Fish Group Keiichi Matsuura Na2onal Museum of Nature and Science
What We Learned from CMS Four groups made great successes in each field in terms of research and capacity building Scien3sts from par3cipant countries published many ar3cles and field guides Workshops and training courses organized for young scien3sts and students However No cross cu?ng researches done Communica3ons limited within each group, not among different groups Budgets for field works 3ghtly limited
Interna3onal Workshops & Training Fish Group 2003: Langkawi Malaysia, 2004 Phuket, Thailand 2005 Nga Trang, Vietnam 2006 Bintang Island, Indonesia 2007 Port Dickson Malaysia 2008 Panay Islands, Univ. of Visayas Phillipines 2009 Songkhla, Thailand 2010 Ryukyu, Okinawa
Student involvement in JSPS fish workshop Songkhla,THAILAND: Port Dickson, MALAYSIA:- 2007
Collaborating with experts from JSPS team towards better capacity building within ASEAN countries
ACHIEVEMENTS in Malaysia through JSPS Collabora2on: Greater awareness on importance of ichthyological research including fish taxonomy by university managers BeLer techniques and management of fish collec2on specimens knowledge acquired through series of workshops and direct communica2ons Increase in Malaysian species checklists and wider study areas/sampling as a result of more intensified funding & research Some new junior ichthyologists joining the research area e.g. UMT has fish museum & curator, UMS recrui2ng young lecturers working as ichthyologist (e.g. Dr Seah Ying Giat, Dr Amiruddin Ahmad, Mr Yusri Yusof and Mrs Si2 Tanzil Mariam) Easier to source for research grants from university on fish study par2cularly on interna2onal collabora2ve projects (good for ranking of university)
What the Fish Group members have done in the beginning stage (FY 2011) Discussions for ACORE projects in several participants A few field trips A field guide for fishes of Malaysia published Challenges for the participants Fund raising strongly needed How to mobilize research incentives among participants Set a clear goal How to make the cross cutting subject with other groups
Universities actively involved in ichthyological research in Malaysia Marine fish & aquaculture Marine and freshwater fish Marine and freshwater fish & aquaculture Marine fish & aquaculture
Fish habitat covered in the study and their identified researchers Seagrass; - Aziz A. (UPM) & Mazlan A.G. (UKM) Mangrove & Estuarine:- Mazlan A.G. (UKM), Simon K.D. (UKM) Aziz, A. Mabel Matsumoto (UMS, Sabah) Montane (Fresh Water):- Ambak, A. (UMT), Samat, A.,(UKM) Amiruddin, A. (UMT) Coral reef:- Yusri, Y. (UMT) study leave Open Fishing Ground:- Mazlan A.G. (UKM), Seah Y.G. (UMT), Ambak, A. (UMT)
June 2011:- Joint field survey of Pufferfishes (Tetraodontiformes) in Northeastern Sabah, Malaysia Prof Dr Keiichi Matsuura (NMSN-Tokyo) Prof Dr Mazlan A.G. (UKM) Assoc. Prof Dr Aziz Arshad (UPM) 2010: Joint Field Survey in the Terengganu Coastal Water, Peninsular Malaysia Prof Dr Hirouki Motomura Mr Mizuki Matsunoma UMT Research Staff Publication of a new Fish Book: Fishes of Terengganu: east coastal water of Peninsular Malaysia
Research work in Philippines in 2011 Comparison of seagrassassociated juvenile fish assemblages in 3 sites in central Philippines (UPV) Transient fish assemblages in mangrove habitats in southern Guimaras, Central Philippines (UPV) Species composition of fry fisheries in sardine-dominated fishing grounds (UPV, CI Phils & BFAR) Investigations on the Siganus fuscescens/ canaliculatus complex (UPV, BUTC, UPDil, MSU Naawan)
Seagrass-associated juvenile fish assemblages Palompon Talibon Concepcion Fish Crab Holothuroid Shrimp Echinoid Gastropod Differences in abundance & diversity Contribu3on of fish to total biomass Dominated by Tetraodon2dae and Apogonidae Arothron manilensis (Concepcion) vs Canthigaster compressa Fowleria variegata (Palompon) vs Apogon margaritophorus Resource partitioning (?) Seasonal abundances Gut contents
WHAT NEXT in Malaysia?: Future Plans on Ichthyology Works between Asean Core Group-JSPS with in Next 5 years Acquisition of domestic research grant by each of members in the country e.g. Matching Grant!! Does it work? Capacity Building: More young Scientists to come a board To publish books on marine fishes of Malaysia (further updates on Malaysian marine fish species) (from Merambong Seagrass species To establish proper specimen collection in university (National level???) To enhance greater collaboration amongst Malaysian ichthyologists in universities joint research and student exchange (under international mobility programme) UPM & UKM research universities better funding for research with international institutions - To continue collaboration with JSPS working members
What have been done in the year of 2011 in Vietnam Assessment of the croaker fishes distribute along the coastal area of North Vietnam as the contribution for the IUCN Red List assessment after the Manaus workshop. Presentation of 4 papers at the National Symposium on Marine Science and Technology, October 2011 that deal with the aspects of reef fisheries and dynamic of reef fish communities after establishment of the marine protected areas network. Figure 6. Sampling of croaker fish, familiy Sciaenidae in the North coastal area Keep going on to review of the natural distribution of coastal fishes in North Vietnam
Proposition for the next phase of collaboration Grouping of Fish Research team in Vietnam, period Dr Nguyen Van Quan, team leader, Institute of marine environment and resources Coral reef fishes Mr Lai Duy Phuong, member, Institute of marine environment and resources Coral reef fishes Mr. Nguyen Duc The, member Institute of marine environment and resources Seagrass fishes Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, member, Department of Biology, Hanoi National University Mangrove fishes Mrs. Le Thu Thao, member, Institute of Oceanography, Nhatrang city Grouper fishes 20 other members: Post-graduate students, University lecturers, Volunteers
Location and scope of research activities Locations of this study extend along the coastal areas of Vietnam and focusing on the key ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forest. However some priority sites will be the mangrove, estuary and lagoon area. For example: Coral reef sites: Halong Cat Ba, Nha Trang, Hai Van Son Cha Mangrove site: Hai Phong, Nam Dinh Lagoon, seagrass: Tam Giang Cau Hai
Main subprojects will be applied in the following years 1. Diversity of the coastal fishes in Vietnam lead by Dr. Nguyen Van Quan. 2. Sampling of marine fish specimens along the coastal area of Vietnam and provide the consultant for management of fish collection in National Nature Science Museum lead by Dr. Nguyen Van Quan, Lai Duy Phuong 3. Genetic data base for the species complex such as croaker to determine the distribution and evaluate the endangered level according to the IUCN criteria - lead by Mr. Nguyen Duc The 4. Evaluation of the fish collection in the institution museums and provide the revision checklist of fish in Vietnam sea lead by Le Thu Thao and Nguyen Hoai Nam 5.
