KENT PETANQUE ASSOCIATION ISSUE No.68 FEBRUARY rd February held at Vigo Village Hall, attended by a multitude of Committee members and KPA player members. Namely...M.Eggleton, A.Eggleton, R.Spillet, T.Spillet, C.Cooter, R.King, K.Pinder, M.Nash, K.Buchan, D.Baxter, P.Abbett, D.Littley, R.Yates, M.Weston, E.Hatfield, J.Rixon and P.Bradley. A few notes regarding the meeting, that may be of interest.not minutes. The larger than normal attendance proved a success in producing a wider range of views on some important subjects, and promoted some healthy discussions. M.Eggleton advised that he was progressing with templates to be used for a KPA shooting competition to be held on 18th May, Tovil PC also have a set of existing templates. A discussion was held as to when the final of the shooting competition would be held.agreed that the final would follow on from the competition on 18th May. M.Weston and E.Hatfield were pleased to announce that a KPA purchased steel storage container was now in situ at Lordswood. It had taken over three years to find a suitable container at the right size and price, and after many wasted hours the container will at last be ready for use next week after installing a plywood liner and some shelving. The container is of size 12ft x 8ft and cost 1350 and represents a long term capital investment by the KPA. Historically, kit, clothing, banners, and equipment owned by the KPA has been stored by Committee members in their garages, lofts and dining rooms, so it is with great convenience to all that a purpose built permanent storage facility is now available. A long and detailed discussion was held regarding Juniors and, in particular, juniors at the Duke of Wellington PC -Ryarsh. For some time now the D.O.W. have been successful in attracting juniors centred around members of a local kids football team. The KPA have provided junior boule to the juniors, on loan, and there are plans for the KPA to purchase more junior boule for loan, available to any junior members of the KPA who wish to take up the offer. It was however agreed that the Committee should clarify the conditions of the loan of boule, including the loan period. It would appear that the Committee need to inform all clubs that not only are junior boule available for loan by KPA Junior members, but there are funds available (Junior Fund) to contribute to some of the costs incurred by Juniors playing in some representative competitions. continued KPA GAZETTE Page 1

The D.O.W. P.C. will be running an Adult + Junior Competition on Saturday 12th May in the afternoon followed by food after the final, early evening. This will be a KPA sponsored competition and will be open to KPA players from other clubs in Kent. A total of 12 teams will form the entry. The KPA will be offering some funds to the D.O.W. to cover the juniors, and maybe some trophies. ISOBEL PINDER has produced a draft flier, which will be followed by a flier giving the final details of the event on 12th May.keep a lookout, looks like pre-entry will be the best bet to guarantee a place. Kent have a new, freshly qualified umpire, Mr. RICHARD KING. Well done Richard say us all.kent is the largest petanque Region in the UK and it has been a long time coming.to have our own umpire. To the Whitehouse P.C. at East Farleigh on Thursday 19th April at 8pm.an open meeting to discuss ways and methods and guidance for organising competitions and events at Club level for the benefit of members, and also guidance on how to run an open Sunday competition. One or two members per Club are welcome to attend, a buffet will be available, provided by the Pub and funds from the KPA. This meeting will be followed by an open morning on 29th April to put into practice and demonstrate findings from the meeting. As yet, there are no details available of, or about the Regional Triples Finals to be held at Mill Rythe Holiday Park, Hayling Island in September. The Coaching event to be held on the morning of Sunday 11th March at Lordswood P.C. is for both juniors and seniors. Another big discussion point.kpa/epa membership renewal for year Members throughout the UK with current valid addresses have been contacted by (from the EPA) giving details of how to renew licences on-line. EPA members without an address will be contacted by letter and 2nd class post. For the few that have already renewed and paid their 19 on-line there was general agreement that the process is simple and speedy. However, it is not yet clear as to how members will receive their licences from the EPA, and the length of time it will take. It is the responsibility of individual members to attach a photograph to the licence, and to seek out Annette Eggleton to formally stamp/emboss the licence and photograph. It is also the responsibility of individual members to obtain the signature of their club chairman on the licence. Not clear as yet as to the exact route of applications made by letter/post, but will probably mean some involvement by Club Secretaries and probably Annette Eggleton. The suggestion so far is that it will take a couple of weeks for members to receive their licence using the on -line method and maybe 6 to 8 weeks to receive their licence using the post/letter method. Entrants for the first (and all other) Regional Triples Qualifiers will require a valid licence. Payments and licence renewal forms will not be accepted on the day of the first Qualifier on 15th April.ensure that you apply for a licence ASAP. KPA finances stand at and Junior Fund at 1768 ( incl. cost of storage container) UMPIRES COURSE There will be a rescheduled EPA UMPIRES COURSE on 10th/11th March at the Holiday Inn Reading South. For further details and application form contact DAVID BAXTER Tel , or JOHN THATCHER Tel The closing date for applications will be Sunday 4th March. KPA GAZETTE Page 2

