5 President s Report Well the weather Gods were very kind to us allowing us to bask in beautiful sunshine at the Cumberland State Forest where we recently celebrated our 31st Annual Large Koi Show. This year the paperwork was brand new and thanks to the kind efforts of Shona Macskasy from Western Australia worked a treat. I would like to congratulate everyone involved with the Show your efforts all contributed to another successful day. Especially to for taking out another coveted GC title with his sanke and also to Steve Levi for taking GC B with his sensational kinginrin matsukawabaki. As well a special thank you to our three Judges. A very special thank you to my friend John Ling whose photographic efforts on the day brings us the photos of nearly every winner chosen by the judges for our magazine. A big effort John but it really sets our results pages apart from the rest. Now that our major Show for the year is behind us, we now get to enjoy the KSA s 2012 Koi Pet & Garden Show held at Fairfield Showground on the Sunday 20th May. I know many of our Members along with Kate and I will be entering this event. Hope we can see many of our members there to support this wonderful event on the day. Winter is approaching and as our pond water temperature starts to plummet I feed only wheat germ and vegetables to our koi, reducing this down gradually until the water hits 12C, at which time I stop feeding completely. This feeding rest does no harm and supposedly strengthens the skeleton on young koi. More importantly it reduces the chances of your koi developing problems, especially tumors etc caused by the kois low metabolic rate and their inability to adequately digest their food during these cold temperatures. I strongly recommend this practice be considered, especially by any new or novice members, as a good koi keeping discipline. A reminder to everyone who will be placing koi into any of our auctions of the newly introduced size limits as well as the banning of all white or all red non metallic koi. This has been instigated to try to improve our quality standards into the future. Finally our Young Koi Show (Size 2 & 3) will be coming up on the Sunday 30th September. I would dearly like to encourage members who have never entered to give it some serious consideration. Please talk to me for any queries you may have regarding this. Only by increasing the participation rate will we ensure a strong koi club into the future. Yours in Koi, Ian Andrews Available from our Supply Officers. June July

9 Changes to AKA Auctions Reminder Following the disappointing dismal sales results achieved over the last two or so AKA Auctions, your Committee has made several changes to try to improve the net results and the improvement in the quality of koi sold to the general public. (This is one of our Club s foundation principles, to improve the quality of koi). First change: Starting immediately we have increased our advertising expenditure to place AKA Auction advertisements into more publications, including the Vietnamese Newspapers and also the Asian Lifestyle Magazine. Hopefully this will increase the number of potential bidders that will be attending. Second Change: Commencing at our June 17 th Auction, the minimum size acceptable will be increased to 75 mm, up from the current 50 mm. This mirrors the rules implemented at all KSA Auctions and is designed to eliminate the growing-on of cull low quality fry. Third Change: Commencing at our June 17 th Auction, all non-metallic White koi (shiro muji) and all non-metallic Red Koi (aka muji), will be banned at our Auctions. This again is designed to make Members cull these undesirable fish and not use our Auctions as a vehicle to rid these koi and to lower the overall quality of the koi we have for sale. Culling is important if we are ever going to raise the quality standard of koi in our Club. Any koi presented that does not meet these new requirements will not be allowed to be sold and will return home with their owner. It is hoped these by introducing these changes that in time AKA s Auctions will improve and the quality level of koi will be greatly improved. BANNED BANNED June July

12 AKA s 31st Annual Large Koi Show 2012 After the non-event of summer this year, everyone was seriously worried about what sort of a day we could expect for the AKA s 31 st Annual Large Koi Show Sydney has had an unprecedented amount of rain as well as cold temperatures and overcast skies. More like the UK than Australia! Although the Cumberland State Forest site at Castle Hill is very beautiful and an ideal size for us, on a rainy day, there isn t much in the way of cover! However, we need not have worried. The weather finally came good with a gorgeous, warm, calm, blue-sky weekend. This was great for the guys setting up the show on Saturday, as well as for everyone on the Sunday show day. It must be remembered (and not always mentioned) that for an event like this to happen at all, let alone run smoothly, a huge amount of planning occurs and for several months beforehand, meetings have taken place, organising all the myriad details most people attending a show just don t notice, but which are absolutely essential. For example, who will to accompany the judges around the bins, who will cater for people working at the show site, who will set up all the bins, air-lines, bin numbers, who will decorate the show site, organise a tent to cover the results computer and operator and ropes to keep the public out of the centre ring, etc. etc. etc! And that s not the half of it. Until you have actually done the job, you can have no idea what a task it is to check all the entries and sort out the right number and positioning of bins for each exhibitor, so that larger koi are segregated from smaller ones. This makes both an easier task for the judges and a more impressive show for visitors. Koi of similar size, especially large koi, actually show to better advantage when they are together. I take my hat off to Dianna Banning, who for years did this job entirely on her own, as well as deal with all the results and awards at every show. It is a huge task! This year we had a new computer Our esteemed judges 10 AKA REPORTER

