3 WELCOME MESSAGE Ahlan, and a warm welcome to the 2018 Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens! It is hard to believe that another year has passed and this amazing tournament is upon us once more. It s great to see so many of our loyal fans back again for what promises to be another spectacular weekend. For first timers sit tight, you re in for a treat! Let s take a moment to acknowledge those who make this event possible. The UAE Rugby Federation provides unwavering support to enable Emirates to host the World Rugby Series and Invitation Tournaments under the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens banner. The local rugby community rally and assist with volunteers who provide invaluable time and energy to deliver the event seamlessly. Our sponsors are enormously important and without them an event of this magnitude would not be possible. Finally, the city that many of us call home, Dubai, is a welcome place to be and provides an enchanting environment for visitors and sports fans alike. On behalf of Emirates I would like to thank you, for being here with us and sharing this occasion. So what s new? We have a host of exciting new attractions this year with a focus on family-friendly activities to keep the youngsters occupied. Check out the water park area and the kids zone for some thrilling new activities. The entertainment this year will be Britney Spears who will be joining us from Las Vegas for a weekend residency on Pitch 1. Be prepared for a performance to remember! 2018 marks the 49th Invitation Tournament which has seen huge growth in recent years. This year there are 260 rugby and 52 netball teams participating, an all-time tournament record for both sports. The World Rugby Series tournaments will host 16 men and 12 women s teams as usual. This year sees Zimbabwe as the guest team in the men s tournament and Kenya for the women s. Emirates flagship facility The Sevens Stadium provides a wonderfully vibrant backdrop for what is the 11th tournament hosted at this venue. Emirates is a keen sponsor of sport, especially rugby, and has sponsored this tournament since I wholeheartedly hope you enjoy the weekend be it on or off the pitch/court! Please, enjoy the entertainment, the sport, the fun and have a great weekend. Looking forward, 2019 will be the 50th anniversary for the Invitation Tournament, this momentous occasion will celebrate the progression from what was once a small club tournament hosted by Dubai Exiles RFC at their home ground in Al Awir on sand pitches to what is now one of the largest tournaments globally. One that teams flock to participate in and of which we are very proud. It will be the biggest, the best, the most exciting and entertaining weekend imaginable and I invite you all to come celebrate with us, it s going to be a blast. 4 TOURNAMENT INFORMATION Welcome to the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens Invitation Tournament This booklet s aim is to provide teams with essential tournament information to help make the experience as enjoyable, memorable and stress-free as possible. ENTRANCE/ACCREDITATION PASSES Accreditation Passes for players and personnel will only be issued when the signed Squad Registration Sheet is submitted at the Registration Tent. This will be possible from 12 noon on Wednesday 28th November onwards. Players must wear their Accreditation Pass at all times, except whilst playing when the pass should be lodged with their Team Manager. The Accreditation Pass allows a player or member of team personnel access to the areas they need to enter in order to take part in the Invitation Tournament. Without an Invitation Tournament Accreditation Pass, access will be denied. Lost passes must be replaced immediately. ACCREDITATION PROCESS Team Managers should have submitted all player accreditation information online by midnight (UAE time) on Saturday 24th November. Teams needing to change players from Monday 26th November and before their first match of the tournament must do so on site in person at the Registration Tent. Proof of eligibility will need to be provided for any new player and all player changes must be made by the Team Manager. Teams changing players will be issued a revised Squad Registration Sheet when the player changes take place. Accreditation Passes will not be issued to teams before 12 noon on Wednesday 28th November REGISTRATION Registration Tent opening times are: Monday 26th November Wednesday 28th November 12 noon 6.00pm Thursday 29th November 7.00am 9.30pm Friday 30th November 7.30am 10.00pm Saturday 1st December 8.00am 6.00pm Prior to play Team Managers must register their squad as detailed below:- SQUAD REGISTRATION Squad Registration Sheets can be printed by Team Managers from the Online Accreditation System prior to the tournament once online accreditation is complete. 