1 C C f San [NET) P.O. Box San Diego, CA info@koiclubsandiego.org KCSD Web page i nfo/pveh October MEETING October 9, 2011 Scott Yee & Erica Lizarraga 582 Port Harwick Chula Vista (619) Please remember your chairs The President's Corner By Matt Rhoades in the operation of running the show. And as I do hope, that those that were present at the September General Meeting, at my place, had an enjoyable time. From my discussion about the trials and triumphs of my pond, to showing off the filtration set-up on the side tank, and Tom Ross talking on general koi-upkeep, I personally had a blast. Of course, now my side tank is sparkling clear, not like its appearance on meeting day; but that the breaks when it comes to the koi hobby. The dates for the 2012 KCSD Koi Show are Thursday, February 23, 2012 (Load truck at storage and begin to set-up), Friday, February 24, 2012 (continue set-up/start benching incoming fish in the P.M.) Saturday and Sunday, February 25 & 26, 2012 (the koi show) Sunday PM; crews will be tearing down the show). I will be calling on you to step forward and take part in helping to make the club's Silver Anniversary koi show a rousing success. I'll be handing around sign-up sheets at the meetings for you to sign up to assist in this endeavor. We need to start the process of training "new blood" for key positions always, thank you again in advance, for all you do to make each show such a super event. This fall season, I will help to drain and seine out a pool converted to a pond to see the "treasures" that await the new owner of this watery home. My understanding is the previous owner had made a breeding attempt for Hi Bekkos. Can't wait to see what's what. Then there is always my grow-out fish and getting them ready to "show their massiveness..." (And no, none of my fish have been subjected to steroids; unlike some people's fish have been accused of...) See you at the next meeting at Scott Yee and Erica Lizarraga home in Chula Vista. We will be conducting a Q & A session with a panel of knowledgeable people answering your questions (and no; I am definitely NOT, one of those individuals on the panel). So bring your questions for the panel and, of course, your chair. Until then... KEEP KOING... Koi Club of San Diego October 2011 page 1
2 Notes from the Board With the start of Fall we swing into higher gear for the upcoming annual koi show. This year will be our 25th year and deserves some sort of recognition for achievement. We have chose our show pin (it is reprinted further in this newsletter), using a lot of silver for the 25th the surrounding frame, as well as the numbers in the center. Background will be blue. We have paid the initial deposit on space at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Activity center as in years past. Now it is time for you, our membership, to start thinking seriously about how you can help out at the show loading the truck, set up, water quality, raffle ticket sales, fish handling, hospitality, chauffeuring the judges, awards, Saturday banquet, show brochure, tear down, reload the shed-- and many more ways you can help. Some jobs take only an hour or two or can be done from home, others require your presence at the show. Lists will be circulating for you to sign up to help. Please mark your calendars for February 24-26, the last weekend in February, as a chance to give back to KCSD for all the pond assistance and information you have gained. Once again we have run the "QR" code for the website. This is a direct link to us for your smart phone. We have been contacted by Daniel Gurtner whose friend is planning to move. The large koi pond has about 23 koi from 10 to 33 inches by his estimation. Please contact him if you would like to give a few of these koi a new home (619) And finally remember that next month, November, will be the finale of the grow out contest. If you purchased a small fish for the contest in 2010, catch it, bag it and bring it to the November meeting. The fish showing the most growth will win $100, Second place, $75, third $50, least growth $20. The fish will then be judged for "Grand Champion" (prize of $50) and runner up (prize of $25). And not to worry, competitors, the Pierce fish, hearing its size prediction at the Steering Committee Meeting, jumped out of the pond in hopes of finding a better home and will not be competing this year. Trying Something Different - Our October Program By Paul Atkiss, VP Programs Whether you are an everyday Koi keeper ("EKK") or experienced at showing your Koi we all 1) have a nugget of information that just might solve another members issue or problem or 2) need just one more item explained to remove some confusion. Maybe it is a little of both. Part 1 We are asking members to share their ideas with the club. Maybe you have developed a shortcut or an easy approach to maintaining your Koi and/or the pond. Please bring your ideas or maybe even an invention to share with the Club on the 9th. Last month prior to our guest speaker an impromptu discussion on the power outage made it apparent that our club members have some valuable information to share with one another. Part 2 It has been some time since the club did a panel discussion / question and answer session. Assuming we still have questions after Part 1 we will present the questions to our resident experts for their thoughts, insights and answers. Paper will be available at the registration table to submit your questions or topics for discussion to the moderator; you may also send your requests, in advance, from the club's web site "send us a comment" link to the Programs VP ( prior to the Sunday meeting date. Plus we will have a roving microphone for questions from the floor (or is it the yard). Dean Strasser will be bringing his homemade UV lamp (improved flow-rate/less head) to share and the following members are participating on the panel: Jack Chapman, Galen Hansen, Norm Meck, Kristine Peterson, Matt Rhoades, and Bob Welch. So set your DVR to record the Chargers game and please join me at the October 9th meeting; together we can learn and improve our Koi keeping skills. Koi Club of San Diego October 2011 page 2

4 Electricity 101 A talk by Tom Ross given at our September 2011 meeting after the county wide power failure two days Ohm's Law: E=IxR (Volts = Amps times Resistance) Watt's Law: P=IxE (Watts = Volts times Amps) For this calculation, Watts = Volt-Amps (VA), and Kilovolt-Amps (kva) = Watts x Reading the pump motor rating plate: Example 1 AO Smith motor on 1/8 HP Sequence (simple example): 115 V 60 Hz 1.8 A 1550 rpm => 115V x 1.8 A = 207 Watts Example 2 Baldor motor on 1/3 HP Sequence (dual voltage example): Volts: 110/ /230 Annps: 4.3/2.2/13.5/1.75 RPM: 1425/11725 Hz: => for 60 Hz, 115V x 3.5A = Watts Example 3 Lim Wave II 1/2 HP: Volts: 110/220/1115/ Amps: 5.6/2.9/15/2.6 RPM: 14251/1750 HZ: => for 60 Hz, 115V x 5A= 575 Watts Choosing a generator set: Add up a!! your anticipated lo.ack, in Watts. Choose a portable generator with a Running Load rating (not Peak Load!) higher than that total. Example Ponder X has two ponds and a QT. They are running the three pumps shown above. So, total power needed is = Watts. Requires at least 1200W continuous rating. Ponder X's Honda 2000W genset is rated at 1.6 kva = 1600 Watts, adequate plus a bit for an air pump. Outage recovery notes: Electric motors draw a lot of extra power when they start. First of all, set those filters to backwash. You don't want all that dead bacteria in the pond, and there could be some poisonous hydrogen sulfide in the filter water. Start the genset, then plug in each pump; do a quick backwash, rinse, and then restart the filter one pump at a time. Do the biggest pump first, and the smallest one last. This will reduce the chance of overloading your genset. Take your time, don't panic, the fish will be okay. Withhold all food for a few days, check ammonia and nitrite daily, and then start feeding at a reduced amount. If the ammonia starts to come up, stop feeding again until it drops. Salt to 0.15% if you see any nitrite. Remember to keep fresh fuel in your genset, and add some stabilizer to prevent fuel deterioration. Keep the required extension cords handy, along with a gallon or two of gas. And run it every few months to make sure it will start when you need it! NC11Ty41-6IcicrE9 on-11:12 clizcg4ler3 page 4