All gates will be closing on 31st March for checking in Club Registrations to the E.P.A. The Kent Regional Triples Qualifiers take off on 15th April and in accordance with KPA and EPA Rules all participating passengers are required to posses, and present, a current Licence, including a duly stamped passport photograph. This time span between 31st March and 15th April will allow ground staff two weeks to receive relevant passenger information and return a new Licence...someone is going to be very busy!... Will some passengers be unhappy at not receiving their Licence in time? The above arrangement is not covered by ABTA...and therefore we suggest that Club Secretaries send their Club Registration Forms to the EPA, well before the 31st March, along with the required 35. Club Registration forms and relevant information can be found on the E.P.A web-site. RICHARD KING is the KPA Youth Development Officer and he will be arranging a get-together of juniors on 11th March for assessment and encouragement of juniors for entry into this years Regional Triples Qualifier Competitions, and other KPA Competitions.keep your eyes peeled for further info. And...KEN PINDER ( Duke of Wellington P.C. Ryarsh) provides the latest update We are laying the groundwork for an all inclusive day of fun and petanque on 12th May at the Duke of Wellington Ryarsh, for KPA Juniors. The exact details are to be finalised soon, and we shall be sending flyers to all Clubs. Again..be on the lookout for final details of this event...hopefully to be published in the Gazette. Finally KEN advises that the DOW have laid a new top surface to their pistes..a fine coat of concrete sand about 2-3mm thick and early days are suggesting that the pistes play like typical French pistes where the boule glides its way to the target and leaves a snail type track in the surface. A recent report on the EPA web-site advises of the sad death of MARTIN BAKER. Martin was a long time petanque player of a good playing standard, a member of Harow Petanque Club, and a well liked sportsman to many Kent players who knew him. KPA GAZETTE Page 3

and DAVID BAXTER advises. I am sure that most of you know about the KPA events calendar on our web page. It is also available as a Google Calendar and so can be seen in your Google Calendar or any PC calendar application that supports the ICAL or CalDav standards. The advantage of this is that the information is right there with all your other calendar information and that any changes or additions to the calendar are immediately visible to you. To link to the calendar you will need on of the following. Within Google Calendar the ID of the KPA Calendar is db@volvox.biz. From an ICAL compliant Calendar you will need to paste the following address.. For a CalDAV compliant Calendar you will need to paste the following address. Seems pretty straight forward then! MANY THANKS DAVID For those that need to know. ICAL should read ical which is short for icalendar..apple Speak...iCal is a computer File Format which allows internet users to send meeting requests and tasks to other users, via or sharing files with an extension of ics. That makes it a lot clearer! CalDAV.is an acronym for Calendar Distributed Authorising & Versioning Of course it is.! This time of year when most Clubs have had their Annual General Meetings, or are about to, Club finances come under the spotlight. The Club treasurer announces that he will carry over 4;32 from this year to next years account and Club subscriptions will remain at 64p per member...a slight exaggeration! But in essence not too far from the truth. Playing Petanque is a Cheap sport, even at the top level. Most if not all playing venues are financially supported to varying degrees by a sports club, social club, brewery or publican, or the local council. don t know of any Petanque Club that pays any form of council rates, and generally utility bills are absorbed by others. However, unlike most other sports, a small minority of club members do give up their time to maintain and improve playing facilities. Some petanque players, that have not played other sports, seem to be unaware that subscriptions to County or National organising Sports bodies is the norm, and that coverage of a sport in the media and general exposure and success is due very much to the efforts of the National organising bodies, not to mention entry of specialised sports participating in the Olympics and other International competitions. Strange as it may appear, in this day and age of dodgy bankers and sharp accountants the Petanque Club mentioned above, with a year end surplus of 4:32 is in a better financial position than most professional football clubs! Subscriptions to the EPA are difficult to quantify.but without an active National Governing Body,..Petanque is going nowhere! KPA GAZETTE Page 4