5 Team Managers are required to register their squad by submitting the signed Squad Registration Sheet at the Registration Tent at least one hour prior to their first match of the tournament. Player shirt numbers must be noted on the Squad Registration Sheet against the appropriate player s name. Teams are encouraged to register their squad on Wednesday 28th November if ready to do so. Team Managers are only required to register the squad once for the tournament, before the Team s first match of the tournament. Once the first match has been played the team will remain as is with no further changes being made to the squad for the rest of the tournament. Please see Section of the Tournament Rules. All squad members (players and personnel) must personally sign the Squad Registration Sheet. Players arriving late to the tournament cannot play until they have signed the Squad Registration Sheet. Therefore late arrivals must present themselves at the Registration Tent to sign the Squad Registration Sheet and pick up their Accreditation Pass before they are allowed to play. The names listed on the Squad Registration Sheet will remain unchanged once the Team has played its first match. If for any reason a team is unable to play a scheduled match, it must be reported to the Registration Manager in the Registration Tent before the match is due to start. Medical/Injury A player becoming injured & certified by the medical personnel as medically unfit to play will not be able to be replaced. Please see Section of the Tournament Rules. TEAM IDENTIFICATION Teams must turn up at the pitch/court they are due to play on 20 minutes before their match is scheduled to start and register their presence with the Pitch/Court Marshall at the Pitch/Court Marshall stand. Players will have their identification checked against the image submitted for their online accreditation. Squad members are not permitted to play until they have signed the Squad Registration Sheet and received their Accreditation Pass. POOL PLAYERS Individuals - Individuals wishing to join a team may put their name on the list of Pool Players. The Pool Players list is held at the Registration Tent and players must register by on Thursday 29th November. Teams - Teams that are short of players before their first match may take additional players from the Pool, until their squad sheet is full. JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai Sheikh Zayed Road, Business Bay, PO Box , Dubai, UAE T jwmarriottmarquisdubailife.com PITCH/COURT MARSHALL STANDS Pitch/Court Marshall stands are located at: Pitch 1 at the side of the Grandstand tunnel and at the side of: Pitch 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 or at the netball table. MATCHES It is imperative that all teams arrive on time for their matches as the tournament runs to a very tight schedule. For rugby - all pitches will have technical zones marked for non-playing staff and replacements. All non-playing team members must remain within these zones while play is in progress. Pitch Marshalls will monitor this. For netball each court will have a team bench for each team which must be used by teams and their support personnel whilst play is in progress. Court Marshalls will monitor this. Should a team delay the start of a match through non-appearance or lateness the referee/umpire reserves the right to shorten the match time or award the points to the opposition. WARM-UPS For rugby - Teams may access the pitch on which their match is due to take place up to 30 minutes before the start of their match for warming up in the dead-ball area. For netball Teams may warm-up outside the courts in the designated area or on Court 4. SCHEDULE A current copy of the schedule is available at the Registration Tent or by visiting and checking the Invitation Tournament section. 7 Making Life More Exotic SATURDAY 1ST DECEMBER Pitch 1 - Trophy Finals for Gulf Under 19 Boys, International Under 19 Boys, International Invitation Men, International Vets, UAE National Schoolboys and Gulf Men s League. Pitch 2 & 7 - All other Trophy, Plate, Bowl & Shield Finals (check schedule for details) Netball Courts Gulf Women, Open Women & Open Youth Trophy, Plate & Bowl Finals Teams playing Finals that take place on Pitch 1 must meet at the main entrance of the Grandstand (Pitch 2 side) 30 minutes prior to the start of their match to be escorted through the Grandstand tunnel onto Pitch 1 for the start of the match. Please note: Accredited Personnel only will be allowed access. PRESENTATIONS Finals taking place on Pitch 1 will have their Trophy presentation above the tunnel of the Main Grandstand facing Pitch 1 immediately after the match has finished. Finals taking place on Pitch 2 will have their presentation immediately after the match at the presentation stand on Pitch 2. Finals taking place on Pitch 7 will have their presentation immediately after the match at the presentation stand on Pitch 2. A member of tournament staff will escort the winning team to the presentation stand on Pitch 2. Finals taking place on the Netball Courts will have their presentation immediately after the match at the presentation stand on the Netball Courts. Trophy, Plate, Bowl and Shield winners only, will receive trophies except in the International Invitation Men/Women and International Under 19 Boys sections where Cup finalists win Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. CHANGING ROOMS & TOILETS Changing Rooms are located on the ground floor of the Players Club. Toilets are located on the ground floor inside the Players Club (for team members only), outside the Players Club near the swimming pool, behind the dnata (East) and DHL (West) Stands and near Pitch 2 & 3 in the Rugby Village. Ice baths are available upon request in the Players Club changing rooms. 