1 NEWSLETTER June 2011 Ross did well with his bass in muddy waters. It Weighed 1.4kg and is a nice looking fish. Sadly, Ray Gibbings, a founding and life member of our club passed away recently. I am sure everyone joins with me to send our condolences, thoughts and best wishes to his family. I know he will be missed dearly by his family and his many close friends. We are just about mid way through the year and winter is here. Time to start thinking about our winter species like bream and Jewfish and the reef species such as snapper and perlies. Finally we are starting to get some cracking fine weather and blow me down with a feather, it has even coincided with a few weekends. A few brave souls faced the brass monkey weather and headed to Boondoomba dam for the competition that was postponed from February. I say it every year, I m gonna go to that next year. It always sounds like a great trip away. This months meeting will give you an insight into spanner crabbing. Unfortunately the how to video was put together by Ken, Vince and myself which is kind of like a Nun giving a sex education class at a catholic boarding school. In our hearts you ll always stay, loved and remembered every day Many fond memories are flooding back of Gibbo in Death Wish 11 and earlier in a very wet Clark Abolone chasing tuna and makeral in terrible conditions off Mooloolaba in the 80s. Gibbo always had a smile no matter how hard he was hurting. He will always have a warm spot in our memories. Peter and Jenny Hart. Around 22 people went to the Raise a Glass for Gibbo dinner at the Waterfront Hotel on Monday night, including Ron Carby (life Member), Mick Worth & Mick Hansen long time old members and friends of Gibbo. As well as an old co-worker who worked with Gibbo at the Nambour Hospital. A good night was had by all. http//: Page 2

3 President s Pep Our AGM is on at our July Club meeting, so anybody interested in taking on a committee role must have their nomination form in 31 days prior to the July Club meeting. Our lure board is drawn at our June Club meeting, so if you have any tickets that have been sold can you get them to Dave or Maroochy Fishing World. Good luck to all who have purchased tickets. Four club members made the 3 hour trip to Boondoomba Dam over the weekend to take part in the annual fishing comp which was postponed from February to June due to the floods earlier in the year. Ross Beinke was the only one who caught a fish, with a 1.4 kg bass being weighed in. The dirty water from a fresh in the river didn't help much, but we did get to sleep in due to all the thick fog. Cheers Vince. Captain Saunders Hi everyone, sorry I missed last months newsletter. What a great trip, Inskip point is a perfect location as it offers fishing for every type of angler - beach, inshore and offshore. From all reports from the members who attended Housing accommodation was the way to go. For all the boys who put the effort in, doing overnighters most certainly got rewarded coming home with trophy reds,and a lot of quality reef fish. I was most pleased with Brian Faith, a new member to the club who came along learnt from more experienced members and caught some quality fish. He managed to take home two trophies for his efforts, well done Brian. Peter guru Gurdham smashed everyone taking 11 off the 16 target species being Champion male. Joan Steel took the female Champion angler with 4 off 16 species being caught. Thanks to Wado and Kirka for all their efforts in finding the houses so close together and helping to provide all who attended with a well organised event. this month is boondoomba dam event I will not be able to attend so good luck at the dam everyone Cheers captain Paul 12 months ago. Fishing in the UK. Using rigs and methods that were alien to me - Worlds Away for more than one reason! My Cousin Mark is a very keen angler and collector. Just before I arrived he cleaned up his garage and put 32 rods and reels that he wasn't using up into the attic. That only left about the same quantity stored in the garage. He could open a small tackle shop and has proudly earned the nickname Tackle Tart. For my taste of fishing UK style we got underway about 5pm, a bit late in the day but when it doesn't get dark till 11pm that leaves plenty of time to fish and have a few (dozen) beers before sunset. About 3 hours later I had a run on one of the three matched Shimano Baitrunners that Mark had provided for me. It fell for a pop-up boilie that sits just above the bottom. After a nice fight on 5lb line I had my first European Carp on the bank for a few photos and a weigh. It went to 10lb which is a decent fish (double figures not commonly caught and especially not for a first fish) but not a patch on Marks PB of 32lb. Not long later I fooled another similar sized one on an un-weighted floating dog biscuit. After a long fight on 2lb line the tiny size 18 hook pulled at the bank. The Carp (Cyprinus carpio) Although Carp are considered a pest in Australia, they are keenly sought in the UK (continued on page 3) http//: Page 3

