Pro Staff Team News April 2010 Volume 7.4 Stop Knots Can Help Make Em Bite Part 1 Ever had any experience with angling accessories called Stop Knots or perhaps Bobber Stops? It s not at all difficult to remember the first time I saw one of them in action. I had a friend who had established a reputation as one of the best crappie fishermen in the area where I was living at the time. I had talked to him several times. He told me he did almost all of his crappie catching with small curly tailed plastic grubs. We happened to be on the same lake one day. I was fishing bass but he was anchored near a rock pile in the middle of the lake. The rocks were a favorite crappie hangout. I had fished it a few times myself. The bass fishing was slow so I decided to run out to where my Mack s Lure Stop Knots can solve a variety of fishing problems for you. friend was anchored to see how he was doing for crappies. I eased up next to where he was anchored and asked how he was doing. Not bad, he said and then pulled up a stringer full of fish to prove it. What are you catching them on? I asked. These grubs I ve told you about, he said. Today they re hitting a blue shade better than the white I usually catch em on. I watched as my friend prepared to cast. As he brought his rod up to do so I was surprised to see that right above his blue shaded grub was a float. He flipped the bobber and grub about 15-feet away from the boat. They plopped into the water and my friend engaged the bail on his spinning reel and relaxed. He didn t relax long. A half minute later his float started easing off to the right and he set the hook. That makes 20, he said as he hoisted a dandy crappie out of the water and into his boat. I didn t know you were fishing that grub beneath a bobber, I said, and how the devil are you getting that grub down where the fish are? Your bobber was right above your hook when you cast it out there. My friend chuckled as he hung (Continued on Page 2)

You can adjust them so they fit anywhere on your line or leader. the crappie he d just caught on his stringer. I m using a Bobber Stop, he said. Then he showed me what he had attached to his line about 5-feet above his lure. The bobber is right above my lure when I cast, he explained, but it floats up the line until it is stopped by the Bobber Stop. Today I have it attached to my line so my lure drops to a depth of about 5-feet. That s where the crappies are holding right now. Sometimes I have to go considerably deeper and now and then they are fairly shallow. I can put the Bobber Stop anywhere on my line. It goes right through my rod guides as I cast or when I reel in. I love these things for crappie fishing. That, as I ve mentioned, was my introduction to a Stop Knot. It happened more than a half century ago. These accessories were new at the time. They are used a whole lot more by knowledgeable an- glers today than they were then--- and with good reason. Sometimes using these handy little accessories can make the difference between catching fish or going home skunked. One of the reasons Stop Knots come to mind right now is because I have been going through the new Mack s Lure 2010 catalog. These Mack s Lure accessories are shown on Page 33 and they are called Stop Knots. Seeing them in the new catalog didn t surprise me. They ve been there in past Mack s catalogs. What seeing them pictured did do was bring to mind some of my own experiences where these handy little rigs are concerned. They also reminded me of a Mexican fishing adventure where the Mack s Lure Stop Knots helped put bass in the boat. My fishing partner on that occasion was Bob Schmidt, the soft spoken guy who calls the shots at Mack s Lure. While Schmidt is soft spoken he s also as sharp as a Gamakatsu Hook fresh out of the package. I watched what he does with his Mack s Lure Stop Knots on that Mexican fishing trip I mentioned and learned something in the process. Keep an eye peeled for my next column. I ll share some of Schmidt s Stop Knot tricks for bass fishing. I ll also detail exactly why the Stop Knots can be of such importance if you re a crappie fisherman. -To Be Continued-

Doing What s Important Instead of Worrying About Being Important During the past weeks, our ministry has spent a great deal of time with lay-leaders and pastors. Through our pastor s workshops, Iron Sharpens Iron Conferences, and the New Zealand Discipleship Workshop our staff has met many struggling men who are trying to get their lives into balance. As men reviewed their passion for success in light of God s word and the present economy, they began to question their priorities. Many guys would enviably get around to sharing personal stories about the wasted time they experienced in pursuing what the world defines as success. The regrets and brokenness of many men often caused us to grieve. Our encouragement to those we met who had regrets focused upon whatever time God has given them to impact others in the future. Listening to some of the men, we couldn t help but appreciate how God re-directed our own lives. James Steiner found Jesus in his thirties and has been an active witness for Christ s cause ever since. He seeks to find that perfect balance so he can fully appreciate and enjoy his lovely wife - Whitney. I found Jesus at the tender age of thirteen but then went astray. At twenty-one I rededicated my life and have sought to serve our King ever since that time. In 1981 we started this ministry and haven t regretted that decision. While most high-achievers struggle with balance and priority setting, I can t help but remember the most important responsibility God ever gave me - that of being a godly father to the twin sons Louise blessed me with 40 years ago. Each spring as I smell the wonderful fragrance of the blossoming flowers and see the beautiful sights surrounding various lakes and ponds, I can t help but reflect upon the many days my boys and I enjoyed conversation and adventure during the early fishing season. It was a time of bonding and interaction about life, faith, and love for family. During the early days of parenting when I really struggled with priority setting and balance, I often referred to the following story that reminded me of the precedence God has for my life and family. The following story changed my life and dramatically impacted the time I ascribed to being a dad. It is said of Boswell, the famous biographer of Samuel Johnson, that he often referred to a special day in his childhood when his father took him fishing. The day was fixed in his adult mind, and he often reflected upon many of the things his father had taught him in the course of their fishing experience together. After having heard of that particular excursion so often, it occurred to someone much later to check the journal that Boswell s father kept and determine what he had said about the fishing trip from the parental perspective. Turning to that date, the reader found only one sentence entered: Gone fishing today with my son; a day wasted. Few have ever heard of Boswell s father; many have heard of Boswell. But in spite of his relative obscurity, he must have managed to set a pace in his son s life, which lasted for a lifetime and beyond. On one day alone he inlaid along the grain of his son s life ideas that would mark him long into his adulthood. What he did not only touched a boy s life, but it set in motion certain benefits that would affect the world of classical literature. Too bad that Boswell s father couldn t appreciate the significance of a fishing trip and the pacesetting that was going on even while worms were being squeezed on to hooks. No day is ever wasted in the life of an effective father. Hey, parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt, special friend! Plan now to have some quality time of relaxation and enjoyment with your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, or neighbor kids. I would give a great deal to have one more day in the boat bass fishing with my busy sons who serve God in the southeast. The many memories of our time together warms the chill that distance and time brings to the heart of a dad. Sincerely, Jim Grassi Take a kid fishing Today Before Tomorrow Becomes Yesterday 3