8 BAG DROP Players should not leave belongings unattended in the Changing Rooms or take kit bags into the stands or onto the pitch/court. A secure Bag Drop is situated in the Bag Drop Tent beside Pitch 6 near the Registration Tent. The Bag Drop will be open from 7.00am-10.00pm daily. Bags left in the Bag Drop Tent after hours will be secure and may be collected the following day. MEDICAL PROVISION There are 3 services available for players as follows: 1) Players Medical Services A Players Medical Room for players injured during play only, is located at the east end of the Airbus (South) Grandstand. Entry to this room is by referral from Tournament medical staff only. A full medical team will be in attendance throughout the three days of the Tournament offering pitch/court-side assistance only. Ambulances will be on site throughout the tournament in the event that a player needs to be taken to hospital. Injured players who are medically signed off by the Tournament Doctor must not participate any further. Players advised to discontinue play due to injury will be required to adhere to advice given or face removal from the Tournament. Injured players requiring hospital treatment may be taken from The Sevens Stadium by ambulance. Costs incurred henceforth will be for the player s own account. Note: it is customary for medical service providers to charge patients when treatment takes place. Patients then claim expenses back through their personal medical insurer. Tournament participants are therefore strongly advised to bring a credit card to the tournament in case of emergency. 2) Public First Aid Centre Public First Aid Centres are located at the village side of the DHL (West) stand and the village side of the dnata (East) stand. 3) Invitation Teams Strapping & Physio Players requiring strapping or physio treatment may use the professional service provided in the Strapping & Physio Room which is located on the ground floor of the Players Club on the Pitch 7 side of the building. 9 INSURANCE All players are required to have medical insurance that covers them for playing competitive sport (including rugby and netball) and participating in the Tournament. Players needing to purchase medical insurance for Tournament specific cover may contact the official insurance provider Andrea McNulty on or call her on DRESS CODE The Stadium - Participants are reminded to be culturally sensitive and respect the UAE rules and with this in mind appropriately modest clothing should be worn at all times in and around the stadium. Swimwear is not permitted to be worn outside the pool enclosure. Pool Area - Pool attire should be limited to trunks or shorts for men and bikinis and swimming costumes for women. For women, wearing thongs or going topless is not allowed neither is nudity for either gender. PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES Participants are reminded that no promotional activities can take place within the venue. Teams are reminded that due to merchandising constraints the official Tournament logo may not be reproduced or replicated on team kit or any apparel. Please see Section 13 of the Tournament Rules for further information regarding sponsorship and commercial/promotional activities. OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER The official Tournament photographer will be offering a service to provide team specific photographs taken throughout the Tournament. Those wishing to take advantage of this service should contact SPORTDXB at info@sportdxb.com FOOD & BEVERAGE Players Buffet - Players will have access to a Players Only buffet located at the east end of the Players Club. Teams that have pre-booked meals can just turn up for them with the voucher provided. Teams that have not prebooked meals may purchase meal vouchers at a cost of 65AED per head at the Players Buffet Tent. Meals will be served from 11.00am until 9 pm. Complimentary water will be available during all games on all pitches/ courts and in the changing rooms. Bars and food outlets are located throughout the Rugby Village, behind the DHL & Family (West) Stand and dnata (East) Stand, behind and on the upper deck of the Airbus Stand (South), and there will also be F&B outlets along the South bank of Pitch 2. 10 Bars and food outlets will operate three methods for payment as follows: 1. Cashless - The cashless option allows individuals to purchase a wristband and preload it with credit to spend in F&B outlets around site 2. Cash 3. Credit card The following payment methods will be available: F&B Outlets Cash or cashless Liquor Outlets Cashless or credit card PLAYER SEATING Invitation Tournament teams have dedicated seating in the Airbus (South) stand on the upper level, with access from the rugby village, opposite the Heineken Tavern. In order to enter this stand players must have Invitation Tournament player accreditation. TICKETS FOR SUPPORTERS If teams require tickets for supporters go to To have tickets set aside for collection at the start of the tournament, please details to dubai.7s@thesevens.ae Payment will be required in cash or by credit card upon collection from the Registration Tent. TOURNAMENT TRANSPORT & PARKING Invitation Players will be able to park in a dedicated area and access the Stadium through Gate 7. Team buses will be allocated an exclusive position in this area. Team buses must display the appropriate car park pass. Teams will be issued with a bus parking pass when the Squad Registration Sheet is submitted at the Registration Tent. Invitation Tournament players are not able to park at the Players Club car park and access to this area is not available. Taxis will be available from the vicinity of the main public entrance throughout the three days of the tournament. Complimentary public shuttle buses will run on Thursday (6pm until 12am), as well as Friday and Saturday (6pm until 1am) from The Sevens Stadium back to a variety of popular destinations across Dubai. DUBAI SEVENS MERCHANDISE OUTLET The merchandise outlet is located in the Rugby Village near the Tavern Tent. Purchases can be made using cash or credit card in this outlet.
