2 President s Report Hi all, Everybody who went on our Inskip trip had a great time. The swell was a bit big to venture out to fish offshore, but for those who fished the creeks, there were plenty of flathead around, even if half of them were undersize. They are still great fun to catch on 1 kg line, which I am only just starting to get into, it's only taken me about 15 years since I have been in the club. I would like to thank Carl & Rob for spending all my money on a 1 kg outfit for me when I wasn't even in Barb & Wayne's shop at the time. Don't forget our AGM is on this meeting, so come along & welcome the new committee in. Cheers Vince. Captain s Report G Day All, This past month saw quite a few crews head north to fish the Boyne Tannem Hookup. The weather wasn t good but some crews left early to fish a weather opening with some reasonable fish caught. Col, Dave and I headed for 1770 for two weeks, but the weather was atrocious. We gave it our best with 400klms on the boat, but, not many fish were caught. Our next comp is out at the Barwon Banks on the 13 th, 14 th & 15 th July. Weigh In 12.30pm, B-B-Q will be held on the Sunday 15 th July at 1pm at the Coast Guard Park, Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba. FISH OF THE MONTH: MULLOWAY & SNAPPER. From all reports there are a few snapper being caught, so it should be a good comp. KIRKA Club message Board NOTICEs FOR July NEWSLETTER. From Ross Roberts: check out this site: < From Dougie Hauff: info about the Caloundra bar and nearby snapper To cross to Caloundra bar you have to go south along out from the beach then really shallow and dangerous. I followed another boat. Came ½ tide and the old track that really leads out from the channel is filled with sand. Hard to tell from the passage out as its at the first wave from the ocean. So it is going to tip a few over in the coming months. Always get a good Caloundra but the fish are smaller and the bar is extremely dangerous by night. I waited until 6pm light to go out would not come in or out by night. 2

7 I thought I would share this true story with you that happened in 2009 at Mooloolaba. This is actually two funny, but serious stories that are linked by the same life jacket. I still have the pleasure of taking my 80 year old dad out fishing on the close reefs even though he now has to use two walking sticks to get around. Once he is in the boat on his seat he is fine and still catches as many fish as ever. We returned to the safety of Mooloolaba harbour one evening at about 8 pm in the dark. My father suggested that I should drop him off on the floating pontoon jetty next to the ramp as this was the same level as the rail on the side of my boat and would be easier for him to swing his legs out. He managed to get standing with the help of his two canes and was about 1 m back from the edge of the pontoon when he said he was all ok, so I pushed my boat away from the edge to proceed to the ramp about 30m away. This pushing action caused the pontoon to move slightly and within seconds he was wobbling around and losing his balance. Next thing his walking sticks were flying in different directions across the pontoon and he was staggering back towards me. The only problem was that my boat was now about 1m out from the pontoon and as he came towards me I tried to grab him but this pushed me further out. With great dignity he held onto his hat as he went feet first into the dark murky waters of Mooloolaba harbour. He popped back up thankfully still hanging on to his hat with one hand. I promptly grabbed him by his collar and moved him towards the back of the boat to the transom ladder. Unfortunately he did not have the leg strength to push up on this short ladder and I could not lift him aboard as he was ringing wet. By now we were starting to drift towards multi million dollars yachts anchored nearby and I had to act fast to prevent any further embarrassment. I told him to move back toward the front of the boat near the helm so that I could hold him while manoeuvring away from the danger. Once he crept with his hands along the rail to this position I started the motor and realised that his feet would be awfully close to the propeller once we started moving. I had to hold him up as high as I could while engaging the motor and hoped that he didn t slip and go under the boat again. He held on tightly too as we slowly inched our way over to the sand beside the ramp. I was hanging onto him with one arm and using the other to both steer and adjust the throttle. Usually there are plenty of other boats and fisherman around this location to give a hand but even the Coastguard office a few meters away was unusually quiet. I drove the nose of my boat up onto the sand and gave my old man a big heave forward to beach him like a whale onto the shore. I jumped out and picked him up and propped him up next to the boat while I went and retrieved both his walking sticks which were still high and dry on the pontoon. After a big towel down his was none the worse for wear except for his car keys which were drowned in the salt water and would barely open his car and needed replacing the next day. Next week was father s day and I had great pleasure in presenting him an brand new fandangle inflatable life jacket. He wears it at all times now when coming fishing with me and we often think about what could have happened if something like this happened while twenty kilometres offshore. I guess I would have tied a rope around him and just skull-dragged him home. 7

8 PART TWO The story continues about a month later in which time my father had purchased another inflatable life jacket for me to use as he now liked his so much. With me on this fishing trip was another mate who is a big burly jolly fellow who is always good for a laugh even if we don t catch fish. As we exited Mooloolaba around lunch time I had a premonition that I should wear the new lifejacket for some unknown reason. The weather forecast was for very calm weather but I put it on anyway and asked my mate if he wanted to try out an inflatable jacket. He replied that he didn t think it would fit and that he would float well anyway if he went in the water. We proceeded offshore towards the Blinker about 6 kilometres out on a dead flat ocean. Up ahead resting on the surface was a very large Albatross so I decided to give way and changed course to one side. Once we were about 50m away, the Albatross started to run across the surface as he slowly took off towards us. I altered course again as he cut me off with his cross bow takeoff path. He then began to fly straight ahead of me in the same direction about 1m above the surface. With his large wings outspread he slowly picked up speed but wouldn t changed his path. My mate and I began to laugh as we watched him look back over his shoulder, first on one side then the other a number of times. We enjoyed this funny sight so much I decided to follow him for as long as possible and opened up throttle on the four stroke Suzuki. At this same time, over the sound of the motor, I heard this strange bubbling, whooshing sound coming from the side of my boat. We both looked around to see a very large Humpback whale head coming up vertically out of the water about 3m from the back corner of our boat. The head was followed by two huge pectoral fins and the whole body and tail of the whale as he launched himself into a full breach. He landed with a gigantic double sided splash about 20m behind us in our wake water. My mate and I just looked at each other with mouths open in amazement at how close he had come to hitting us. With the adrenalin just starting to pump we looked back forward at the Albatross and I made the comment; I bet that Albatross is laughing inside and thinking who s looking over their shoulder now! I asked my big brave friend if he would like to try the lifejacket now and he said he thought he may be able to make it fit after all. True story, same lifejacket. 8
