2 EDITORS COMMENTS This month I have decided to add a few more regular segments to the newsletter. Kevin Ford will be writing his tech tips from Lureworld. Another segment is Fishers for Conservation news, FFC is an environmental organization formed by fishers that are concerned about the marine environment. I will also print some complete FFC newsletters for the club meetings. Other wise not much club trip news. The Somerset trip was called off due to the long weekend (speedboats and crowds). A few club members did go along for the Peel Island trip and there were some nice Snapper caught. Also The Snapper Classic Fishing competition will be held on the 14 th & 15 th of July, Entry forms will be available at the next meeting or ed with this Newsletter. Tight lines - Jeff Maddalena Bellinger River Trip in July Ray Bricknell is looking for a Deckie to spend an enjoyable week with him fishing the mouth of the beautiful Bellinger River for Blackfish and Bream (the ocean going varieties of both) during July. Some top quality Snapper have been caught in the last couple of weeks, Chris Eldred (above) looked pleased with his catch. Kevin Ford caught this snapper (below) in the Gold Coast Seaway and Lloyd Willmann with catch of the month with some very impressive Snapper. Ray will provide the boat, transport, accommodation in an on site van, and most meals, all at his expense. So anyone who would like a REALLY CHEAP week of very enjoyable fishing on a very pretty river, please contact Ray on or to sort out some dates. Ray s plan is to drive down on the Tuesday morning, fish Wednesday through Saturday, and drive home Sunday so it involves only four weekdays. Of course, the plan is to be back in time for the Jewfish trip to the Pin Wed 25 th to Sat 28 th July.
3 If you haven't joined Team Lure World yet, Click here to register. This Months Tech Tip Fishing with Lures- There are quite a few reasons why fish can be attracted to and take a lure. A/ They are hungry- the most obvious one B/ They are protecting their space- Territorial C/ Reactive bite- something is moving and instincts take over, a Reflex type action D/ Curiosity- They don't have hands so they feel with their mouths E/ Competitive- Everyone else is going for it and they might miss out. What mood the fish are in, can change from day to day or during the course of a fishing session. Some of these things relate to the speed the lure is fished at, others to colour, movement or to single fish or schooling fish. What works on getting the fish to take the lure can also change during the course of a session and depend on the group or mood of the fish. The biggest trick is to try and work out what mode the fish are in. For some species this can be relatively easy to predict, for others it can be quite difficult. This is where trying different techniques; colours, depths, sizes, weights and speeds come into play. Personally I will have a couple of different rods set-up and alternate between them to work out what gives me a result. Then I'll stick to what is working until things quieten or a change occurs in the way the fish are reacting. Take a little time and try a few different techniques to see what starts to work. If things go quiet, be prepared to make changes to adjust. KEVIN FORD sales@lureworld.com.au Ph/fax Mobile Fishers For Conservation News Grey Mackerel campaign update FFC steering committee member and secretary of the Network for Sustainable Fishing in Douglas Shire David Cook alongside concerned local residents have met with DPI&F representatives and continued their call for a ban on the unsustainable netting of Grey Mackerel spawning aggregations. This is an important meeting and scientific fact and local knowledge are on our side. Latest news: INSHORE FIN FISH UPDATE The development of proposals for the future management of the inshore fin fishery is nearing completion. The six working groups set up to consider size and bag limits, sharks, netting, closures, Dugong protection areas and performance measures, have met and provided advice on future management. The Inshore Fin Fish Management Advisory Committee met for a three-day meeting in April to finalise the recommendations and DPI&F is now preparing the Regulatory Impact Statement and other material proposed for public release in August 2007 (subject to government endorsement). In preparing the RIS, DPI&F is to be as open and transparent in how the final proposals were reached. This will be an important focus of the materials outlining proposed changes.
4 DPI&F are currently organising meeting times and locations to present proposed changes. Stakeholder meetings will be held in over 20 towns and cities along the Queensland east coast during August and September. 2006/07 COMMITTEE PRESIDENT: Lloyd Willmann Ph: VICE-PRES: David Rawlins Ph: SECRETARY: Craig Milne Ph: TREASURER: Tom Wallbank Ph: ANSA REP/Rec: Lloyd Willmann Ph: TAG.