4 Note the rod holders. Each has a bite indicator that beeps faster or slower depending on the amount of line movement. They light up at night, and have a remote alarm for the bivvie. as well as other parts of Europe. They are surprisingly finicky fish and difficult to trick - Possibly due to many of the course fish (we would call them impoundment fish) being caught and released a number of times in their lives. Tackle Due to the tricky nature of the target species, tackle and fishing methods in the UK have evolved to a higher level than in Australia, requiring the angler to be more technical, finer in detail and more precise in order to catch fish. We used numerous different rigs some of which are photographed. The piece of equipment that intrigued me the most was the PVA mesh that when filled with berley (dog biscuits or boilies) and cast into location melts away and leaves your berley sitting right around your baited hook. One type of mesh when stretched tight around the berley, explodes suddenly soon after being immersed in water, to distribute the berley in a 300mm radius around your bait. We used sinkers that were either clear or rock shaped for disguise. Debate about Bait The bait we used included Gents (maggots) that came in natural, or dyed a myriad of colours, or soft plastic variants. Corn was also used in natural, strawberry flavoured, and soft plastic in red, yellow and fleuro colours. Bread both baked and artificial. (something that needs to be considered later in the night with a belly full of grog and other stuff that makes you hungry - the artificial stuff is hard to chew!) Dog biscuits and boilies (man made balls made of egg and other ingredients My dad with his best catch of the day - a little Roach that are flavoured and infused with fish attractants. Altogether a huge selection to match the fish tastes on the day. It was a real education. A Good Trip We got to bed at about 4am, as the sky was starting to lighten. On getting up at 8 we found a carton of empty beer bottles littered around our camp as well as an empty bottle of Jack and 10 yr old single malt scotch. Don t know how they got there but my head certainly felt like it was a World Away too. 6 At $179 for 24kg rod and 7500 reel in the last catalogue sale at Maroochydore Fishing World why even bother looking on the net. Check out the deals next month with the Offshore series reels packaged with braid from just $149. The Fin Nor Offshore series of reels and matching rods represent really good value for money. I used the 7500 for the first time on the Rainbow Beach trip and I really put it through its paces. (albeit on snags rather than good fish) The drag on these reels is extremely powerful and is backed up by solid aluminium body and stainless gears and shaft. 7 Wayne s Fishing Report from Maroochydore Fishing World ESTUARY: Bream moving into the Maroochy River on the high tides with fowl gut and froggies best. Whiting taking yabbies around Goat Island. The Cod Hole is firing for jew, grunter and estuary cod and tailor. Flathead at the Bli Bli goal posts. Garfish in the Mooloola basin using prawn pieces. SURF: Sea bream taking prawns and gar fillet from Mudjimba to North Shore. Chopper tailor and bream at Pincushion with dawn and dusk best. Dart and whiting on pippies at Maroochy Beach. OFFSHORE: The Blinker area for parrot, sweetlip and moses perch on squid and cut baits. Cobia, squire and red emperor at Murphy s Reef with the Barwon Banks firing for larger snapper and pearl perch on plastics. Spanner crabs prolific at present in their usual spots. GAMEFISHING: Live bait out wide hard to locate but plenty inshore near the shark nets off Maroochy Beach producing mac tuna and longtails providing sport. Trolling baits and lures form eight mile out to eighteen mile patch on 60 degrees for small blacks and mac tuna. Water temp around 20 degrees. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam returning togas right up in the Sticks with golden perch, bass and jew below the dam wall. Most of our local impoundments are working well down at their weirs with rattling lures and spinner baits best. Somerset Dam has bass and golden perch taking live shrimps and deep diving lures. Don t forget the red claw traps!!!! WAYNE NILSSON.