13 programme to manage all the koi entries and show results, very kindly supplied by its developer, Shona Macskasy from Western Australia. Shona came over to Sydney for our first use of the system this year and spent the show day instructing Martin Rocliffe and myself in the programme s management. There are distinct advantages to the new programme, exhibitors can download their entries, with photographs, directly at home via the Internet and the photos are then linked automatically to judging sheets for each class. Since they are then printed out, it is much easier for the judges to quickly identify koi in each bin for the class in hand. As results are entered, winners lists are automatically organised. Our only embarrassment this year was running out of coloured ink for the printer! The last few printouts luckily on results, rather than judging sheets were in black and white. Next year we will definitely make sure of a spare colour ink cartridge. The showground was a tribute to everyone s hard work in setting it up with an excellent arrangement of clearly labelled bins and a lovely display of gaily-painted Koinbori or koi socks mounted on long bamboo poles fluttering in the gentle breeze. Posters on the perimeter fence added to the festive atmosphere. We have already decided to obtain more Koinobori for next year; they looked so good! The tent, as a failsafe against possible rain, proved very valuable in keeping off the quite fierce sunshine on the day. Koi numbers entered this year were lower than last due to a few exhibitors being unable to show, but we ended up with a very respectable 268 lovely quality koi for our judges Mr Tan Lee King from Singapore and Sydney s Mr Agus Djafar. Grand Champion was won by Heinz Zimmermann with an excellent size 6 Sanke, while Reserve went to Ian and I for Duchess, our pond favourite and very unusual Koromo Sanke. Grand Champion B; for non-go-sanke koi, was won by Steve Levi for his beautiful Gin-Rin Matsukawabake. Graham Fremeli was delighted to take Best Baby with one of his superb young Kin Gin Rin Showa. A koi that stole the show for me this year however, was another young Gin Rin Matsukawabake owned by Paul Miglionica. The clarity of the white against depth and lustre of black on this koi was really special with the added bonus of bright gin-rin adding a lovely sparkle. I will be very interested to watch this koi s progress over the years; such superb quality is always a joy to see. Ian awarded the koi his President s Choice. All the hard work paid off. It was an excellent show, enjoyed by all who attended. Most of the koi settled down well in the bins with the usual one or two determined jumpers. A Kohaku of ours broke its dorsal fin through this exercise, probably during transit. A very useful tip given to us at the end of the day was to blow up a few koi bags with oxygen and float them on top of the water in the transit tanks to protect the koi from the roof of the transport tubs. We will definitely try this next time out. The only other casualty that I know of was to an older Ogon of Heinz s, which died at the end of the show, we think, to a heart attack. Quite unpredictable, but very sad, none the less. It was good to get the koi home and settled back into the pond, the travel tanks washed out and dinner organised! It s a very long day and not the end of things for the intrepid volunteers who then had to go back on Monday to disinfect and store the bins for the next show. A huge thank you to everyone who gave so much time and effort to this show, it wouldn t happen without you. Next year is never far away! Plans are already in process for improvements. Ian s dearest wish is for more members to try their hand at showing. It is not that difficult, and while the odd accident to a koi occasionally happens, they are the exception rather than the rule. If you need help in getting your koi to and from the show, it is there for the asking. So.. make 2013 the year and enter your koi for the next large koi show! Or even better, have a practise run at the young koi show in September. See you there! Kate McGill June July

50 2012 Dave Pogson Breeders Trophy and Jack Cohen Memorial Trophy Our May General Meeting night again saw the celebration of our annual Dave Pogson Breeders Trophy and Jack Cohen Memorial Trophy for those dedicated koi breeders in our club. This year the number of entrants exhibiting 10 koi from the last breeding season was high and pleasingly there were a number of very high quality koi on show. Most tanks had at least two or three show quality koi. This year Paul and Ian took on the very difficult task of judging. The Awards were set up to remember Dave Pogson and Jack Cohen. They both would have been very pleased with the koi on display and by the interest shown by the large number of attendees the night attracted. Paul and Ian narrowed their decision down to two bins. Both bins contained kinginrin showas, which they thought must have been from the same breeder, as the quality in both bins was stunning. They were surprised to learn later that both bins belonged to two separate members. All these young koi had remarkable gin, wonderful patterns and good body shape. The final decision came down to the number of show quality koi in each vat with this year s Dave Pogson Award going to Graham and Lee Fameli, with very close runners up being Ron and Max Farrugia. Also on the night a young koi is selected as one of the best tategoi (koi with future potential) for the Jack Cohen Memorial Trophy. This year a very promising young kumonryu, with beautiful white skin and stunning black eyes was selected. This young koi was bred by Ron and Max Farrugia and a very worthy koi to take out the Jack Cohen Trophy. Congratulations to all our breeders for your efforts in striving to improve the quality of your koi and we all look forward to seeing some these koi at our future koi shows. Graham and Lee take out Dave Pogson while Ron and Max win the Jack Cohen Memorial Trophy. Winning bin of Kinginrin Showas. 48 AKA REPORTER

CLEAR-POND formula - the forefront of the new Bio-Technology products currently being developed by Universities throughout the world.
