Celtic tribes resisted both the Romans and Moors. Today Asturias is most known as a hikers paradise, especially in the spectacular Picos de Europa mountain range. Asturias continues to remain fiercely independent (one of the reasons its Celtic heritage is so pure), and even local food is nothing like traditional Spanish cuisine. Cider is a specialty, along with a powerful blue cheese called Cabrales. Perhaps the most well known food offering is fabada, a bean stew with meat and sausage. Asturian ciders will be served at the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival in July. BRITTANY (France) Breton wrestling is called Gouren. Its origins date to about the 5th Century, and it was reputedly practiced in King Arthur s Court. Gouren was used in the Middle Ages as a training technique for soldiers. The extraordinary strength and force required in the sport was often associated with magic fountains, occult powers, and the intervention of saints. In 1928, the first Interceltic Gathering, held in Quimper, pitted wrestlers from Brittany and Cornwall against each other. In Gouren, wrestlers wear a strong canvas tunic, which opponents grasp to make their throws. The object is to throw the opponent to the ground, so that both shoulders touch the ground simultaneously, before any other part of his body. Wrestling on the ground is not allowed, and whenever wrestlers fall, or go off the wrestling area, they must come back to the center of the area, shake hands, and begin again. CORNWALL (England) Cornwall continues its long history of scientific leadership with The Eden Project. Clusters of huge greenhouses comprise the main activities of the project, located near St. Austell, a major clay-mining town. An abandoned 150 foot deep, china clay pit has become home to thousands of plants, growing in three biomes, or climate zones. These manmade environments represent humid tropics (rainforests and oceanic islands), warm temperate regions (Mediterranean, South Africa and California), and a roofless biome the natural climate of Cornwall. Plants from a variety of Celtic regions will be on display at the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival in July. Over a century ago, Guglielmo Marconi established the Lizard Wireless Station in western Cornwall. From this site, in January 1901, he achieved the first wireless transmission over the horizon, to the Isle of Wight, a distance of about 150 miles. GALICIA (Spain) On November 19, 2002, the oil tanker Prestige broke apart and sank off the Galician coast, sending tens of thousands of pounds of crude oil to the prime fishing waters and sea coast. The cost to European taxpayers for the clean up has exceeded $1.25 billion dollars, and may go as high as $2.9 billion. The three Spanish regions most negatively affected by the spill are Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria, where the fishing industry is decimated, and tourism to these areas has declined by more than ten percent. IRELAND Arthur Guinness signed a lease for a run-down brewery in the St. James Gate area of Dublin on New Year s Eve, Full-scale production of his signature extra-stout porter began in By 1830, Guinness was the largest brewery in Ireland, and by 1883, it was the largest in the world. In the 1950s, the Guinness Brewing Company published the first Guinness Book of World Records, to settle bar bets! About ten million glasses of Guinness-Extra Stout and Guinness Draught are consumed each day around the world. ISLE OF MAN The IOM maintains a network of lighthouses around its perimeter for navigational safety. Today s lighthouses are fully automated, but, obviously, this was not always the case. The 1847 Bye-laws (sic) and Rules and Regulations of the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses describes specific instructions for lighthouse keepers. Several examples are: III. Before any individual can be received into the service as a Light-keeper, he must be duly qualified by six weeks attendance at the Bell Rock Lighthouse, and one month s attendance at Inchkeith Lighthouse, for instruction. XVI. Light-keepers shall observe the following Instructions: The Lamps shall be kept burning bright and clear every night from sunset to sunrise. In order that the greatest degree of light may be maintained throughout the night, the wicks must be trimmed every four hours, or oftener if necessary. The Keeper who has the first watch shall take care to turn the oil valves, to let the oil flow into the burner a sufficient time before lighting. SCOTLAND A rendering of John Muir (born April 21, 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland) appears prominently as one of the three major design elements on the U. S. Mint s California State Quarter. The California Historical Society named Muir the Greatest Californian in History in 1976 for his work as a naturalist, author, inventor, and scientist. Among his most enduring accomplishments are: forerunner of the modern environmental movement, father of Yosemite National Park, and co-founder and first president of the Sierra Club. WALES The British Broadcasting Company commissioned Wales most famous writer, Dylan Thomas, to write Under Milk Wood. The BBC paid Thomas in 1000-word segments, delivered to them between Thomas bouts with the bottle. The Welsh Development Agency is launching an effort to promote the world s awareness of the high quality lamb and beef, cheeses, dairy, and free range and organic eggs produced in Wales. ADDITIONALLY Two Celtic languages are mentioned in a recent Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. Breton (Brezhoneg) had about a million speakers in the 1850s, but now only about 240,000. For more information about the Breton language, visit: Cornish is making a comeback, although fewer than 1000 people currently speak it. An increasing number of signs and directional markers are appearing in the Cornish language. For more information about the Cornish language, visit:
