PLAYER OF TEAM B DO? J-L the Petanque sage and elder of the village of New Barn, writes there are no limits to the length of a playing surface unless in an official competition, the organisers decide to play with boundaries with strings etc.. In other words if, for instance, you take the Dartford football club petanque piste which is huge and without boundaries, if the coche travels 30 or 40 metres after being hit, you would still be expected to carry on playing as long as the coche lies within one metre of the end of the playing surface. G-G says.game over (unless the coche was marked ), both first players of both teams should have the chance of playing to the coche within the legal lengths of 6 to 10 metres. Rules-the-World says...fipjp RULES OF PLAY 14th NOV ARTICLE 5 states that the game can be played within marked boundaries or un-marked open areas with agreed boundaries. ARTICLE 7 States that the jack must be a minimum of 1metre from an obstacle and from the nearest boundary of an out-of-bounds area. ARTICLE 9 states that the jack is dead when displaced to more than 20 metres from the throwing circle. And the WORLD SAYS if the coche is less than 20 metres from the throwing circle and more than 1 metre from an obstacle or boundary...carry on playing as normal. FINAL WORDS OF THE SEASON FROM THE LEAGUE MANAGE- MENT. The winners of DIVISION B were Tovil Titans with a massive 46 wins out of 56 games played. Runners up were Hartley Centurions who just pipped Lordswood Moldavians, although the outcome was in doubt until the very last game of the season. In DIVISION A the league little was contested right to the end between Hartley Countrymen and the George. Hartley got the better of the George in the penultimate game of the season and this proved to be the crucial score. At the end of the season the difference between the first and second was a mere 2 games. Well done to everyone who took part in this friendly yet competitive league.
