1 A Community Club for 50 years Oakmeadians RFC In The Heart Of Bournemouth OAKMEADIANS RFC LTD ACORNS PARENT HANDBOOK 2013/14 A Community Club for 50 years Oakmeadians Rugby Football club is situated at Meyrick Park in the heart of Bournemouth and prides itself on being a family-friendly Rugby club. We have a modern club-house with an extensive balcony overlooking two excellent pitches and a large floodlit training area, all in a woodland setting. As well as a refurbished kitchen area in our main clubhouse there are also 4 changing rooms with individual showers and a physio room. Our Club comprises of 3 competitive senior men s teams, playing in Dorset & W ilts Leagues. A ladies team competing in South West Championship and our Touch section are the first 02 Touch Base in Dorset & W ilts. These teams are complemented by a thriving junior section appropriately named the Acorns with over 300 children between the ages of 5 & 18 playing regularly each week. In 2012/13 we developed a new section called the little bears for children aged 3 to 5. Last season we were the first club in Dorset & W ilts to be awarded whole club accreditation. We have also gained Natwest rugby force funding and Family friendly accreditation.

2 This season we will look forward to all three men s teams playing some good competitive rugby, our Ladies team and Little Bears are looking to expand in numbers, our touch team and Acorns will continue to grow. Ever thought about partnership? The club is actively looking for sponsorship for individual players and also main club partners too. Player sponsorship is a great way to help players pay their membership while local businesses get the chance to advertise and be part of our growing family-friendly rugby club. We have a range of packages available for all budgets For more info please contact marketing@oakmeadians-rfc.com If you have any questions about any items in the pack please don t hesitate to contact me. I will be in the clubhouse on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Saturday afternoons and some Sundays. None of this would be possible without your continued support through membership - Jane Hart

And there is no such thing as too small or too stupid an offer of help! Holding tackle bags once a month, making coffee for coaches on cold wet dark evenings, writing up membership cards, serving teas on match days & wiping down tables after food are just some of the jobs that are crying out to be done..either regularly or on a rota basis. What about one off practical jobs? The club house that we use & abuse requires a bit of TLC every now & then.would you be prepared to help out on working parties as & when needed? Let us know & we will pass your details on. Please speak to your team manager/coach or a member of the committee.

6 Please be aware... If you are planning to volunteer to help in an age group you must be a member of Oakmeadians RFC. All volunteers must be affiliated with a club for insurance and legal purposes. CRB s and coach qualifications are not valid if you are not affiliated with a club. If a second family member would like to be involved with the club we have a social membership which will then allow them to volunteer.

10 COACHES CODE OF GOOD CONDUCT. This code of conduct is as set out by the Dorset and Wilts RFU. In rugby union, coaches and young players should: Recognise the importance of fun and enjoyment when coaching young players. Understand that most learning is achieved through doing. Appreciate the needs of the player before the needs of the sport. Be a positive role model think what that implies. Keep winning and losing in perspective, encourage young players to behave with dignity in all circumstances. Respect all referees and the decision they make (remember it could be you refereeing next week) and ensure that the players recognise that they must do the same. Provide positive verbal feedback in a constructive and encouraging manner, to all young players, both during coaching sessions and games In rugby union, coaches and young players must: Provide experiences, which are matched to the young player s ages and abilities, as well as their physical and mental development. Ensure all youngsters are coached in a safe environment with adequate 1st aid readily to hand. Avoid the overplaying of the best players, by using a squad system, which gives everybody a satisfactory amount of playing time. Never allow a player to train or play when injured. Ensure good supervision of young players, both on and off the field. Recognise that young players should never be exposed to extremes of heat, cold, or unacceptable risk of injury. Develop an awareness of nutrition as part of an overall education in lifestyle management. Recognise that it is illegal for young players under 18 to drink alcohol. Ensure that their knowledge and coaching strategies are up to date and in line with rfu philosophy. Be aware of, and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the ruff policies and procedures for the welfare of young people in rugby union.

11 PARENTS CODE OF GOOD CONDUCT. This code of conduct is as set out by the Dorset and Wilts RFU Parents are encouraged to: Be familiar with the coaching and training programme in order that you can ensure that your child is fully involved and the coaches are aware of their availability. Be familiar with the teaching and coaching methods used by observing the sessions which your child participates. Be aware that the club has a duty to care and therefore, where appropriate, assist coaches with the supervision of the young players, particularly where numbers are large and there is a need to transport youngsters to away games. Be involved with club activities and share expertise. Share concerns, if you have them, with club officials. Be familiar with the good coaches code, in particular, It is important that parents support coaches in instilling these virtues. Parents should: Remember that young people play rugby for their enjoyment not that of the parents. Encourage young people to play do not force them. Focus on the young player s efforts rather than winning or losing. Be realistic about the young players abilities do not push them towards a level that they are not capable of achieving. Provide positive verbal feedback both in training and during the game. Remember that persistent negative messages will adversely affect the players and referees performance and attitude. Always support the rugby club in their efforts to eradicate loud coarse and abusive behaviour from the game. Remember young people learn much by example. Always show appreciation of good play by all young players both from your own club and the opposition. Respect decisions made by the match officials and encourage the young players to do likewise.

12 PLAYERS GOOD CODE OF CONDUCT. This code of conduct is as set out by the Dorset and Wilts RFU. Players are encouraged to: Recognise and appreciate the efforts made by coaches, parents, match officials and administrators in providing the opportunity for you to play the game and enjoy the rugby environment. Understand the values of loyalty and commitment to adults and team mates. Recognise that every young player has a right to expect their involvement in rugby to be safe and free from all types of abuse. Understand that if an individual or group of young players feel they are not being treated in a manner that is acceptable, then they have the right to tell an adult either at the rugby club or outside of the game. Players should: Play because they want to and not to please coaches or parents. Remember that skill development, fun and enjoyment are the most important part of the game. Be attentive at all training and coaching sessions. Work equally hard for yourself and your team both will benefit. Recognise good play by all players on your team and by your opponents. Be a sportsman, win or lose. Play to the laws of the game and accept, without question, all referees decisions. Control your emotions verbal or physical abuse of team mates, opponents or match officials is not acceptable. Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with bully or take advantage of any player.

When representing Oakmeadians in a match you are expected to wear the correct Club shirt, shorts and socks. At matches please arrive on time with all of your kit in a clean condition. On the field of play never question the referee s decisions, no matter how much your patience may be strained. Also remember; never question the decisions of referees in public. After a match, whatever the result, you are expected to shake hands with the opposition and match officials. Players must join in after matches in the clubhouse and should stay until your opponents have left. YOUTH SECTION PLAYERS MUST TAKE A TURN IN HELPING WITH THE RUNNING OF THE CLUB, I.E.