The continuing saga of our man SAGA...NEVER KNOWINGLY TOO OLD. He said that he was going for a short stay in Australia to catch up with some sun and do a bit of swimming! He didn't see a lot of sun.and a bit of swimming was a slight understatement. MICK JENNINGS, Kent Petanquer, Channel Swimmer, multi tasking sportsman and all round good egg took part in the Australia Day Sydney Harbour Great Swim Race on January 26th of this year. Mick you may remember spent most of last year promoting and selling his book BELIEVE IT OR NOT from which he raised which he passed on to the ELLENOR HOSPICE, as a generous donation. Even so, Mick managed his time to fit in a long distance swim under the San Francisco Bridge during last summer. The Australia Day swim was an inaugural swim of 3km part encouraged and organised by Australian Olympian Iron Man Ky Hurst. The race fitted in with a day of swimming races and celebrations in the Sydney Harbour local to the Bridge and the Opera House. Races of several distances and for all age groups from youngsters to seniors. The 3km race that Mick entered was for all age groups, and Mick came first of the over 70 s swimmers and finished in at 191 of all the male swimmers, with an overall entry of 750 swimmers. Mick started the swim from the steps of Sydney Opera House with a day time temperature of 30 degrees, no need for a wet suit so he thought. There were no signs of sharks in the water but there were numerous Aussie swimming Mick, after the race on the steps of Sydney Opera House being interviewed by Fox Channel Seven News. biting critters producing a body full of stings, and things. continued Mick talks to Australian Olympian Ironman Ky Hurst, who hopes to represent Australia in London later this year, at the Olympics KPA GAZETTE Page 5

On the left Mick nearing the finishing line on the right one of the 7 Bull sharks that were traced swimming in Sydney Harbour on Australia Day. Apparently the Authorities tag sharks ( if they first catch them ) to determine their behaviour, and were well aware of the location of the sharks according to the local press the following day.no swimmers were attacked. Prior to Mick leaving for Australia he was extremely pleased and proud to have been notified that he has been selected to carry the Olympic Torch at this summers Olympic Games. He was nominated by the ELLENOR HOS- PICE as being the individual who last year donated the largest amount of funds to the Hospice. He will be running with the torch on Friday 20th July on the leg between Maidstone and Guildford.not the total distance, he will be informed at a later date as to which part he will run. Well done MICK. A copy of an Australian press release..a couple of days before the big swim year-old amateur swimmer Michael Jennings is making the long-haul journey to take part in the Body Science Great Australian Swim Series, a series of swim races in the Harbour from early morning on 26 January. Michael, who says he was "born in the bath", first swam the English Channel in 1960 and regularly competes in amateur competitions around the world. He has also been chosen by the London Olympics to be one of 8,000 Torch-Bearers on the Olympic torch's trip around Great Britain before the Games commence in July and is looking forward to hitting the Sydney Harbour waters alongside professional Olympians Ky Hurst and Melissa Gorman and his fellow amateur competitors next Thursday. A pedantic observation.. RULES are measuring devices, of numerous types that can be found in great numbers in B & Q. RULERS generally wear crowns and sit on thrones and would not be seen dead in B & Q. Petanque players use RULES for measurement during games, or sometimes the retracting type of RULE called a TAPE. Very old players use the Imperial measurement of feet and inches.school teachers and frock makers use the Metric measurement of Centimetres...and engineers and the rest of the world uses the Metric measurement of Metres and Millimetres. RULE s favoured by petanque umpires have an adjustable end piece, making the instrument a COMPARATOR, and is a more accurate way of comparing distances between the cochonet and two separate boule. Measurements made by a stretched bar towel, or shoe sizes are simply, very silly! KPA GAZETTE Page 6

Mill Rythe Holiday Park Hayling Island. Also.the December issue of the CHILTERN REGION Newsletter shows several photos of what appears to be a very successful end of season Prize Giving and Dinner and Dance, very stylish and an overall appearance of enjoyment. K.P.A. members may recall that in recent years on two occasions, an attempt was made to hold something similar in Kent, but more low key, Prize Giving Buffet and Dance with a disco. For the very, very few that attended these functions, there was enjoyment, however the 5 cost for the buffet and disco was thought to be a bit steep. Understand that ALAN CREGEEN is on the lookout for players to join the EASTRY BOTTLES playing Tuesday nights in the EKCPL and also to join the NORTHWOOD CLUB playing Wednesday nights in the KPA Summer Leagues.contact Alan KPA GAZETTE Page 7
