Activity reports for FY 2011: Researcher exchange Being accomplished as originally planned Long term variation of zooplankton in the Straits of Malacca: Malaysia Japan Plankton in the sea-surface microlayer of coral reefs Japan Malaysia Ecology of edible jellyfishes: Japan-Malaysia, Thailand; Malaysia Japan

Related collaborative projects Soka U UKM: MOU Pelagic ecosystem of coral-reef areas J. Nishikawa: JSPS GiA for Sci. Res. Jellyfish fisheries S. Ohtsuka: JSPS RONPAKU, K. Srinui Phylogeography of calanoid copepods T. Toda, R. Nakajima: Soka U. Res. Fund Coral reef food-web study applying stable-isotope analysis S. Nishida: JSPS GiA for Sci. Res. Census of marine zooplankton in Southeast Asia E. Metillo: Approved 3-yr project Sardine recruitment and zooplankton

Research plan: Zooplankton phylogeography All country Copepods, Mysids, Chaetognaths, Lucifer Morphological-genetic analysis Collaborative with other projects Young scientists, PhD research 2. Ecology of edible and other jellyfishes Malaysia (UPM), Thailand (BU), Vietnam (IMER), Japan Fisheries/economy-related research Sound basis of ecology & taxonomy Multiple approach: Population dynamics, life history, molecular genetics, stable isotope 3. Coral-reef pelagic ecosystem Malaysia (UKM, UTM), Japan 4. Zooplankton identification manual Copepoda, Cnidaria, Tunicata 5. Long-term trend of zooplankton communities Malaysia (Straits of Malacca, Gulf of Thailand)

Research plan: Zooplankton database (Miyamoto & all country) Augmenting gaps in Southeast Asia Data mining by each country s members (e.g. data reports, papers, theses) Quality control by expert members Data standardization and conversion to digitized format Data sheet Station map Graph Data analysis Guarantee credit / authorship / priority of data providers

Exchange of members: 2012 Azman Abdul Rahim: June August, 2012, Malaysia-Japan Distribution and bio-diversity of amphipods in Malaysian waters R. Nakajima: Oct., 2012, Japan-Malaysia Distribution and bio-diversity of zooplankton in Malaysian coastal waters S. Ohtsuka September, 2012, Japan-Thailand Ecological study on symbionts on rhizostome jellyfish in Thailand Mulyadi: April, 2012, Indonesia-Japan Taxonomic analysis and description of new copepod species Metillo: TBD, 2012, Philippine-Japan Stable isotope analysis on food habits of coexisting shrimps

Proposals for new members: 2012 Dr. Azman Abdul Rahim (UKM, Ph.D.; recommended by T. Toda) Only expert of amphipod taxonomy in Southeast Asia. Dr. Haruko Kurihara PhD. Research Associate, Transdisciplinary Research Organization for Subtropics and Island Studies, University of the Ryukyus; recommended by T. Toda Among the most active researchers in this field of impacts of climate changes to marine ecosystems. Dr. Zaleha Kassim (Associate Professor/Lecturer; recommended by N. Iwasaki) Universiti Malaysia Terengganu Horseshoe crab, aquaculture, copepod culture, benthic harpacticoids Mr. Pham The Thu (IMER, genetics of jellyfishes) Mr. Nhan (IMER, Hanoi Univ., MSc student) Mr. Perumal Kuppan (UPM, technical staff, methodology) Mr. Truong Si Hai Trinh (NIO, Vietnam, zooplankton ecology) Ms. Siti Balqis Razak (UPM) Mr. Nicholas Khong (UPM)

Other proposals / suggestions For mining/rescue of biodiversity data that are sleeping in universities, institutes, etc. of Southeast Asian countries, it would be advantageous to issue official letters of data request from the ACORE Office. This would be particularly effective in such cases where a young member visit an institute to collect a dataset. A system to pay costs for provided data may also be considered. Collaboration and/or help in response to the flood in Thailand might be considered, e.g. support/assistance in research activities, such as researches on assessment of the impacts of the flood on marine fauna/flora/ecosystem, including those on jellyfish fisheries and redtides. Training is still needed and highly requested by collaborating coutries; necessitating ways of securing budgetary support to hold training courses.
