4 Annual Koi Show Summary Another Show over for another year! I am always so grateful to work with such a great team of members in the months leading up to the Show. As I mentioned at the Presentation Dinner, the generosity of our members is 100% behind the success of the Show - from the Show committee, to every person on Executive committee taking on additional roles, to stewards, to the logistics team, to every member who helps with transporting judges or putting on lunches for them - you are the reason we can do this event each year and I thank you. Congratulations to the Bennett family on winning Grand Champion with their beautiful 71cm Showa, which has won GC once before in After the Show was over, head judge Tan Lee King, enquired why he had heard this fish being referred to as Bunny and Allan explained the pattern of the sumi looked like a rabbit - Tan Lee had to check the fish himself and sure enough was amazed to see the rabbit pattern emerge. Congratulations also to Sang Dong on Grand Champion 1st Runner Up with his 77cm Koromo (1 of many prizes!), and the Bennett family with their 79cm Kumonryu (a personal favourite variety of mine) taking out Grand Champion 2nd Runner Up. Thank you to Tan Lee King for making the journey from Singapore for his second visit to Perth, and putting my muscles to the test on the day before the Show! When I was putting the judges schedule together, I ed Tan Lee and let him know he arrived one day before our other 2 judges and was there anything he would like to do in Perth that I could organise for him? He replied he would like to go on a hike over 10 kilometers - luckily I also like hiking so we drove up to John Forrest National Park on the Saturday and did a 16km walk - he maintains that I tortured him for the day and I maintain that it was all his fault that I could barely walk on Show day! Thank you to Wilhelm Geldenhuys from South Africa and Lee Nguyen from Sydney, both their first time judging for us, and a pleasure to have hosted over the 4 days they were here. It is one of the main privileges of the Show chair position that I get to spend a lot of time with people such as these and learn so much from them while we drive from one side of Perth to the other! Thank you to each and every Exhibitor - I believe everyone won at least one prize, even our 5 first time exhibitors, but going beyond that, the number of koi and quality on display at this year s Show was a huge success in showing the WA public what amazing pets we keep. I had a few chances to walk around the Show ring and the feedback from visitors was so positive. Apart from the fish and the Show ring (which looks better and better every year), the other thing that really made this year s Show was our vendors, an area we hope to grow in the future. From Dr Loh - The Fish Vet, to bonsai, orchids and Japanese flowering arranging. Thank you to them all for attending our Show and we hope to see you next year. Our numbers were at an impressive 298 fish when entries closed (this was revised to 278 when Alan Peck had to withdraw his/tim Leroy s entries after being admitted to hospital - we all missed you at the Show Alan and wish you a speedy recovery!) The number of Mature and Jumbo fish continues to grow each year, a testament to our members koi keeping abilities. We are always reviewing class sizes and groupings and will do so again shortly to see if we need to make any changes for next year. Thank you again to everyone, looking forward to next year s Show already. Shona Macskasy Show Chair 4

14 Advertising The club is offering some advertising space on the trailer which we take to each fish related event several times a year. It would be seen on the freeway and roads by many others on the way to and from these events as well. This is great way to help the club fund raise and to advertise your business. We have 1 spot left on a 3 year term for just $300. You will be able to put your advertising on both sides of the trailer to ensure it is always seen. You will need to provide the advert in adhesive sticker form at a size equivelant to A2 Poster paper, which is roughly 60x40cm in landscape format. We can help put you in touch with someone able to produce this for you. Any club member is free to advertise any business they like, it doesn t have to be koi or pond related, subject to committee approval. If you are interested please contact the committee info@koiclubwa.com to secure your spot. 15 KSWA Northern Branch May Meeting Date: May 9, 2017 Attendance: 21 Apologies: Meeting Opened 7.40pm Northern Branch Financials: $5, Barry Ambler missed the meeting and I think this would be the first time in my memory. Barry crook with the flu (get the jab Barry!) I called him and he sounded awful but making a recovery. Good to see Tim, Martin and Phong returning to the meeting after absences due to work commitments, good to have you back guys. All were reminded of the Outing to Henley Brook Tavern SUNDAY 25TH JUNE AT 12 NOON. All KSWA Members are invited but emphasis is on wives and children so we want to see as many families as possible. Time we gave back a little, so each Membership will receive $30 from the Northern Branch as a subsidy. See you