April 2016 Edition
From The Secretary s Desk Daniel Somerfield I hope everyone likes to new look Scales. Please feel free to let me know if you have any ideas or comments about what you would like to see or hear about. This is your club and you all have a say in its direction and running. There are a lot of changes that are currently being addressed and these will be discussed in upcoming meetings. A lot of the concepts are based around what will encourage members to be more involved. We have such a great diversity of people in the club with so much enthusiasm and ideas to offer. So I implore you all to speak up and have your say in the next few months leading up the AGM in August. I have heard quite a few times from the plethora of people I talk to why would I want to join a fishing club when I can just fish for free anyway. This is very true but the statement kind of misses the point. In our present day, information is so readily available to anyone with internet access. This means that fishing spots and tips are online 24/7. I can see the doubter s point but also know that half of what you hear is false and the other half is exaggerated. So that leaves these guys with 25% factual information to plan a day on the water. If you factor in tides, weather and the current interest rate, then things don t look good to boat a fish. I am full of it! But my point is that I think we, as a club, are amazing in the way we all share tips, tricks and stories with each other. I know there would be no way I would have experienced all that I have in the past few years if it wasn t for you all. I also say to my sceptical friends that I have never met so many people, from so many backgrounds with such interesting stories to tell. Have a chat to anyone at a club barbeque and you will be surprised what you will discover. I have heard stories from Vietnam while awaiting an impending storm to hit us. We have members who can fly and who can dive. I know people who can weld, smelt, build, fix and design all manner of creations. It s amazing to hear where people come from, what they have done and what motivates them in their lives. These are the aspects of a club that need to be valued and treasured. To me, that is what being in a club is all about. Dan
CANIA TAG-A-LONG 2016 Helen Johnson Another tag-a-long to Cania has come and gone and what a time was had by all. For some of us, naming Don, Tracy, Perry, Terri and myself we had an extended break of 8 days. The weather was great and the camping lovely amongst the bush and birds. Plenty of space and trees for shade, even the dogs had a great time. One must wonder why Perry had his BIG boat up there, well it wasn t all about fishing we had many other activities whilst we were at Cania. Namely swimming, water skiing, chasing red claw, cooking, bush walking, bird watching and celebrating Perry s birthday. Don and Perry s Boats tied up and a leisurely morning swim up the back of the Dam..
Below is Marie on the wake board being towed around keeping nice and cool. Perry up on his skies Then came the red claw hunt. Between Don, Tracy and Perry. The red claw were there for the taking.. and then for the cooking The red claw were cleaned and meat cooked in the tail shell. As for the recipe, you will have to ask Tracy who was the master chef. But there was garlic and onions ect. Even a couple of bass got put into the pan and tasted quite nice with the same sauce. As the days passed, lots of little activities were undertaken. Tracy tried out her Christmas present of a metal detector, and tried out her luck down in the river bed beside the park. All to no avail. A tin can or nail or two were the only finds. The dogs loved the stroll and enjoyed the outing.
Then there was the bush walking and bird watching. Maree and Terri ventured up to the Dripping Rock, however the area was a little dry and very little dripping was to be seen. There were birds. From shags to Pelicans and Eagles on the lake to the kookaburras, parrots and butcher birds at camp.
We did do a lot of fishing as well, mostly up the back of the dam amongst the numerous lily pads and off the rock walls. Most members who fished the weekend only lure fished while some of us put a bit of time into catching live Shrimp and bait fished for a lot of the time. With this story I will put a lot of the member s fish photos in and these tell the story on their own. All members caught fish and those that chased the red claw had a good feed. 10 Spoils Prove Hard To Find At The Bill Proctor Memorial. Daniel Somerfield A picturesque day greeted us as the 2016 Bill Proctor Memorial Tournament got underway. The fishing was difficult with those lucky enough to land legal fish having to work hard for their bounty. Over the day competitors targeted the weed edges, timber as well as the deeper sections of the lake. Deb Weeks was at the weigh-in to award the winner on behalf of the Proctor family. Russell Pardon was the angler who shone through on the day and was embraced as the champion of the tournament for this year. The defending champ, Alex Turner, found himself tied for second position with Pete Buwalda. All participants vow to return next year to challenge Russ. I am sure he will relish the competition. The tournament was held in great spirits. We honoured Bill Proctor s memory and his contribution to bass fishing in our region and in particular Lake Gregory. We will remember the Bass Man.

The concept of the tournament is in the format and spirit of modern tournament fishing. Honours go to the largest single bream by length. To promote catch and release it is preferred that the fish be photographed on a mat and returned to the water with minimal stress. To combine this with the monthly meeting, the event will be on our own Burnett River. It is an exciting new occasion and one that I know will be embraced by the club. Prepare for the shootout!