Do I Smell Food? Grilled Shrimp with Tomatillo and Avocado Salsa Salsa it s Mexico s answer to America s quest for convenience without compromise. Here, tangy, grill-roasted tomatillos form a pureed base for sweet, savory, and spicy vegetables. Dip in with some grilled shrimp for a spirited appetizer or main course. For the salsa: 12 tomatillos, husked and washed 1 ripe Haas avocado, cut into 1/4- inch dice 1 medium, ripe tomato, dice into 1/4-inch pieces 1/4 cup finely chopped white onion 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro 1 teaspoon minced jalapeno 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6 16 to 20 jumbo shrimp (1-1/2 to 2 pounds), peeled and deveined Extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper Paprika To prepare the salsa: Grill the tomatillos over Direct High heat until charred in spots and softened, 4 to 6 minutes, turning occasionally. Place the tomatillos in a food processor and process until smooth. Pour the tomatillos into a medium bowl. Add the remaining salsa ingredients and mix well. Set aside until ready to serve. Lightly brush or spray the shrimp with oil. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and paprika. Grill over direct high heat until the shrimp are just opaque in the center and firm to the touch, 2 to 4 minutes, turning once halfway through grilling time. Serve warm or at room temperature with the salsa. Makes 4 servings. Fiery Shrimp and Angel Hair Pasta A quick and delicious recipe to toss together on busy week nights. 1/2 cup butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon crushed Szechwan peppercorns 1 teaspoon hot chili oil 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1-1/2 pounds raw medium shrimp, peeled and deveined (about 45 to 60 shrimp) 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper 1/2 pound angel hair or vermicelli pasta, cooked 1/3 cup grated Romano or Parmesan cheese In small saucepan, combine butter, garlic, peppercorns, and chili oil; simmer over low heat until butter is melted and garlic begins to sizzle. Remove from heat; stir in cilantro. Thread shrimp on four or five skewers. Brush with olive oil. Place shrimp in center of cooking grate. Grill 4 to 5 minutes until pink and just opaque, turning once halfway through grilling time. Do not overcook. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove shrimp from skewers; toss with butter mixture, hot pasta, and cheese. Serve hot. Makes 4 servings. Note: If using wooden skewers, soak in water thirty minutes before using so ends won t burn during grilling time.

Cabela s Days It is still plenty dark when you leave home at 3:30 in the morning, and have a four hour drive to get to your destination. That is how it was on Saturday the 6th of March. It was our annual all day event at Cabela s in Dundee Michigan. We opted out of having a scheduled seminar. The area where the seminars are held is on the second floor behind the furniture department, and away from all the excitement of the shoppers. Instead we had our display set up in the fishing department and had 3 tables to ourselves. On one table we had our interactive water display showing 3 different types of fishing action. We had a crawler harness with a metal blade; we had a crawler harness with a Smile Blade, and a HummBait. On another table we had it piled with stock we took off the racks. There were Wally Pops, various colors and sizes of Smile Blades, and all three sizes of Hummbaits. The other table was a bonus. It was great to have for a work table. Jared Ayres and Tony Glynn utilized that for their hands on with the shoppers. Tony continually kept tying up different colors and showing them to the people (he had brought his own supply of stack beads, wedding rings, Smile Blades, plus line and hooks.) This always had people standing and watching him, because as he was tying the crawler harness he was showing them the various color combinations, and what colors would work well when. So some of the people wanted to learn how to tie them, that is when Jared and Tony said, Just step over here to our test table! It kept Bill and I busy showing people how to rig their poles. We had 2 poles rigged to show them. One had hot wings, and the other one had a stick-bait with a Smile Blade attached, as shown in the tips and techniques on Mack s web site. We all kept busy telling how the rigs were running in the interactive tank, and how no matter how slow you go, you still have action with Smile Blades. I can t forget to mention the other helper we had for the day, and that was Jared s eleven year old daughter Taylor. She monitored the table with the various lures on it, and when it looked like we needed more there, she knew just where to go and get them. What a great helper she was. When Jared and Tony showed anglers how to tie crawler harnesses, she was right beside her dad and tying them too. Neil, one of the employees in the fishing department said he always knows when we are there because there is always a group of people around our display. Of all the displays there for the day, he said ours was the busiest. As soon as he punched out he came over and spent time with us seeing what was new. It was a great day, and we took down our display and left around 6:00 because we had a long drive back home, and we wanted to stop at another fishing show on the way home to see how a friend of ours, also a Mack s Lure pro staffer Jay Nieman was doing. So another day completed by the awesome foursome plus the kid! It was great!! Bernadine Ayers 7