all there. I am sure everyone is busy getting ready for the Annual Show and we had a brief discussion on this during the Meeting. Very satisfying that we have a number of first time showers this year. Well done guys and well done to the Members who have been helping these Members get their fish into the Show for the first time. Jun had a presentation on nitrate and other methods for reducing you nitrate level which included anoxic filtration. Allan led a discussion on nitrate levels in pond and how he struggles with high nitrates. It was Shona s initiative to do a, This month in your pond. Shona manned the whiteboard and all present contributed to the ideas and points that we should all be doing to keep our koi in top condition. It is always a problem for your committee to keep things interesting and this appears to be a hit with most members contributing their ideas. Whilst we largely centred around getting ready for the show, some of the other ideas included; Reduce feeding or switch to low protein feed like wheat germ check ph, GH or KH and buffer accordingly Table Show was again well supported by the members. Thanks guys and well done to all who make the effort. Des and Martin did the un envious task of judging. 16 KSWA Northern Branch May Meeting Allan tried to get away with no one noticing it was his birthday... he didn t. Raffle winners were; Tom, Sang & Tony C. Chase the ace didn t go off after Dave and Denzil had a chance. $1000 is on the line next month. Meeting closed at 9.45pm. Some made it home at 1.30am the rumor is Brett lost $20 and they were looking for it (well he is 50% Scottish!! ) 16
17 KSWA Southern Branch May Meeting Date: May 24, 2017 Attendance: 12 Apologies: Alan, Tim, Charlie and Josie. Fred welcomed everyone at 7.40pm for the last meeting in South Perth. It was assumed others were busy preparing for the koi show. Financial Report: $ In the process of cleaning out storage cupboards, there were a number of archive documents dating back some 25 years ago. Bill made comment that the first KSWA meeting at the South Perth Rotary Hall took place back in It was also pointed out that meetings back then faced the other way. Jun asked members, if they have photos, or know of anyone that would have photos dating back, to send them to him (president@koiclubwa.com). Bill said we probably won t get many photos as camera technology was significantly different from today. There will be a memorabilia presentation at the next Southern Branch Meeting if there are enough photos. NEW MEETING VENUE: Willetton Pavilion Wednesday 28th of June Southern Branch Meeting The consultation period received no feedback and it was assumed everyone is happy to move to Willetton Pavilion. There are two buildings! We are in the white building and not the brown. All the walls are brick, no plaster walls. The branch agreed to spend $100 on a second hand projector screen for the venue. Also there is no storage at the new venue and everyone was asked to help. Miki took the mugs and blue bins and Fred to store other items for the time being. Fred stated, KSWA Membership ($50) and ZNA Memberships ($140) are now due. Shona then gave a quick update on the koi show/ presentation dinner including numbers and advised members to get in contact with Des, if they can volunteer with show setup on Saturday. Most of the work is done at 9am 11am with the weather looking good! There are 26 exhibitors with five first time showers and around 270 fish. Jun then did a workshop to get members taking about retrofitting a poorly designed pond. After giving a brief about the UWA Japanese Garden and a budget of $5,000, Jun got groups of 3-4 to discuss what improvements they would make. Groups then reported back. Every group had a different take on the project which was great to see. The idea was to get new and experience members discussing old/new methods/ technologies of koi keeping. Table Show Table Show B: 1st Platinum Ogon (Miki Mo) Table Show Doitsu: Leather Ogon (Miki Mo) Under 35cm Competition Non Gosanke: 1st Yamabuki Ogon, 2nd Platinum Ogon & 3rd Leather Ogon (Miki Mo) Thank you to Miki for bringing fish to the meeting and Fred for judging. Congratulations to our raffle winners: Jason/Vineseen, Bill and Tony. 17
18 KSWA Southern Branch May Meeting After the break Jun talked about the National Carp Survey. Jun gave an update on the number of completions and encouraged everyone to do it. After going through the questions, it was noted by Allan that we should be doing the survey to support the guys in East. 6months ago, the release of KHV was 100% but after all the hard work, industry and international involvement the possibility has decrease. So please support the clubs and complete the survey. For more information 25th of June Koi Club family day Henley Brook Tavern West Swan Road (Family day bring wife and kids). See newsletter for more details. Bill and Laura sent their apologies for some of the upcoming events. The club wished them a lovely and well deserved holiday! Meeting closed 9.30pm. End of an era and the start of a new one. Don t forget the next meeting will be at Willetton Pavilion. Willetton Reserve Pavilion Willetton Reserve, Apsley Road, Willetton 18
